Review: Ibiza legend and all round well respected industry man Chris Coco is back with more of his seaside sounds. This time his Mediterranean magic is cast over 'La Guitarra' which as the title hints has Flamenco style acoustics with tropical house drums and heartfelt synths. There is a pair backed and delicious dub also, and then modern disco don Rune Lindbaek comes through with a mesmeric take that is laidback and lush in its design. Last of all is Daniel Braca with a Deep In Brooklyn remix thing brings some fine Latin house styles.

Love Story (Vs Finally) (Paul Woolford 2023 extended mix) (5:43)
Love Story (7:52)
Review: 'Love Story' is one of the most classic tunes in all of house music. It was written by Layo & Buschwaka who heard the original 'Finally' by Kings of Tomorrow and wanted to tweak it to their own ends so mashed it up with further samples from Dave, Nina Simone and Tati Quebra-Barraco. It's a rousing, heartwarming dancefloor trip of the highest order and who better to remix it than the always on fire Paul Woolford. His extended 2023 edit brings all the best bits to the fore and ensures we will be hearing this one all summer long. No complaints here.

Review: Larry Heard once said that he stumped upon his trademark dusty deep house sound rather by mistake - he was simply trying to recreate the instrumental disco of his childhood on the limited machinery he had available at the time. Either way, he went on to explore and exploit its most spiritual and spine-tinging aspects across a faultless discography that often looks to the cosmos for inspiration. That is true of this second volume of his Around The Sun album on his own Alleviated Records. It's another fine showcase of Chicago house, deep house, jazz and r&b that is utterly timeless.

Review: Long-serving Japanese nu-jazz collective Kyoto Jazz Massive is back in focus again after a cool outing featuring Roy Ayers back in February. This time they're on Mukatsuku with this limited edition and hand numbered 7" featuring a pair of new edits of their 'Get It Together' tune Featuring Vanessa Freeman. The first is from Yoshi and is a glorious bit of big disco energy with diva vocals and sumptuous chord stabs. The second is an instrumental with backing vocals which then gets edited by Robin Lee & Nik Weston into something a little more free, loose and cosmic.

Doing Our Own Thing (Dimitri From Paris remix part 2) (4:57)
Review: Monsieur Dimitri from Paris works his magic on Casbah 73's organic disco grooves with a remix treatment that surpasses all expectations. Casbah's original track may sound like a band-recorded take with added production sheen, but it's actually a deceptively well-made track recorded by a talented solo artist. Dimitri brings added wompy disco-house heat to the track in two parts, with the first part focusing on the more bangerific elements of the original, and the B (part two) stripping things back to focus on the more minimal, solo dubby parts.

Review: We're told that the Hot Pot label has been specially resurrected to put out these jams from the one and only former Slum Village DJ, Mahogany Music artist, hip-hop head and house don that is Dez Andres. They are some of the edits and reworks he has been playing out on the circuit in his Detroit hometown and they get pressed up nice and loud here on fresh wax. First up he reworks a stone-cold classic with a distinctive Latin house twang while on the flip, his signature boom-bap drum work defines another killer groove. Super stuff as ever from the man.

Change This Pain For Ecstasy (extended version)
Moto
Review: Rex The Dog has been a Kompakt artist seemingly forever but this is actually his first new music on the Cologne powerhouse in three years. He heads off on a slow-burning disco stomper that has him tweaking as much magnificence as possible out of his modular synth setup. 'Change This Pain For Ecstasy' is stripped back and pulses with energy as chords sweep through the skies and a delirious voice pleads for you to "take away my sorrow and this pain". On the flip is 'Moto' which builds from subtle vibrations to become a hefty techno cut with wild and erupting tones and crackling, corroding sounds all filling the airwaves.

He is back now and in top-notch form with a new 7" for At Home Sound in Japan. Review: Leftifled's Leftism remains one of the great dance music albums of all time. It came back in the 90s when no one was making full lengths that really made the most of the format: This is not a collection of club tracks but a musical voyage through dub, techno, bass and house that is meticulously designed and all-consuming once you turn it up nice and loud. In fact, it is best enjoyed in one sitting rather than in the modern playlist fashion with tracks broken up because that way the pressure is built and released, the moods ebb and flow and the music really makes an indelible impact.

He pulls off the trick again here with a new 12" on his own label that sinks you into dusty, well-swung and stripped-back lo-fi drums and glorious melodies right off the bat with 'Sunsplash Vibes'. Review: Plastik People boss Mark Cotterell keeps up the good form he sowed in 2022 with his first EP of 2023. It comes on Rhythm Vibe and features two more of his well-designed and well-swung garage-house groovers. 'Take You For A Ride' has choppy drums and hits with fresh piano stabs and soulful vocals and 'Move To The Groove' then gets a little deeper but with similar ingredients. A Ross Couch mix takes it into more airy and floaty territory while Mike Millrain's mix of 'Take You For A Ride' brings the 90s vibes.

He opens up with 'Do You Wanna Dance' which has vocals pacing about the mix and old school acid bass twangs under raw house drums. Meltdown (6:28)
Lady Science (Tek mix) (5:52)
Review: As Soul Capsule, Baby Ford and Thomas Melchior made some of minimal techno's most accomplished records. It has been many years since they stopped turning out new material - sadly - but their archive tracks are still in hot demand and undeniably relevant. While 1999's 'Lady Science' might be their most famous offering, this EP from 2001 on Aspect Music is no less vital and it will currently cost you well over L250 on second-hand markets. It is Ford's Trelik label who reissues it here in all its glory: the entirety of the a-side is taken up with 'Law Of Grace,' a delightfully deep and breezy minimal dub house roller with pensive chords draped over the frictionless drums. 'Meltdown' has a more experimental feel with brushed metal drums beneath a wordless vocal musing. The cult 'Lady Science' (Tek Mix) is also inched with the whole package being remastered by D&M to make this one utterly essential.

Review: The unstoppable Eastenderz label run by East End Dubs is now well over 50 releases deep yet still serves up music that makes a real impact when it arrives. Max Dean is behind this latest fresh fusion of house, dub and tech with 'Can't Slow Down' opening up on a way of subtly uplifting synths and with throwback vocal samples adding some good time magic. 'Focus' is more bubbly and bouncy, with rich and glowing melodic daubs looping over a slick groove. 'Uppy' is a third and final buffed up tech cut with rasping bass and plenty of colourful synths all bringing it to life.

Double Dee - "Found Love" (feat Dany - Dimitri From Paris remix edit) (3:27)
Jestofunk - "Say It Again" (Micky More & Andy Tee remix edit) (4:29)
Review: For the latest instalment of the label's occasional seven-inch series, Groove Culture has decided to offer up fresh takes on classic Italian house hits. On side A, the legendary Dimitri From Paris gets his mitts on Double Dee's 1990 number 'Found Love', re-imagining it as a colourful blend of rubbery nu-disco and hands-in-the-air piano house that rightly places Dany's recognisable lead vocal front and centre. Flip for label chiefs' Micky More and Andy Tee's take on Jestofunk's 1993 classic 'Say It Again'. Like much of their work, the Italian duo's translation blurs the boundaries between funk-fuelled house and revivalist disco, with flanged, occasionally bluesy guitars, strung-out synth solos and energy-packed sax lines catching the ear.

Review: Z Lovecraft AKA Rhythm Section International's Mali Baden-Powell, offers up four originals on the Utopia Club Tracks label that showcase the disco/house end of his varied output. 'Exotic Passage' coasts along serenely with gently slapped bongos and warm electric piano, definitely a weapon to have in one's warm up arsenal. 'Release (The Tension)' ups the heat a little with a busier bassline, filters and disco licks, before B-side opener 'Lust In Denial' comes with more jazz-slanted piano riffs and 'People Get Too Deep' closes proceedings with the most spacious and dubby arrangement of the quartet. Musically refreshing and understated but lively enough to move feet onto dancefloors, this is the business.

Review: Heko Records have perfected the craft of "dreamatic" house music, a formula that has nestled itself firmly in the collective psyche of dance music-makers ever since Dreamatic released the track 'Audio Trip'. Here they welcome Innershades to the fore for a new EP that refreshes the style for the present, with heaters like 'Summer Love' seeming to take direct inspiration from the aforementioned track, while adding a modern flair. Things slowly get more bloopy and hard, as 'Mutant' squelches and hat-scratches away against a bed of yet more pads, while '909 Voices' similarly lulls us into a hypnotic state with a slow tapering-off into ravier territories.

This one is from Rasheeda Ali, a new name that might be familiar to anyone who heard Kai's 'Sheed's Move' tune from a previous EP. She has also been on stage with none other than Jeff Mills and here her flute skills come to the fore with production from Kai. Cosmic Paradise (Larry Heard Underground remix) (8:12)
Warriors Dance (Ron Trent remix) (9:38)
Review: Given that Nick Anthony Simoncino's take on house has always been nostalgic and retro-futurist in nature, frequently paying tribute to the '80s and '90s work of key American producers, it seems fitting that his latest 12" boasts rubs of catalogue tracks from two deep house icons, Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Heard steps up first with a version of 'Cosmic Paradise' that peppers a tactile, hardware-driven groove with sparkling, freestyle/Italo-disco style synth riffs and plenty of the Chicagoan's fluid piano motifs. Trent delivers his interpretation of 'Warriors Dance', offering a Latin-tinged drum machine rhythm, spacey chords for days, attractive synth sounds aplenty and echoing, dubbed-out electronics. Both reworks are, as you'd expect from such giants of deep house, utterly gorgeous.

But if you need to know more, on this 12" for Z Records he's taking on the Russian band Leonid & Friends and their cover of 'Street Player' by Chicago. Review: Those with even a basic knowledge of Italian dance music will have come across Alex Neri productions before; during the 1990s, he recorded loads of house (and less frequently, techno), under a wide variety of aliases. In 1991, he donned the Axe Corner alias (alongside studio buddies Adriana Dodici, Marco Baroni and Pietro Peretti) and delivered Tortuga, an EP of moody blends of house and techno that now sound surprisingly far-sighted. A-sides 'OUT-SLD' and 'IN-SLD' are both forthright but funky techno outings whose bleeping lead lines and thickset grooves pay tribute to the then-massive bleep & bass sound (albeit without the colossal sub-bass and dub reggae influences that style was famous for), while flip-side cuts 'BAD-SLD' and 'SLD-Effects' deliver tougher, late-night takes on the organ-rich Italo-house sound.

Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come (part 2)
Review: Eight years ago, Super Weird Substance unveiled a cover of Bessie Banks' classic 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' - a hybrid nu-disco/classic soul interpretation that was credited to The Reynolds (twin sisters according to press releases circulated at the time), but produced and mixed by Greg Wilson and regular studio buddy Peza. This timely reissue marks the first time the track has appeared on a 45. Just like many classic soul sevens, it features 'Part 1' and 'Part 2' versions, which seem to be edits of the near nine-minute 'club mix' that appeared on the original 12" release. Both are great, with the Reynolds' gorgeous vocals being joined by rubbery synth-bass, simmering synth-strings, tasteful synth-horns and unfussy, floor-friendly drums.

The Icelandic producer has long been turning out icy and atmospheric rollers for the heads and here he works alongside a fresh name, Quantal, who is sure to go on to big things. Here they land on Thule Records, a legendary label in its own right with roots going back to 1995. They kick off with the textured dub of 'WQ1' which has glitchy sounds paying over the rolling drums. 'WQ2' is much more smooth and streamlined, with an underwater current that sweeps you off your feet, then 'WQ3' leans into the wind with hypnotic techno drums and vamping chords that melt the mind. Last of all comes 'WQ4', a timeless dub with infinite horizons and the most frictionless drum loops.

Review: Politics Of Dancing once again gets our vote here with some balmy deep house propositions from the eponymous production team working alongside French stylist Djebali. 'Close To Gate' layers balmy pads and smeared chords over punchy and dynamic drums with plenty of cosmic effects up top. There is a little more urgency to 'Soul Brothers' which skates and skips along nicely beneath shimmering vocals sounds and wispy melodies. 'Simple Minds' brings more physical drum work and infectious finger clicks while the Franco Cinelli remix gets things on more of a breezy and rolling tip. A useful, heartwarming EP of modern deep house music.

Review: Beyonce's last album was widely heralded as a triumph by all. It found her diving into house music and working with scene stalwarts like Luke Solomon and Honey Dijon. It won a Grammy for its efforts. Now, even though plenty of the originals were ready to work a club dancefloor, we get treated to some remixes. They all focus on the standout single 'Break My Soul' and we get funky and soulful stuff from Terry Hunter, broken beat from Will I Am, house thumps from Honey Dijon, and filter-heavy stuff from The Queens. Add in the Nita Aviance club mix and the original version and you have a useful package indeed.

Review: If anything, the hugely prolific Motor City mainstay that is Omar S seems to be getting even more prolific as time goes on. His vast catalogue grows once more here with Fun House, which finds Alister Fawnwoda exploring a wide range of dance music styles alongside guests such as FXHE regular John F.M., plus Mitchell Yoshida, Super Cool Wired, Troi Alexis, Tyesha Blount and more, with all the production, lyrics and mixing taken care of by Omar S himself. The tracks range from seductive deep house to edgy mechanical techno, dubbed out downbeat joints and smooth electronic Detroit soul. It is yet another crucial chapter in the FXHE and Omar S story.

Review: Soulful fusionists The Dangerfeel Newbies are an interesting proposition. Certainly, the Atlanta-based trio has made an impression on NDATL Muzik boss Kai Alice, who's decided to release a trio of his own interpretations of Hariet album highlight "What Am I Here For". He begins by delivering a classic soulful house interpretation, placing the original's superb vocal and twinkling jazz pianos right at the heart of the action. Those superb piano lines come to the fore on his Piano Instrumental, before the Late Night Mix sees Alice sauntering off on a hazy, duvet-warm deep house tip. Best of all, though, is the bonus remix of "Swingin' With The New Jacks", a fizzing, rolling deep house groover replete with vibraphone solos and battling jazz horns.

Review: The most luxurious of re-edits comes rolling round once again, with the sixth volume in Los Angeles-based disco stu LUXXURY's rework series. From the pumping funky house anthem 'Let The Disco Play' on the A-side, to the slo-mo boogie-down vibes of 'Last Night' (also on the A), to dancefloor heaters over on the flip such as the low slung Afro influence of 'Nancy' and the deep down and dirty 'Every 1' with its well famous riff - they're all re-tweaked for the modern dancefloor.

50th Release Special
Giman & Chic Ago - "The Job"
Magnolia - "Never Give Up On Love" (feat Venessa Jackson)
Luke Delite - "Give Me Your Love" (feat Michelle Weeks)
Generoco - "In The Music" (feat Karmina Dai - Hotmood remix)
Foot Loose - "Nah That's Ross Kemp"
Sean Den - "Ain't No Love"
Review: To mark the label's 50th release, the Disco Express imprint has put together a six-track missive packed to the rafters with high-grade disco club cuts. Side A begins with the bouncy, low-slung disco-funk-goes-disco-house heaviness of Giman & Chic Ago's edit-not-edit gem 'The Job', before Vanessa Jackson handles lead vocals on Magnolia's 21st century disco sing-along 'Never Give Up On Love' and the legendary Michelle Weeks performs the same role on Luke Delite's celebratory and nostalgic, Salsoul-esque 'Give Me Your Love'. The fun continues on the flip, where Hotmood blurs the boundaries between chunky deep house and nu-disco on a fine revision of Generoco's 'In The Music', Foot Loose serves up the sun-splashed joy of 'Nah That's Ross Kemp', and Sean Den stomps his way through the heavy disco-house pressure of 'Ain't No Love'.

Review: HandsonWax dropped a great first EP and has kept up the quality with a second and now third 12". It is label head or heads HandsonWax who are at the buttons again for this one which opens with some full-on jazz house that comes with busy chords and classic vocal samples. 'Do You Play Baseball?' is more ageless house music that is well-versed in the classics but with plenty of fresh musicality and two more equally impactful yet tasteful jams appear on the B-side, with the intense and steamy 'Jack's Club Control' our pick of a good bunch.

Everybody Be Somebody (Steve Disco Newsome Disco dub) (5:11)
Review: High Fashion brings some big summer house action here with Steve Disco Newsome's two mixes of that stone cold classic 'Everybody Be Somebody' by Ruffneck Feat Yavahn. The opener is solid, mid-tempo house with vast drums and raw hits all topped off by the iconic vocal. It's sweaty and high impact, make no mistake about it. On the flip, the Disco Dub is packed with raw filters, lots of frazzled loops and marching drums to get the floor into a real frenzy. Both tunes bang, frankly.

Untitled AA2 Aka The Journey (5:42)
Review: The smooth and seductive sounds of Pulp Corn come at us for another fine EP here from the in house production team. As ever the influences are broad with 'Tarik 1' featuring a soul vocal and some swooning strings that bring an almost Eagles-style vibe to the rolling house drums and elastic bass. It's a good time sound for winning over any crowd in loved-up settings. On the flip, 'Track 2' is led by a sax taking on an iconic melody from the 'Sunny' tune and allowing it to drift of bustling and bristling funky house beats. Two characterful cuts with lots to like.

The Layabouts - "Colours Of Love" (feat Portia Monique - The Layabouts vocal mix) (7:31)
Imaani - "Found My Light" (Atjazz remix) (6:15)
Review: Reel People Music continues to dig into its vast back catalogue and producer sampler EPs containing some of the imprint's most sought-after (and often previously digital-only) tracks. Fittingly, label founders Reel People kick things off via a lusciously warm, percussively punchy Fouk remix of Speech hook-up 'I Never Knew', which giddily blurs the boundaries between deep house and hip-house, before Turbojazz and Sean McCabe add a subtle broken beat swing to their inspired deep house fix of Lydia Hyrell's sumptuous cover of r&b classic 'Heard It All Before'. Elsewhere, the Layabouts deliver a vocal remix of their own jazz-funk-flecked summer house classic 'Colours of Love', while the mighty Atjazz doffs a cap to friend Osunlade on his superb rework of Imaani's 'Found My Light'.

The Answer (Session Victim remix) (6:23)
Review: A regular to the Shall Not Fade output, Columbian producer Felipe Gordon returns for a collaborative EP with Belgian artist, Krewcial, for a deep dive into their shared sonic world. An ode to their shared love of cycling, this EP traverses many textures and terrains, ascending into moments of brightness and descending into deep atmospheres. The first track, '1972', kicks off with an outer casing of flecked percussion, before the introduction of a driving, hill-climbing bass line. Track number two, 'Dying', features rousing choir vocals, bringing a gospel-sensibility to the firmly funk-tied bass line. On the B-side, 'Answer' has a careening melody with hints of nostalgia, side-stepping between satisfyingly clean kick drums and brusque snares. The flip also features a remix by Session Victim - a beautifully floaty reimagining of the more grounded original. A highly multifaceted release and a strong addition to Shall No Fade's already gleaming catalogue.

Review: Of all DJ duos currently operating in British dance music, Belfast boys Bicep might be the hardest to pin down (Optimo aside, of course). Certainly, this debut album is not easy to pigeonhole, though it is an enjoyably cohesive listen. This is largely down to two factors; the frequent use of deliciously colorful and loved-up synthesizer parts, and the duo's innate ability to utilize beats tailor-made for dancefloor devastation. So while keen dancefloor historians may notice sly (and not so subtle) nods to '89 rave, U.S house and garage, Italo-disco, late '90s progressive house, jungle and early British hardcore, the album never sounds anything less than a fine set of Bicep tracks. Expect it to be one of the biggest albums of the year.

Starry Night (6:40)
Han Pan (6:43)
Review: Given her runaway success in recent years, it was almost inevitable that Peggy Gou would launch her own record label sooner or later. Wisely, she's chosen to kickstart said imprint - the freshly minted Gudu Records - with her first EP of fresh material for over 12 months. A-side "Starry Night" is an unashamedly positive and life-affirming affair, with Gou placing bouncy piano riffs, sultry South Korean and English vocals and Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style synth-bass atop a snappy, late '80s style house rhythm. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to the equally loved-up "Han Pan", where Gou's attractive vocals once again catch the ear alongside heavy analogue bass, chiming synth lines and Kwaito influenced drums.

Review: D3 Elements is an always cultured deep house label and so it is no surprise to find the great US producer Alton Miller has been recruited for a new EP. He has a richly musical sound and roots that go back decades, and it shows: 'Clone' is the sort of stylish backroom house that layers diffuse chords with dusty drums and cannot fail to warm the heart. 'All Of It' explores more broken and Afro-tinged drum patterns with golden Rhodes chords and astral leads. This top trio is completed with the funky kick patterns and perfect soulful vocals of 'Waitin 4 You'. Detroit mainstay Kevin Reynolds remixes it into a hypnotic Motor City roller.
