Your Shed's Too Big (5:06)
Review: Boofy on System; we're surprised this hasn't happened sooner... But the wait has been worth it as we've got two powerful lessons in suspense, tension and low end drama. "Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place" sets the admonishing tone. Paranoid, foreboding and stripped back to the bare elements, it's the perfect pace setter. Flip for another excellently titled track as "Your Shed's Too Big" flips the focus on the rolling steppy percussion and wandering pipe arpeggio that skitters around the cut like a spider on ice. Get shedded.

Review: Black Acre has always been a home-from-home for Sheffield artist Commodo. He's back on the label now with more of his inter-genre explorations. This time out he brings grime, bass and 90s punk guitar together into something utterly fresh. Think of Fugazi and Mudhoney as reference options and you will be in the right ballpark, but all with this producer's signature sonic structure and hefty bottom ends. These are 140 instrumentals with their own dark energy and they bring a truly different vibe to the dubstep template.

Review: The now legendary electronic music duo Chase & Status dropped their debut album More Than A Lot back in October 2008. It was a big success from the off and ended up hitting number 49 on the UK Albums Chart. It was re-issued again two years later with a bonus track and now it gets pressed up on pink marble wax. It is a great reminder of where this now stadium-filling live act has come from with standouts such as the collaboration with rapper Kano on 'Against All Odds' and single 'Pieces' featuring vocals from rapper Plan B.

Review: Over the years, Modeselektor have forged a reputation as fearless innovators, neatly sidestepping genres and frequently confounding critics. Given their tireless touring schedule and the fact they run two prolific labels it's perhaps no surprise that it's been some four years since the last full-length Modeselektor album. Monkeytown flits effortlessly between skittish 140 BPM bass music, clandestine electronica, sludgy hip-hop and even warehouse-flavoured tropical rhythms (see "German Clap"). There are some real standouts, including a dreamy, slo-mo pop outing with PVT, two collaborations with Thom Yorke and a droning Anti-Pop Consortium hook-up. Must-check.

Review: Mancunian Walton heads to Munich label Ilian Tape for anther of his cutting edge EPs. No stranger to esteemed labels like Hyperdub and Techtonic, this soundsmith once again draws on ambient, techno, bass and IDM across six immersive and cinematic tracks. The first two are largely wide open, cavernous, ambient affairs in which to allow your mind to wander. The inventive rhythms and powerful drums then arrive on 'Dread II' and remain throughout the skittish synth energy of 'Rewind Riddim' and automated factory floor sounds of 'Overload Destruction.' 'Unknown Territories' ends on a more far gazing vibe with pensive pads over scattered kicks.

Review: AJ Tracey famously announced the release of his sophomore set, Flu Game, with a fake press conference in which he took on the role of a star basketball player. There's a reason for that - Tracey claims to have drawn influence from the story of Michael Jordan and his legendary Chicago Bulls side of the 1990s - though some reviewers have questioned the relevance of the concept to the album itself. Putting that to one side, Flu Game is a very good album indeed: a contender for the grime album of the year with Tracey spitting thoughtful and hard-hitting rhymes atop punchy grime beats and hot-stepping UK garage grooves. To our ears it's a step up from his self-titled 2019 debut album and in time will be regarded as a genuine grime classic.

Undeadman (Mordant Music remix)
Review: Not content with dropping the delirious "Deadman", Sam Shackleton offers up another must-have release in the shape of this expansive double pack. Lead cut "Fireworks" is classic Shackleton - a skittering dubstep/dub techno fusion that makes delicious use of echo-laden congas, foreboding noises and distant, Middle Eastern melodies. It's utterly spellbinding. T++ remixes, delivering a ricocheting dub take. On the second disc, Shackleton reveals "Undeadman", a kind of bizzaro universe mix of "Deadman". It's pleasingly creepy, working odd samples and strange found sound around a solid, dancefloor-friendly rhythm. Flip for an excellent remix from Mordant Music, which makes brilliant use of a live dub bassline.

Review: Zomby returns to Hyperdub with his first album in three years, trailed in high profile fashion by that Burial collaboration "Sweetz." That particular tune is one of Ultra's headline attractions, alongside eyebrow-raising collaborations with Darkstar, Banshee and Rezzett. What really impresses, though, is the skewed, left-of-centre nature of the mask-wearing producer's heavy, post-grime rhythms, sparse but sparkling synth work, and the breathlessly cut-up R&B vocals dotted throughout the set. Interestingly, there are subtle nods towards new wave synth-pop, ghetto-tech, spacey ambient and alien IDM, making Ultra Zomby's most intriguing and consistently on-point album to date.

Review: Aside from having a stellar catalogue of releases that span from labels like Reflex to Hyperdub, Kevin Martin's The Bug project has been a foundational pillar of the UK dubstep and bass scene. if there has always been one producer to take things one step further and challenge the dance with each new tune, it's most certainly this producer. No wonder he's been releasing music on Ninja Tune for ages, and that he's back on the label now with this new EP. "Box" features revered grime MC D Double E on the mic, and the collaboration between the two results in utter carnage, a visceral grime banger backed by The Bug's twisted concoctions of beats and bass; check the instrumental, too. "Iceman" is a similar sort of curbside killer, this time with Riko Dan on the vocals, and followed by that gnarly instrumental cut...oof!

Review: Jamie Vex'd returns to his Kuedo project after several years working both underground and commercial sector as an engineer, sound designer and composer. His return couldn't have happened soon enough. "Slow Knife" is anchored by a strong sense of score-like sci-fi throughout as tracks such as the spectrum creeping alien trains of "Slow Knife" and the smouldering twangs and pensive vibrations of "Love Theme" create a dense, sense-blurring narrative. Elsewhere Jamie finds time to escape into raw futuristic soul ("In Your Sleep"), wry broken beat dancefloor procession ("Floating Forest") and overwhelmingly immersive sound design ("Broken Fox") This is just the tip of a sonic iceberg that will take many exciting listens to get acquainted with.

Review: JEB1 is an inimitable producer who brings his distinctive beats to Hi Tek Sounds with this tidy new single. "Guyana" has a real sombreness in the lead synth that rings out of stuttering drums. There are some soothing vocal sounds, too, but the dread of the bass and tension of the perc do little to assuage the feelings of uncertainly. East Man steps up for the remix on the B side. His version pops with tin pot percussion and growling bass that is at times smooth, at others gritty. It closes out a tight two tracker that packs a real punch.

Review: Instra:mental's Nonplus imprint are set to unleash US based producer ASC's debut album, Nothing Is Certain next month but first deliver a three track taster of this highly anticipated LP. "Phobos" sets industrial noises and sparse, dramatic tones as its backdrop but entwines electronic grooves and micro samples over the top to create his unusual but wholly captivating sound. "Oort Cloud" drops out into some cosmic, downtempo atmospheres of weightless space before "Matter of Time" explores wind-like sounds and melodies, deep oceans of bass and his intriguing use of Oriental sounding percussion. Once listen to this will have you holding your breath for July's LP.

Vacuum States
Review: Having announced his new Jon Convex endeavour with two slices of formidable futurism for Martyn's 3024 imprint, Damon Kirkham returns to the familiarity of Non Plus with a double clutch of equally essential productions. Fans of cult TV might recognise the snatch of Badalamenti strings that announce "Radar" in such ominous fashion, though it's they way this element is weaved amidst ever groaning insect like bass and murderous strains of dystopian acid that truly impresses. And of course the brittle click clack of drums that always threatens to smash to pieces. In contrast, "Vacuum States" offers a more optimistic slant on the sci fi electro poise, gradually letting loose a succession of kaleidoscopic synth flutters over the stripped down kick thrust and glooping bass.

It shows the Bristolian at his no holds barred, unyielding best U militant basslines, skittering tribal percussion and ethereal moans all combine for a tear out that stands above the pretenders. Flip over for a remix from fellow dubstep veteran Darqwan, who throws a cheeky vocal sample on top for added hands-up effect.

Dare Me
White Noise
Review: Just when you thought you had Al Bleek and Damon Drama's Non Plus sorted, they go and make a sharp diversion and take you somewhere completely different. The destination? LOL. And no, that's not a joke. A teaser for their forthcoming album Me Me, the tracklist reads a little like an Alice In Wonderland list of instructions or perhaps a seductive dance; "Squeeze Me" kicks off with sinuous R&B style vocals and enticing synths with a slow, lolhloping half step rhythm, which inevitably drags you in deep like a tidal current of sound, while "Face Me" follows a languid 4/4 drum pattern drenched in late night synths. "Dare Me", up next, mirrors the sonic palette with shimmering, spaced out atmospherics and more glorious, syrup sweet lyrics. Visceral and rather enthralling, it bears the hallmarks of nocturnal dance music with throbbing b-line and infectious, enveloping synth-work, but with an underlying pop/R&B sensibility that shines through the darkness. Crackly, droning atmospherics sit beneath ice cold bleeps on finale "White Noise". A far cry from much of the recent Non Plus output for sure, but a remarkable release nonetheless which we urge you to get your teeth into.

The result are four favourites all given special new twists as Ourman, Roklem, Substrada and WZ all go in on their own work. Review: Portugal's 3WA remains a key voice in the low end spectrum thanks to big tunes on Boka, Crucial Recordings, Foundation Audio and Earth & Stone. The master of the big drop and all consuming bass is now snapped up by Subaltern for three more of his menacing workouts. 'Master Of Finances' demands you to revel in the lurching drum work and cavernous bass. 'Slimy' is even more poised and heavy, with steel plated hits and sci-fi twitches making for a cinematic soundscape. Closing out the EP is 'Balaclava,' a wonky and wobbling affair with oodles of reverb, mysterious leads and of course a weighty underside.

Stark staccato strings, booming bass and spacious beats; this is pure Bristol Psycho business and it's backed by another west country horror Boofy on the remix. Chopping up the original within an inch of its life, he adds a little ghetto-twist in the beats for added murderation. Heavy.

The 'Selecta' EP comes three years after his one and only other record and kicks off with the title track, a menacing low-slung buzzer. The drums make heavy rotations beneath a synth one that zips about with future energy. 'Immortal' then layers up another fat low-end oscillation and crisp hits while 'Peace' has a more prickly percussive vibe and suspensory feel topped with grime vocals. Three sound systems winners, for sure.

When It's Gone
Review: There was much talk ahead of the release of Darkstar's debut album as to whether the London based outfit could live up to the promise of their stunning breakthrough single "Aidy's Girl Is A Computer" on Hyperdub in 2009. The answer, in short, is yes. In the course of the past 12 months Aiden Whalley and James Young have morphed from a production team into a band, adding vocalist James Buttery along the way, and North, the fruits of their labour, is a fragile, delicate and beautiful record. Tracks like "Gold" and ""Dear Heartbeat"" showcase an 80s synth pop sensibility, forming the backbone of an album that is steeped in worry and melancholia. Buttery's vocal talents add an extra layer of depth to the music, particularly on the poignant, piano driven opening and closing track "In The Wings" and "When It's Gone". There is much to explore on North, which will go down as one of 2010's most affecting electronic albums.

Review: Ploughing into the club with pure murkery and venom, Italian crew Butu Yard lay down a 150 piece on Matera-based label. Sitting somewhere between Biome and Strategy, it's thick, oily, industrial strength badness that's primed for system demolition as 2022 progresses and things open up more. Amplified on the B by a turbo-charged jungle twist from Sativa Club where the powerful vocal and heavy bass textures are maintained beneath some rampant 160 breaks work.

Review: Finally! Grove's exceptional debut EP from last year sees the vinyl light of day. Sitting somewhere between breaks, drum & bass, hip-hop and IDM, their powerful delivery and black, queer perspective fires up an incredible cauldron that's visceral, physical and loaded with positivity. Highlights range from the subverted jungle head-twister 'F-I-U' to the bulldozer techno stepper 'Intent' with all kinds of flavours in between including a collab with Griz-O, a remix from Ur Worst Nightmare and exceptional life truths like 'Fuck Ur Landlord' and 'Ur Boyfriend's Whack'. Get sticky.

Review: Ghett's Conflict Of Interest album late last year was one of grime's finest. It now makes its arrival on wax and still hits hard. There are plenty of hugely evocative and biographical stories in this record that make it all the more real and impactful, from tales of street life to memories of his childhood to worries about being a parent. Those many different sides to Ghett's personality are reflected by the artwork which shows him at different ages all at once. The dark production makes for long and shadowy moods but guest spots from the likes of Emile Sande and Ed Sheehan bring a lighter soul sound that will have you singing along.

Review: Zha brings together element of dubstep, grime and trap on his latest 12" for the Naan crew. It is his first outing of the year following solid slabs of wax for the likes of White Peach and this label dating back to 2015. This one kicks off with 'Spice,' which has bass tones pinging about the mix with big hits, snatched vocal yelps and dusty drums all keeping you on your toes. 'Grief' is darker and dirtier thanks to the filthy great oscillation that rips up the swaggering rhythm and 'Harm' gets deep on some pensive pads and intoxicating melodic sounds. 'Two Rumours' closes down with sub so warm and cuddly it's like being hugged by a new duvet.
