Review: Pink Floyd's Roger Waters recorded The Lockdown Sessions at home during the COVID lockdowns between 2020 and 2021. Of course, intrigue was bound to spark up as to what Waters would be doing in this time, so we're not surprised supply has matched demand. What ensues is a mixture of exclusive live originals (mastered for this EP of course), and a handful of new versions of old Floyd classics. The 2022 version of 'Comfortably Numb' falls into the latter category, appearing on the B-side. Meanwhile, brand new cuts like 'Mother' and 'Two Suns In The Sunset' appear on the A, acting as Waters' new reflections on a world driven mad; the songs were first streamed live to fans during the incipient, isolated phase of Zoom-calling and make-do music performances from inside musicians' homes.

Review: Jim Baron is a well-known DJ, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who co-founded Crazy P and who assumed new alias Jim for solo work back in 2021. His debut album Love Makes Magic is a superb mix of lush harmonic vocals, with funky back beats and a mix of organic brass and electronic synth sounds. It is music based around the work of the guitar but with plenty of sunny but eyed soul and subtle beach vibes that make it a gorgeous listen, especially as the days get longer and the sun that bit warmer.

Review: Oga For Oga is the second solo album by Swedish musician Elin Engstrom, who records as Loopsel, and is also one half of Monokultur. The album is a collection of atmospheric and experimental songs that blend guitar, vocals, synths and field recordings, owing something to the recently popularised sensibility of "gothic folk", with the lines between acoustic and synthetic heard on standout pieces like 'Svart' and 'Hjarta' thoroughly blurred. A formerly DIY-centric project from Engstrom, she's now turned the tide to worldwide distribution, coming to New York's finest DFA Records for the first time.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: Tears For Fears' debut album was titled The Hurting and we now gather it has turned 40, spurring the release of this reissue. Despite its dark themes of childhood trauma, emotional repression and primal screaming theapy, the album peaked at number one, ascending to the status of a template-cutter for all the synth-pop and new wave to come thereafter - and proving that the dance music loving masses perhaps weren't so emotionally repressed ater all. The Hurting still features some of the band's most memorable tracks, such as 'Mad World', 'Pale Shelter' and 'Change'. This special edition has been remastered at half speed for optimal clarity; a treat for the audiophiles who've moved past the arena and into the living room.

Review: "It's grown on me as well. I think this song has something to do with the classical world, something that's out of reach. Someplace you'd like to be beyond your experience. Something that is so supreme and first rate that you could never come back down from the mountain. That you've achieved the unthinkable." So said Bob Dylan himself in a 2020 New York Times interview when asked why 'When I Paint My Masterpiece', his 1971 sleeper hit, had made its way to the forefront of live shows in more contemporary times. Opening with that track, this album reflects the score of the 2021 concert movie, Shadow Kingdom, which in itself reaffirms the artist as one of the 20th, and 21st Century's greatest songwriters. There's really nothing more to say.

Review: It's the era of nepo babies, sure - but few artists have owned up to the phenomenon with a sense of humour, nor properly investigated it in album format. Baxter Dury, the infamous artist whose merits ironically don't exist purely insofar as him being the son of Ian, now makes himself an exception to this rule. The new album I Thought I Was Better Than You is an honest yet well-humoured take on Dury's own fortunate upringing - with highlights like 'Sincere', 'So Much Money' and 'Pale White Nissan' hearing him sift through the memories, with various self-caricatures used to interrogate the double-edged sword of at least partially-inheriting an entertainment brand. It's not just this, though: it's also a rumination Dury's childhood as a whole, being the sonic extension of Dury's 2021 coming-of-age autobiography, Chaise Lounge.

Review: The Wedding Present are an archetypal indie band if ever there was one. They first formed in 1985 and quickly made their way to prominence as part of the C86 scene - named after the cassettes to which NME recorded new tunes from hot bands of the times. Founder and only constant band member David Gedge wrote intelligent lyrics and paired them with fast-paced jangle-pop rhythms. Their debut album George Best in 1992 was a big one and Watusi - while coming some time later - was still sharp and commercially successful, with big tunes being the likes of 'It's A Gas' and 'Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah'.

Review: Bay Area punk legends Rancid are back, finally. Tomorrow Never Comes arrives six years after Trouble Maker, marking the longest gap between albums the veterans have ever managed since they kicked off in 1991. Of course there's a degree of expectation around a Rancid album, and all you need to do is stick on the first title track and you'll know you're getting the full hit. This is Rancid at their fist-shaking, shit-kicking best, with Armstrong and Frederiksen sounding as vital as they did on And Out Come The Wolves. Clocking in at 16 tracks in 28 minutes it's also their shortest album to date. Say everything you need to in less than two minutes - it's the Rancid way!

Review: Now in their second decade as a band, it seems almost unthinkable that anyone should not have long-since fallen head over heels for Detroit's Protomartyr. The post-punk set stormed out of the starting blocks amid a niche but very notable resurgence in the sound, but years later have managed to continue staying relatively true to their remit, swerving any and every opportunity to reinvent in the hope of finding a spot on the next bandwagon, while still managing to avoid falling into repetitive pitfalls. Ever imaginative, in many ways Formal Growth In the Desert is their most uncompromising ode to the style we associate them with, and certainly reflects how close they can come to starting a full blow riot in your front room. Nevertheless, it's also packed full of tender moments, not least on closer 'The Author', an ode to iconic singer Joe Casey's late mother. A powerhouse band returning with a powerhouse record, even in its softest seconds.

Review: Beach Fossils are regarded as bedroom-pop trailblazers from Brooklyn. They were one of the most influential and well-loved New York bands of the 2010s and manage to find some of that form here on new album Bunny. As inventors of jangle pop, they revisit that with some extra warm and stylish songwriting, lush dream-pop moods and hints of post-punk energy. Lyrical themes include the joys of being a father and other equally brilliant but less noble subjects such as how good it is to smoke a cigarette out of a car window with friends.

Review: With a slew of releases for Dirty Hit, it was only a matter of time before Amber Bain's project, The Japanese House, would find its debut album release. Good at Falling presents Bain's vocal talent at its fullest, with vocoder work to rival the best of pop to come out of Istanbul's studios or Kolkata's streets - see "Went To Meet Her". Ethereal and poppy, there's comparisons to be made with the music of Ladyhawke in an album that subtly dabbles in genres likes post-dubstep (see "Wild") to cosmic disco and emotional electronica (see "Everybody Hates Me") across an album that's proud and steadfast in its folky, singer-songwriting form.

Cat: DOAR XII. Rel: 25 May 23
Track 1 (19:35)
Track 2 (22:58)
Review: Several new reissues of Current 93's music come via Cashen's Gap, the home imprint of said industrial supergroup - which infamously includes musical iconoclast David Tibet among its ranks. Night At The Four Winds Bar Maldoror is one of their albums, released in 2023 - it's a complete reworking of their 1986 album Live At Bar Maldoror, with the original album playing forwards in the right-hand channel and backwards in the left-hand channel. Its 15 tracks explore themes of death, apocalypse and transcendence, using a mix of industrial, folk and ambient sounds. Don't miss it, as it's one of the band's many curiosities, and is a star example of what made the band so lauded as among Britain's weirdest acts in the 80s and 90s.

Review: A month before he passed away in December 2002, Joe Strummer delivered what turned out to be his final performance - a benefit gig for striking firefighters at Acton Town Hall, where he was backed by his then band the Mescaleros. This must-have CD presents that performance in its entirety, including the infamous ending - where Strummer's former Clash bandmate Mick Jones emerged from the audience to join him on stage for performances of 'Bank Robber', 'White Riot' and 'London's Burning' (it was the first time the two had performed together since 1983). Recorded for a radio broadcast, the gig was undoubtedly special, with Strummer and his bandmates powering through classics including 'Police & Thieves', '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais' and 'I Fought The Law'.

Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: Witch were one of the first bands in Zambia to get their music recorded and even secure an international record deal back in the 70s. Into the 80s, they blazed a trail of psych rock infused with African rhythms, and a reissue on Now Again some 10 years back helped bring renewed attention back to the pioneering sound Emmanuel Chanda and the rest of the band had forged. Now Chanda and fellow Witch veteran Patrick Mwondela have been back in the Zambian studio where they recorded 1975's Lazy Bones, except now they're backed up by a band including Nic Mauskovic of The Mauskovic Dance Band and Dutch studio whizz Jacco Gardner, making incendiary fusion music steeped in the band's psych heritage, but equally moving forwards in exciting new ways .

Review: Although it's only appearing now, Bob Dylan's 40th album was recorded back in 2021 and formed the soundtrack to Alma Ha'rel's intimate concert film, Shadow Kingdom: The Early Songs of Bob Dylan. The concert depicted in the film, in which Dylan ran through songs from the first part of his career on a sound stage in Los Angeles, was something of a fiction, with the actual recordings featured being captured in a West Hollywood studio. That's what we get here: Dylan delivering decidedly bluesy folk and Americana interpretations of songs from the formative years of his career, ably supported by a cast of musician friends including Don Was (up-tight bass) and country legend T-Bone Burnett (guitar). Dylan's superb songs have never sounded better.

Review: Despite emerging as a synth-pop outfit, Talk Talk's sound evolved considerably in a short space of time. By 1986, when their third album The Colour of Spring hit record stores, they'd ditched the synth-pop of their debut and the free-jazz-influenced post-rock of its sequel in favour of a more traditional indie sound - albeit one still infused with some electronics and bags of aural invention. The performance captured on this CD (originally recorded for a radio broadcast) dates from 86 and mixes interpretations of tracks from The Colour of the Spring with new takes on earlier singles and classic cuts. Highlights include a rushing version of 'It's My Life', the concert-opening 'Talk Talk' and a decidedly Balearic, harmonica-sporting 'Living In Another World'.

Review: Squid return to Warp with O Monolith, amping up the indie festival favourites' new penchant for fast, hardcore jangle-jams peppered with electronic glitchings and odd subject matters. Bright Green Field laid the formula at our feet, but we're certain it'll be O Monolith that best represents Ollie Judge and co.'s newly impassioned, kooky sound. Still, the playful song structures and exclaimed vocals remain present. New highlights like 'Undergrowth' capture it best: raucous blary horn sections, frightening choruses, and a sound that evokes that of a hellish circus, all make this one a rather enigmatic, intelligent listen. We'd expect nothing less from Squid.

Review: Half a century old and still kicking raw ass like it's still 1972, Alice Cooper's School's Out gets a deluxe reissue treatment befitting of such an iconic album. On this whopping triple-vinyl edition, Rhino have had the original album remastered so it's sounding better than ever, but of course there's heaps of bonus material to enjoy as well. You get the single versions of 'School's Out' and 'Gutter Cat vs. The Jets', an alternate version of 'Alma Mater' and an early demo of 'Elected'. On top of all that is a recording of the band's concert in Miami in 1972, recorded just before they stepped into the studio to lay down the album.

Review: Some tempos are pivotal to certain genres and 140 is one of those when it comes to dubstep. For that reason it is the title of this fine on going All Stars series from DUPLOC. Volume four is another masterful one with all niches explored starting with the low-end wobble of Mob Killa's 'Hattori' which is a brilliantly moody and late night saunter through a desolate urban landscape. Oudjat's 'Losing Control' is just as menacing and dark, and Ego Death pairs to back further to lush echoing hits and warped synths that hang in the air on 'Run It.' The flip side offers three more sparse but impactful cuts of hefty 140 bass brilliance.

Review: One of legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young's many excellent live albums, No Kidding was recorded live at the BBC TV Centre in London in 1971. Some of this set has been bootlegged before now on the Borken Arrow album but now the whole set comes for the first time. It is from a time when Young was mastering a new sound with tracks such as 'Old Man' and 'Heart Of Gold'. The eight song set comes on limited edition translucent gold vinyl and is a great document of Young's evolution that sounds nice and loud thanks to a great mastering job.

He clocked up consecutive platinum-selling albums as well as five Top 40 hits such 'I'm Eighteen,' 'School's Out' and 'No More Mr. Nice Guy.' This reissue comes alongside a reissue of the 1972 album School's Out and has been newly remastered with the addition of rare recordings and previously unreleased live performances. This one topped out at #21 on the Billboard albums chart and featured hit singles such as 'Under My Wheels' and 'Be My Lover' as well as a prog-rock-inspired epic in the shape of 'Halo Of Flies.'

Not much else is known about them but there sure is a hell of a lot of music to get stuck into. This album was dropped as one of five last year - alongside 11, AIIR, Earth and Untitled (God)) - all for free and all on the same day. That is a mad thing to do and you might think they can't all be good albums, but they are. This is another lo-fi soul masterpiece from one of the best bands of our time.

Review: Tyr was Black Sabbath's second for the IRS label and their first of the 1990s - the entire spate of albums from this period is now being reissued and this one heavily leans into Norse mythological themes, perhaps unintentionally playing up to the black metallic aspect of their name (it is indeed extremely atmospheric for a heavy metal record). Lyrics concerning obscure Nordic gods and ascension to Valhalla temper this solo-heavy monument of a record.

Review: A rock n' roll compilation with a twist, 28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley's Jukebox is a brand new selector's V/A LP from the 1990s Britpop figurehead and former member of the band Longpigs and Pulp. Diving deep into his personal collection here, this album reflects Hawley's absolute dedication to a pastime few may already know him for: slowly amassing a mammoth selection of 7" records in the mode of garage rock and skiffle. Many are instrumentals, flaunting Hawley's ear for a sound that goes beyond just lyricism or theme. With star cuts from the likes of The Timekeepers and Bobby Gentry, certainly do not miss this is if you're the the right kind of British rock obsessive.

Review: Come are not that widely talked about in the field of mid 90s alt rock from the US, but their sound was truly unique and they deserve all the fresh appreciation they can get. Near Life Experience was their third album, released in 1996 after the original rhythm section had departed. The stand ins drew from bands like The Jesus Lizard and Tortoise, so already you know the vague area the sound resides in. Funnelling a slight country twang into noise rock's errant tendencies and with Thalia Zedek's hard-bitten vocal delivery up front, it's a genuinely brilliant album which now returns via Fire on pink vinyl.
