I'll Be Around
I'll Be Around (3:49)
I'll Be Around (dub vocal) (3:46)
Review: Otis Gayle and Robert Dubwise Brown come together for this superb new 7" on Vortex Japan. It's a glorious cover of an already glorious original tune. Their version of 'I'll Be Around' leaves the originals feel-good melodies in place but works them into a lover's rock rhythm with gentle but sunny percussion and a heartfelt re-sung vocal. It's buttery smooth and good for the soul. On the flip is a dub vocal version that is even more laid back and deep, with fleshy bottom ends and wiggling bass.

The Canopy (Armageddon Style)
Mystik 808
Review: OM Unit makes his ZamZam Sounds debut with two tracks that flaunt plenty of power, weight and punch.
A-side track 'Armageddon Style' wraps a prodding, full spped steppers-style rhythm in swirling seas of sparkling synths to great effect, while the slow-stepping 'Mystik 808' on the B goes heavier on the bassline and echo chambers, for what feels like a slower offering, if no less intense.

Review: Emotional Rescue looks to the newly rebuilt but still very much culturally separate East and West Germany of the 1980s with this new EP. It's dub reggae through a post-punk and alternative lens by Hanover artists Felix Holter aka Dubvisionist. All these cuts have a very live, improvised feel because father way he worked from rhythms first and jammed endlessly before adding the vocals. They are taken from their 1987 release 10 Tracks Of Reggae & Dub Music which was inspired by the great Adrian Sherwood label On-U Sound label, and you can hear that clearly.

Review: It should be obvious that the fifth studio album by Micah Shemaiah, Jamaica Jamaica, is a dedication to the reggae homeland. However, anything more than a cursory listen will reveal it to be a mixed-emotive, wistful affair, with the Jamaican reggae once more asserting his reflective, rootsy style to diagnose both the ills and joys of the nation - "Jamaica, Jamaica... the country need a doctor, people". A further two dub versions appear on the album, as well as collaborations with other Jamaican artists such as Eesah, Xana Romeo, Rassi Hardknocks and Mikey General.

Finger On The Trigger (4:37)
Crazy In Kingston (7 Inch rework) (4:04)
Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

What You Won't Do For Love (Mato Mellow Reggae mix) (4:03)
What You Won't Do For Love (Mato dub version) (4:03)
Review: Thomas Blanchot has been casting a spell with his sun-soaked reggae renditions as Mato for a long time now. He's back on his regular stomping ground of Stix with a beautiful version of Roy Ayers' evergreen 'What You Won't Do For Love', with Ethel Lindsey taking on the role as singer to complement Blanchot's sweet and easy riddim. It's a tune primed to greet the warmer weather, staying faithful to the original while giving it a fresh spin. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, we know full well you're going to love flipping it over for the consummate dub version on the B-side.

Outta Sync (Gaudi remix) (4:28)
Review: UK filmmaker, DJ and musician Don Letts commands wide renown for his dual involvement in the punk rock and reggae scenes, and the happy spaces that opened up between them in the late 1970s and beyond. The EP features four remixes of 'Outta Sync', a track from his 2020 album There And Black Again. While the original also appears on the digital EP, its physical versions are split across several vinyl editions. This one hears fresh takes on the original wonky and melodic track from David Holmes and Gaudi, both of whom bring an incredible amount of bassweight to it, not to mention some high-tech delay-sculpting from Holmes.

Review: Leon Leiffer formed The Blackstones in 1974, but since then the band has been through a number of different line-up changes. The current lineup features Leiffer with Tony Mahoney, Jr. Bailey and A.J. Franklin and this new 7" offers two tunes from their tried and tested repertoire. First is a contemporary rework of William DeVaughn's US 70's soul classic that Massive Attack sampled so well, namely 'Be Thankful', and on the flip is a version of Yabby You's roots reggae cut 'Deliver Me' from the 1970s. Both are packed with heat and great musicianship to update them for modern sound systems.

Say I Do (feat John Arthur Bigham) (4:56)
Island Hustle (3:22)
Review: The origins of the Rhythm Roots Allstars lie in a spot called Temple Bar, a club in LA which was a hub for the hottest underground funk and soul in the city in the late 90s. The Allstars were the house band, and the collective has remained strong through the decades, co-writing Grammy-winning And The Anonymous Nobody by De La Soul and recording with the likes of Aloe Blacc and Ghostface Killah. It's hard to believe then that this is the band's first solo release, but here we are, and they don't disappoint. On the A side, 'Say I Do' brings a warm R&B flavour with Fishbone's John Arthur Bigham on vocals, while the flip throws down a searing hot instrumental which speaks to the Allstars' years of experience turning out the club.

Review: Japanese outfit Inokashira Rangers are the world's finest group of Hammond-heavy reggae cover version maestros. They turn their hands to a range of stone cold Western classics and always bring a little sense of fun to their versions. Here it is Nirvana's Smells 'Like Teen Spirit' which they tackle and it is a much loved cut that always sells out, so now gets a reissue. On the flip side is the equally brillaint but more comic 'Summer Madness' with its pillowy drums and liquid synths. A left of centre brace of tunes but essential none the less.

Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless) (4:12)
Review: Inokasira Rangers is a reggae band from Tokyo who've been around since the 1990s, but they're hardly (criminally) known outside of Japan. Their latest release, 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' promises to change that, covering Frankie Valli's timely original from the late '60s, not to mention Crystal Waters' dance-pop hit on the B. A Shibuya-kei sensibility runs through this sweet pair of covers, but the main mode is lo-fi reggae. The Waters cover is particularly charming, as if this were the original, and the song had existed as a folk song for generations prior to the glitzy rave version.

Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love) (Soul mix) (8:04)
Can't Get Enough (Nice Up - Reggae mix) (6:34)
Review: Last year, Freestyle Records reissued 'Tonight's The Night', the 1983 debut from West London outfit Take Three - a collaboration between production trio S.H.E (Steve Sinclair, Peter Hinds and Kevin Ellis) and lover's rock vocal harmony group Alpha (AKA Marlene Richardson and sisters Jackie and Jean Heron). 'Can't Get Enough', another gem from the band's vaults, dates from 1985 and was initially released as their final single. In keeping with the group's roots, it comes in two contrasting mixes: a gorgeously dreamy, glossy and glassy 'Soul Mix' powered forward by squelchy synth-bass, mid-tempo beats and jaunty, jazz-funk style keyboard riffs, and the 'Reggae Mix'. As the title suggests, this radically alters the tempo and groove of the track - it's basically synth-heavy, mid-80s lovers rock - whilst retaining key elements of the A-side soul version.

Grant Dell & Richie Littler - "Disco Hit"

Grant Dell - "Fari A Come"
Review: The Repeat label is doing a great service to the culture of real tech house, nodding to that late 90s sound and carrying work from the likes of Jay Tripwire, Eddie Richards and now Grant Dell. The Dis Chronicles series hits part two with some further obscurities from back in the day which sound as relevant now as they were futuristic back then. 'Disco Hit' was a collaborative effort from Dell and Richie Littler, and it's utterly addictive thanks to those cheeky DX7 organ licks, while Dell's 'Up Yer Strasse Dub' of Len Lewis' 'Illicit' is chunky and dubby in equal measure. Dell's own 'Fari A Come' completes the set with a more overt drop into dub territory, sampling a true Jamaican legend and showing how the tech house sound could transplant onto backroom, head-nodding gear in style.

Burkina Faso (Wagadugu Blues)
Burkina Faso (Wagadugu dub)
Burkina Faso (Jura Soundsystem Discodub)
Review: Emotional Rescue can be relied on to dig up obscure, left of centre dance gems and serve them up to newer, wider audiences. Adu's reggae-pop cut 'Burkina Faso' is a great example, re-purposed for the dancefloor without any of its original flavour lost in the overhaul. A
South Saharan/West African emigre to Brixton, Rauf Adu would go on to fairly sizeable European fame with the Eddy Grant-esque 'Human To Human'. This, however, is his 1982 debut for Copasetic Records, another reggae-pop inspired, ludicrously catchy effort with scorched electric guitar and a Compass Point-style drum/bassline providing rhythmic rocksteadiness. As well as the buffed up original, there's a dub mix, which gives his beautiful guitar plenty of room to breathe, and an appearance from the Isle of Jura Sound System boss Kevin Griffiths , whose remix completes the trio of mixes.

Review: After their outstanding run of EPs, Al Wooton and Valentina Magaletti broaden the scope of their post-punk tinged dub collaboration with an album as ambitious as it is deadly. Given Magaletti's position as one of the most prolific, in-demand and inventive percussionists in active service in and around alternative music in the UK, there is of course a strong focus on drums throughout Deliverance & Spiritual Warfare, but equally the pair relish the opportunity to bring all kinds of fresh tones into their sonic palette. From obscure and exotic instrumentation to simmering orchestral swells, treading the line between overtly electronic soundsystem music and rugged organic fare, this is as good as the prior EPs promised it would be. Truly essential, mesmerising stuff.

Bossarocker (Bossa edit) (6:05)
Bossarocker (Break On edit) (4:31)
Review: Cuts From The Vaults is the latest in a long line of "mystery" edit labels, with some of the material on show originally appearing on various obscure, now hard-to-find white labels at various points over the last two decades. The A-side features two tweaks of 'Shot' (AKA Eric Clapton's reggae-rock cover of Bob Marley's 'I Shot The Sheriff') - a slightly dubbed-out, reworked and extended full vocal version, and the arguably superior, groove-based 'Special Dub'. Over on the flip, 'Bossarocker' sees the Doors' 'Break On Through' get the rework treatment. The 'Bossa edit' is a bossanova beat-powered rework of a live recording, while the 'Break On edit' is a punchy, subtly breakbeat-driven revision of a bluesy studio recording. Superior edits of rock classics: don't sleep!

Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Review: Widely lauded as the greatest female singer in the history of Jamaican music, Griffiths emerged onto the Jamaican music scene during the late 60s. She quickly made her mark with a series of popular singles during that period, building up to eventual international fame in the early 70s, side by side with her long-term friend and regular collaborator, Bob Andy. It was Andy and Griffith's uplifting reggae remake of Nina Simone's inspiring song, '(To Be) Young, Gifted & Black' (featured on the second LP) that really cemented Griffiths' position on the world stage. With a long list of successful hits following this initial emergence into international fame - the best of which can be found on this incredible new two-part LP - this collection is a beautiful homage to one of Jamaica's all time music legends.

The second followed in March 20 just as the pandemic hit and did a fine job of helping us to forget our woes by transporting us to a faraway land and now this third volume repeats the trick. It offers four sides of perfectly escapist dub, Balearic bliss, sun-kissed ambient and lo-fi soul. It comes from the likes of DJ Jimmy Groove, Full Moon Scientist and plenty of originals and remixes from Jura Soundsystem themselves.

Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

Review: British-born Sheila Hylton's name is catnip for reggae-loving record diggers. The vocalist spent much of her childhood in Jamaica and has an effortlessly soulful take on roots and lovers' rock. She recorded several albums and many singles but none are as sought after as her cover of 'It's Gonna Take a Lot of Love', which was originally written by Neil Young. An original copy of this 45rpm will cost you about a week's wages so Jaywax has pressed up this version so you can own your own mint copy. Flip it over for the instrumental dub version 'Labamba' which is laden with percussion, keys and studio trickery.

Review: Death by Tickling is a masterfully intricate new collaborative album from Scotch Rolex and Shackleton. The is the sort of brain boggling and mind melting album that demand to be listened to loud, in the dark, on a great sound system or up close on headphones. It's a melange of languid dance music rhythms with experimental synths and percussion adding freaky details up top. Full of wildly unpredictable changes and weird time signatures, zoned out trance music and darkened dub, cosmic synth freak outs and ferocious sound designs, this is a truly unique record on every level.

Review: Acclaimed German duo Boozoo Bajou get their 2005 curiosity 'Dust My Broom' reissued. The trip-hop album featured the intriguing fusion of Cajun and Caribbean rhythms, courtesy of core contributing percussionists Florian Seyberth and Peter Heider. It's a smokey, dubbed-out dust-trailer, featuring contributions from members of Fat Freddy's Drop and Top Cat. "Let me take you to the swamp" it urges, as a strange backstreet of delay and drums unfolds

Review: Dark dubstep allstar Dayzero first came to out attention with 'Allca', where they pitted themselves alongside contemporaries Gantz or Coki in their unique displays of wonk and lo-fi production techniques. 'Pages' and 'Sen' continue this charge; watery, knocky and psychopathic, both tunes sound like a tank trudging through sludge. Militant and gritty.

Review: Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist Kabaka Pyramid combines conscious lyrics with a versatility that has more than justified his de facto membership of the nascent reggae revival movement, also including artists like Protoje, Chronixx and Jesse Royal. Here comes The Kalling, his second album, charting collabs with some of the best names in his chosen field - such as Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, Buju Banton, Protoje and Jesse Royal. The album is a mixture of inspirational and hard-hitting experiences, and equally socially conscious tracks, namely the title track and 'The Kalling' and 'Kontraband Pt. 2'.

Review: Electronic music kingpins The Orb present Prism, their stonking 18th studio album and their first for Cooking Vinyl. Chillout ambient, house, dub, krautrock, drum & bass and synthpop all collide into a javellining concoction, amounting to something of a tribute to the continuum of roots genres that have lent a strong hand in building up UK dance music over the years. With guest appearances from Youth, Gaudi, David Harrow and a host of others, it makes for a huge legacy LP. The Orb also plunge the depths of NASA's free sound library, getting at the cosmic aura that has accompanied dance music's existence from the jump.

In A While Crocodile (3:27)
Review: Junior Dell & The Delights are back with a mighty fine new single that comes imbued with plenty of proper good old school ska and reggae values. It's an upbeat rhythm that will get you on your toes with its energetic horns and riffs, swaggering drums and superb vocal work. On the flip of this limited 7" is, of course, 'In A While Crocodile'. It's a continuation of the a-side with just as much swagger and energy. Both tunes are essential and mark another fine drop from this great modern day outfit.

Review: Kevin Griffiths (aka Jura Soundsystem) is the man behind the Isle of Jura label and now it turns to Ambient Warrior once more for II, which comes a couple of years after the hugely successful reissue of their Dub's Journey album form 1995. This is a previously unreleased record made between 1995 and 1999 and it comes from the same pool of sound as that LP. It's a seamless blend of instrumental dub, reggae, bossa nova and tango music that is hugely immersive and distinctive. None of the tunes you will have heard before and that are more great windows into the minds of Ronnie Lion and Andrea Terrano.

Review: The Specials' ghostly pop-dub classic 'Ghost Town' resonated far and wide with international audiences ever since its initial release in 1981. First springboarded by the gothic ska/rocksteady group's song of the same name - with its gloomy meditations on destitution and winters of discontent around the time, manifested in statements like "all the clubs are being closed down" and "too much fighting on the dancefloor" - the ensuing album is similarly political, urgent and doomy. Classics such as 'A Message To You, Rudy' and 'Gangsters' appear once more on this stealth limited edition reissue.
