Review: Jim Baron is a well-known DJ, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who co-founded Crazy P and who assumed new alias Jim for solo work back in 2021. His debut album Love Makes Magic is a superb mix of lush harmonic vocals, with funky back beats and a mix of organic brass and electronic synth sounds. It is music based around the work of the guitar but with plenty of sunny but eyed soul and subtle beach vibes that make it a gorgeous listen, especially as the days get longer and the sun that bit warmer.

Review: Oga For Oga is the second solo album by Swedish musician Elin Engstrom, who records as Loopsel, and is also one half of Monokultur. The album is a collection of atmospheric and experimental songs that blend guitar, vocals, synths and field recordings, owing something to the recently popularised sensibility of "gothic folk", with the lines between acoustic and synthetic heard on standout pieces like 'Svart' and 'Hjarta' thoroughly blurred. So said Bob Dylan himself in a 2020 New York Times interview when asked why 'When I Paint My Masterpiece', his 1971 sleeper hit, had made its way to the forefront of live shows in more contemporary times. Opening with that track, this album reflects the score of the 2021 concert movie, Shadow Kingdom, which in itself reaffirms the artist as one of the 20th, and 21st Century's greatest songwriters. There's really nothing more to say.

Review: Several new reissues of Current 93's music come via Cashen's Gap, the home imprint of said industrial supergroup - which infamously includes musical iconoclast David Tibet among its ranks. Night At The Four Winds Bar Maldoror is one of their albums, released in 2023 - it's a complete reworking of their 1986 album Live At Bar Maldoror, with the original album playing forwards in the right-hand channel and backwards in the left-hand channel. Its 15 tracks explore themes of death, apocalypse and transcendence, using a mix of industrial, folk and ambient sounds. Don't miss it, as it's one of the band's many curiosities, and is a star example of what made the band so lauded as among Britain's weirdest acts in the 80s and 90s.

Review: Although it's only appearing now, Bob Dylan's 40th album was recorded back in 2021 and formed the soundtrack to Alma Ha'rel's intimate concert film, Shadow Kingdom: The Early Songs of Bob Dylan. The concert depicted in the film, in which Dylan ran through songs from the first part of his career on a sound stage in Los Angeles, was something of a fiction, with the actual recordings featured being captured in a West Hollywood studio. That's what we get here: Dylan delivering decidedly bluesy folk and Americana interpretations of songs from the formative years of his career, ably supported by a cast of musician friends including Don Was (up-tight bass) and country legend T-Bone Burnett (guitar). Dylan's superb songs have never sounded better.

Review: Anyone who has watched the documentary 'The Sound Of Progress' will know how truly bonkers Current 93 were, and presumably still are. The British experimental group are currently in the process of either reissuing or reinterpreting several of their former LPs and live shows - one of these being Great Aleph Lies Dreaming. This LP is a so-called "ReDreaming" of their 2009 album Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain, and by and large contains an increasingly weird and effected sound compared to the more straightforward original - in turn drew on tropes ranging from the apocalypse to doom metal and stoner rock.

Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Review: Fans of The Grateful Dead listen up: you should have been taking note of Rose City Band before now. Don't worry, though, this self-titled from a blues-tipped troupe - who clearly understand the joys of psychedelia - is the outfit's debut. As such while you've missed a bit, there's hopefully far more to come. When it comes to outfits like Rose City Band it's easy to simply reel off a list of people the pack have elements of, partly because accurate definitions don't come easy when there are shades of garage rock, tripped out roll, and even some hallucinogenic take on country and western swoon at play. And that's just on the appropriately titled "Wandering Feeling". You could well nod to Moon Duo, Little Feat and the aforementioned Dead, alongside Cosmic Americana, of course. References aside, RCB rank among the finest making this fare, so prepare to get lost in a kaleidoscopic road trip.

Review: American country rock singer-songwriter Jason Isbell and his backing band The 400 Unit present Weathervanes, the latest fruit of their labour and a reflection on recent years of pandemic, lockdown and social unrest. Meditating on how the pandemic blurred the artists' personal and political worlds - often, they're thought to be separate - songs like 'The High Road', 'Death Wish' and 'Only Children' are twanging ruminations on romance, goodbyes and being (at least somewhat) unable to help those in need when they're struggling the most. "What's the difference between a breakdown and a breakthrough?" We agree.

Review: Following the amazing success story of Vashti Bunyan's recent re-emergence as an artist after an exile of over 30 years, we are proud and excited to release "Some Things Just Stick In Your Mind", a comprehensive compilation of early recordings dating from the period prior to Vashti's classic "Just another Diamond Day" album which was originally released 1970. Titled after Vashti's (Jagger/Richards-penned) debut single which opens the compilation, this double-album represents an attempt to both open out and draw a line under the past, and also to try to set the record straight about the disparity between how Vashti viewed (and still views) herself against the way she has been popularly perceived. Widely construed as a folk singer - a tag she fundamentally disagrees with - these recordings instead reveal Vashti as a pop singer, however 'fragile' and unique. A complete collection of Vashti's existing early recordings, the album is divided across two discs and features 25 tracks - mostly rescued from a number of old acetates and quarter-inch tapes Vashti's brother John had found in his attic a few years ago.

Review: Annelies Monsere's Mares album takes us deep into the contemporary underground of Belgium as she serves up some fascinating and experimental new ambient and modern classical compositions. They are raw and deep and draw on plenty of the traditions of European folk. The album was written between 2016 and 2022 and is full of contrasts - adventurous new synth sounds, organic folk moods, brooding minimalism and complex harmonies. It was made using the guitar and piano and was conceived as "adding similar layers upon each other with (slightly) different hues". It's a beguiling new work littered with her own vocals which make it all the more impactful.

Plunging their honest indie-folk sound in natural rooms and tape recorder hiss, this album certainly isn't one for the steely of heart. Its themes of impermanence, vulnerability, guardedness, and existentialism will all beguile, as you the listener choose either to bask in the pair's saxophone playing, or revel in the grin-and-bear-it nature of their lyrics. One thing's for certain: To Be A Cloud will help you on your way to finding the silver lining.

Review: Record Store Day sometimes gets a lot of criticism for the sheer volume of re-releases people didn't seem to ask for. In the case of Visions of Dawn, nothing could be further from the truth. A forgotten, or at least long-lost Brazilian acid folk masterpiece, the record was first recorded in Paris circa 1976, but then quickly seemed to vanish into the ether many of the tracks sound like they emerged from.
In 2009, it was 'rediscovered' and immediately became a cult classic - again. Melding samba, Bossa Nova, trippy moods and gorgeous instrumentation, it has the ability to make you feel transported and transformed, as though offering an earshot of what another world might sound like. Or at least the other side of our own. Listen and not be transfixed, we challenge you.

Review: Once Again We Are The Children Of The Sun is a compilation of rare and obscure psychedelic rock, folk and jazz from all over the world. While little thematic centrality is present, the common thread between these selections is that they can surely be classified as wheat, not chaff, thanks to the curatorial power of one Paul Hillery.
