Review: Now in their second decade as a band, it seems almost unthinkable that anyone should not have long-since fallen head over heels for Detroit's Protomartyr. The post-punk set stormed out of the starting blocks amid a niche but very notable resurgence in the sound, but years later have managed to continue staying relatively true to their remit, swerving any and every opportunity to reinvent in the hope of finding a spot on the next bandwagon, while still managing to avoid falling into repetitive pitfalls. Ever imaginative, in many ways Formal Growth In the Desert is their most uncompromising ode to the style we associate them with, and certainly reflects how close they can come to starting a full blow riot in your front room. Nevertheless, it's also packed full of tender moments, not least on closer 'The Author', an ode to iconic singer Joe Casey's late mother. A powerhouse band returning with a powerhouse record, even in its softest seconds.

Review: Witch were one of the first bands in Zambia to get their music recorded and even secure an international record deal back in the 70s. Into the 80s, they blazed a trail of psych rock infused with African rhythms, and a reissue on Now Again some 10 years back helped bring renewed attention back to the pioneering sound Emmanuel Chanda and the rest of the band had forged. Now Chanda and fellow Witch veteran Patrick Mwondela have been back in the Zambian studio where they recorded 1975's Lazy Bones, except now they're backed up by a band including Nic Mauskovic of The Mauskovic Dance Band and Dutch studio whizz Jacco Gardner, making incendiary fusion music steeped in the band's psych heritage, but equally moving forwards in exciting new ways .

Review: Today & Tomorrow is yet another superb album from the Sault collective headed up by Dean Josiah Cover AKA Info. Not much else is known about them but there sure is a hell of a lot of music to get stuck into. This album was dropped as one of five last year - alongside 11, AIIR, Earth and Untitled (God)) - all for free and all on the same day. That is a mad thing to do and you might think they can't all be good albums, but they are. This is another lo-fi soul masterpiece from one of the best bands of our time.

Review: A rock n' roll compilation with a twist, 28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley's Jukebox is a brand new selector's V/A LP from the 1990s Britpop figurehead and former member of the band Longpigs and Pulp. Diving deep into his personal collection here, this album reflects Hawley's absolute dedication to a pastime few may already know him for: slowly amassing a mammoth selection of 7" records in the mode of garage rock and skiffle. Many are instrumentals, flaunting Hawley's ear for a sound that goes beyond just lyricism or theme. With star cuts from the likes of The Timekeepers and Bobby Gentry, certainly do not miss this is if you're the the right kind of British rock obsessive.

Review: Australian combo Tama Impala has always been hard to pin down, with their two studio albums to date displaying a keen desire to capture a trippy, psychedelic vibe, whilst refusing to settle on one easy-to-categorize sound. Currents, their fourth album, continues this trend, toning down some of the psychedelic rock elements in favour of nods to blue-eyed soul, woozy dream-pop, cheery summery pop (see the radio hit in waiting "The Less I Know The Better"), and even the head-nodding rhythms of hip hop (which, incidentally, prove the perfect backing for the morphine pop wooziness of "Past Life"). It's a blend that re-casts the band as baked, inter-dimensional travellers with a neat line in enveloping, sun-kissed downtempo pop.

Review: From the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, Brazil's population suffered at the hands of the brutal dictatorship of the Fifth Republic, arising from a coup at the hands of the country's armed forces with support from the US administration of the time. Human rights abuses, institutionalised torture and extrajudicial killings were par for the course of a regime, supported by religious and anti-Communist sections of society. At the same time, the domestic avant garde music scene was merging with the mainstream birth the Tropicalia arts movement, but this wasn't the only sound that was pushing back against the corridors of power. Forged from rock, folk, psychedelia and traditional Brazilian rhythms, while Som Imaginario aren't always considered part of that scene, they shared values and, in many ways, an approach to pushing sonic boundaries. This 1976 live album speaks volumes about the creative freedoms expressed as a form of protest against militarised conformity.

Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: The Doors' Lizard In The Studio album includes the only known version of 'The Celebration Of The Lizard', a performance piece by the American rock greats. It has lyrics written by lead singer Jim Morrison and music by the band and was composed as a series of poems with both spoken word and sung lyrics. Alongside that one track which takes up the whole of the A-side are studio outtakes and demos that were recorded from around the same period. This reissue comes on purple vinyl and is a must for collectors and fans alike.

Review: It feels like every couple of years a new reissue of Kikagaku Moyo's magical 2013 album Forest of Lost Children comes around, but we are not moaning. This group is "a musical union between five free spirits" or in less poetic terms, band founders Go Kurosawa (on drums and vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (on guitar and vocals) plus bass by and Akira also on guitar. Their sound is as unique as any, with psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock and more all collided into one another on an album that keeps you on your toes and guessing at what might come next even within each track, let alone across the whole album. If you're a new interested party this is a great primer for what the band is all about.

Review: Is the world ready for the return of Pere Ubu? Does it even matter? What's important is the legendary post-everything provocateurs are back, led by David Thomas and packing a line-up of lifers, long timers and someone Thomas met down the pub. Their last album on Cherry Red was 2019's The Long Goodbye, and yet they're back again with more of their deconstructed but eternally kicking avant-garde rock. There's a comforting familiarity to the angular squall of the guitars, but it's not an album trapped in the past as is evident on the rowdy cover of The Osmonds' 'Crazy Horses'. Genius coming at you from unexpected angles, which is exactly how it should be.

Review: Originally established as an outlet for founder and core member John Dwyer to explore home recordings, The Oh Sees soon grew into a full live band, who quickly picked up acclaim not just for their excellent musical abilities - straddling garage, post punk, noise, art rock and more - but also aesthetic wit, prolificacy, and deft ability to keep switching things up without looking like they were lost.
In 2013, it was announced that a hiatus was coming, but this lasted very little time at all - a record followed in 2014, and the group toured as a three-piece, sans Dwyer, for a little while. He then rejoined in 2015, driving that when something is good it's hard to say no. Skip to today, and they've released well over 20 LPs, but while studio work is quality, it's the live shows that really make an impact. Here's one, which proves exactly what we mean.

The great composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalists crafted several seminal albums that all take you deep into gorgeous worlds of jazz, funk and library music with narratives you'd expect in film scores and emotion in high supply. Heavy Axe might be one of his best and so this welcome reissue is a timely reminder of that. Its sweeping strings, grand horns and orchestral arrangements ebb and flow with great drama and absorbing artistry so stick it on loud and give yourself over to its rare pleasures.

Review: By the mid-90s The Cramps had settled comfortably into their position as the most exalted potentates of psychobilly in the known universe, both ambassadors for the 50s origins of the sound and brilliantly dedicated to keeping it alive. There's just no way to fake the approach Lux Interior and Poison Ivy took to life as a band and couple and it's all here for your raucous, hard-drinkin' pleasure on Flamejob. Smutty to the last, depraved like the innermost thoughts of anyone worth their salt, it's The Cramps at their beastly best, repressed up here by the always reliable Music On Vinyl and sounding better than ever.

Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

Review: Fans of The Grateful Dead listen up: you should have been taking note of Rose City Band before now. Don't worry, though, this self-titled from a blues-tipped troupe - who clearly understand the joys of psychedelia - is the outfit's debut. As such while you've missed a bit, there's hopefully far more to come. When it comes to outfits like Rose City Band it's easy to simply reel off a list of people the pack have elements of, partly because accurate definitions don't come easy when there are shades of garage rock, tripped out roll, and even some hallucinogenic take on country and western swoon at play. And that's just on the appropriately titled "Wandering Feeling". You could well nod to Moon Duo, Little Feat and the aforementioned Dead, alongside Cosmic Americana, of course. References aside, RCB rank among the finest making this fare, so prepare to get lost in a kaleidoscopic road trip.

Review: In the forty-two years since the release of Ege Bamyasi, no-one has done as much to blend the spheres of experimental rock music and the avant-garde than Can, whilst also maintaining a hip-shaking primal pulse and delivering a radiant wash of kaleidoscopic sound that defies classification. Ege Bamyasi still stands as one of their crowning achievements, and one whose spooky reverberations have made their presence felt throughout a mighty chunk of the rock and dance music of the decades that have followed. An otherworldly masterclass for the ages.

Review: It's not that fans of King Gizzard never expected this from the band's 15th long form outing, but rather anyone who stumbled upon the alliterated outfit on their last offering - "Fishing For Fishes" - is likely to be dumbstruck. Forget the life-affirming blues hues of that record. "Infest The Rats' Nest" sees the band at their heaviest - they are barely audible here beneath the din and cacophony of thrash metal. Exploring Earth's fate in the age of environmental degradation and pollution through "Superbug"'s slow chug and low, bellowed chorus, the driving riffs of "Mars For The Rich", the intensity of "Perihelion" and the screeching chords of "Venusian 2", the album's 9 tracks are as legit as anything this sub-genre has thrown at us since inception in the 1980s. More astute fans will have heard nuances of this on 2017's LP, "Murder of the Universe" and various manic musical explosions in Gizzard's back catalogue. "Infest The Rats' Nest" is a constant barrage of unrelenting energy from start to finish, and quite possibly their strongest album yet.

Review: In recent years we've had some exceptional examples of what you might call "narco rock 'n' roll". The sort of records that sound excellent when you're high, but seem to lose some of their potency - or relevance - when you're listing through headphones at your desk in the middle of a working day. Darkside's latest is, unsurprisingly, very much of the 'baked goods' ilk, but there's a delightfully pop-friendly element at play here that means you can get a lot out of the experience without having to have your own induced experience.

Musically it's actually relatively conservative stuff, considering the artists involved. Nicolas Jaar is a bonafide electronic visionary who has been pushing boundaries for well over a decade, while Dave Harrington is one of the most forward thinking multi-instrumentalists you'll ever hear. Together, though, they create a space that's strange but also familiar, like rediscovering forgotten albums from the early-1970s psyche heyday.

Review: Tame Impala's breakthrough album 'Lonerism' celebrates its tenth anniversary with a special edition reissue. Through tracks like 'Elephant', 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards' and 'Endors Toi', the album is known for introducing psychedelia to a new generation of hungry music fans in the early 2010s, and features Kevin Parker's distinctive falsetto vocals and intricate guitarwork throughout. The reissue here includes various bonuses, demos and "assorted sketches", casting renewed light on an important record for both the music-loving public, and an Aussie band/project destined for stardom.

Review: Psychedelic rock legend Graham Day has stayed active throughout 2010s and beyond, but he's not revisited his famous band The Gaolers for over 14 years. That all changes with Reflections In The Glass - which despite its convincingly retro mod sound, is actually a brand new album. Ten stomping cuts of hard psych rock all resonate at similar tempos, resolute in their twanging solos and lyrical ruminations on abandonment, guilt, atonement and lost causes.

Review: Wewantsounds have got a first-ever reissue of Meiko Kaji's Hajiki Uta album with original artwork and new liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha who actually spoke to the artist for the occasion. Film fans will recognise 'Urami Bushi' which was the theme song for the Female Prisoner Scorpion series which was used in Kill Bill Vol 2, while 'Onna No Jumon' was also the theme song for Female Prisoner Scorpion - Jailhouse 41 film. The rest of the record features atmospheric moments and sombre singing over slow-burning grooves, some funkier sounds like 'Hitori Kaze' and plenty of innovative sounds in between.
