Lost Time EP

Horns For 2024 (5:23)
2 Time Loser (4:44)
Just Saw Johnny (5:20)
I Don't Wanna Stop (5:02)
Review: Bristolian drum n' bass collective 4am Kru is a recent founding, owing to jungle's 'never say die' popularity in the city. Following up a strict vinyl-only release style, the kru's latest EP 'Lost Time' as ever fuses rollicking breaks with soulful samples and cheeky spinbacks, curveballing the d&b equivalent of technosoul while miring everything else into a nice crunch. These sonic speculations on the junglist retrofuture are nevertheless all you need to lay down a solid party for the present.

Soligen & Type-2 - "Can't Go" (Break remix) (6:07)
Break - "Coming 4 U" (5:16)
Jade - "What You Are" (Break remix) (5:05)
Review: The legendary Fokuz label outta the Netherlands hits a 110th release and opts for a selection of remixes from various artists. AirK & Cephei open up with 'Desire,' a slick roller with booming bass and epic synths. Break then comes through with tight remix of A2 Soligen & Type 2 's 'Can't Go' complete with expertly design hits. Break then goes it alone on the original 'Coming 4U' with its low end oscillations and closes out the EP back in remix mode. His take on 'What Are You' is a roaming, textural affair with twisted leads and flurries of toms.

Deliver Me (6:32)
Azizam Dub (7:12)
Internal Vybrations (4:02)
Celebration Dub (7:21)
Review: Audio Soul Project returns with fresh vinyl here in the form of their Simurgh EP, which is named after a mythical Persian bird. Across the tunes you'll find a fusion of dub, d&B, house and even r&b to make for an alluring sonic trip. Opener 'Deliver Me' brings the warmth and soul with balmy chords over raw, woody drums with a big diva vocal up top. Things are paired back for 'Azizam Dub' which has a subsonic bass line bump and synth stabs bringing the energy. 'Internal Vybrations' is d&b powered by monstrous bass with hi-hats, shakers and maracas detailing the rhythm, and last of all 'Celebration Dub' brings a funky and summery house vibe perfect for outdoor dancing. This is as varied an EP as you'll hear this season.

Torpedo (12")
Cat: BT 174. Rel: 18 Apr 23
Torpedo (Insideinfo remix) (4:24)
Spider (Optiv & BTK remix) (6:23)
Review: Bad Taste's Bad Company have got an absolute wealth of stone-cold killer cuts in their arsenal and this next remix package is no different. It kicks off with a lush remix by Insideinfo of 'Torpedo' which has a bouncy, fleshy groove with garage-style snares up top and a nagging soul vocal that tugs at the heart. On the flipside is 'Spider' (Optiv & BTK remix), which is a totally different proposition - the bass is dark, the breaks come hard and fast and the mix work adds menace to an already monstrous peak time banger.

Review: A legend in D&B circles since the mid-90s and those seminal drops on Creative Source and Vibez, Big Bud continues to spread the influence of his smooth, melodious and mellow sound thanks to a steady run of reissues. Okbron in particular have been a great source for Big Bud gems from bygone times, with this third installment now turning to a holy grail white label joint from 1997 known as 'Aka Jazz'. Longtime fans will be doing somersaults over being able to get their hands on this easy-rolling masterpiece, and 'Scratch' on the flip is no slouch either with its breezy instrumentation and smartly-programmed beat.

Review: Russian polymath Black Barrel continues his incredible vein of form with this stunning (and highly limited) Dispatch Dubplate edition. Flexing his full range and style, each cut tickles a different corner of the dancefloor. Highlights range from the uncompromising drum thunder on 'Mental Kiss' and the sensual, heartfelt sounds of 'Orgasm' by way of the purring, subdued soul of 'Exactly This' and the powerful finale cut 'Ocean'. Review: Across a blistering catalogue of heavyweight drops for the likes of Black Box, Artikal Music, Cosmic Bridge and Innamind, TMSV has proven himself to be one of the most vital soundsystem-minded producers in current circulation. Following the excellent double dose of Jungle Selections for the self-steered Broken Records label in 2021, the Dutch artist fires the project up once again for a four-pronged attack on the sense, chopping up the amens and engaging in all manner of tightly-clipped edit acrobatics - pure shockout material from someone with uncut jungle pumping through his veins.

In My Soul (6:17)
In My Soul (Sumgii 160 remix) (6:11)
Tek Riser (5:55)
Tek Riser (Shadowchild remix) (4:15)
Review: N4 is back with another blinding EP, this time from Pete Cannon who has already had some of these tunes played by the likes of Bicep. 'In My Soul' is full-throttle drum & bass with raved-up sirens and crashing breaks to get the floor in a spin. The Sumgii 160 remix brings elements of footwork rhythms, loopy and cut-up sequences that explode and implode endlessly. 'Tek Riser' is a bubbling and gurgling world of slamming drums and rubbery bass for big room action and last of all is a Shadowchild remix that brings some light with celestial synths and a more slow and pronounced rhythm.

Nirwana (4:54)
Pull Up (5:04)
Daze Of Our Lives (4:59)
Life Changed (4:50)
Review: We shouldn't need to hype Critical Music up to you too much - the label is a true staple of underground drum & bass after all. Even so, it's exciting to see two powerful forces coming together, and Coco Bryce remains at the top of his game bowling onto this EP for the London imprint with the cheekily titled Nirwana EP. The title track is a delicate, melancholic affair with some smart vocal snippets arranged into an emotive framework before we drop into some outstanding Apache chops. 'Pull Up' meanwhile offers its own distinctive flair with jazzy key licks sprinkled in the breakdown before a coolly dispatched Think break kicks in across the mix. There are ravier synth stabs at work on 'Daze Of Our Lives' and 'Life Changed' lets a little dub slip into the mix, not least thanks to the proper sub line rounding out the bottom end of this typically classy joint with that distinctive Bryce flair about it.

Do You Sell Hardcore? (Triple Point remix) (4:54)
Review: BAM! Dance Trax hits the big five-oh with this walloping four-tracker from Club Glow's Denham Audio. Ruthless breakbeat behaviour as always, on 'Define Consciousness' we see him going in on the d&b tempos with raw Rupture-like energy while 'On Site' takes us to those icy breaks he's made his signature over the years. Flip for 'Do You Sell Hardcore?' and take a trip back in time as the breaks kick like they're underwater and the FX go for maximum trippy. Last but not least Triple Point goes in on a remix of 'Do You Sell Hardcore' flipping it into a sweet two-step scenario. You dancing?

Brick Wall (5:18)
Inside Out (5:20)
Review: Ipswich's Steve Carr remains one of the greatest operatives in the field of d&b, able to flex his studio skills to any number of approaches from crisp, techy rollers to ruffneck amen crushers and plenty of other spaces in between. He's also the latest to sign up with Okbron, the label committed to unearthing forgotten dubplates and exclusives from the archives. In the case of Digital, we're treated to two fresh slabs which show the best of this consistently inspiring artist. 'Brick Wall' is a melancholic affair in the synth department, but there's some serious damage to be done when the 'ardcore stabs come slamming in around the drop. Meanwhile, 'Inside Out' toys with dreamy pads and vocal tones before locking into a widescreen, dubbed out soundscape that ranks among the finest works Digital has ever created.

Glass Pipe Fury (6:00)
Review: .Back to 94! Vinyl Fanatiks have unearthed more gold on Krome & Time's Tearin Vinyl imprint as they reissue the label's earliest signings for the very first time. While Exodus and Head Pressure only went on to have a few more singles, both 'Rude Boy Dem' and 'Glass Pipe Fury' showed great promise as they captured that wild jungle energy and freedom. The former goes big on the breaks and focuses everything on the drums and subs, the latter brings in a darker, more tense vibe with the pads and switches. Blueprint business.

Review: DJ Sofa returns to the Myor Massiv label with more of her dancefloor heaters. The A-side is all about bring big time party energy to the club with raga samples, gun finger bait, hooky melodies and of course some firing jungle breakbeats underpinned by drilling basslines. The flipside jam 'Over & Over' has plenty more fire in store with its old school signifiers, hardcore pitched up vocals and rave melodies over plunging bass stabs and well designed breaks. This is another essential 12" destined for big things.

Review: DJ Solo's stone-cold classic tune 'Darkage' was remixed masterfully by DMS and now the original EP gets a direct, limited edition repress on 10". The tunes have both been remastered for the job and both sound as good now as ever. A-side gem 'Darkage' (DMS remix) is awash with trippy and psychedelic melodic patterns with a pitched-up and soulful vocal that brings the standout element to really make it bang. 'Axis' (DMS remix) then has a similar mix of hardcore and soulful vocals over crispy drum breaks and rave pianos for all out dance floor euphoria.

DJ X-cess - "You Got The Love"
Ghost Unit - "Air Cooled" (DJ X-cess Piano mix)
DJ X-cess - "Need Your Loving"
Ghost Unit - "We Are Jungl-ie"
Review: Two fresh names make a big splash in the still-strong UK hardcore scene. Coming to DJ Seduction's Burning Bush Communciations for an unlikely Florence And The Machine remix, we hear a breaks-backed version of 'You Got The Love' by DJ-X-Cess, but with re-recorded vocals that sound more to have been lifted from a passionate soul B-side than directly from the indie pop darling. It works very well, admittedly. Then also comes a remix of Ghost Unit's 'Air Cooled' by DJ X Cess, who adds to the original a wally, impossible-not-to-dance-to piano mix.

Review: Now here's a ravey reissue you're going to want to wrap those lovely lugholes around... Previously fetching upwards of L500 on Discogs, John Doe's 'Mission Edition' first landed on white label in 1995. Sampling Kicks Like A Mule's 'The Bouncer', it's had cult status ever since. Finally reissued by Kniteforce's legendary Luna-C, both the heavier hardcore vibes of 'The Outsider' and the more freeform, breakbeat bliss of 'On A Chill Tip' are now ready and waiting for your reload pleasure at a fraction of the current auction price. Drive Me Crazy (5:29)
Review: Wild experimental drum & bass here from longtime scene legend Dom & Roland. Out via his own imprint, this one comes to an exquisite yellow-orange vinyl slab. Its A-sider hears an insanely cool lead bassline filter and sizzle into oblivion, against shockingly compressed yet still-dynamic drum-punches. B-sider 'Drive Me Crazy' is equally a jaw-dropping techstep number, unafraid of indulging wild breakwork and melodic synthery at the same time. Both tracks are as raucous, punchy, unashamed and loud as their titles suggest.

Double O - "Straight 98" (Escher remix) (5:47)
Tim Reaper & Dwarde - "Mendoza" (5:11)
Mani Festo - "Caving In" (6:31)
Review: Rupture takes us to Uranus with this new various artist and special blue marled 12" featuring the don Tim Reaper as well as Double O, Dwarde and Mani Festo. It's an Escher remix of 'Straight 98' that kicks off and traps you in unresolved, tense and atmospheric drum loops with a subtle sense of funk. Reaper and Dwarde then combine for the dark and all-out breakbeat assault that is 'Mendoza'. Last of all is Mani Festo's 'Caving In', another heavy one with fizzing electronics, crunchy percussive textures and prying bass that is not in a hurry to go anywhere and instead keeps you trapped in the moment.

Spandangle Selection Volume 22
Cremation (5:35)
Lovely (4:50)
Eleusis (5:36)
Somebody Else (5:35)
Review: 10 years in, Spandangle continues to bring a high grade of jungle to wax for the real heads. On this twenty-second volume in the series, we're treated to a team-up from Huddersfield producer Duburban and the mysterious Galvatron, two die-hards who know how to bring the absolute ruffage to the plates. 'Cremation' is a proper sound clash destroyer with a ragga toasting sample to die for before the drop. Don't be fooled by 'Lovely', which sneaks in on some mellow intro business before collapsing into a mess of amen mashing brilliance. 'Eleusis' takes things in a more reliably mellow direction without losing that gritty sonic finish, and 'Somebody Else' goes in on the soul licks to stunning effect. A record of two halves, no doubt.

Alter (4:41)
Review: Japanese producer ENA is a master of deep electronic soundscapes and has always operated in an in between area that blurs ht lines between half tempo drum & bass and magic ambient trips. He does that again here with five unique cuts starting with the misty and grey sound world of 'Pulse2' with its barely there rhythm. '5.5' has deft sine waves and another suggestive rhythm that comes from heavily muffled and muted synth modulations and soft drum pads. 'The Brick' is movie-like deep space scene setting and 'The Worm Turns' is an ambient collage before 'Alter' closes out this artful experiment in texture and timbre.

Take You All Down (7:14)
How Dare He (6:50)
Review: Serious fighting talk from Etch right now as he threatens to 'Take You All Down' on the burgeoning Something System imprint. Hopefully he means it in more of a hearty pub brawl style of takedown and not a grubby, sleazy politician style of taking people down. Musically it definitely fits the former category; all bruising and swaggering with its ice cold chops and wallops, it's Etch in premium jungle mode. 'How Dare He' continues the aggressive edge but on more of a heavily swung 140 style jazzy vibe. Broken beats for broken Britain, give Etch a friendly punch if you see him in a pub, he totally deserves it.

Review: Based in The Netherlands, Fokuz Recordings has been a key drum & bass label since before the start of this current millennium. It does a wide range of styles from sold out in a flash r&b edits to rollers for the club. They have helped make the label head Focus a mainstay of the scene and now he's back with another top nugget on nice blue vinyl. 'Take Me As I Am' launches with hyper-speed breaks and ice-cold hi-hats before the lush and romantic 'Do 4 Love' soothes mind, body and soul. 'Long Way Up' is another one with a perfectly pitched r&b vocal sample and sleek beats before the pensive and late night, piano-laced cover of Depeche Mode that is 'Enjoy The Silence.'

Review: The quality d&b landing on Okbron just doesn't let up, as the prolific label turns its attention to Gen & Ryde, a new collaborative project between Mark Wilson and Ryan Miles. Mark Wilson is mostly associated with early Fokuz Recordings output from around 20 years ago, while Miles was dropping heat on Good Looking sister label Looking Good around the same time. If you love silken atmospheric d&b with a jazzy tint, you'll be more than satisfied by these immaculate conceptions, from the hazy funk of 'Low Frequency Satellite' to the smoky mood of 'Tian Fire'.

Noizette (2:12)
Review: Serge Geyzel is a Russian-born, Berlin-based producer responsible for many-a-belter, among others, on the titanic Brokntoys label. 'As Fallen Leaves' is his second EP for the Londoner label, and spans six cuts of explicitly 'heartbroken electronica', blending IDM, breaks, melancholic melodies and intricacies that are as difficult to pin down as we know it is to repair a broken heart. Cold, reversy piano overtones lay Geyzel's heart bare on the chilly title track. Things grow warmer on the ensuing tracks, with 'Observations' ricocheting away in an entertainingly laboured fashion, and closer 'Noizette' reintroducing a sense of uncertainty via experimental slow builds, and Shepard-esque tones and huge noise bursts to boot.

Review: Following his return to the controls last year on Tempo Records, Jason Goodings once again flies the Hidden Agenda flag, 20 years after his and his now tragically departed brother Mark last released music. Hugely pioneering in the deeper side of the Soul:r/Creative Source style of drum & bass, here Jason brings that timeless sound back into our souls again. 'Golden Sky' is a heart-breaking slab of cinematic goosebumpery while '1978' takes a grittier style of funk that matches the artwork personally painted by James Horrific himself. Vinyl only, this is a real moment to saviour.

Review: Don't get duped; Janaway might sound like an oldskool artist, but this is actually one of many recent cases of a contemporary artist operating under a retroistic guise. Jungle and breakbeat are Janaway's modus operandi, with them already having released two blazing heaters on mega-exclusivist white label wax for the niche imprint Mined Records. Now they debut their first solo venture for Sub Code: 'Inna The Dance' catapults us into four rave-twisted breaks smashers, from '24-7 Soundclash' to 'Sensi Lover'.
