Review: Apparently James Adam Brown had one very definitely theme in mind with There Is Space Under Your Seat. Put simply, he wanted to explore aural interpretations of the human desire to create mental breathing room by pausing emotions to process feelings when circumstances become overwhelming. And, let's face it, they frequently have a habit of doing just that.
Recorded at ICP Studios in Belgium, after demos were laid down in his own facility deep in the stunning Yorkshire Dales, it's hard to imagine a more fitting setting for these ideas to form. A place that's equal parts bleak and beautiful, and certainly remote (in UK terms, at least). So what we have here is sometimes eerie, always stunning, packed with spatiality and a tangible emotional quality you will not be able to escape from.

Review: Excitement abounds as British heavy industrial/dub producer Shackleton debuts a brand new project, The Purge Of Tomorrow. An outlet for his less dancefloory material, this stint is more inspired by the artist's background in noise and metal, and the EP consists of two long tracks that were developed from live performances, exploring themes of dystopia, apocalypse and survival. Cursed anti-ambient music arises from the depths of Tartarus, drawing on tropes from neoclassical music to trance. There's also contributions on strings by Kathy Alberci.

Review: Composer Michael Abels and Oscarr winner Jordan Peele have hooked up plenty of times on the big screen before, and this is another hugely successful partnership. Us was released in March 2019 and is an original nightmare that is set in present-day Santa Cruz on the Northern California coast. Lupita Nyong'o and Black Panther's Winston Duke star and the score features many highlights such as a 30-person choir, ten of them kids, on 'Anthem', while plenty of Eastern European instruments, violins and percussion were also employed. 1995 hip-hop anthem 'I Got 5 On It' by Luniz is also included and never fails to stand out.

Review: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Nope by Micael Abels accompanied the Oscarr winner Jordan Peele's famously expansive horror epic and helped take it to the next level. This is their third project together and maybe the most ambitious score of the lot. It draws influence from sci-fi, horror, action and westerns and there is a real blend between original score and source music. It is at times a terrifying listen and at others full of grand adventure, awe and wonder. The sounds scale up when needed to match the pictures and totters they make for a superb experience, but the soundtrack alone is one hell of a ride.

Review: Lucie Antunes broadens her sonic horizons with her superb second album, Carnaval. The French composer brings together pop and avant guard ideas with her background as a classically-trained drummer and percussionist. What results is an ebullient brew of electronically inclined sounds that unite people across genre boundaries on the dancefloor. Leonie Pernet is on board for production and the human voice features for the first time in her work, but in a heavily manipulated form that still manages to convey meaning and message. Cerebral yet mischievous, this is a standout sophomore from Antunes.

Review: Originally released in the mid 80's on UK cassette label Bite Back!, this nearly lost gem finds new life 30 years later on Cocktail D'Amore Music. Steve has cobbled together a superbly melancholic electronic concept album. Wistful melodies often evoke sentiments of a lost childhood and hazy English mornings. Each song within remains untitled allowing full perceptive freedom as to what they all communicate, a language for the feelings that have no name. Untitled A1 - A6 leads one along intimate soundscapes of pattering drums and tinkering piano, a sense of closeness and trust develops with the introduction of each new idea much like the beginning of a bed time story. Untitled B1 - B3 then begin to breathe more openly awash in angelic colours before abruptly turning downward on B4, a wall of booming drums and atmospheres from the furthest reaches of the galaxy before the last trio of songs settles gently back on Earth.

Review: Gerry Anderson's Stingray is one of those superbly nostalgic and cult TV shows that, when thinking about them now, transports you right back to your childhood - unless you're lucky enough to be too young to have seen it first time around that is. The series followed the World Aquanaut Security Patrol (WASPs) on several underwater adventures with a superb soundtrack from Barry Gray adding style and drama to the aquatic odyssey. From minimalist electronic pieces to lush strings, jazzier motifs and driving military marches, this gatefold silver vinyl version of the completed soundtrack is a real doozy.

Review: Lars Bartkuhn sonically portrays his recent relocation to Brazil on his latest ambient / new age LP Dystopia. It's an ironic title for sure, since it hardly sounds like what we'd usually imagine a dystopia to sound like. Perhaps the LP's making could shed some light on this paradox; Bartkuhn's first solo LP for almost nine years, it was born out of two interlinked ideas: a desire to create improvised music without the aid of computer sequencers or an electronic drum set, and a deeply held love of storytelling through sound. It's this revelling in imperfection which perhaps makes the album 'dystopic' - bits like 'Largo' and 'Do You Know How To Get Out' are beautifully rhythmic and driving, despite their apparent lack of computerisation going into the process. Sonically, it's aquatic, malleting, tactile, bubbly, serene.

This all culminates in an echoic and half-remembered folk sound, where additional vocal mods and apparitions from the likes of Claire Rousay also appear, making for a certain addition to the nascent canon of "cybernetic folk".

Review: Denis Villeneuve's psychological thriller about a man who sees his doppelganger in a movie, and begins an obsessive search for the look-alike, is a strange, tense, highly stylised dive into a world that's informed by some of the masters of surrealist tension. At times invoking landmark mind-benders such as David Lynch's Lost Highway, albeit with a far less experimental narrative structure, to say its score works hard to set the tone is putting it mildly.
Created by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, Enemy's soundtrack is a joy, but also thoroughly trippy. It's unnerving, and yet inviting, laidback while also mournful, and always has this air of the unknown and uncertain about it. Boasting white noise, strings, drones, woodwind, elements of classical, jazz and library sounds are all here, at times invoking space age imagery, in other moments taking use back to the great mysteries of 20th Century cinema.
