The Canopy (Armageddon Style)
Mystik 808
Review: OM Unit makes his ZamZam Sounds debut with two tracks that flaunt plenty of power, weight and punch.
A-side track 'Armageddon Style' wraps a prodding, full spped steppers-style rhythm in swirling seas of sparkling synths to great effect, while the slow-stepping 'Mystik 808' on the B goes heavier on the bassline and echo chambers, for what feels like a slower offering, if no less intense.

Review: Emotional Rescue looks to the newly rebuilt but still very much culturally separate East and West Germany of the 1980s with this new EP. It's dub reggae through a post-punk and alternative lens by Hanover artists Felix Holter aka Dubvisionist. All these cuts have a very live, improvised feel because father way he worked from rhythms first and jammed endlessly before adding the vocals. They are taken from their 1987 release 10 Tracks Of Reggae & Dub Music which was inspired by the great Adrian Sherwood label On-U Sound label, and you can hear that clearly.

Review: It should be obvious that the fifth studio album by Micah Shemaiah, Jamaica Jamaica, is a dedication to the reggae homeland. However, anything more than a cursory listen will reveal it to be a mixed-emotive, wistful affair, with the Jamaican reggae once more asserting his reflective, rootsy style to diagnose both the ills and joys of the nation - "Jamaica, Jamaica... the country need a doctor, people". A further two dub versions appear on the album, as well as collaborations with other Jamaican artists such as Eesah, Xana Romeo, Rassi Hardknocks and Mikey General.

What You Won't Do For Love (Mato Mellow Reggae mix) (4:03)
What You Won't Do For Love (Mato dub version) (4:03)
Review: Thomas Blanchot has been casting a spell with his sun-soaked reggae renditions as Mato for a long time now. He's back on his regular stomping ground of Stix with a beautiful version of Roy Ayers' evergreen 'What You Won't Do For Love', with Ethel Lindsey taking on the role as singer to complement Blanchot's sweet and easy riddim. It's a tune primed to greet the warmer weather, staying faithful to the original while giving it a fresh spin. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, we know full well you're going to love flipping it over for the consummate dub version on the B-side.

Outta Sync (David Holmes remix - edit) (4:30)
Outta Sync (Gaudi remix) (4:28)
Review: UK filmmaker, DJ and musician Don Letts commands wide renown for his dual involvement in the punk rock and reggae scenes, and the happy spaces that opened up between them in the late 1970s and beyond. The EP features four remixes of 'Outta Sync', a track from his 2020 album There And Black Again. While the original also appears on the digital EP, its physical versions are split across several vinyl editions. This one hears fresh takes on the original wonky and melodic track from David Holmes and Gaudi, both of whom bring an incredible amount of bassweight to it, not to mention some high-tech delay-sculpting from Holmes.

Grant Dell & Richie Littler - "Disco Hit"
Len Lewis - "Illicit" (Grant Dell Up Yer Strasse dub)
Grant Dell - "Fari A Come"
Review: The Repeat label is doing a great service to the culture of real tech house, nodding to that late 90s sound and carrying work from the likes of Jay Tripwire, Eddie Richards and now Grant Dell. The Dis Chronicles series hits part two with some further obscurities from back in the day which sound as relevant now as they were futuristic back then. 'Disco Hit' was a collaborative effort from Dell and Richie Littler, and it's utterly addictive thanks to those cheeky DX7 organ licks, while Dell's 'Up Yer Strasse Dub' of Len Lewis' 'Illicit' is chunky and dubby in equal measure. Dell's own 'Fari A Come' completes the set with a more overt drop into dub territory, sampling a true Jamaican legend and showing how the tech house sound could transplant onto backroom, head-nodding gear in style.

Burkina Faso (feat Jura Soundsystem mix)
Burkina Faso (Wagadugu Blues)
Burkina Faso (Wagadugu dub)
Burkina Faso (Jura Soundsystem Discodub)
Review: Emotional Rescue can be relied on to dig up obscure, left of centre dance gems and serve them up to newer, wider audiences. Adu's reggae-pop cut 'Burkina Faso' is a great example, re-purposed for the dancefloor without any of its original flavour lost in the overhaul. A
South Saharan/West African emigre to Brixton, Rauf Adu would go on to fairly sizeable European fame with the Eddy Grant-esque 'Human To Human'. This, however, is his 1982 debut for Copasetic Records, another reggae-pop inspired, ludicrously catchy effort with scorched electric guitar and a Compass Point-style drum/bassline providing rhythmic rocksteadiness. As well as the buffed up original, there's a dub mix, which gives his beautiful guitar plenty of room to breathe, and an appearance from the Isle of Jura Sound System boss Kevin Griffiths , whose remix completes the trio of mixes.

Review: After their outstanding run of EPs, Al Wooton and Valentina Magaletti broaden the scope of their post-punk tinged dub collaboration with an album as ambitious as it is deadly. Given Magaletti's position as one of the most prolific, in-demand and inventive percussionists in active service in and around alternative music in the UK, there is of course a strong focus on drums throughout Deliverance & Spiritual Warfare, but equally the pair relish the opportunity to bring all kinds of fresh tones into their sonic palette. From obscure and exotic instrumentation to simmering orchestral swells, treading the line between overtly electronic soundsystem music and rugged organic fare, this is as good as the prior EPs promised it would be. Truly essential, mesmerising stuff.

Use Me (3:39)
Review: Stix Records is the sub-label of superb French outlet Favorite Recordings, and it is reserved for heavy dub cuts. This one finds label regular Mato reworking a classic reggae roller first written by Kool & The Gang. His gorgeous version is perfect for hot summer nights with its languid Fender Rhodes leads and sun kissed beats. It's loved up and perfectly, frankly. On the flip is a reggae rework of Bill Withers', who is sadly no long with us, 'Use Me,' repackaged with a playful harmonica lead and more grinding chords over the gently tumbling beats.

Review: The first Jura Soundsystem-led compilation Transmissions One came back in 2018 and was one of the best of that year. The second followed in March 20 just as the pandemic hit and did a fine job of helping us to forget our woes by transporting us to a faraway land and now this third volume repeats the trick. It offers four sides of perfectly escapist dub, Balearic bliss, sun-kissed ambient and lo-fi soul. It comes from the likes of DJ Jimmy Groove, Full Moon Scientist and plenty of originals and remixes from Jura Soundsystem themselves.

Review: There are seemingly no limits to the music Emotional Rescue will put out. This time they look back to the post punk scene of Bristol in the early 80s. Mouth was a short-lived outfit that put out just a couple of releases, but each one blazed a trail though leftfield percussive sounds, wave, weird jazz and electronics. Andy Guy and Rob Merrill were the main members with the likes of Nellie Hooper also in the band's orbit. This record is packed with tribal drumming and floating horns, broken dubs and avant-jazz but all with a proudly DIY attitude. It's packed with heady moments and wild steppers that havent aged a bit and still sound future.

Review: Death by Tickling is a masterfully intricate new collaborative album from Scotch Rolex and Shackleton. The is the sort of brain boggling and mind melting album that demand to be listened to loud, in the dark, on a great sound system or up close on headphones. It's a melange of languid dance music rhythms with experimental synths and percussion adding freaky details up top. Full of wildly unpredictable changes and weird time signatures, zoned out trance music and darkened dub, cosmic synth freak outs and ferocious sound designs, this is a truly unique record on every level.

The trip-hop album featured the intriguing fusion of Cajun and Caribbean rhythms, courtesy of core contributing percussionists Florian Seyberth and Peter Heider. It's a smokey, dubbed-out dust-trailer, featuring contributions from members of Fat Freddy's Drop and Top Cat. "Let me take you to the swamp" it urges, as a strange backstreet of delay and drums unfolds

Review: Electronic music kingpins The Orb present Prism, their stonking 18th studio album and their first for Cooking Vinyl. Chillout ambient, house, dub, krautrock, drum & bass and synthpop all collide into a javellining concoction, amounting to something of a tribute to the continuum of roots genres that have lent a strong hand in building up UK dance music over the years. With guest appearances from Youth, Gaudi, David Harrow and a host of others, it makes for a huge legacy LP. The Orb also plunge the depths of NASA's free sound library, getting at the cosmic aura that has accompanied dance music's existence from the jump.

This is a previously unreleased record made between 1995 and 1999 and it comes from the same pool of sound as that LP. It's a seamless blend of instrumental dub, reggae, bossa nova and tango music that is hugely immersive and distinctive. None of the tunes you will have heard before and that are more great windows into the minds of Ronnie Lion and Andrea Terrano.

Review: Cultural icon Don Letts joins forces here with the masterful musician Greg Foat and producer James Thorpe to make a new entry into the Relatin project series. It is one where artists engaged with Latin musical roots from another era and update them for the here and now. Here they bring plenty of heavy dub vibes and great special awareness to a tune by Venezuelans Un Dos Tres. Greg Foat & James Thorpe also step up with a remix that is just as heavy and summery.

They put out some 34 albums and 117 releases in all and tunes like their 'Can't Stop Righteousness' is one that will never go out of fashion, though today might be known as 'Can't Stop Wokeness'. Plenty of reverb has been added to the vocals on this 7" reissue of the classic with a stripped back version on the flip for this who prefer to keep it minimal. Both sides have lush acoustic riffs and woody percussion over the flabby dubs.

Review: Lacksley Castell's 'What A Great Day' is something of a roots reggae classic that has been long hard to find after first dropping back in 1979. It still spuds fresh and will pack a punch on any sound system. Prince Jammy is a master of mixing this sort of stuff who later went on to be a big player in the dancehall game having eventually ditched his analogue tools in favour of digital ones. His dub 'Throne of Blood' is on there flip to round out another brilliant 45rpm from VP, who are masters of just that.

Review: Multi-Culti regular Dreems (AKA Aussie producer Angus Gruzman) makes music that's deeply psychedelic, but often extremely difficult to neatly pigeonhole. He's at it again on this first outing for Pinchy & Friends, which combines a trio of original cuts with a similar number of total reconstructions from dub hero Scientist. You'll find the former on the A, with analogue-rich synth-wave throbber 'Watchamacallit Machine' being joined by the minimalistic, bass-heavy brilliance of 'String Gadget' and the tactile psychedelic electronic funk of 'Here Comes The New Prophet'. Scientist's dubs are naturally excellent, with the much-loved mix-master re-imagining Gruzman's tracks as deep, spaced-out electronic dub tracks. They're all great, with his dub of 'Here Comes The New Prophet' being the most dancefloor-ready of the lot.

That time came in 1995, when British sound system legend Mad Professor - responsible for some of the greatest UK-made dub records of all time - put his distinctive twist on Protection. 21 years on, the set still sounds sublime: a radical translation that frequently bares only a passing resemblance to the Bristol band's original. It's packed with highlights, from the spaced-out, dub-house rework of "Spying Glass" ("I Spy"), to the ricocheting percussion hits and twinkling pianos of "Weather Storm (Cool Monsoon)", and creepy, delay-laden string surges of "Eternal Feedback (Sly)".

Review: Easy Star All Stars are back, refreshing a simple yet effective formula - melodic reggae covers of titanic rock albums. The New York natives have released several tribute albums to said figureheads, not least Pink Floyd, Radiohead, The Beatles and Michael Jackson. Ziggy Stardub, evidently, is a reggae version of David Bowie's 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Bowiemaniacs will be Bowie-led over by this 15-track collective vision in dub, which comprehensively serves up serene versions of 'Starman', 'Five Years' and 'Moonage Daydream' and four actual dub versions. To top it off, there are myriad features from fellow coverer fanatics, including Macy Gray, Steel Pulse, Mortimer and Carlton Livingston.

Joe Yorke & Stand High Patrol - "Midnight Rock" (3:11)
Stand High Patrol - "Midnight Stories" (3:09)
Review: An exquisitely weird and gorgeous dub 7" from Stand High, the new imprint from the notorious soundsystem's now relentless assembly line. Following up 2021's 'Quicksand', 'Midnight Rock' hears the producer and crooner Joe Yorke glide over a sticky, weighty beat in his trademark falsetto tone. He hits every note seamlessly, despite the difficulty of holding one's own in such a register. Meanwhile, Pupajim's deejay style 'Midnight Stories' lurks angstily on the reply-like B. A combative and defiant new steppers' EP.

Don't Look Back In Anger (remastered)
The Regulators - "Don't Look Back In Anger" (Re-mixed & Re-mastered) (4:55)
Prince Deadly - "Dub Look Back In Anger" (4:47)
Review: You can't beat a good cover of a classic tune and they don't come much better than this version of Oasis's masterpiece 'Don't Look Back In Anger' by The Regulators. Original Gravity come through with it on 7" in its 'Re-mixed & Re-mastered' form. The lead melodies come from big fat horns, while the lazy drums sway to and fro and bring an all-new kind of energy. Prince Deadly then gets to work on the studio dials to dub it out to perfection on 'Dub Look Back In Anger'. Two doozies.
