Notes: Taking its cosmic inspiration from star charts and ancient astrolabes, Star Song is a rotating optical disc-programmed sequencer with a built-in minimalist synthesizer.

Star Song can be used either to play its own built-in pulsewave synthesizer, or in combination with the A.M.P. electronics Wave Expander (sold separately) to drive external analogue and modular synthesizers.

How it is used

To create sequences on Star Song, the seven translucent rings (orbits) of the optical disc are marked with a marker (included) or opaque tape. The disc is removable and additional discs are sold separately, allowing for indefinite storage of your favourite sequences.

The outer six rings control the tuned note selection and note-on/off sequencing. The innermost ring controls the cut-off frequency for the built-in bandpass filter.

Disc on/off and disc direction are toggled from touch contacts on the front panel, and disc speed is controlled from the central rotary control.

Additionally, there are 1/8" inputs to control rotation speed and rotation direction with an external source.

The addition of Wave Expander makes the Star Song into an incredibly versatile Gate(6 channels) and CV (1 channel) sequencer, as well as providing the Star Song's tuned audio oscillator over five separate octave divisions (four audio and one sub-audio), 12 outputs in all to integrate into your modular system.

Multiple Star Song units can be synced by using an external clock signal, and you can even slave Star Song to your existing Melody Oracle/Wave Expander combo.

In 2015, ARP's history was thrust into the spotlight with the revival of the ARP Odyssey. This was just the beginning. From the ARP ODYSSEY FS with its full-size keyboard, to the long awaited ARP 2600 FS and ARP 2600 M, ARP synths once again stand at the forefront of the modern music scene.

Build the legacy

Staying true to the ARP Odyssey FS, this build-it-yourself kit uses the same analogue circuitry, preserving the original warm and rich sound. The kit also features the original specs of the Rev. 3 model with a full-size keyboard and a iconic black panel design with orange lettering.

To help simplify assembly, a pictorial guide is included and no technical knowledge (or soldering) is needed! To commemorate the unique experience of building it yourself, it is distinguished from any other ARP Odyssey with its own unique serial number engraved into an elegant metal plate.

Control

The original PPC (Proportional Pitch Control) based on a rubber pad has been reproduced. Press the rubber pad with your finger to control pitch bend or vibrato depth in proportion to the pressure.

A portamento slider and transpose switch are included, and you can even use a switch to select the way in which Rev1 and Rev2/3 of the original ARP Odyssey differ as to whether portamento is applied the moment that you operate the transpose lever.

Connect

The ARP Odyssey FS Kit is a versatile analogue synthesizer with multiple connectivity options. It has both 1/4" jack and XLR outputs, an audio input jack for external processing, and a headphone jack for self-feedback. The instrument also features CV, GATE, and TRIG jacks for sending and receiving analog signals, and includes both 1/4" and mini-size patch cables. Additionally, it has a MIDI IN connector and USB MIDI port for connection to a computer or other MIDI device. The GATE OUT and TRIG IN jacks can be connected to play legato without triggering the EG.

A multimode analogue filter, white and pink noise generator, 2 ADSR envelopes, 2 sync-able LFOs, unique analogue BBD chorus with 3 modes, full MPE-based polyphonic aftertouch, and complete MIDI control including polyphonic aftertouch and MPE work together to bring a classic analogue sound ready to integrate into modern times. Xerxes produces triangle, saw, square, and PWM waveforms with variable drift controls from each oscillator, sync with variable phase shifting, and ring modulation allowing for complex cross-modulation effects. Each oscillator features an octave switch, bipolar transpose potentiometer +/-7 semitones, a master tuning pot affecting both oscillators, and a detune knob for subtly detuning Oscillator 2 to Oscillator 1. Portamento/Glissando or Glide can be programmed to affect Oscillator 1, 2, or both.

The analogue multimode filter on XERXES offers 24db/oct low pass, 12db/oct high pass modes and a band pass filter mode switchable between 6db/oct & 12db/oct for all kinds of filter characteristics. The filter can also be modulated by the dedicated ADSR envelope, LFO, velocity, and aftertouch (MPE and Polyphonic Aftertouch) allowing for incredibly expressive performance and programming.

XERXES features 6 LFO waveforms: Sine, triangle, saw, ramp, square, and random, plus a dedicated delay control to fade the LFO to the full amount set by the depth knob. XERXES features a beautiful, fully-analogue BBD-based chorus with 3 selectable modes, similar to the chorus effect found on the vintage Elka Synthex synthesizer. XERXES MK2 is equipped with stereo 1/4" balanced outputs to take full advantage of the stereo chorusing effect.

Notes: Do you use pedals that don't match the outputs of your power supply? With EBS' new power adapter cables, there's a way to solve most matters.

It sucks when you realize your coolest vintage pedal or latest digital processor-driven unit can't be fed from your pedalboard power supply because they are thirstier or uses different power inputs than your power supply features. At worst, you may even skip bringing your favourite toys to avoid the hassle. However, with the new EBS adaptor cables, you can solve many of these issues easily and save the space that those extra power supplies may occupy.

Need to convert a 2.1 mm plug to 2.5 mm? No problem.
Need more current than you get from one output? No problem.
Need 18 or 24V DC power from 9 and 12V outputs? No problem.
You can even change the polarity from the common Center Negative to Center Positive using one of the new EBS adaptor cables.

Here's how you do it:

To go from 2.1 to 2.5 mm, use the DC1-48 90/0 2.5 adaptor.

Light sensitive MIDI controller - IO-Lights is a MIDI controller that controls MIDI CC or MIDI Note messages via environmental light. A high-resolution light sensor in the center of the product makes it possible. In addition, MIDI notes can also be sent to IO-Lights, which are then represented as light by the 12 LEDs on the device.

How to use IO-Lights?

IO-Lights is used as a common MIDI controller. Just connect it via USB to the music software of your choice and start controlling sounds with light. You want to connect IO-Lights to your hardware synthesizer? Then simply use an additional USB MIDI host (e.g. this). Configuration and firmware updates can be done directly in a web app.

Light to MIDI:

In the center of IO-Lights is a high-resolution light sensor that measures brightness. Use your surrounding light or a light source of your choice and point it at IO-Lights to control your sound.

MIDI to Light:

IO-Lights can not only control MIDI signals, but also visualize MIDI notes by the 12 LEDs on the product UI. Therefore simply send MIDI notes to IO-Lights. This is where the magic happens: the resulting light also influences the MIDI signals that IO-Lights emit. This creates a generative sound-light interaction.

Random Light Mode:

Let IO-Lights generate light randomly. Not only does it look nice, it also influences your sound by the resulting change of luminosity. If you want more control, you can change the internal note scale and enable external clock synchronization.

Feedback Loop Mode:

We all know feedback loops are wild, and interesting! IO-Lights has a dedicated feedback loop mode based on a simple formula: The higher the brightness measured with the light sensor, the less LEDs are on, and vice versa. This results in an oscillating light source, which can be influenced by reflecting material (for example your hand) or an external light source. Based on this random source, MIDI data is generated to play notes or automate your instruments.

Note Scale:

If you want more harmony, a custom note scale quantizing incoming light can be set in the web app. Combined with tempo synchronization, IO-Lights evolves into an organic, visual instrument with many surprises, and still does what you want.

Clock Sync:

IO-Lights allows time synchronization to external software or hardware via MIDI clock. If tempo sync is enabled, the current measured light values are sent synchronously to the MIDI host clock. Additionally a custom clock divider can be set.

Web App:

To customize IO-Lights to your needs, Instruments Of Things provide a web app hosted on their official website. Internal parameters, such as note scale or incoming brightness range can be changed in real-time and persisted via WebMIDI. New firmware updates are automatically discovered and can be directly installed in (Google Chrome/Chromium) browser via WebUSB.

Connectivity/Compatibility:

IO-Lights is a USB-MIDI class compliant device and comes with an additional USB-C to Micro USB adapter cable. A deep and flexible semi-modular mono synth, it was developed by a team of veteran synth aficionados to be the realization of their collective dream. It is a synthesist's synthesizer - a well-considered, finely-honed, stand-alone instrument capable of both nuance and bombast. You are never more than a slider away from turning sweet into raucous, or a patch cable removed from corrupting the virtuous into the wicked.

To distill Cascadia into a bullet-list of features does not do justice to the sonic possibilities that lurk just behind the panel. Instead, it's best to imagine the potential of two oscillators (one capable of operating at LFO rates; and one with full TZFM and sync capabilities) - each with multiple independent outputs working as both sound and modulation sources. Think about the possibilities of a fully-modulatable, self-oscillating, multimode filter with numerous modes simultaneously available, or the sonic advantages of having both wavefolding and ring modulation built-in. What is Bitmask synthesis?

Bitmask synthesis is the method the MASK1 uses to generate its sound. Internally, oscillators do only have one waveform. Various tones are created by applying what is called a bitmask. This is a technique inherited from computing, which alters a number by masking some of its digits. Here, this technique was adapted to make sound. Bit-masking creates complex wave shapes that are full of harmonics and give the MASK1 its sonic character.
