Review: Oga For Oga is the second solo album by Swedish musician Elin Engstrom, who records as Loopsel, and is also one half of Monokultur. The album is a collection of atmospheric and experimental songs that blend guitar, vocals, synths and field recordings, owing something to the recently popularised sensibility of "gothic folk", with the lines between acoustic and synthetic heard on standout pieces like 'Svart' and 'Hjarta' thoroughly blurred. Review: Several new reissues of Current 93's music come via Cashen's Gap, the home imprint of said industrial supergroup - which infamously includes musical iconoclast David Tibet among its ranks. Night At The Four Winds Bar Maldoror is one of their albums, released in 2023 - it's a complete reworking of their 1986 album Live At Bar Maldoror, with the original album playing forwards in the right-hand channel and backwards in the left-hand channel. Its 15 tracks explore themes of death, apocalypse and transcendence, using a mix of industrial, folk and ambient sounds. Don't miss it, as it's one of the band's many curiosities, and is a star example of what made the band so lauded as among Britain's weirdest acts in the 80s and 90s.

Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: Squid return to Warp with O Monolith, amping up the indie festival favourites' new penchant for fast, hardcore jangle-jams peppered with electronic glitchings and odd subject matters. Bright Green Field laid the formula at our feet, but we're certain it'll be O Monolith that best represents Ollie Judge and co.'s newly impassioned, kooky sound. Still, the playful song structures and exclaimed vocals remain present. New highlights like 'Undergrowth' capture it best: raucous blary horn sections, frightening choruses, and a sound that evokes that of a hellish circus, all make this one a rather enigmatic, intelligent listen. We'd expect nothing less from Squid.

Review: Anyone who has watched the documentary 'The Sound Of Progress' will know how truly bonkers Current 93 were, and presumably still are. The British experimental group are currently in the process of either reissuing or reinterpreting several of their former LPs and live shows - one of these being Great Aleph Lies Dreaming. This LP is a so-called "ReDreaming" of their 2009 album Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain, and by and large contains an increasingly weird and effected sound compared to the more straightforward original - in turn drew on tropes ranging from the apocalypse to doom metal and stoner rock.

Review: In many ways Spiderland is lucky to exist., Slint weren't exactly the most avid studio band in the world, only recording two full length albums during the five years in which they were properly active. They also disbanded around the time this record was released - 1991 - perhaps even shortly before, which could have scuppered any plans for their difficult second even after they managed to emerge from a recording facility with enough tracks.
But what tracks they are. Spiderland is rightly considered an absolute landmark, an LP that captures the spirit of rock 'n' roll in transition. Leaving one decade behind, and the hardcore punk that had dominated the underground guitar scene, while still retaining those ethics, it has one foot in grunge, another in experimental, another in garage and a fourth somewhere else. Enough limbs to mark it out as a real mutant.

Review: It feels like every couple of years a new reissue of Kikagaku Moyo's magical 2013 album Forest of Lost Children comes around, but we are not moaning. This group is "a musical union between five free spirits" or in less poetic terms, band founders Go Kurosawa (on drums and vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (on guitar and vocals) plus bass by and Akira also on guitar. Their sound is as unique as any, with psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock and more all collided into one another on an album that keeps you on your toes and guessing at what might come next even within each track, let alone across the whole album. If you're a new interested party this is a great primer for what the band is all about.

Review: Is the world ready for the return of Pere Ubu? Does it even matter? What's important is the legendary post-everything provocateurs are back, led by David Thomas and packing a line-up of lifers, long timers and someone Thomas met down the pub. Their last album on Cherry Red was 2019's The Long Goodbye, and yet they're back again with more of their deconstructed but eternally kicking avant-garde rock. There's a comforting familiarity to the angular squall of the guitars, but it's not an album trapped in the past as is evident on the rowdy cover of The Osmonds' 'Crazy Horses'. Genius coming at you from unexpected angles, which is exactly how it should be.

It's certainly atmospheric and there's something about their sunny-sounding guitar that seemed appropriate to a book that, although published in 1927, didn't become popular in America until the 1960s."
So says writer and director Gerard McInulty about The Durutti Column, the group he drafted for the soundtrack to his 12 Stars group production of Treatise On The Steppenwolf, first staged in Glasgow in 2003. This is what that sounds like - call it what you like, essentially it's just beautiful music to captivate and enthral, without insisting on itself - and you also get an additional trio of extended movements that were used to score the Human Avatars art installation at MOSI, Manchester, in 2005. Review: While the Mike Patton camp usually boils down to Faith No More fans and Mr. Bungle purists (apart from the one weirdo who still tries to claim Fantomas is the one), much of the material from Tomahawk is often left out of the discussion, and that's simply a crime against musical humanity. A supergroup of sorts made up of Patton, Duane Denison (The Jesus Lizard), John Stanier (Helmet, Battles) and Kevin Rutmanis (Melvins), the four-piece tapped into one another's sonic backgrounds to conjure a project equal parts groovy, heavy, sexy and malevolent. Following on from their exceptional self-titled serial killer concept debut, Mit Gas was the audible response to an ill-fated tour supporting Tool where the band were constantly booed due to their material not resonating with the crowd. Yes, you read that right, a band with the above members was heckled at Tool shows. Focusing on crafting a more experimental yet cohesive follow up, the group would look to more retro avant-garde inspiration from the likes of Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd, and the resulting collection isn't your daddy's prog rock (but isn't far off either).

Review: Just when you thought it was a certainty that all the great, impossible to define bands had found their way to your playlist, along come Algiers. For the newcomers, let's just say you're in for a wild and unfettered treat. To the already-committed, props for paying attention to a group that have quietly - recognition wise at least - been rising to the top of the relevant and aurally groundbreaking list since 2015. Hailing from Atlanta, there's an undercurrent of Deep South rock 'n' roll and blues-tinged grit to things here, but so much more is happening knowing where to start is gonna be difficult. Electronica, gospel, punk, jazz, hip hop, apocalyptic prophecies, and political messaging somehow both obtuse and poetic. In short, Algiers make the vast majority of noise-makers look and sound benign.

Review: Washington, D.C. post-hardcore noisemakers Unwound came up in the early 1990s with a DIY ethos and a penchant for making every instrument screech. The 1995 album Unwound was intended as their core statement of intent (not to be confused with their first ever cassette of the same name), finding them inspired divinely by tropes from krautrock and jazz. For a punk band, there are a relatively high number of wide power chords throughout this one, contrasting to the raw, centred and raspy vocals from Justin Trosper. A monumental achievement, filled with pace changes and soul-ripping drops into oblivion.

Review: La Perversita is something of a seminal French underground record first released back in 1979 but still sounds way ahead of its time today. It's a concept record and collage of found sounds, guitars and synths that was designed to "sublimate sexual perversion." It comes from Jacques Pasquier who was the founder of S.C.O.P.A./Invisible Records and a key part of the alternative scene that was rife in Paris in the 70s with producer Hector Zazou amongst other creative talents and outsiders. This remastered reissue comes with extensive liner notes from people in and around the project at the time.

Review: Jonnine Standish delivers arguably her most intimate solo portrait yet, naming her latest project after her mother's maiden name - "the most haunted word I know". Maritz was allegedly born after Standish explored an abandoned high school in the hills of Melbourne, having found several bits of spectral musical detritus there including a glockenspiel, recorder, a metronome, and an "oddly tuned wooden string instrument" of unknown make. This sense of contextual musical salvaging lends the entire project a mood of 'clinging on', as Jonnine delivers her thinnest, folkiest and least electronic record to date for DJ Sundae's label.
