Good Love (reissue)
Cat: BK 051. Rel: 01 Jun 23
Good Love (vocal) (3:56)
Good Love (instrumental) (4:33)
Review: Proper boogie-funk stylee from Rome Jeffries, first recorded in 1983 as a paean to confident, smooth loving. The sultry mood of the song is backed by its cut-up claps, bouncy synth piques, and weighty veneer, which all went on to contribute to its later status as a sought-after diggers' slab. As much is ever-more evidenced on the instrumental B-side, which has an unprecedented - dare we say cheek-slapping - grit to it.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (3:39)
Review: Founded by Roy Ayers in Cincinnati in 1976 as a vehicle for his songs and productions - though, interestingly, he was never a member of the band RAMP recorded and released one album, 1977's sun-soaked jazz-funk opus, Come Into Knowledge. This fantastic 45 from South Street Records' new South Street Soul offshoot showcases two of the set's most admired and in-demand cuts. Edwin Birdsong and William Allen share production credits with Ayers on 'Daylight', a shuffling, dewy-eyed, afternoon-ready delight whose slow groove, meandering synth solos and blissful female vocals recall another Ayers' classic 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine'. Fittingly, RAMP's fine, soft-focus take on that tune can be found on side B.

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (2:57)
Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Flying Fish dub) (2:57)
Review: Here's a cover which can't fail to please a huge crowd, as Betty Black takes on Eurythmics' eternal 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. Black has been hitting her stride as a modern day soul diva after moving on from her accomplished roots voicing some iconic UK garage tunes, and her cover of 'Cry Me A River' is no joke either. Backed up by The Family Fortune and bringing an undeniable 60s sass to her performance, she makes the track her own. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, the B-side has the slightly edited, dubbed out 'Work Out' version for when you want to work up a sweat.

I'll Be Around (3:49)
I'll Be Around (dub vocal) (3:46)
Review: Otis Gayle and Robert Dubwise Brown come together for this superb new 7" on Vortex Japan. It's a glorious cover of an already glorious original tune. Their version of 'I'll Be Around' leaves the originals feel-good melodies in place but works them into a lover's rock rhythm with gentle but sunny percussion and a heartfelt re-sung vocal. It's buttery smooth and good for the soul. On the flip is a dub vocal version that is even more laid back and deep, with fleshy bottom ends and wiggling bass.

I Wanna Be Where You Are (Unedited mix) (6:05)
I Want You (Jam - alternate mix) (4:51)
Review: Marvin Gaye's catalogue is jam-packed with gems and so it's not hard to pick a couple for remix treatment. This one is a particularly nice pair of alternative mixes that find the Detroit legend at his very best, taken from the Deluxe Edition of his masterful 1976 album I Want You, mixed by Kevin Reeves and now remastered by Ellen Fitton but never, before now, appearing on 12" before. First up on the A-side is 'I Wanna Be Where You Are', a cover of a Michael Jackson hit beautifully stretched from its original 1:17 to over six minutes. ''I Want You' (alternate version), meanwhile, introduced something of a shift in Gaye's sound towards more disco.

Keep On Swinging (3:11)
Hope (3:39)
Review: Carlton Jumel Smith earned himself the title Mr Soul, being one of NYC's foremost exponents of a faithful sound which keeps the Motown flame alive. Having released a couple of singles on Timmion last year as well as linking up with Dojo Cuts on Colemine, now Smith is stepping out on Mocambo with the riotous party starter 'Keep On Swinging', a heated affair with sassy brass, overdriven guitar licks and the man himself holding it down with a killer vocal turn. 'Hope' on the flip is a funkier number which calls to mind classic Curtis Mayfield, not least thanks to that sprightly percussion section. Great modern soul music which knows where it's coming from.

She's In LA
She's In LA (feat Young Gun Silver Fox) (4:17)
She's In LA (feat Young Gun Silver Fox - SoCal instrumental) (4:17)
Review: Described by Legere Recordings as a 'widescreen instrumental pop anthem soaked in summer sun', 'She's In LA' sees experienced Welsh musician (and former Colorama front man) Carwyn Ellis daydream about moving to the City of Angels with a little help from Shawn Lee and Andy Platts ALA Young Gun Silver Fox. Authentically Californian in vibe and execution, with Ellis's weary lead vocals recalling the likes of Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagen above a sun-soaked, synth-sporting West Coast groove. It's utterly gorgeous and undeniably life-affirming, as is the vocal-free instrumental take showcased on side B. A future Balearic favourite, no doubt.

Ha-Ya (Eternal Life) (5:02)
Review: The one and only Mr K sure does know how to cook up a masterful edit. Here he heads into gospel territory with the latest 7" in Most Excellent Unlimited's collaborations with him. Both of these tunes are appearing on 7" vinyl for the first time here and have long been staples of the sets of Danny Krivit. His 'Churchapella' edit of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer' is as holy and steamy as it gets with the whole thing sure to uplift and energise any crowd. On the backside is a superb edit of the Clark Sisters slinky rare groove gem 'Ha-Ya (Eternal Life).' It's a slightly slower tune but one that makes just as much of an impact.

Wendy Walker - "We've Got One" (4:06)
Legal Assault - "Nice & Slow" (feat Dan-Elle) (4:30)
Review: .Athens of the North has been a buy-on-sight for years. The Edinburgh-based soul, disco and funk reissue label rarely ever misses and does some of the most tireless digging in the game as this latest 7" shows. It is a spotlight on one of the best tunes made by Anthony Brightly while working with a young Wendy Walker. 'We've Got One' is dub tinged slow-motion funk with a glorious vocal, and on the flip is Legal Assault's 'Nice & Slow'. This one is also from the Sir George label and a sensuous deep soul and lo-fi gem with steamy vocals and lush chords.

Review: Thee Sacred Souls made a big splash with their lovely debut album last year after a great run of singles. They came on the Penrose label in Spain and that is where they return now with a new limited 7". 'Running Away' opens up in frantic but soul fuelled fashion with quick and slick drums and gorgeous vocal falsettos up top. Things slow down and take a sentimental turn on the flip with 'Love Comes Easy', featuring aching vocal yearns and expressive sax lines heightening the mood. Tow more gems from this ever more prominent outfit.

Review: This naive street soul gem is so rare, that - prior to its repress here by Heels & Souls - it was barely accessible anywhere save for a potential L500 re-flogging on eBay. Luckily, those with their best interests at heart do the glorious work of repressing the tracks 'Over You' and 'Shining Through' - as well as their slightly different dance mixes - to EP-length wax. You're lucky to be in the presence of some quintessential street soul here, featuring detuned vocals, crude plodding drums and digital strings that evoke shafts of evening light on city concrete. And if you're ever suffering a bad breakup, 'Over You' is the harsh remedy.

Review: Toronto-based 45 Label Eastside Edits is back with more of that heart-melting musical goodness for a fifth time. These two pearlers both rework classic samples into new and seductive funky beat frameworks. 'Second Nature' has twanging and funky bass and smooth rolling grooves with a laidback vibe all topped off with a distincitve hook. On the other side, 'Tapp Dance' has slower, deeper neo-soul vibes - two very tasteful reworks for sure.

Review: This is a limited gatefold translucent blue swirl vinyl and an indie exclusive version of super soul group The Ironsides's new album. The band teased it with a 7" on their home label Colemine back in October which more than got us excited. The whole record was laid down at Transistor Sound Studios in the North Bay Area of California and is full of more of the life-enriching sounds you might already know and love the band for. It is a great fusion of classic psych-soul sounds with sweeping orchestral arrangements and is inspired by library music and soundtracks from the 60s and 70s. Guess including Colemine artists Kelly Finnigan and Monophonics appears to help make this most lovely of records even more special.

Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come (reissue)
Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come (part 1)
Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come (part 2)
Review: Eight years ago, Super Weird Substance unveiled a cover of Bessie Banks' classic 'Don't You Worry Baby The Best Is Yet To Come' - a hybrid nu-disco/classic soul interpretation that was credited to The Reynolds (twin sisters according to press releases circulated at the time), but produced and mixed by Greg Wilson and regular studio buddy Peza. This timely reissue marks the first time the track has appeared on a 45. Just like many classic soul sevens, it features 'Part 1' and 'Part 2' versions, which seem to be edits of the near nine-minute 'club mix' that appeared on the original 12" release. Both are great, with the Reynolds' gorgeous vocals being joined by rubbery synth-bass, simmering synth-strings, tasteful synth-horns and unfussy, floor-friendly drums.

You Can Count On Me (4:06)
Review: Yet another addition to the pile of new music from a Penrose soul singer who has been active since the mid 1970s and has not stopped since, Lee Fields' latest 7" single 'Waiting On The Sidelines' is a paean to pining, a song for sad hollowness. The star sings heartbreakingly of having been reduced to 'waiting on the sidelines' while the object of his affection goes off gallivanting with someone else. It's a beautiful new one from the singer-songwriter and producer, effortlessly showing off his undying penchant for the 7"s format and neatly following up his 2022 album Sentimental Fool.

Review: Thomas Blanchot has been casting a spell with his sun-soaked reggae renditions as Mato for a long time now. He's back on his regular stomping ground of Stix with a beautiful version of Roy Ayers' evergreen 'What You Won't Do For Love', with Ethel Lindsey taking on the role as singer to complement Blanchot's sweet and easy riddim. It's a tune primed to greet the warmer weather, staying faithful to the original while giving it a fresh spin. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, we know full well you're going to love flipping it over for the consummate dub version on the B-side.

Greg himself joins up with Paulo Fulci as Divine Situation to add their own special fire to the already hot originals. Their first Downlow rework rides on some psyched-out guitar lines with the chunky, percussive rhythms riding rough below. Then, on the flip, the Maceo's dub is more smooth, streamlined and cosmic with its widescreen synth lines.

Review: A fresh and rather unusual pink wax 7" fromCanadian DJ and producer Eddie C, 'Nite Moves' shows off the artist's precision editry with eclectic production nuances and riffy glue. The A comes through with lyrically-confounding sampledelic soul flair, while the instrumental B 'Smokey Bay' grows more Balearic as it embers away. This EP truly is skilfully done, as we can't track down the original tracks Eddie's used, so let's hope your ear's curious enough revel in, and even rise to the challenging of identifying, a mysterious sample.

'Days Like This' by Shaun Escoffrey is a proper good slice of modern house music and it gets remixed here by top dogs Spen & Karizma, MJ Cole and DJ Spinna. This reissue of the 2002 original has been remastered by Phil Kinrade at Alchemy Mastering with the new remixes including the first-ever vinyl appearance of the MJ Cole contribution. Their second instalment here comes in the form of a laid-back, electro-balearic affair replete with several layers of bass guitar, lolling synth and acoustic-mimicking percs. Review: Bobby Thurston's 'You Got What It Takes' is a soaring, spiralling disco classic whose , squelchy synth-bass and highly addictive horn refrains are not only instantly familiar, but also never fail to raise the temperature out on the dancefloor. This coloured vinyl reissue, released as part of Unidisc's ongoing 40th anniversary series, offers up both the original 12" mixes (vocal and instrumental), as well as a fresh, stretched-out rework from re-edit master the Reflex that's worth the admission price on its own. He naturally makes the most of the original's key elements, building up the groove before unleashing Thurston's vocals, the celebratory horn riffs and - most pleasingly - the track's spacey, life-affirming synth solo.

The current lineup features Leiffer with Tony Mahoney, Jr. Bailey and A.J. Franklin and this new 7" offers two tunes from their tried and tested repertoire. First is a contemporary rework of William DeVaughn's US 70's soul classic that Massive Attack sampled so well, namely 'Be Thankful', and on the flip is a version of Yabby You's roots reggae cut 'Deliver Me' from the 1970s. Review: Fingier Records is a new Acid Jazz sub-label that is back with a brand new 7" from The Kevin Fingier Collective. It's a real dance floor heater that is perfectly aged and authentic as it mixes up Northern Soul and r&b with driving guitar rhythms and steamy piano chords. The horns are killer but the vocal is the icing on the cake. On the flip things get Latin flavoured with the bossa-tinged mod jazz of 'The Great Akerman' which is defined by lush flute and organ vamps. This is a great taster of the full length to come from The Kevin Fingier Collective.

Review: Originally released in 1983 on Evergreen Records, the D.I.T. Band's split 7" 'You Bring Out The Best In Me' has been remastered and reissued for a new generation of fans - needless to say, that hardly detracts from both songs' appeal, which need no second introduction. A Prince-like funk snappiness is central to the tracks, nailing the ultra-swung mood of early '80s funk with its oohs and aoows - clearly, the aim is to make you scream, "tight!" For those who like it snappy, futuristic, and rare, this one's for you.

Now some of her best work which testifies to that term is served up on this fine album via the faultless Numero Group. The record comes with 12 deeply soulful hits from an alternate universe that are all superbly warm and heavy on the beautiful and love-struck teenage melancholy that melts your heart. Her great vocals come with backing from the FAMU Marching 100 Band and Frank Williams' The Rocketeers. The tunes that make this album comes from Smith's work in the sixties with labels such as the Deep City, Lloyd, Reid, and Blue Star. Review: The origins of the Rhythm Roots Allstars lie in a spot called Temple Bar, a club in LA which was a hub for the hottest underground funk and soul in the city in the late 90s. The Allstars were the house band, and the collective has remained strong through the decades, co-writing Grammy-winning And The Anonymous Nobody by De La Soul and recording with the likes of Aloe Blacc and Ghostface Killah. It's hard to believe then that this is the band's first solo release, but here we are, and they don't disappoint. On the A side, 'Say I Do' brings a warm R&B flavour with Fishbone's John Arthur Bigham on vocals, while the flip throws down a searing hot instrumental which speaks to the Allstars' years of experience turning out the club.

Can't Take My Eyes Off You (4:16)
Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless) (4:12)
Review: Inokasira Rangers is a reggae band from Tokyo who've been around since the 1990s, but they're hardly (criminally) known outside of Japan. Their latest release, 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You,' promises to change that, covering Frankie Valli's timely original from the late '60s, not to mention Crystal Waters' dance-pop hit on the B. A Shibuya-kei sensibility runs through this sweet pair of covers, but the main mode is lo-fi reggae. The Waters cover is particularly charming, as if this were the original, and the song had existed as a folk song for generations prior to the glitzy rave version.

Daft Punk - "Get Lucky" (feat Pharrell Williams) (3:53)
Daft Punk - "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (3:46)
Review: Hit makes of the 20th and 21st Century don't come much bigger or more accomplished than French electronic innovators Daft Punk and irresistible hook-writing machine Pharrell Williams. When they got together to make music it was always going to give rise to monster hits and so it proved. Whoever you are, 'Get Lucky' cannot fail to get you singing along and swinging those hips. The Chic-style bass riffs, the smooth and catchy vocal from Williams and the effortless groove are all timeless. That one is backed with 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' another Daft Punk classic from their earlier period but that is no less potent today.

Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love)

Can't Get Enough (Of Your Love) (Soul mix) (8:04)
Can't Get Enough (Nice Up - Reggae mix) (6:34)
Review: Last year, Freestyle Records reissued 'Tonight's The Night', the 1983 debut from West London outfit Take Three - a collaboration between production trio S.H.E (Steve Sinclair, Peter Hinds and Kevin Ellis) and lover's rock vocal harmony group Alpha (AKA Marlene Richardson and sisters Jackie and Jean Heron). 'Can't Get Enough', another gem from the band's vaults, dates from 1985 and was initially released as their final single. In keeping with the group's roots, it comes in two contrasting mixes: a gorgeously dreamy, glossy and glassy 'Soul Mix' powered forward by squelchy synth-bass, mid-tempo beats and jaunty, jazz-funk style keyboard riffs, and the 'Reggae Mix'. As the title suggests, this radically alters the tempo and groove of the track - it's basically synth-heavy, mid-80s lovers rock - whilst retaining key elements of the A-side soul version.

Looking For You (4:09)
Looking For You (4:06)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Good ole' foot stomping and hand clapping - this true Tony Humphries, Southport and soul collectors favourite finally gets a full single release. "Looking For You" is massive crossover hit from 2005 by American Gospel star Kirk Franklin, who marries Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard" with R&B and hip-hop to produce an uplifting, inspiring and infectious feel good classic. Franklin pilots his ensemble through a joyful song that will have you tapping your feet and clapping your hands in no time - and if put the lyrics and sermon aside, this could be superb dance music, too.

Review: US singer Barbara Stant's story is a common one shared by many female musicians of her generation. She was talented spotted in her teenage years by a local music impresario in the town of Shiptown. His name was Noah Biggs and he swept her up and had her in the studio on and off over the course of eight years from 1970. The music she recorded spanned all soul styles and is now collected on this great album My Mind Holds Onto Yesterday. When disco took over as the big new sound by 1978, Strand was no longer called upon by Biggs so this remains her only work.

Review: By those who know, Helene Smith is often referred to as the First Lady of Miami Soul. For proof just tune into this album on the faultless Numero Group label which features 12 deeply soulful hits from an alternate universe. The sweltering sounds are doused in beautiful and love-struck teenage melancholy with backing from the FAMU Marching 100 Band and Frank Williams' The Rocketeers. They are taken from her work in the sixties with the Deep City, Lloyd, Reid, and Blue Star labels and come on limited metallic silver vinyl to make it an extra special piece.

Where Is The Love (3:25)
Review: What we would give to go digging in the vast vaults of influential soul label JB's. Well, thankfully, they do it themselves each Record Store Day and as such we have some real treasure here with Richard Caiton's swooning and soul-drenched love song 'Thank You.' It's a super rare one from back in 1978 that is a real piece of New Orleans soul history (it is eye wateringly pricey for an original, too, with the only current one listed at just L2500.) On the flip is another lush modern soul tune 'Where Is The Love' which has been arranged by Wardell Quezerque.

Review: The Sault re-issuses keep on coming and among them comes 'Untitled (God)', intended as the dourest part of this quintuplet offering to God. This 11-track arm draws on gospel and film music more than anything else. In our view, this is the most suspenseful LP of the lot, with synthetic string sections standing in for parts that, were it not the 21st Century, we'd expect to be performed by full orchestras. No affect is lost, though: spiritual spoken-word prayers like 'Guide My Steps' recall the post-ironic vision of Dean Blunt, while everything from acapella meanderings to funk detours to improvisatory 6/4 choruses continue to pepper this long-form wonder of an album.

Review: The Rhythm Makers were a chameleonic Bronx-based band: debuting with an album in 1976 as Sabu And The Survivors, they then changed their name to The Rhythm Makers but saw commercial failure under the moniker. Metamorphosing once more into GQ, they became disco stars and then fell back into obscurity in the mid 70s. It wasn't until the new millennium in which they returned to The Rhythm Makers name and proffered a new, retrospective version of 'Soul On Your Side' to a much tighter audience - it was was soon to become their rare and sought-after retainer. The title track is a veritable classic thanks to its samplage by many hip-hop artists; the rest of the album consists entirely of zingingly sticky disco-funk cream.

The record won the United Nations's Time For Peace award for outstanding artistic achievement and for "contributing to world peace." Kaes On Aeg aka I Feel Like Making Love (2:54)
Review: Those delighted by Tallin's Porridge Bullet great job of documenting the late '80s and early 90s period of Estonian music and eager to learn more of the Eastern European country's music heritage should delve into the discography of Frotee. The label's latest release throws the spotlight on Estonian soul singer Velly Joonas, specifically the covers of European songs she recorded during the 1980s. "Stopp, Seisku Aeg!" (or "Stop! Stall the Time!") is a cover by Joonas of "I See Red" from Frida, with the Estonian providing her own lyrics over backing from amateur group Vstretsa and seems quite faithful to the soft skanking 1982 soul number. Complementing this is a wonderful cover of "Feel like Makin Love" which Frotee suggest was laid down in one hour.

If Life Could Be This Way (4:23)
How Could I Know? (4:26)
Review: During the various lockdowns of 2020 and '21, Crazy P delved deep into their vaults to see what unfinished songs were lurking in the dustier corners of the archive. These were then used as inspiration for new, finished and polished versions. This seven-inch contains two fine examples of this repurposing process. A-side 'If Life Could Be This Way' is suitably strong - a heart-aching, bittersweet chunk of laidback melancholia that sits somewhere between blue-eyed soul, Balearica and hazy West Coast jazz-rock. It's sure to be a fan favourite in years to come. 'How Could I Know' meanwhile is similarly horizontal, with tear-jerking (electronic) string sounds and a fine lead vocal from Danielle Moore clustering around a clicking, lo-fi drum machine beat
