Funky Drummer (reissue)
Funky Drummer (reissue) (7" limited to 300 copies repress)
Cat: BAB 014. Rel: 22 May 23
James Brown - "Funky Drummer" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:48)
Jimmy Smith - "Root Down" (extended Breaks Special edition) (3:40)
Review: By now we should all know what to expect from the Breaks & Beats "Extended Breaks Special Edition" reworks, namely stretched-out versions of classic funk, soul and disco cuts that give extra priority to DJ-friendly drum breaks. This particular edition offers up revisions of two colossal cuts. On the A-side the un-named scalpel fiends get to work on James Brown's "Funky Drummer", stretching out the Godfather of Soul's impeccable original to a touch under five minutes. Over on the flip you'll find a tidy version of Jimmy Smith classic "Root Down" that starts and ends with mixable loops of the track's insatiable groove.

All Of A Sudden (5:28)
Review: Hey boys, hey girls... Chemical Brothers are back with some superstar business and all is well with the world. Instantly slipping into their signature, 'No Reason' smacks with everything we love about Tom and Ed. Big funk bassline, cheeky party samples and a presence that could get everyone from your nan to your naughty next door neighbour dancing. 'All Of A Sudden' takes us up a few gears in a way that only the Chemmys can; unrelenting laser bass marching music that pushes and pushes and pushes to the very end. Here we go!

In Rave We Cave (1st Edition)
Forty Fings Dynamo - "Inversion" (6:37)
Tingz - "Raveolution" (Acid mix) (6:10)
Pedro Bertho - "TOITOI" (6:33)
COEO - "Vertigo" (4:40)
Review: It's all about the early 90s vibes on this 12" from Fauvre as four underground anthems from the era are revisited. Forty Wings Dynamo's 'Inversion' has a dubby, dreamy progressive house feel, its epic outlook and echoing percussion inevitably bringing Leftfield's first handful of 12"s to mind, before 'Raveolution' (Acid mix) brings a more jungle techno feel with sliced up breaks skittering around the four-to-the-floor kicks. Pedro Bertho's 'TOITOI' starts side two, nodding to Jaydee's 'Plastic Dreams' with its soulful keys creating magic over a simple, banging techno framework before COEO's 'Vertigo' gets to work with its proto-breakbeat beats and one utterly orgasmic breakdown. Well worth a step back in time.

Review: Leftfield really managed to make lightning strike twice back in their heyday. After the pair's seminal self-titled debut album set a new benchmark for what was possible with a dance music full length, they managed to do it again with Rhythm & Stealth. It will be forever best known for the tune that was picked and used in the Guinness advert ('Phat Planet') but that is just one of the many highlights. The album originally came in 1999 and was nominated for the 2000 Mercury Music Prize as well as making number one on the UK Albums Chart. It is a full-fat mix of epic basslines, driving percussion and dark moods that adds up to a head-melting soundtrack to a damn good night.

Review: We don't know anything about this new self titled EP and label project from MSZ but the music is well worth talking about. 'Track 1' sets off at a slick pace with polished and punchy drums layered up with balmy chords and a classy peak time energy that will get fists skyward and faces smiling. It's a smooth and super cool opener, and the second cut is no less colourful and charming with its busy, garage-tinged drums and low-key bassline funk. On the flip are two more cuts that mix house, tech, electro, breaks, bass and spaced-out vibes into something driving and dynamic.

Supercade is one that's been long anticipated by fans of their well designed breakbeat sounds and their first since 1995's Blood & Sweat on D*Fusion. As such there is a hint of 90s post rave magic to the 11 cuts here, all with cosmic intent and deep grooves - tunes that have you lost in a reverie on the heart of the dance floor but with your gaze turned skyward. Essential stuff.

They are also an award-winning live act who have brought new energy and invention to techno as well as a next level grasp of sound design. As such the pair are two of the most revered artists in the UK with a hardcore fan base who pack out their every gig. They will find plenty to love here on an adventurous record that features all the hallmarks you would expect of this duo as well as plenty of freshness.

Secret Place (Raw cut) (6:31)
Talking About (6:18)
Ici (A Paris) (6:41)
Review: In his only previous outing on vinyl, Gabriel Belabbas delivered a well informed and expertly executed tribute to the organ-sporting, sub-heavy, breakbeat-sporting shuffle of UK house culture. On his full debut, the Parisian producer casts his net wider for inspiration, though the nostalgic feel and love of organ sounds remains. He begins by paying tribute to Jaydee classic 'Plastic Dreams' on 'Contact', before joining the dots between bleep-house and Chicago jack on 'Good Times' and shuffling his way through an alien-sounding, two-step-powered, acid-fired dancefloor soundscape on 'Secret Place (Raw Cut)'. Over on the B-side, 'Talking About' is a driving, low-slung chunk of mid-tempo house with nods towards fuzzy punk-funk, while 'Ici (A Paris)' sees him adding his own twist to the futurist sonics and weighty sub-bass of early LFO.

Review: Much of Klasse Wrecks co-founder Mr Ho's work is retro-futurist in tone, and his latest 12" which, turn of the 90s style, features different sonic explorations of the same core theme, is no different. On The EP-opening 'US Acid Breaks' mix, he doffs a cap to the house-tempo, TB-303 laden, dark room-ready breakbeat explorations of Frankie Knuckles and the Sonic Groove crew, while the bouncy 'Acid House' mix recycles the same acid lines and motifs atop smoother house beats and a booming bassline. Over on side B, he reaches for a rubbery but non-stop bassline on the chunky 'House Mix', before rounding things off with the self-explanatory 'Breaksapella' DJ tool.

Review: Johannes Kolter is Kolter and is also a producer who went under the name DJOKO. He's been busy this year with plenty of goodness dropping including an album and three EPs. Now comes hit sone, again on his home label Pilot. It is inventive stuff that functions well on the floor as it straddles the worlds of breaks, house and plenty more. 'Got High Again' is lively and dynamic with its squealing leads and dusty breaks, then 'Weirdo' layers up leftfield melodies and blurts of playful synth modulation. 'Prospekt' is a wild fusion of rock riffs and high-speed funky breaks and 'Duck Concert' closes with hardcore drum breaks and soulful synths next to mad scratchinG.

Review: The 39 Orbits pair of Nick Annies and Twink put out only two releases and they were back in 1993. In the years since though, they have become real digger's delights that now fetch high prices on the second-hand market if and when copies come up. But not anymore - Cosmic Soup has assembled this welcome 180g 12" which features tracks from those original records as well as one previously unreleased cut. 'Mercury' is pure dreamy post-rave prog house, as is the slightly more direct 'Outer Limits.' 'After Life' is high-speed house with lush synth work and 'Orbit's Theme' gets more deep and inwardly reflective.

Review: It's still hard to keep up with all of Burnski's many different labels, but we're not complaining. This one, Constant Black, mixes up things with a tech and minimal twist and next to do so is Daniel Akbar. 'What' soon wins you over with its kinetic and infectious drum programming and smart samples - a phased vocal and a twisted synth lead. 'Retreat' gets more physical - the drums bang with an old-school flavour and hint of tribalism. 'Listen' is a big fat tech roller with low slung bass and 'This One' rounds out with some brilliant drum, hits and brain-frying bass sounds. Pow pow, what a record.

It Really Matters To Me (3:33)
Review: Aaron aka Double A really serves up a double a-sided banger here for the Friday's Funky 45 label. It is a block-rocking beat with plenty of old-school samples and raw funk drumming that kick off on 'Old Skool Bounce'. The vocals are visceral call-and responses with a classic lead flute sound bring the joy. On the flip, things start with a super cool and breezy beat before a big vocal erupts and the prickly funk drums and rim shots elevate the track. It's another classic vocal top line that finishes it in style.

Review: The fifth entry on the M.A.D. Records series comes from Rakim Under, following up on their first appearance with the 'Lady J' re-fix on M.A.D. EDITS 003. Once again the label holds true to its dedication to the dancefloor by platforming these fast and furious hip-hop breakin' house jams, which roll from the dexterous drum funk of 'Blind' to the rolling, jazzy and Loom-bird toting 'If U Wanna'. The good-times vibe maintains on the B-side as a sweatier jack emerges around 'Te Siento Dentro', a faithful revision of a prototypical house joint, and then we're treated to the uptempo Latino rap throwdown of 'Vice'. If you want to set a party alight, every one of these tunes has all you need to get some heat generating out on the floor.

Review: Ildec shows plenty of class on this diverse new EP for Belgium's Altered Circuits. It has its roots in an early 90s electronic sound with plenty of inspiration from the artist's own compelling DJ sets. The Ibiza-based producer opens up with the atmospheric synths of 'El Principio' then gets gritty on tough tech loops on 'Modificacion' and explores a more funky broken beat vibe on 'El Break Del Dia'. 'El Break De La Noche' is cyborg funk with freaky effects and alien life forms and two closers get nice and bumpy with twisted bass and off-kilter rhythms.

In this case, they emerge from their lab with four finely tuned dancefloor destroyers that are steeped in a rich history of UK-centric sounds. 'Pandemic' is a wonky acid opener with plenty of warped designs and big breaks, then 'Aggressive Mantis Squad' brings more live drum breaks under crashing percussion and edgy synth terrors. 'Automatic Mouth' is a bass-driven and body-popping rhythm designed to get the floor popping before the all-out breakbeat assault that is 'International Sound System.'

We don't know anything about the artist at this point in time, but the sounds speak for themselves. Warm, wriggling synth lines with plenty of lysergic liquidity and nimble-footed beats stretching from 909 thrum to rolling breakbeat splendour. Everything's underpinned with an earthy trance vibe which melts into the current zeitgeist beautifully, leaving you with four smart, sophisticated club jams for the dreamiest of dancefloors. Just try dropping 'Tranze Buzz' without the whole room turning into a writhing mass of interpretive dance.

Laminar Flow also happens to be his first full-length, taking in a wide variety of moods and grooves along the way. From the evocative and acid-laced flow of 'Incubation Theory', the sci-fi electro of 'Oort Cloud' to the sublime ambient offering 'Dusk By The Bay' and the saucer-eyed sunrise breaks of 'Shifting Sands' - the result is a timeless piece of liquid-smooth sonic art.

Sorry You Had To Wait So Long (5:51)
Review: Johannes Kolter is Kolter, as well as being the artist formerly known as DJOKO, and here he follows up on his very recent Between Fragments album with a cheeky three tracker, once again for the Pilot label. This 12" kicks off with 'Techno Life', which ironically is a breaks/electro hybrid affair with all the hallmarks you could ask for from vocoder vocals to electronic cowbells. 'Can't Stop Rocking' borrows some serious chunks from a very famous electro record made by one of jazz music's legends - that description must surely narrows it down - and adds some tempo and the occasional vocal hook. Then we see proceedings drawn to a close by 'Sorry You Had To Wait So Long', every bit as lively as the other two, spaciously produced and peppered with the subtlest of electro flourishes. All round good work, you have to agree.

Review: Italian electronica wizard Paolo Mosca releases his debut LP, a mature and carefully crafted melting pot of influences from all over the electronic sphere. Dub, house, breaks, acid, ambient, progressive... you name it. The A-side houses techno sensibilities, building in intensity from the suspenseful 'Spiritual Birth' to the mechanical 'Connect Our Minds' with it's 90s-influenced industrial leanings. The B-side pivots to the club, with a deep house-techno to piano house combo breaker. Side C sees Mosca's production chops really showing with a dub twist, a Hideki Naganuma style vocal sample featuring on 'Wake Up', against a downtempo groove. The final side sees a grab bag of variety, from drum & bass to ambient with a three-track run that totally surprises. It's not an exaggeration to call 'Transition' and instant classic.

Review: With a run of knockout singles on XL reaching back to 2016, Tom and Ed Russell finally deliver the album we always knew they had in them. Overmono is a project which happily gorges on the best bits of rave culture and spits back out something fresh, universal and yet still headsy enough to keep the underground faithful happy. Good Lies builds on that promise in every way, threading in anthemic vocal hooks and massive emotive brushstrokes without losing that legit bite which has made them so enduringly popular. 'Is U' has an eye on the charts for sure, with plenty of big festival moments bagged along the way for their live shows and everyone else DJ sets. 'Walk Thru Water' hits a more melancholic note with St. Panther on vocals, but it's still masterfully crafted to bring out joyous escapism with gnarly synth flex on top. Something for everyone, then.

This Dynamics of Acid label is another one dedicated to the cause and here Jonathan Hipgrave under his Jonny3snares alias explores six different and equally sublime sounds that will make your brain dance as much as your body. There is an inward sense of reflection to the opener 'Signal Drive', a deep melancholy to 'Recovery' then squelchy hyperactive rhythms define 'Scramble.' Three flipside cuts again pair meaningful synths with lithe drum programming to make for a fantastically futuristic EP.

'The Horny' is a jungle workout with distorted textures and busted bass in constant motion, then 'Breakyweaky' flips the script and offers up some electro-tinged hip-hop funk with a dark and menacing mood. In Love With You (4:06)
If You Were Mine (6:28)
Hopes High Girl (4:53)
Vampire (4:40)
Review: Referring to the bugging of computer systems in the turn of the millennium, Year 2000 Problem utilises those distortion and disruptive ideas in their r&b infused jungle breakbeats. There is a feeling of deep emotion throughout, a type of emptiness and sorrow that only d&b and its subgenres could cultivate. One prime example is the vinyl-exclusive A-Side 'If You Were Mine' and its atmospheric synths leading up to harsh saws competing against the vocal line. The following track samples Kehlani's 'Nights Like This' against a bubbly, brassy and poppy rhythm, a dichotomy reflective of being alone in bed trying to stave off isolation with distraction. 'Vampire' is the most distinct of the bunch, featuring a quintessential jungle vocal and crisp percussion. It's jungle at its most minimal, a breakdown of the genre that feels like opening a time capsule to the proto days.

Review: Maara is a rather exclusive and mystic artist from Montreal who now unveils a debut album on Step Ball Chain. It's an adventurous record with 12 tracks across four sides of vinyl that range from emotive soundscapes to atmospheric drum and bass via mind-enhancing electronica. An already prolific producer, Maara shows there is no end to the different ideas she has inside her here. There is both beauty and darkness to be found along the way with lush pads, earth-shaking bass and melancholic mutterings and tender whispers from her own mouth all adding colour.

Review: One half of Masters At Work, Kenny Dope aka Mad Rackett has worked in every musical field from jungle to big beat to soul and funk remixes, but the latter alias has seen all but four or so releases, and has usually tended towards the more soulful end of the sonic batting cage. 'UFO' and 'B-Boy Strut' are two of the legends' latest, with both tracks on this retroistic 7" working in mad whammy breakbeats and deft song structures, as ever.

Review: Dance Music From Planet Earth is a new sub-label from Ransom Note that kicks off with a heritage compilation, Dream The Dream. It looks back in great detail at UK Techno, House and Breakbeat 1990-1994 with Richard Sen as the man in control. He was a DJ back in those days, playing the most epic raves around Europe and taking some of the photos which now form the artwork for this collection. His obsessive record collecting from those days is reflected here across a series of sometimes obscure but always brilliant UK tunes for the worlds of ambient, techno, tribal house, breakbeat and early trance.

Horny Breakdancers (5:26)
Review: Well this one is fun. And fun, just about, in a good way, rather than stupid silly un-cool and uncouth fun. Kolter's Breakarama EP kicks off with the title track which makes use of the melodic motif from TV's much loved animation Futurama. It is sure to get some super reactions in the club with its playfulness and charm. 'Ghost In The Breaks' is more serious, with a slick and futuristic feeling breaks vibe then 'Get Out James!' is another laugh that makes use of the iconic riff from James Bond over some sleazy and dark UKG. 'Horny Breakdancers' is an airy, uplifting one to close.

King Of Sorrow (6:26)
Review: Whoever it is behind the Lode project, they're clearly having some fun with these low-key edits for the minimal tech house crowd. On this second instalment, they're taking on some big source material and knowing exactly how to tease big drops without losing the understated elegance of the genre. As such, you can expect 'Tt' to become an essential fixture for hazy, emotionally charged after hours sets, while 'Black Messiah' has a snappy electro rhythm to hook in the floor. 'Lmbyf' takes things deeper with another of those big vocals and 'King Of Sorrow' keeps things lighter and funkier, but you'll no doubt have fun spotting the sound sources.

Drifting (6:02)
Review: To date, Kim Cosmk has generally done her own thing - self-releasing a string of digital-only singles and albums which variously mix and mangle elements of electro, IDM, techno and dubstep. Here she pops up on an established label - Ralph Lawson's 2020 Vision to be exact - for the very first time. First, she whips up a frenzy courtesy of the fuzzy and aggressive riffs of techno roller 'Night Flight', complete with creepy chords and foreboding motifs. She then delivers raw, heavy, industrial-fired electro on 'Ore', whilst warped dubstep and electro are brilliantly mixed on 'Nocturnal'. To round things up nicely, 'Drifting' is a partial vocal number built around a wobbling dubstep bass with punchy electro drums and twinkling pianos.

Toxic Funk Vol 6

Fire (2:54)
Reasons (2:43)
Review: Following fine, party-starting contributions from Badboe, Tom Showtime, Prosper, Gramophone Soul and Second Hand Audio, Breakbeat Paradise has handed a Toxic Funk debut to Greek scene stalwarts Funkin' Basstards. The pair's brand of energy-packed, fattened-up funk is a perfect fit for the series. They deliver two reworks, both of which are beefed-up, floor-ready takes on old funk and soul tunes. On the A-side you'll find the rolling, up-tempo hedonism of 'Fire' - all bustling breaks, diva vocals, rising horns and hard guitars - while the flip boasts 'Reasons', a tidy, head-nodding take on what sounds like a twangy, Southern Soul gem from the 1960s. Their take combines elements of their source material as well as a few brand-new samples, cuts and musical elements.
