Selador Decade Vol 1
3D & Robert Owens - "Known Love" (7:51)
Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

About Time EP
Cat: DRAGA 004. Rel: 03 May 23
About Time (6:57)
Planet (7:13)
Receiver (14:37)
Review: There is no shortage of top labels to come out of Romania that deal in futuristic tech and minimal house fusions. Draganenii is one of the newer ones but one that is already making its own name. A R steps up with the imprint's fourth EP here and it kicks off with the clipped, punchy house of 'About Time' complete with late-night chords and prickly percussion. After that heavy stomper comes the more floating acid modulations and cosmic house of 'About Time', then 'Receiver' shuts down with wonky lines, gurgling bass and a trippy energy.

Abdul Raeva - "Grace" (6:11)
Gene Tellem - "Nervous Planet" (5:36)
Nesa Azadikhah - "Fleeting Emotions" (5:45)
Alien D - "Heavy Cream" (6:31)
Review: It's time to take your first steps into the Kulture Galerie, a new label that kicks off with a various artists offering which lays out is sonic mission in clear and compelling terms. This new venture from Metropolitan Soul Museum kicks off with the super fluid and liquid house sounds of Abdul Raeva's 'Grace' before Gene Tellem's 'Nervous Planet' gets all misty eyed and downtempo with a lush deep thinker. Nesa Azadikhah's 'Fleeting Emotions' then sets off a nice minimal vibe that is super warm and fuzzy and Alien D's 'Heavy Cream' is a float, breakbeat driven post-rave comedown.

I Got To Know
Cat: RFGV 005. Rel: 16 May 23
I Got To Know
I Got To Know (Alden Tyrell remix)
I Got To Know (Dick Johnson remix)
Review: After their last outing 'Atomic' sold out, Acid Jerks are back on Refuge with more of their 303 fuelled madness. They have a tried and tested sound by now but who will ever grow tired of ragged acid house? 'I Get To Know' has it all - the prickly acid squelch, the splintered and wooden drums and the dark and menacing vocal over the top. It's perfect warehouse music. Dutchman Alden Tyrell then roughs it up a little more with his Chicago-indebted remix and Dick Johnson adds a little bounce to the drums and layers in some slinky hi hats for a more undulating sound.

Moblack Gold Vol V
ACN - "Creatures" (6:10)
Emanuele Esposito - "Tuwani" (feat Mavhungu) (7:27)
Eden Shalev - "Cantos De Dennadon" (feat Cantos Des Baobab) (5:00)
Simo Moumen - "Samsara" (7:27)
Review: .Naples-based Afro house label MoBlack returns with the fifth edition in its various artist series titled Gold, tapping some of the scene's heavy hitters for their unique style of contributions to the catalogue. ACN opens up with the entrancing spiritualism of 'Creatures' on the A-side, followed by some of Emanuele Esposito's hypnotic polyrhythms on 'Tuwani' (feat Mavhungu). Over on the flip, Eden Shalev will elevate you with the truly life-affirming vibes of 'Cantos De Dennadon' (feat Cantos Des Baobab) and finally Simo Moumen treads deeper into moodier territory on the heady 'Samsara'.

Cat: OOFF 004. Rel: 24 May 23
Funkier Than You (7:35)
NFSE (6:16)
Back & Forth (7:43)
Bees (8:14)
Review: Long time friend Akyra from Switzerland (by way of Italy) follows up releases on Blind Vision, WE_R House and Modula Records to join One Of 4, on this latest release alongside Italian compatriot Demi James. Four proper house jams on this one titled 'Akyjam'; there's the dub-tinged stomp of A1 cut 'Funkier Than You' which calls to mind classic Cab Drivers, while the quirked-out minimal house off 'NFSE' follows in suit. Over on the flip, 'Back & Forth' takes on a classic UK tech house flavour that's quite infectious, and finally the hypnotic swing of 'Bees' closes it out in style with more for the afterhours.

Techno Mafia (12:42)
Sleep Banger (13:44)
Review: Chicago-born, Sweden-based Amir Alexander (Vanguard Sound!/Anunnaki Cartel) returns with an amazing new label named Building 7. On its first release titled 'Techno Mafia', he explores 'mega hypnotic minimalism' as heard on the A-side title track, which makes for the perfect afterhours jam which to get those heads down on the dancefloor. Turn over to the other side and you've got the lean and subtle early morning dub of 'Sleep Banger', featuring some truly eerie chords underpinned by clipped yet unrelenting rhythms, which will keep the party going well into Monday morning.

Changes (Mike Dunn remix) (6:22)
Review: Emerging as a notable name in the UK house scene, Alisha made 2022 her year with standout tracks on Eastenderz and performances at renowned events like Warehouse Project, INPUT, and Amnesia for Jamie Jones' Paradise. Now gearing up for an even bigger year, she drops her latest single 'Changes' on Hot Creations, with a classy remix by house music icon Mike Dunn. With tough kicks, rumbling low-ends, and squelchy synths, 'Changes' warps and drives, anchored by a hooky and infectious vocal sample. Mike Dunn's remix delivers a soulful, swirling journey with rich chords and delightful house music.

Stanton Carlisle (5:30)
Navarone Again (5:16)
Review: Amor fati is one of the core principles of stoicism - translated into English as "love of fate", or "love of one's fate" - it should therefore come as no surprise that Amor Fati's production work seems to dig deep into atmospheres while still riding on the immediate infectiousness of tech. Split over two tracks, the EP is a real giver, managing to do multiple things at once and not drop a single spinning plate. 'Stanton Carlisle', for example, nods to toy box techno and sharp micro house, all razor high hats, stepping snares, and bounding energy, using friendly noises to develop an arrangement that really doesn't let up. Over on 'Navarone Again', we're in more of a synth wave dystopia, waves of retro harmony and slightly ominous choral vocals intermixed with a sample about leaders of the universe.

Aron - "Shift"
Distilled Noise - "Trenta"
Idana - "Sunday"
Vern - "Orizont"
Review: Italian label Micro Orbit takes its bow here in the form of a various artists' EP across a nice heavyweight 12". Aron opens up with 'Shift' which is a bubbly minimal house cut with aqueous synths and popping drums. Distilled Noise's 'Trenta' then layers up more silky synth sounds with underlapping bass waves lifting you off your feet. Idana ups the ante with more uptempo and quickened drums and bass loops that are detailed with gorgeously wispy melodies on 'Sunday' before Vern closes down with 'Orizont' which is the most sleek and tech-y cut of the lot. As far as first releases go, this is one that bodes well for the future.

It's Timeless (5:22)
Radiance (4:59)
Disorder (6:46)
Review: Lost Palms return with an atmospheric ambient techno cut from newcomer Astro. The Edinburgh-based producer prefers to make dance music of the quietly space-age variety, demonstrating a neat penchant for cosmic transitions, filter-blends and awestruck arpeggiations. Thematically, the artist knows well what they're getting at: A-sider 'It's Timeless' titularly nods at its own structural indeterminacy, while flip cuts 'Radiance' and 'Disorder' get nice and trancey with it by comparison.

Powermood (8:06)
Mucanue (8:05)
Review: New label Autochrome kicks off with good intent - not only does this one come on nice heavyweight wax with a cheeky Homer Simpson logo, but the minimal tech beats are fresh indeed. 'Ritmatic' is all bubbly lines and underlapping bass, with gurgling synths making you move. 'Powermood' then gets more funky, with clipped bass vocals smeared into the arrangement to bring soul and dynamism. 'Mucanue' closes out with balmy cosmic pads swirling around clacking drums. A fine debut.

OUT-SLD (4:35)
IN-SLD (4:33)
BAD-SLD (4:46)
SLD-EFFECTS (3:51)
Review: Those with even a basic knowledge of Italian dance music will have come across Alex Neri productions before; during the 1990s, he recorded loads of house (and less frequently, techno), under a wide variety of aliases. In 1991, he donned the Axe Corner alias (alongside studio buddies Adriana Dodici, Marco Baroni and Pietro Peretti) and delivered Tortuga, an EP of moody blends of house and techno that now sound surprisingly far-sighted. A-sides 'OUT-SLD' and 'IN-SLD' are both forthright but funky techno outings whose bleeping lead lines and thickset grooves pay tribute to the then-massive bleep & bass sound (albeit without the colossal sub-bass and dub reggae influences that style was famous for), while flip-side cuts 'BAD-SLD' and 'SLD-Effects' deliver tougher, late-night takes on the organ-rich Italo-house sound.

B Love - "Thumb Milk" (5:34)
Rokko - "Sunset Frequency" (6:11)
Mathijs Smit - "Backwards" (7:33)
Herra - "Thesis Trax" (5:30)
Review: Picnic tends towards flaunting the eclecticism of the British underground, standing in stark opposition to conformity. B Love, Rokko, Mathijs Smit and Herra come through for their latest V/A here, each with their own unique style and flavour to the four-way table - whether they work in deep house, techno, or the cheekier side of speed-garage-ambient. As 'Thumb Milk' says in the pre-drop moment of pause: "do what you feel, when you feel like it". Such is the exact feel of this EP, from the idyllic chordwork of Rock's 'Sunset Frequency' to the organic organry of 'Going Backwards'.

Anton Kubikov - "Introland"
Anton Kubikov - "Spring Reverce Echo Delay"
Review: Two sides of mega-minimal, textural minimal and a dash of drone here, shared equally between friends Bastian Balders and Anton Kubikov. The producers bring a sophistication to the tech, reflecting the huge variation in the emotions they indulge. Something between ecstasy and horror is heard on Balders' 'Machinery', while Kubikov's 'Introland' is comparatively hopeful and tearjerking, with its delayed piano refractions and filtery-in-and-out strings.

Review: Following releases on AD 93 and Something Happening Somewhere, Amsterdam-based producer Bas Dobbelaer brings a four track EP to British imprint Trule exploring the many shades of techno. Whether it's hypnotising minimal techno ('HSS-01') or introspective IDM journeys into the deeper recesses of the mind ('Plural'), to ventures into the more off-kilter strains of the deep and atmospheric variety ('Movements') and glacial dub techno recontextualisations ('Layers Of Territory') - Dobbelaer demonstrates his high production abilities on this fine release.

Transatlantic
Cash Call
Euro Gap
Rm90
Review: Nick Beringer is a man who can program and brilliantly tight and kinetic groove with his drum machines no matter the genre. This new 12" on Abartik finds him doing just that, firstly within a house framework on 'Transatlantic', a nice deep and silky cut with effortlessly cool vibes. 'Cash Call' is a more gritty minimal and tech fusion with bobbling bass and splashy hi hats, then 'Euro Gap' mixes up gurgling acid with neon chords and nice trippy designs that will work the afters. 'Rm90' keeps up that vibe with more deft designs and liquid electronic funk that waves its way deep into your brain.

Review: This acid tech-trance gem was first released in 1996, and first made an appearance on the suitably Star Trek-themed Spock Records, an Italian label that saw to much trance of the utmost quality get released during its Italo heyday. The victim of horrible scalping, it's well overdue for a rerelease. 'Fun-K' is the highlight, showing off producer Bhasmantam's (Gieuseppe Pol's) sensitive and detail-oriented trance production chops, straddling euphoria and technicality in a manner that does not alienate or confuse. The remaining tunes are more breathable and minimal affairs, but all build a world that captivate as they do enthrall.

Cucuma (8:21)
Review: Stephan Bodzin has a long and illustrious career in the field of German tech house, and while he may be still very much active in delivering new material like last year's Boavista album, it's nice to be reminded of some of his early classics. Following on from the reissue of 2006 12" Valentine comes this, the mighty Kerosene. It's a record very much of its time, capturing that crisp, digital sound which soundtracked countless parties big and small, but taken out of context it's plain to hear how it hasn't aged a bit, sounding as seductive and immersive as it did back then.

Papillon (7:17)
Review: German artist Stephan Bodzin has done a fine job of keeping himself at the forefront of the melodic techno world, not least with his always boundary-pushing live shows. He takes that energy into the studio when cooking up his scintillating club tracks, too, and always has. This reissue on his own Herzblut label revisits one of his many stand cuts. 'Valentine' is a wonky one with creepy bass and mysterious melodies over crunchy tech beats. 'Papillon' takes flight like its butterfly namesake, with elegant leads and rubbery bass all doused in glorious melodic rain that has a sci-fi edge.

Reggie Dokes - "End Of Time" (5:24)
Review: Norm Talley's Upstairs Asylum label only arrived in 2021 but is already up there with the great Motor City imprints. The boss has been busy putting together a trio of new EPs for the first half of 2023 that showcases a wealth of Mid-West talent. House hero Boo Williams kicks off this one with his typically tight drum programming and party-starting synth work on 'Tickin Clock.' Eric Johnson keeps it raw, deep and loopy on 'Melodic Gruv' then Reggie Dokes brings his signature Atlanta house sound to 'Mother's Child' with its melancholic lead sax and 'End of Time' is a broken beat bliss out.

Bittersweet
Review: 'Hypnotic' is the kind of EP that could potentially up the intrigue in tech house for all the snobs out there. The latest project from Daniel Broeseck, a minimal / microhouse producer from Germany - whose efforts have seen him drop several EPs on labels like Vivus, Tzinah and Baile Musik - here presents his very best work so far; surreptitious shuffles, suspenseful lighter-flicks, ghostly pad swells, and dubby undulations all appear, making for enticing beds on which the tracks' star vocoder-ghosts (check 'Moves' and 'Bittersweet') can rest.

Remember (6:44)
Review: Constant Sound co-owner James 'Burnski' Burnham delivers a stonking pair of garage-flecked house tracks that offer up no nonsense dancefloor attitude in spades. 'Shout' is all about its monster rhythmic framework, with economic splashes of synths on the side simply maintaining the flavour and a properly full on old skool breakdown. Flip track 'Remember' leans a little further towards UK garage with its sugar sweet female vocal snippets, but the central groove hustles and bustles along with maximum weightiness, making it suitable for any number of differing dancefloors.

Review: Derek Carr has been pretty untouchable in the last couple of years. His work in the fields of deep house and deep techno has been consistently innovative and captivating. He takes care of the eighth EP on the Trident label now with more of his serene sound designs and dynamic grooves. 'Allez' heads off into the cosmos with balmy pads and smooth drums then acid lashes about the mix of 'I Want You' which rides a nice tight, clipped, locked-in drum line. Things get more loose and star gazing on 'Revival' while 'Typhoon' closes with playful synth patterns tumbling down over invitingly warm deep house drums.

Review: The distinctly otherworldly sound of Chivalry was established with a first EP. And that's about all we know about this new label that said when EP 12 arrived back in December that "the participants of Chivalry will always remain anonymous. Very limited, always secret." Fine by us when the music is this good: 'Track 1' is electro-tinged techno with a cosmic edge and bouncing drums. 'Track 2' layers in some retro synth sounds that remind of video games like Wipeout and 'Track 3' brings more of a tech house groove with finger clicks and rubbery bass under mysterious pads. 'Track 4' closes out on gritty tech slaps and mechanical rhythms for sweaty floors.

Cyprus Falls (6:38)
Kyiv (Grant Dell Tribalation remix) (7:58)
Review: The second vinyl release on Midnight Social comes from Adam Collins, one half of iconic US tech house duo Omni A.M. and an all-round seasoned pro in the field of stripped-back, headsy club gear. If you can't get enough of that sound then you're going to be all over this record, which reaches from the strict rhythmic workout of 'Kyiv' to the cheeky chord stabs of 'Three White Doves', the deep blue waters of 'Cyprus Falls' and on to Grant Dell's 'Tribulation' remix of 'Kyiv' which reaches into boxy, trip-out territory for the blurry end of the dance.

Review: Mirko Hecktor and Tom Sprenger founded Terra Magica in 2021 as a platform for their brand of psychedelically-charged house and techno, and they've quickly built up a strong identity and a burgeoning community of likeminded astral travellers. Look no further than this quality split release for all the proof you need, as Lucas Croon threads Balearic, prog and trance together before the label bosses (Hektisch Sprengen DJs) weave some mystical mantras of their own and Dea revels in boxy Chicago jack crossed with Island boogie. It's an eclectic mix to be sure, with another three joints taking in uptempo proto-trance and anthemic emo-acid-breaks aplenty. Draw for the big feelings and get freaky in the process - what's not to love?

JUAAN - "Tu Bass" (6:02)
Camilo Gil & One +1 - "Pisak" (5:43)
Review: Presenting the second part of Extrasensorial Catalog's inaugural release, featuring some of the most exceptional South American electronic music talents. On 'Dead City', Pedro d'Alessandro delivers an introspective experimental dubby sound, reflecting his vast experience as a producer. The ascendant Uruguayan duo Bok-p on 'Focus' deliver a refreshing track that blends 90s breaks, techno and house infused with a well-known Uruguayan flavor. The B-side showcases a peak-time bomb from the Argentinean producer JUAAN, destined to make the crowd go wild, while 'Pisak', by Camilo Gil & One + 1 features hypnotic beats and dreamy pads with minimal influences.
