Master Of Finances
Cat: SUBALT 028. Rel: 06 Oct 21
Master Of Finances (4:58)
Slimy (4:35)
Balaclava (4:50)
Review: Portugal's 3WA remains a key voice in the low end spectrum thanks to big tunes on Boka, Crucial Recordings, Foundation Audio and Earth & Stone. The master of the big drop and all consuming bass is now snapped up by Subaltern for three more of his menacing workouts. 'Master Of Finances' demands you to revel in the lurching drum work and cavernous bass. 'Slimy' is even more poised and heavy, with steel plated hits and sci-fi twitches making for a cinematic soundscape. Closing out the EP is 'Balaclava,' a wonky and wobbling affair with oodles of reverb, mysterious leads and of course a weighty underside.

Phobos
Oort Cloud
Matter Of Time
Review: Instra:mental's Nonplus imprint are set to unleash US based producer ASC's debut album, Nothing Is Certain next month but first deliver a three track taster of this highly anticipated LP. "Phobos" sets industrial noises and sparse, dramatic tones as its backdrop but entwines electronic grooves and micro samples over the top to create his unusual but wholly captivating sound. "Oort Cloud" drops out into some cosmic, downtempo atmospheres of weightless space before "Matter of Time" explores wind-like sounds and melodies, deep oceans of bass and his intriguing use of Oriental sounding percussion. Once listen to this will have you holding your breath for July's LP.

Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place (4:34)
Your Shed's Too Big (5:06)
Review: Boofy on System; we're surprised this hasn't happened sooner... But the wait has been worth it as we've got two powerful lessons in suspense, tension and low end drama. "Climb Out Of Your Hiding Place" sets the admonishing tone. Paranoid, foreboding and stripped back to the bare elements, it's the perfect pace setter. Flip for another excellently titled track as "Your Shed's Too Big" flips the focus on the rolling steppy percussion and wandering pipe arpeggio that skitters around the cut like a spider on ice. Get shedded.

Iceman (feat Riko Dan) (3:28)
Iceman (instrumental) (3:28)
Review: Aside from having a stellar catalogue of releases that span from labels like Reflex to Hyperdub, Kevin Martin's The Bug project has been a foundational pillar of the UK dubstep and bass scene. if there has always been one producer to take things one step further and challenge the dance with each new tune, it's most certainly this producer. No wonder he's been releasing music on Ninja Tune for ages, and that he's back on the label now with this new EP. "Box" features revered grime MC D Double E on the mic, and the collaboration between the two results in utter carnage, a visceral grime banger backed by The Bug's twisted concoctions of beats and bass; check the instrumental, too. "Iceman" is a similar sort of curbside killer, this time with Riko Dan on the vocals, and followed by that gnarly instrumental cut...oof!

Good Ova Evil (Sativa club version) (4:23)
Review: Ploughing into the club with pure murkery and venom, Italian crew Butu Yard lay down a 150 piece on Matera-based label. Sitting somewhere between Biome and Strategy, it's thick, oily, industrial strength badness that's primed for system demolition as 2022 progresses and things open up more. Amplified on the B by a turbo-charged jungle twist from Sativa Club where the powerful vocal and heavy bass textures are maintained beneath some rampant 160 breaks work.

Esoteric (with En:vy) (4:35)
Juan40 (4:12)
Review: Following jams on Bowlcut and Monk earlier this year, Cesco returns to the 1985 mothership with this mighty fine mixed bag of 140/174 treats. 'Rattler' says it all. Curmudgeonly and grizzly, it sizzles out of the speakers with pure venom. Elsewhere on a D&B tip En:vy gets mucked in on tippy harmonics of 'Esoteric' while 'Pity' is all jazzy, slinky and full of tension. Meanwhile on the 140 flip 'El Guapo' is proper hammer jam with a most unruly bassline Q&A while 'Juan40' will have you speaking Spanish before you can say 'wheel up the bloodclart'. Rattle and roll!

Review: Black Acre has always been a home-from-home for Sheffield artist Commodo. He's back on the label now with more of his inter-genre explorations. This time out he brings grime, bass and 90s punk guitar together into something utterly fresh. Think of Fugazi and Mudhoney as reference options and you will be in the right ballpark, but all with this producer's signature sonic structure and hefty bottom ends. These are 140 instrumentals with their own dark energy and they bring a truly different vibe to the dubstep template.

Shift (feat JME)
Shift (instrumental)
Review: On his first release for Deep Medi Musik this year, Commodo taps up JME for a mean lyrical flow over the top of a typically monstrous production, making a perfect dubstep / grime crossover track in the process. JME has a blast pointing back to classic reference points from Kano and Wiley and many more in his conscious MC turn, while Commodo's beat prowls in the background with that exotic charm that has always marked out his style from the rest of the pack. There's a hooky chorus and plenty of grand stabs, and for those who just want the tune the instrumental is bundled in as well. The fact that the beat stands up on its own without any trouble says a lot about Commodo's studio prowess, which is no doubt why he continues to be a mainstay on Mala's label.

Stronghold (4:16)
Armada Bleeps (4:41)
Review: Deep Medi Musik continues on its mission to find the darkest, deepest and heaviest dubstep out there with a new bowel-rumbling release from Compa. It opens with the lurching drums and insistent stabs of 'Mind Control', a spacious wobbler with impossibly weighty bass. 'Emergence' then gets a little busier with zippy leads pinging about the mix and frosty static adding texture to the low end wub. 'Stronghold' is another bleak futuristic vision where all humanlike has been replaced by AI and 'Armada Bleeps' brings glassy texture, edgy chords and glitching breaks.

Vacuum States
Review: Having announced his new Jon Convex endeavour with two slices of formidable futurism for Martyn's 3024 imprint, Damon Kirkham returns to the familiarity of Non Plus with a double clutch of equally essential productions. Fans of cult TV might recognise the snatch of Badalamenti strings that announce "Radar" in such ominous fashion, though it's they way this element is weaved amidst ever groaning insect like bass and murderous strains of dystopian acid that truly impresses. And of course the brittle click clack of drums that always threatens to smash to pieces. In contrast, "Vacuum States" offers a more optimistic slant on the sci fi electro poise, gradually letting loose a succession of kaleidoscopic synth flutters over the stripped down kick thrust and glooping bass.

Review: It's now five up for the Pearly Whites crew and their self titled series of on going various artist's collections. This one kicks off with the slow and heavy sounds of Deseplate's 'One Day' before the flute laced, jazz-tinged and stoner delights of Boss Mischief's 'Ice Cold.' There are more fuel good and heady sounds with lush flues from Invader Spade then Drone gets more dark and gritty on 'Lil Jug.' Lemzly Dale and BR3 close out this superb mix of trap, grime and dubstep.

Review: Get out of the shower scene and onto our decks. Drone follows up his Circadian Rhythms release with a ruthless jam that's straight out of the Norman Bates guidebook to life. Stark staccato strings, booming bass and spacious beats; this is pure Bristol Psycho business and it's backed by another west country horror Boofy on the remix. Chopping up the original within an inch of its life, he adds a little ghetto-twist in the beats for added murderation. Heavy.

Review: Basic Rhythm alter ego East Man returns to his Hi Tek imprint with his second anti gum-flapping manifesto. Rough, sludgy, oppressive; "Jaws" is a stripped back to the bulbous bare essentials. Just a warm 808 bass/kick and snare hits, weaving and bobbing with heavy hypnosis. Flip for "Border Clash" where strange bee's nest textures buzz between the bass hits and shattered percussive hits. Paranoid, confusing, heavy. Dark times inspire dark tunes.

Review: The dream team of East Man and Walton are back together for another collaborative single on Hi Tek. Things kick off with the tough as teak 'Screw Face', which does just what it says on the tin. It's a square wave banger with a big bad bass that cannot fail to make you jump. Flip it over for something more hard and steppy despite the fact it moves as a slow and icy pace. 'Don't Speak' layers off kilter percussion and booming sub bass that makes for a meditative sound that will get all the head nodders lost in their own world right by the speaker stacks.

Review: The Indicator label is launching with a real bang this month as it drops its first three EPs all on the same day. This is the second one and it lays out a sonic vision that is rooted in bass and grime. These tunes are lifted from a previously lost CD that hasn't been seen for some 20 years. The music has been newly mastered for this vinyl release and it finds Great Ezcape in ferocious form. These heavy cuts sound future today despite their age as they mix up fizzing synths, sleazy bass and grimy bars.

Review: Hamdi presents DUPLOC with two of his most sought-after dub plates on this sizzling new 12", plus a bonus vinyl-one cut. The 'Selecta' EP comes three years after his one and only other record and kicks off with the title track, a menacing low-slung buzzer. The drums make heavy rotations beneath a synth one that zips about with future energy. 'Immortal' then layers up another fat low-end oscillation and crisp hits while 'Peace' has a more prickly percussive vibe and suspensory feel topped with grime vocals. Three sound systems winners, for sure.

Review: Infernal Sounds is sort of how you might imagine an old mum or dad to describe some young producer's efforts in their bedroom studio. But no, it is actually the name of this fledgling label which is now back with a seance EP featuring various emerging artists all offering up one tune each. Hypho & Abstrakt Sonance - take the first slot with 'Take It Or Leave It' (feat Rakjay - VIP), a low-end wobbler of the highest order. Darkimh brings some melodic intrigue to his late-night cruise and Sordez then gets funky and minimal with 'Lighthouse'. Substrada's 'Daka' is a superb bass number with crashing hits.

Guyana (East Man remix) (4:34)
Review: JEB1 is an inimitable producer who brings his distinctive beats to Hi Tek Sounds with this tidy new single. "Guyana" has a real sombreness in the lead synth that rings out of stuttering drums. There are some soothing vocal sounds, too, but the dread of the bass and tension of the perc do little to assuage the feelings of uncertainly. East Man steps up for the remix on the B side. His version pops with tin pot percussion and growling bass that is at times smooth, at others gritty. It closes out a tight two tracker that packs a real punch.

White Noise
Review: Just when you thought you had Al Bleek and Damon Drama's Non Plus sorted, they go and make a sharp diversion and take you somewhere completely different. The destination? LOL. And no, that's not a joke. A teaser for their forthcoming album Me Me, the tracklist reads a little like an Alice In Wonderland list of instructions or perhaps a seductive dance; "Squeeze Me" kicks off with sinuous R&B style vocals and enticing synths with a slow, lolhloping half step rhythm, which inevitably drags you in deep like a tidal current of sound, while "Face Me" follows a languid 4/4 drum pattern drenched in late night synths. "Dare Me", up next, mirrors the sonic palette with shimmering, spaced out atmospherics and more glorious, syrup sweet lyrics. Visceral and rather enthralling, it bears the hallmarks of nocturnal dance music with throbbing b-line and infectious, enveloping synth-work, but with an underlying pop/R&B sensibility that shines through the darkness. Crackly, droning atmospherics sit beneath ice cold bleeps on finale "White Noise". A far cry from much of the recent Non Plus output for sure, but a remarkable release nonetheless which we urge you to get your teeth into.

Review: Hold on tight for some low end wobblers here from this new EP, Duploc Selects Y, featuring six sizzlers from six different artists on the DUPLOC label. Ninety kicks off with the cancerous 'Snek's Kiss' with its low end snaking through a desolate urban landscape. Ghostek closed down with the dread-fuelled 'Seek War'.

Review: Feeling Peaky? Good... We have just the tonic as the northern crew start up a new black label series. Anonymous producer, serious vibes - both cuts really bite into that classic mid-2000s sound and groove and mindset. 'Nine Lives' will curl your whiskers at 20 paces thanks to its classic wobble and trippy overlays. 'Dubplate' maintains those deep vibes with a measured groove, brilliant spoken word sample (possibly from the late great Leon from Music House) and a mutated bassline that twists and turns as the track progresses. Proper business. Limited to 300. No represses.

'Gatekeeper' is sludgy, gloom-coated creeper, 'Whispers' sees him teaming up with Ickle for an icy swagger while 'Trust' closes the EP on a gentle, woozy tip. Timeless.

Review: Not content with dropping the delirious "Deadman", Sam Shackleton offers up another must-have release in the shape of this expansive double pack. Lead cut "Fireworks" is classic Shackleton - a skittering dubstep/dub techno fusion that makes delicious use of echo-laden congas, foreboding noises and distant, Middle Eastern melodies. It's utterly spellbinding. T++ remixes, delivering a ricocheting dub take. On the second disc, Shackleton reveals "Undeadman", a kind of bizzaro universe mix of "Deadman". It's pleasingly creepy, working odd samples and strange found sound around a solid, dancefloor-friendly rhythm. Flip for an excellent remix from Mordant Music, which makes brilliant use of a live dub bassline.
