Lit Up (4:40)
Lit Up (The remix) (3:51)
Review: A Skillz and Krafty Kuts are veteran names by now but at one option they were some of the hottest new DJs and producers in the game. They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Now they look to the roots of the sounds they used to draw from and serve up a new single on Jam City that is all about disco. 'Lit Up' has loose, jumbled drums and funk basslines with some great vocal flourishes up top from Gizelle Smith. A remix on the flip takes things into deeper new soul territory.

L' Altro Dio (Seq 1) (3:08)
Review: Alessandro Alessandroni is a library music legend who set the blueprint for the genre early on and then managed to get even more famous because of providing the iconic whistle on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The influential composer and musician had a big say in the world of soundtracks during the 60s and 70sFour Flies have often released his work or covers of it. The tunes on this 7" are taken from an obscure 1975 Italian film by Elio Bartolini. They walk the thin line between disco and funk and jazz-funk with big horn and rhythm sections. Both might have been lost forever if it weren't for the fact that this label put them on the now modern classic and hard to find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Voglie 'E Mare (4:14)
Review: From the dedicated Neopolitan archivists Periodica comes a holy grail reissue of a deep cover, highly coveted release from 1983. The groove on Tonino Balsamo's 'Sta Guagliona Mo Dda' is an absolute neck-snapper, with the toughest drum machine beat carrying slinky b-lines and slick synth lines alike while Balsamo flows in a semi-rap style over the top. It's a monster given a fresh master to cut it with any modern jam you care to throw its way in the mix, and the instrumental is on hand for those who want to zero in on that throbbing arpeggio. Also watch out for the dirty beatdown 'Voglia E Mare', which lays the synths on even thicker.

Main Attraction (Dr Packer remixes)
Main Attraction (Dr Packer remix) (7:23)
Main Attraction (Dr Packer dubstrumental mix) (7:08)
Review: High Fashion Music has dipped into the back catalogue of '80s electrofunk stars BB&Q Band before, asking long-serving Essex house producer Michael Gray to remix their much-loved scene anthem 'Dreamer'. This time round, they've asked Aussie star Dr Packer - a man famous for his popular updates of disco and boogie jams - to sprinkle some magic over 1986 single 'Main Attraction'. As you'd expect, his full vocal A-side 'remix' makes use of a lot of the band's original instrumentation - synths, synth-bass, sparkling guitar riffs etc - while adding a touch of easy-to-mix house swing. The flip-side 'Dubstramental', which cannily updates the 1980s boogie dub mix sound for 21st century dancefloors, is arguably even stronger.

Finger On The Trigger (4:37)
Crazy In Kingston (7 Inch rework) (4:04)
Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

Brandon's Song (5:09)
Review: Ben (Benjamin Robinson of Ben & Coco) and the Tight Squeeze Band have not long been getting us hot under the collar as Athens of the North put out a reissue of their AM Funk 7" only back in March. Now the faultless Edinburgh label is back with another pair of tunes from them that are just as good. 'Thumping For You' is nice loose-limbed, off-grid funk with love and wonky drums, happy sax lines and sustained chords bringing a golden touch next to the aloof vocals. 'Brandon's Song' is another uplifting one with seductive claps and shakers, squelchy leads and lush string synths.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Flying Fish dub) (2:57)
Review: Here's a cover which can't fail to please a huge crowd, as Betty Black takes on Eurythmics' eternal 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. Black has been hitting her stride as a modern day soul diva after moving on from her accomplished roots voicing some iconic UK garage tunes, and her cover of 'Cry Me A River' is no joke either. Backed up by The Family Fortune and bringing an undeniable 60s sass to her performance, she makes the track her own. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, the B-side has the slightly edited, dubbed out 'Work Out' version for when you want to work up a sweat.

Review: Seems it is time for this disco classic to get its latest reissue and we are always glad to hear it. It is a curious Italo disco gem from the rather mysterious Boeing. It came all the way back in 1982 and as soon as the needle hits the record it has you preparing for liftoff. Sprightly, funky and characterised by a classic, slightly trippy voice-of-god spoken word, cute synth squiggles and a rolling percussive layer that's almost too addictive. Comes complete with an instrumental if the vocal commands are just a little too much for you. This is a limited reissue on Full Time Production out of Italy.

Never Gonna Give You Up (7" edit) (4:21)
Review: Washington DC group Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers have got a real belting Latin tune on their hands here with 'Berro e Sombaro'. It's a tune that has been sampled many times over the years though you will be hard-pushed to find an original version anywhere. It was originally the last tune on Chuck's Bustin Loose album from 1979 and soon became a go-to funk track with a big impact that also saw it make a mark on the 80s rare groove scene. On the flipside here is an exclusive 7" edit of 'Never Gonna Give You Up', which was composed by Gamble & Huff composed and has never been on 45 rpm before.

Review: By now we should all know what to expect from the Breaks & Beats "Extended Breaks Special Edition" reworks, namely stretched-out versions of classic funk, soul and disco cuts that give extra priority to DJ-friendly drum breaks. This particular edition offers up revisions of two colossal cuts. On the A-side the un-named scalpel fiends get to work on James Brown's "Funky Drummer", stretching out the Godfather of Soul's impeccable original to a touch under five minutes. Willie Lindo - "Midnight" (6:51)
Review: Rock A Shaka out of Japan always cook up the good and for this new 45rpm they bring low slung funk, disco and boogie to a dubbed out reggae vibe thanks to a superb a-side from Ronnie Butler. 'Funky Rasta' has tinny analogue drums and crisp 80s production style with a great female vocal. Willie Lindo on the backside then offers up the more laid-back and horizontal dub sounds of 'Midnight' complete with natty acoustic chords and island-life atmospheres. Pure sunshine music for good times only, as always with this label.

He was signed up as lead singer of the legendary group The Spinners and had several web recover tunes and a few hits such as 'It's A Shame,' which was co-written and produced by Stevie Wonder. Review: The Selector Series has pulled out a big one for this year's Record Store Day celebrations. Both of these tunes are imagined classics reimagined that have a fresh West Coast jazz-funk feel and arrive on 45rpm together for the first time. The A-side has a rocky feel and is a version of The Beginning Of The End's 'Funky Nassau', while over on the other side Isaac Hayes' 'Shaft' gets a new psychedelic twist. This pari of covers by The Chuck Boris Trio are as brillaint as they are obscure and will cost you well over three figures if you can find an original. Both are remastered for this 7".

I'm A Lady (5:12)
I'm A Lady (radio edit) (5:12)
Review: East St. Louis soul singer Raye Cole is on the cusp of big things, having been picked up through talent scouting competitions and drawing praise from high places. Following a debut split single with Rachel Maxann last year, she's back on Original Gravity with her own outing, a hard-stepping, raunchy funk jam which serves as the perfect vehicle for her raw, righteous voice. As well as the slightly naughty original version of 'I'm A Lady' on the A side, there's also a tastefully censored 'Radio Version' on the flip in case you need to be mindful of your audience. Whichever version you plump for, the sass in those horn stabs tells the listener all they need to know.

Raye Cole - "You Gotta Set Me Free" (3:41)
Rachel Maxann - "You Gotta Set Me Free" (3:40)
Review: Another mighty fine reissue here from the masters of just that in the Original Gravity label. It features distorted organ loveliness here that continues with their practice of putting out new music in the style of old soul 7"s. On this split-flip 45, two of the most eminent soul vocalists out today share a side each. St. Louis singer Raye Cole helms the A-side, with her energetic number 'You Gotta Set Me Free' stomping on forward with a shaker-clapping, horn-heavy blues swing. Rachel Maxann - perhaps another alias similar to Nestor Alvarez - brings up the B on a finger-clicking alternate take on 'You Gotta Set Me Free'.

Cumbia De Sal (3:33)
Cumbia Sobre El Mar (2:35)
Review: Cumbias En Moog's Cumbia De Sal is an exemplary psychedelic cumbia single - from the main pushers of the niche South American genre, Vampisoul - which this time offers a distinct usage of the Moog synth. The Cumbias En Moog project began in Colombia as a wilfully unique vision that combined traditional cumbia rhythms with vintage synthesizers; two of the group's choicest cuts make it to vinyl here, 'Cumbia De Sal' and 'Cumbia Sobre El Mar'. Far more synthy than guitarry (most cumbia falls into the latter camp) the tracks pit an offbeat, goofy rhythm with stark Moogs, resonant leads and happily crude playing, while their haunting choral vocals add a human touch to said robotics.

Review: Italian producer Giovanni Damico has always put plenty of effort into making his sounds come alive with lush, rich melodies whatever genre he's making. Now it is Afro and disco grooves that power this EP, with more of those majestic chords. They have a retro feel here - with tinniness and old-school futurism embraced over elastic and acrobatic beats and bass. 'Watch Out' is a party starter to kick off then there are more lazy and sleazy jams like 'Nowhere' and there twisted electronics of 'Voodoo' bring plenty of invention and a variety of vivacious sounds to this EP.

Be Thankful For What You Got (7:09)
Blood Is Thicker Than Water (7:17)
Review: William Devaughn's most famous song has been covered umpteen times over the years, in all kinds of styles, but sometimes nothing can beat the original. 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is just one of those universal messages, delivered in such smooth, engaging insistency you feel it from the first time you hear it. Now Demon Singles Club are pressing it up as a single backed with the equally excellent but perhaps less well-known 'Blood Is Thicker Than Water'. The 1974 track tracks the same groove as its A-side counterpart and offers up a different lyrical message on top - something you'd normally associate with reggae, but when the backing track is this perfect it translates very nicely over to soul too.

Chez Madame La Baronne
Chez Madame La Baronne (Idjut Boys Fazz Junk version)
Review: Earlier this year, French disco and jazz-funk combo Chatobaron joined forces with fellow Parisian Dimitri From Paris for the rather good 'I Like (The Music That You Play)'. While that was a wholehearted disco workout, this speedy sequel sees the band (and their high-profile collaborator) explore their West Coast jazz-funk influences via an inspired workout full to bursting with killer instrumental solos, dusty grooves, memorable motifs and a genuinely killer, cowbell-sporting percussion brerak. This time round, there are no Dimitri From Paris remixes; instead, dubbed-out disco favourites the Idjut Boys are on hand to smother the track in tape echo and dub delay. The result is a typically spaced-out, low-slung affair that naturally makes the most of the band's killer bassline and layered percussion sounds.

All Night Long (4:52)
Review: Originally released in 1983 on Evergreen Records, the D.I.T. Band's split 7" 'You Bring Out The Best In Me' has been remastered and reissued for a new generation of fans - needless to say, that hardly detracts from both songs' appeal, which need no second introduction. A Prince-like funk snappiness is central to the tracks, nailing the ultra-swung mood of early '80s funk with its oohs and aoows - clearly, the aim is to make you scream, "tight!" For those who like it snappy, futuristic, and rare, this one's for you.

Review: TakeFingz is a new label out of Brisbane that won plenty of fans with its first offering and now comes on strong with a second bristling brew of beats. Much like Toby Gee who was behind the first 45rpm, Deejay Katch is a member of the Forty Five Kings Collective and has been laying down beats ever since the 80s while also being a key part of Resin Dogs, a famed Aussie hip-hop crew, since 1996. He opens with the unmistakable vocals Rakim for and centre on the -aide over timeless boom bop, them reworks a Gwen McRae break from '90% of Me Is You' with classic soul and hip-hop production on the flip. Here DJ Nature (AKA NYC-based exiled Bristolian Milo Johnson, once a founder member of the legendary Wild Bunch soundsystem) gets his chance to shine across a must-check double-pack. Now it is back via Cannonball Records with originals costing somewhere around L100. Big Lee Dowell And The Cannonballs Feat. Maxim Moston are behind 'What I Done Wrong' which has a lo-fi aesthetic and authentic old school feel - the dusty drums and soaring strings could be from the early 70s, and even the vocals have an authentic and original soul feeling. Review: Africa Seven's A7 Edits offshoot has already proved to be one of the better re-edit series around, primarily because they consistently employ some of the best re-editors in the business, offering them the opportunity to select tracks they want to rework from the parent label's vast catalogue of licensed cuts. This edition - the seventh EP to date - is another action-packed winner. Rising star Alan Dixon delivers a lightly tooled-up, all-action revision of Gyedu Bley Amadou's tropical disco classic 'Highlife', before Barcelona-based John Talabot and Pional re-frame Ekambi Brilliant's 'Afrika Afrika' as a kind of Afro-post-punk/dub disco mash-up. This open opens up with 'Alegria,' a sunny bit of easygoing soul with plenty of orchestral grandeur, big horn energy and the gently lilting vocals of the sisters up top. On the flip is 'Soy Una Nube,' another gorgeous cut this time with more of a 60s folk rock feel thanks to the acoustic guitars and psyched-out percussion. The expressive and often wordless vocals are the centre focus though, and bring real culture to the grooves.

This being their only collaboration, the fused efforts of Carl Johan Fogelklou and Fredrik Segerfalk make for an otherworldly experience, with lasery sound FX and a strange narration complementing this toothy electro-funk oddball. Their usual game is to have two artists occupy a single slice of vinyl, one for each side. 'Shoop E Doop' is a dusty and low-slung groove with plenty of attitude in the female verses and then there is more of an r&b bump n grind to the flip side, 'I Like It' (Wheels Of Steal mix) which brings retro charm to any dance.

Request Line (Coro Drive mix) (3:02)
Review: Maybe there has been a hip-hop revolution down under in recent times, or maybe we're only just getting wind of it, but either way there sure has been plenty of heat arriving on our racks this year so far. Brisbane-based label TakeFingz is a new outlet that backs that up with its first firing EP from Forty Five Kings Collective member Toby Gee taking charge. He has plenty of old school boucle in his beats here with 'Knee Deeper (Hump mix)' riding on fat bass with withering bars up top. There is a slower and more sensuous sound to 'Request Line' (Coro Drive mix) with a seductive r&b vocal. A great start for sure.

Review: The Demon Singles Club offers up a carefully curated selection of sought-after and classic tracks by legends from days gone by. Next up in the spotlight is Greg Henderson with some super lush disco and boogie vibes recorded back in the early 80s by the enigmatic artist. He only made a few records in his short career but they all made their mark and this one, 'Dreamin,' is a case in point: it will fill any floor with its catchy grooves and lush riffs which have all been reasserted for this special reissue project.

Review: Here we have four disco edits aimed straight at the dancefloor, rumoured to come from within the Crazy P camp. On the first edition of Hot Today (get it?), you've got them making a truly hot mess on 'Custard Everywhere' and by hot we mean proper summertime vibes on this low slung number, which is followed on the A-side by the funky disco dub 'The Vibe'. Over on the flip, there's a wonderful cover of a certain Little Stevie classic in the form of 'Love's The Cure'.

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (acappella) (3:11)
Review: Indeep's 1982 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' is a stone cold classic. It has been remixed several times over the years and never stops attracting new audiences with each passing generation. On this latest reissue we get the 1980s New York-based trio's still hard-to-beat original version as well as the acapella and Smeddles's More Ass mix and More Ass dub. They are subtle reworkings that tweak the original for a little more dancefloor heft but do nothing to distill its still golden charms and catchy hooks.

Tormenta Tropical (part 2)
Review: Jazz N Palms is an elusive entity - are they a label, collective of DJs, or just one person: the producer Riccio? Whatever the case, they've got something of a rep for passionately mixing jazz and tropical music. Known for their regular parties at Pikes Ibiza (a classic spot - don't miss a visit if you go), their M.O. is to spin records only from an extensive collection of rare and exotic waxen slab vaults. Their EP 'Tormenta Tropical' here amounts as much to a tribute to this beloved music: Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms unfurl across just two neat cuts, as they're peppered by incredible guitar solos and bass propulsions. The essence of a tropical storm is thus caught in a sonic ester.

Good Love (reissue)

Good Love (vocal) (3:56)
Good Love (instrumental) (4:33)
Review: Proper boogie-funk stylee from Rome Jeffries, first recorded in 1983 as a paean to confident, smooth loving. The sultry mood of the song is backed by its cut-up claps, bouncy synth piques, and weighty veneer, which all went on to contribute to its later status as a sought-after diggers' slab. As much is ever-more evidenced on the instrumental B-side, which has an unprecedented - dare we say cheek-slapping - grit to it.

Jodie - "I'm Not Your Fool" (3:40)
Floyd James & The GTs - "Johnnie's Blues" (3:37)
Review: More scorching hot soul sounds here from Original Gravity who look to Jodie and Floyd James and the GTs for their latest dose of 7" goodness. Jodie is in powerful form on the a-side as she delivers an empowering vocal over fast paced and chested-puffed drums that will steamroller all in their wake. This soul anthem has class and depth with some slick guitar solos and big horn energy. Floyd James & The GTs step up on the flip side with 'Johnnie's Blues' which is full of Hammond organ chords and 60s guitar riffs.
