High Time EP
Cat: 4AMKV 002. Rel: 04 Mar 22
King Konger (4:47)
High Time (3:47)
4AMK3 (4:10)
Your Only (feat Phoebe White) (5:34)
Review:  London jungle collective 4am Kru only debut back in 2021 but soon got plenty of attention. Now they are back with another vinyl EP that showcases their punchy sound. 'King Konger' is a high energy drum work out but with some pensive chords softening the edges, 'High Time' is a jostling and body-popping workout with restless drums and plunging bass. Then '4AMK3'picks it up with some grimy bars over the top of a tight, kinetic and prickly beat and 'Your Only' (feat Phoebe White) is a more silky and thoughtful soulful roller.

Horns For 2024 (5:23)
2 Time Loser (4:44)
Just Saw Johnny (5:20)
I Don't Wanna Stop (5:02)
Review: Bristolian drum n' bass collective 4am Kru is a recent founding, owing to jungle's 'never say die' popularity in the city. Following up a strict vinyl-only release style, the kru's latest EP 'Lost Time' as ever fuses rollicking breaks with soulful samples and cheeky spinbacks, curveballing the d&b equivalent of technosoul while miring everything else into a nice crunch. These sonic speculations on the junglist retrofuture are nevertheless all you need to lay down a solid party for the present.

What Is Jungle (feat Phoebe White) (4:21)
Stay Puffed (5:15)
It's Alright, Baby (5:28)
Samantha (5:18)
Review: 4AM Kru are just great aren't they. Carrying the tongue-in-cheek essence of jungle in these 4 extended mixes which include an Alison Wonderland 'High' sample in 'Stay Puffed', as well as a vocal sample of someone ripping into jungle over the massive amen break in 'What is Jungle?' - if you like the Massive amen break, this EP is for you. The relatively new London-based jungle crew have been around only 2 years but have picked up a quick following on Bandcamp, this being the third vinyl EP in the time series, following 'Good Time' and 'High Time', which also features the vocal stylings of Phoebe White. Breakcore and jungle fans have a lot to look forward to from the collective, and this EP is a great way to dip your toes into their sonical water. Jungle is massive (amen break).

Pianos Raining Down (134BPM extended Breaks mix) (6:47)
Pianos Raining Down (165BPM Jungle mix) (4:08)
Review: House veterans McDonald and Jannetta come together for a superbly old school, piano-laced and feel good jam here alongside 4am Kru. This tune oozes a love of the old and the new, with high class production bringing the right amount of nostalgia. 'Pianos Raining Down' comes in four different versions and the first one has a textbook throwback breakdown with acid house piano stabs, yelping diva vocals and a raw jungle break coming to the fore. Elsewhere there are more brain melting jungle synths and hard edge breaks for the more intense moments in the club.

Earshots (3:07)
Earshots (extended mix) (4:32)
Review: Sir Hiss and 4AM Kru set up a dialogue between London and Bristol, a stellar dialectic giving rise to a supreme form of lo-fi jungle. 'Earshots' samples a bhangra vocal cry, mixing it up with the scratchy factory movements of cut-throat jungular breaks. It marks a break from Sir Hiss' usual grime parlance, and adds to a refreshingly-named new series handled by their parent label Embrace The Real, called 'No More Mailouts', an explicit callout of PR in the electronic music industry which aims to lead by example. Power to em.

Tomorrow Will Never Be The Same (5:09)
Review: Foundation pioneer Jason Cambridge unleashes a right pair of beasts here on Australian imprint Compound. 'Flare' hits hard with a very little towards Dillinja's 'Hard Noize' era with the bite and jaggedness of the groove. 'Tomorrow Will Never Be The Same' shows us A Sides' more cosmic leanings. Sweeping out with a Marcus-like futuristic but simplistic sheen, there's a lot of latent emotion packed up in this one. Especially in the light of A Sides' right hand man Singing Fats passing away. RIP.

Soligen & Type-2 - "Can't Go" (Break remix) (6:07)
Break - "Coming 4 U" (5:16)
Jade - "What You Are" (Break remix) (5:05)
Review: The legendary Fokuz label outta the Netherlands hits a 110th release and opts for a selection of remixes from various artists. AirK & Cephei open up with 'Desire,' a slick roller with booming bass and epic synths. Break then comes through with tight remix of A2 Soligen & Type 2 's 'Can't Go' complete with expertly design hits. Break then goes it alone on the original 'Coming 4U' with its low end oscillations and closes out the EP back in remix mode. His take on 'What Are You' is a roaming, textural affair with twisted leads and flurries of toms.

Evergreen (Tim Reaper remix) (5:25)
Home Movies (feat Whytwo - Wardown remix) (6:08)
Review: Remix time! Following Akuratyde's beguiling album last year come two exceptional remixes that complement the foundational sentiment of the originals. The currently unavoidable Tim Reaper steps up first with his fine-tuned breakbeat chaos on 'Evergreen' before Technimatic member Wardown gives 'Home Movies' his own emotional twist. All breezy breaks and bags of space, he brings out the soul in every key stroke and guitar strum. Delivered on 10" but sounding XXXL, it's another essential BMTM outing.

Second Hit (6:47)
Review: Following hearty banger dispatches from the likes of Soul Mass Transit System, J Shadow and a whole stack of smashers from Zomby comes this feisty five tracker from the mysterious All Trades. Full-flavoured and broad in its tempo range, it's a first class breakbeat trip that flips from the stark futurist jungle of 'Flex Metallic' to the slower hardcore techno of the title track 'Lost Summer' to the abrasive electro-influenced fracturisms of 'Return 2'. All this and plenty more; there's more than enough room in this warehouse for all of us to party.

Android Mash (12:35)
The Eagle (6:07)
Elevation (4:48)
Review: Alphonse pens a love letter to jungle on this new EP for Klasse Wrecks. It's a flurry of drum breaks and powerful rhythms all served up through a classical lens with hefty bass underpinning each tune. This is a real journey into jungle with epic 12-minute plus opener 'Android Mash' twisting and turning through a flurry of tumbling snares, police sirens and yearning vocals. 'The Eagle' is a more soulful sound but still dense in its arrangement and tense in its rhythms. 'Elevation' closes down with plunging basslines and dark soul atmospheres.

Apex - "Echoes" (5:16)
Unknown Error - "The Yearning" (Super VIP mix) (9:24)
Review: It's been seven months now since the death of Rob Dickeson AKA Apex stunned the drum and bass community. "Echoes" is the last known track that Dickeson completed and is being released by Hospital Records in order to raise funds for Help Musicians UK's Music Minds Matter campaign. It's rather good, too, with poignant pianos, stirring strings and melancholic chords floating over a snappy, liquid funk beat. It's accompanied on the flipside by a fantastic, floor-friendly "Super VIP" mix of "Yearning", a soaring 2006 cut Dickeson produced alongside Jim Gash as Unknown Error. Top tracks and a worthy cause: this should be an essential purchase for D&B heads everywhere.

Review: Crafting sounds with care for all atmospheric jungle heads, Bristol-based Artificial Red make us all flushed and blushing with his dreamy materials. Previously appearing on Western Lore and 3AM Eternal, this time he makes his debut on Time Is Now's 'White' series with four stunning, timeless pieces and reminds us that deep music can still bang hard with the right breaks. 'Life Forms' in particular is especially of note as he brings the breaks right to the fore and has us skanking from edge to edge while delicate pads drift softly in the background. Elsewhere 'R Kid' brings a little icy euphoria into the mix and 'One For The Road' takes us to some exceedingly cosmic places. Bon voyage!

Velvet Space (5:23)
Review: Well, we don't know anything about the artist behind this second EP from the As We Enter label. Presumably, it comes from the bosses given that they rower under that same time, and beyond that all we have is the music: it's a rich drum & bass outing that fuses past, present and future sound. 'Da Licence' is a full-on cut with dusty breaks and sci-fi bleeps, then 'Fallen' really stands out with its silky metal lines and bottomless subs. There are then two restless percussive workouts in 'Kalima' and 'Velvet Space' on the flip. Whoever you are, keep it coming.

Threeform (6:31)
Review: Space jungle extraordinaire ASC is as prolific as they come, and this week he's back again with 'Sphere Of Influence', a synth-heavy present-day take on the dreamy origins of his chosen sound. Beginning with 'The Arcane', we're most struck with ASC's emphasis on atmospherics and synthwork - they come first compared to his relatively functional breakscience, which are like godlike apparatuses guiding us through heavily nuanced, heavenly vistas. That functionality goes out of the window with 'Threeform', though - an unusually sound-designed number which introduces suddenly-huge variation in the breaks, in what is said to be ¾ time.

Cosmic Energy (8:10)
Stargate (7:31)
Prophecy (7:24)
Review: Jungle of this calibre is becoming an increasing rarity nowadays, but perhaps that sense of scarcity is exactly what makes this new EP from ASC, 'Confluence Of Light', exciting. Like the cold precision of the breaks and Reeses that make this one up, it's pure economics. From the very beginning of opener 'Sunless Sky', jungle riffage is effortlessly embedded in nighttime bass, while Cetacean sound effects echo and twirl about the midrange. The abyssal sonic trend continues through nightcalls 'Cosmic Energy', 'Stargate' and 'Prophecy'. Likening drum n' bass to the cosmos, as it should be, this is a monumentally spaced-out release.

Creation (7:47)
Placid (6:57)
Essence (7:22)
Silent Running (7:26)
Review: Arguably one of the most prolific electronic musicians active today, drum n' bass cosmonaut ASC (James Clements) is back with a new deep-space venture. Having scoured the outer reaches of the observable universe and making it back without being time-dilated into oblivion, 'Perpetual Motion' is Clements' latest alien sonic haul. Venturing into nods to obscure drum n' bass variants such as raggatek, 'Creation' opts for advanced, techy breakscience amid dreamy pad arps and electric transitions. 'Placid' harks back to the dawn of drum n' bass, immortalizing the call of the loom bird as it's mixed among fine drumwork. If the A-siders were black holes, then the Bs are stars; 'Essence' has the most basic yet most infectious breakbeat, while 'Silent Running' is a lonesome closer, suitable for soundtracking the most daring of untethered spacewalks.

Review: ASC is an absolute don whether crafting ambient or drum & bass or whatever in between. Here he is on the Spatial label which was set up with a strict ethos and devotion to mid-90s vibes that take in breakbeats, luscious pads, heavy 808 bass and a 160 bpm tempo. ASC opens the EP with a tried and tested amen banger with classic chop and splice techniques. 'Nectar' is then dark and tense yet brilliantly alluring and 'Flashback' takes you back to the heart of a strobe-lit and gritty dance floor in the 90s. The icing on the cake is 'Hindsight' with its spaced-out sounds and jittery cymbals locking you in for the thrilling ride.

Review: Audio Soul Project returns with fresh vinyl here in the form of their Simurgh EP, which is named after a mythical Persian bird. Across the tunes you'll find a fusion of dub, d&B, house and even r&b to make for an alluring sonic trip. Opener 'Deliver Me' brings the warmth and soul with balmy chords over raw, woody drums with a big diva vocal up top. Things are paired back for 'Azizam Dub' which has a subsonic bass line bump and synth stabs bringing the energy. 'Internal Vybrations' is d&b powered by monstrous bass with hi-hats, shakers and maracas detailing the rhythm, and last of all 'Celebration Dub' brings a funky and summery house vibe perfect for outdoor dancing. This is as varied an EP as you'll hear this season.

Review: In contrast to the deluge of raw d&b we've let through the floodgates this week, ASC's latest EP is a dreamy and twinkly scene-setter. Nodding to the presence of godlike, benevolent celestial beings behind the beats, tracks like 'Averted Visions' and 'Aphelion's Edge' seem to be getting at something like a divine ideal of space jungle. They play up the entrancing possibilities of the breakbeat (however lo-fi the original drum samples are) rather than their banger potential.

Review: Simon Huxtable is the UK artist behind the Aural Imbalance alias and after a couple of solid outings in 2022 he starts 2023 on a similarly strong footing. This pink vinyl on the Spatial label opens with archetypal amen breaks straight from the 90s on 'Parallel Universe'. Subtle funk melodies add the colour then crisp breaks define 'Warning Sine' with its textural synth lines and atmospheric breakdowns. There is a rolling and blissed out feel to the analogue drum sounds of 'Syren of Hyperion' while 'Genesis' rains down gorgeous melodies and catchy beat patterns to close out another innovative outing for Huxtable.

This latest drop from Axis is sweet one that will sound all the better in summer. Opener 'Ill Mansion Jazz' is as silky as they come, with plunging bass, shimmering synths and melancholic chords over dusty high speed breaks. On the flipside is the jazzy late night vibe of 'Barumba Nights' with its double bass and mysterious sax leads. Super classy stuff.
