WAP (radio edit) (3:07)
WAP (instrumental) (3:09)
Review: Cardi B and Meghan Thee Stallion's 'WAP' was a game changer for both artists but also the music world at large. It was the sound of two women centering themselves and their sexuality on their own terms. It annoyed the President, it got lots of gammons mad at the explicitness of the lyrics despite men getting away with similar smut for years and it became a huge hit. Even now a couple of years on it still bangs with the tight new school production and tongue-in-cheek bars. All radio, explicit and instrumental versions are presented here on nice pink wax.

Deep Tannin (feat Rafael Leafar) (5:49)
Refugee (4:00)
Little Dancer (4:49)
2 Bottles (3:33)
Review: The classy sounds of Detroit label MotorCity Wine will get any house head hot under the collar. For their latest serving, they turn to DCTL about which we know next to nothing but are already big fans off the back of this one. The smoky deep beats of 'Deep Tannin' (feat Rafael Leafar) kick off with a classic vocal sample drifting up top to add the soul. 'Refugee' is a slow and purposeful beatdown cut with lovely dusty drums and sustained chords while 'Little Dancer' layers up jazzy off-grid chords with disheveled beats to loose-limbed effect. '2 Bottles' is a loungey trip-hop closer with vibes to spare.

Let The Funk Hit 'Em (3:56)
90% Of Main Source (4:04)
Review: TakeFingz is a new label out of Brisbane that won plenty of fans with its first offering and now comes on strong with a second bristling brew of beats. Much like Toby Gee who was behind the first 45rpm, Deejay Katch is a member of the Forty Five Kings Collective and has been laying down beats ever since the 80s while also being a key part of Resin Dogs, a famed Aussie hip-hop crew, since 1996. He opens with the unmistakable vocals Rakim for and centre on the -aide over timeless boom bop, them reworks a Gwen McRae break from '90% of Me Is You' with classic soul and hip-hop production on the flip. Two more fine fusions.

Juicy Juice (3:29)
Review: Musclecuts provides all the pump you need for your party with this new limited edition orange 7" from DJ Shepdog. His Party Breaks & Bullshit EP mashes together a collage of legendary samples from hip hop greats like Notorious BIG. The drums hit hard, the scratching, melodies and basslines all pop with character and colour and made for non stop good times. And that's just the A-side. On the flip, Dr Dre, amongst others, is dropped into the funky breaks next to more from B.I.G. A real DJ weapon for sure.

Nights (5:08)
Review: Frank Ocean's 'Pink + White' was produced by Pharrell Williams and features some uncredited backing vocals from Beyonce. The track details Ocean's memories of his youth and a time when someone close to him died - someone who had taught him lessons that stayed with him - and so naturally the theme of mortality features a lot. The title comes from the sky he saw while driving with this old friend and it's a gorgeously deep and sultry piece of r&b that comes backed with 'Nights' on this limited edition 7".

Shoop E Doop (3:07)
I Like It (Wheels Of Steal mix) (3:22)
Review: Brisbane-based label TakeFingz has already carved out a fan base after its first cook of EPs. They came from Forty Five Kings Collective members Deejay Katch and Toby Gee, who returns once more here for the label's third fresh 45rpm. This is classic beat work that draws on several vital hip-hop and soul sources to cook up all-new yet recognisable sounds. 'Shoop E Doop' is a dusty and low-slung groove with plenty of attitude in the female verses and then there is more of an r&b bump n grind to the flip side, 'I Like It' (Wheels Of Steal mix) which brings retro charm to any dance.

Request Line (Coro Drive mix) (3:02)
Review: Maybe there has been a hip-hop revolution down under in recent times, or maybe we're only just getting wind of it, but either way there sure has been plenty of heat arriving on our racks this year so far. Brisbane-based label TakeFingz is a new outlet that backs that up with its first firing EP from Forty Five Kings Collective member Toby Gee taking charge. He has plenty of old school boucle in his beats here with 'Knee Deeper (Hump mix)' riding on fat bass with withering bars up top. There is a slower and more sensuous sound to 'Request Line' (Coro Drive mix) with a seductive r&b vocal. A great start for sure.

Review: Hip-hop head and dizzyingly dexterous DJ J Rocca is back with another musical celebration of the exit from office of the worst president in the history of the United States of America. This is the 6th such volume of 'Impeach' and it is a tight woven tapestry and skilful mash-up of no fewer than 14 flips of surely one of the most sampled songs in the history of hip hop. Masterfully mixed together and limited to 500 copies, this is a strong sonic statement that will stand the test of time.

Mash (1:41)
Review: Richard Roberts and Andrew Harber kicked off Letherette back in 2008, soon signing to Ninja Tune and Ho Tep before settling into a steady groove with their own label Wulf. That's where they return to for this short and sweet 7", digging into their track 'Woop Baby' for an extended mix trip on the A-side. It's a choppy, funkified joint with low-slung bass and diced up soul vocals which will get any downtempo situation locked in hard. Switching things up on the flip, 'Mash' leans towards a Motown strut with resplendent horn hooks and more soul than the bottom of your shoe. Just check those vibraslap hits.

Magnum - "Squivatch" (short version) (5:19)
Golden Voice & CJ & Kid Bee Rock - "Mixmaster" (5:47)
Magnum - "Squivatch" (Full version) (7:56)
Review: Way back in 1981, legendary Bronx producer Bullwackie - an exiled Jamaican famous for founding the influential, boundary-blurring, reggae-rooted Wackies imprint - launched a new label named after his daughter, Shevone. It released just one record, a now sought-after - and impossible to find 12" containing a trio of early NYC hip-hop cuts informed by his own dub and dancefloor reggae productions. This Backatcha reissue boasts both cuts from the original 12", plus the never-heard-before shortened version of 'Squivatch', a hybrid disco-rap/disco-reggae number rich in rubbery slap bass, pleasingly loose-limbed drums, squally electric guitar riffs, heavy horns and delay effects aplenty. That's best enjoyed in its full-length version form, which includes more production trickery from Bullwackie. 'Master Mix', meanwhile, is a subtly dubby, synth-sporting formative hip-hop gem featuring a rap crew who later enjoyed success as Chapter III.

Life Is Like A Dice Game (feat Cordae & Freddie Gibbs) (4:45)
Life Is Like A Dice Game (instrumental) (4:44)
Review: A whole bunch of Nas singles are being reissued on 7" courtesy of Mass Appeal at the moment, and each one is as essential now as it was when it first arrived. This one is slightly different as 'Life is like a Dice Game' was a demo and one of the firm fan favourites from the legendary New York mic man, taken from his undeniably best period - the Illmatic era. Now 30 years old, it gets revisited and completed properly with Freddie Gibbs and Cordae, who were 11 years old and not born when the track was initially recorded in 1993. The unfinished original version leaked in 1995 so to finally have it officially completed is epic.

Ultra Black (vocal version) (3:21)
Ultra Black (instrumental version) (3:22)
Review: US rap royalty Nas's 'Ultra Black' features producer Hit-Boy and was released in mid-summer 2020 as the lead single from his thirteenth album, King's Disease. Lyrically, Nas pays homage to all things Black as he draws on his black heritage and African-American culture while the beats remain deeply laidback with jazzy chords up top. In an interview at the time with NME, the rapper said the song "represents love" although some interpreted the lyrics as a diss towards singer and rapper Doja Cat. This 7" features the vocal version and an instrumental.

It's Just Amazing (Instruemental mix 2) (4:52)
Review: Street soul is one of the many short lived but vital in between genres that have emerged from the studios of the UK over the decades. Pause was an early act who excelled at the form as two incredibly rare and hard to find tunes that are both being pressed up bony Freestyle this month prove. The first one comes on this 12" in the form of 'It's Just Amazing' with various different mixes. The vocal mix pairs lo-fi drum breaks with shards of 80s synth stabs and a gorgeous vocal harmony finished perfectly by a melancholic bassline. The two instrumental mixes are even more dusty and lo-fi but the vocal version is the one that will always stand out and get the floor in a tizzy.

Review: This week, Pause's two incredibly rare 12' singles have been officially reissued for the first time. Pause was a UK street soul group formed as a side-project of The Administrators, who achieved a series of hits on the lovers rock scene during the late 80s. The smooth space-age soul jam 'Got to Know' and the seminal electro-boogie of 'It's Just Amazing' represent the entirety of the group's output. Originally self-released in limited quantities, these 12"s is highly sought-after on the secondhand market, so don't miss your chance to grab this lost British soul classic.

Their latest in-stock wares can be found on the shelf labelled Surf Chicks! Part 2, one of two selections (in EP form) that pay homage to the unforgettable surf and party scenes of US West Coast. What It Feels Like
Review: Potatohead People's classic tune 'What It Feels Like' featuring T3 (Slum Village), Kapok and Illa J, first released in 2020 alongside an unmatched live video, gets not only a reissue on vinyl here but a remix treatment from in-demand bass player Carrtoons. Switching up the order of the verses, dubbing out the horns and adding in his signature basswork, Carrtoons brings a fresh flavour to the track's already steaming, boom-bap verve. Fans of Anderson Paak, Smoove or anyone operating in the crossover of neo-soul, jazz and rap will be much pleased by this one.

Everybody Pays (Professor Shorthair remix) (4:52)
Review: Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern day 'deep funk' supergroup from Los Angeles, led by guitarist, producer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Ubick and trumpeter/arranger Todd M. Simon. On their new single 'Everybody Pays', they team up with Detroit rap legend Guilty Simpson and soulful singer Destani Wolf for a hard-hitting slice of hip-hop funk. The A-side features Guilty's gritty rhymes over a heavy groove and a catchy chorus by Destani, while the B-side is an instrumental version that showcases the tight, unparalled musicianship of The Keystones, a whopping octet. Vintage funk heads beware; this one's probably gonna find its way into your collections one way or another.

Shaft's Kung Fu Car Chase (3:32)
Review: There seems to be something in the water down under right now because we've had a wealth of hot new hip-hop records arrive from Australia that are sure to heat up many a dancefloor this summer and beyond. This new 45 rpm from Hydrofunk Records kicks off with Resin Dogs feat Dialectrix, a beat maker from Sydney who now resides in Melbourne and has been big in the game since the early 2000s. It also sees the return of the Horny Dogs Brass Section to help serve up some old school funk with plenty of big breaks and slick scratching. Flip it over and you'll get 'Shaft's Kung Fu Car Chase' which is another percolating bit of drum-led and break-y funk with more attention-grabbing horns.

Review: Vince Cartier has picked out a couple of r&b classics and taken them into his studio for a smart and subtle edit job. Up first is the silky smooth and timeless 'Whats Up' with its crunchy breaks and lavish chords topped off with that smoky, seductive vocal line. On the flip is the more potent and punchy 'Say I' with its empowering female leads, big drums and bright chords. This is a sweet 7" that cannot fail to get that dancefloor vibing with some golden 90s energy.

Review: 5 Borough Breaks is a firm favourite with old-school hip-hop heads. The label has another hot one on its books here with a boom bap classic from Smut Peddler in the shape of 'One By One' feat Cage & Mr Eon. It's moody, low slung and menacing and a real backpacker staple that has smooth flowing bars over lazy but locked in beats. On the flip is Lyn Christopher's super rare 'Take Me With You', a raw soul cut with the bass riffs that are sampled so well on the A-side lending it darkened vibe. Two stone cold killers.

Review: The second analog release from the Japanese hip-hop label Warufuzake, 'Coffee' hears the amusingly-named Soy Ayers helm up production and rap duties for a new release on 7" wax. The track is a playful b-boy-breaksy hip-hop cut that regales the story of men seducing the objects of their affections with euphemistic 'coffee'. Exquisitely illustrated and obi-stripped, we can't wait to hear more from this new venture and wisecracking moniker.
