Review: Half a century old and still kicking raw ass like it's still 1972, Alice Cooper's School's Out gets a deluxe reissue treatment befitting of such an iconic album. On this whopping triple-vinyl edition, Rhino have had the original album remastered so it's sounding better than ever, but of course there's heaps of bonus material to enjoy as well. You get the single versions of 'School's Out' and 'Gutter Cat vs. The Jets', an alternate version of 'Alma Mater' and an early demo of 'Elected'. On top of all that is a recording of the band's concert in Miami in 1972, recorded just before they stepped into the studio to lay down the album.

Review: Alive Cooper's 1971 classic Killer was his fourth studio album during a truly unstoppable period for the Detroit rocker. He clocked up consecutive platinum-selling albums as well as five Top 40 hits such 'I'm Eighteen,' 'School's Out' and 'No More Mr. Nice Guy.' This reissue comes alongside a reissue of the 1972 album School's Out and has been newly remastered with the addition of rare recordings and previously unreleased live performances. This one topped out at #21 on the Billboard albums chart and featured hit singles such as 'Under My Wheels' and 'Be My Lover' as well as a prog-rock-inspired epic in the shape of 'Halo Of Flies.'

Review: Tyr was Black Sabbath's second for the IRS label and their first of the 1990s - the entire spate of albums from this period is now being reissued and this one heavily leans into Norse mythological themes, perhaps unintentionally playing up to the black metallic aspect of their name (it is indeed extremely atmospheric for a heavy metal record). Lyrics concerning obscure Nordic gods and ascension to Valhalla temper this solo-heavy monument of a record.

Distinguishing itself from its seminal predecessor, Morningrise, by restricting all tracks to below the ten-minute mark (an accomplishment for a group notorious for their eschewing of brevity), the expansive tracklist which includes fan favourites such as 'Demon Of The Fall', would cement Opeth as leaders of a new artistic nuanced form of prog-death which they have continued to refine over the ensuing decades since.

Review: The long-awaited, much anticipated, eleventh full-length from thrash metal titans, Metallica, will serve as their first full-length since 2016's underrated, Hardwired To Self-Destruct, and continues the damage (inc.) control mission the band have been on ever since, St. Anger soured fan palettes and expectation almost two full decades ago. While, Death Magnetic, played it somewhat safe, there's been a notable element of soul-searching over the last number of years, in an effort to recapture the breakneck thrash fury that originally elevated the Metallica brand to genre staples. From the blistering, lead single, 'Lux aeterna', alone, it's evident that James Hetfield and co have regrouped at the source (their 1982 debut, Kill 'Em All), to reimagine their dynamic metallic machinations as the seasoned veterans they've effortlessly moulded into; promising their purest, most revitalised return to form yet. Luckily, '72 Seasons', won't take as long as its cryptic title to materialise.

Review: By the time their stellar debut full-length Orchid landed in 1995, Swedish prog-death giants Opeth were already well into the recording process for their transcendent sophomore effort. Morningrise would re-establish the group as one of the most forward thinking outfits in the Scandinavian metal scene due to its sonic embracing of more melodious and progressive soundscapes which would become a vital component of their creative output going forward. The last project with drummer Anders Nordin and bassist Johan De Farfalla; the material here is as atmospheric as it is overwhelming, challenging listener attention and patience with its weighty, conceptual dirges, while their most epic piece to date, the 20-minute, 'Black Rose Immortal', has become an integral pillar of prog-metal grandiosity in the decades since.

Review: Swedish death metal gang Entombed made an immediate impact with the release of their debut album all the way back in 1980. It is a soot-black verse with plenty of Satanic overtones, not least the title which refers to the Left-Hand Path belief system, which is itself discussed in Anton LaVey's book The Satanic Bible. The album is defined by its buzzsaw guitar tones and hardcore drums, with heavily detuned riffs getting thrashed out on each and every tune. Distortion also abounds and when you add in the guttural slurs of the vocals it all adds up to a proper death metal classic.

Review: As one of the leading lights in European prog metal, Opeth have come a long way since they first appeared in the mid 90s, but as with all totemic bands, it's fascinating to travel back in time and remember where it all began. For Opeth, it started with Orchid, which was signed by Candlelight without the band even having recorded a formal demo. The strength of their potential shone through from rehearsal sessions, and the resulting record showed off their prowess in two-part guitar harmonies, Celtic rhythms and sweeping, epic arrangements punctuated with moments of powerful metal. Now Spinefarm have reissued it as a double LP pressed on red, translucent vinyl - one for collectors and newcomers to the world of Opeth alike.

Review: Self-branded as "Portland Sleaze Speed", Leathurbitch deal in a very much retro-fitted form of 80s indebted speed metal, but whereas their 2019 debut full-length Into The Night focused on the eccentricities of glam, Shattered Vanity re-establishes the group in a far heavier maelstrom, complete with face-melting dual guitar solos, over-the-top vocal blowouts from frontman Joel Starr, and a noticeable lyrical turn towards horror and the macabre. The bitch is well and truly back as the band have so succinctly put and offer a uniquely heavy yet still endlessly entertaining reimagining of the cheesiest of metal eras.

Review: While the Mike Patton camp usually boils down to Faith No More fans and Mr. Bungle purists (apart from the one weirdo who still tries to claim Fantomas is the one), much of the material from Tomahawk is often left out of the discussion, and that's simply a crime against musical humanity. A supergroup of sorts made up of Patton, Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard), John Stanier (Helmet, Battles) and Kevin Rutmanis (Melvins), the four-piece tapped into one another's sonic backgrounds to conjure a project equal parts groovy, heavy, sexy and malevolent. Following on from their exceptional self-titled serial killer concept debut, Mit Gas was the audible response to an ill-fated tour supporting Tool where the band were constantly booed due to their material not resonating with the crowd. Yes, you read that right, a band with the above members was heckled at Tool shows. Focusing on crafting a more experimental yet cohesive follow up, the group would look to more retro avant-garde inspiration from the likes of Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd, and the resulting collection isn't your daddy's prog rock (but isn't far off either).

Before their turn towards more accessible prog-rock fare, Leviathan proved an uncompromising and beastly work, combining elements of sludge, groove and psychedelia into a battering maelstrom of infectious heft. A detailed concept album based upon Herman Melville's literary classic Moby Dick, the material plumbs the depths of Captain Ahab's obsessive search for the great white whale, in turn boasting some of the group's most integral contributions from the dismal anthem 'Blood & Thunder' to the trudging bedlam of 'Iron Tusk'.

Review: Originally released in 1993, Transcend the Rubicon was the third full-length from Birmingham death metals heroes Benediction, whilst serving as their second album with vocalist Dave Ingram following the departure of Barney Greenway to focus solely on Napalm Death. Ingram himself would later front Bolt Thrower from the late 90s to early 00's, but his tenure with Benediction had been utterly embraced following his introduction on the band's preceding The Grand Leveller from 1992. Refined, vicious, and brimming with technical composition, Transcend the Rubicon would establish their core line-up and vision for the remainder of that decade, and it's of little wonder that the band still hold such a special black in the black hearts of death metal fans, both home and abroad. Reissued for the first time in years, and suitably fitting now that Ingram is fronting the group yet again since their 2019 reformation, what better time to revisit a staple from the early UK death metal scene which has only become more vital in the decades since.
