Review: West Coast Classics brings the heat on this latest super 7" with one fo the biggest name sin the game taking care of the a-side. 2 Pac's 1993 gem 'Keep Ya Head Up' features R&B singer Dave Hollister. The tune was dedicated to his godson Elijah and Latasha Harlins and also points out the abuse black women face in society. It's a cut that brims with warmth and a beat sampled from Zapp's 'Be Alright.' Flip it over for King Tee's slow motion, deep cut funk jewel 'Played Like A Piano' which is another vital tune.

Review: Two producers "supplying listeners with a steady dose of flips on a regular basis", 20 Dolla Julio & Bombeardo distribute just that at street level, spicing up our 7" crates with four ratchet, crunk instrumental hip hop releases. 'Here We Go' melds overloaded trap with swung "go" samples and distorted edges, while 'Plaid - Champ' gets at organ-twanging swing and alien spaceship zaps, upping the wonk to higher proportions. Closing cuts 'Get The Fork Up' and 'Roc The Place' switch into dancehall and 90s gangsta boom bap. "If everybody's here then do it to it, cos there ain't nothing to it!" correctly goes the vocal sample. Smouldering stuff from the Californian duo.

The music of Junie Morrison and Ohio Players features heavily of course as The King pays tribute to the original iconic breakbeats that helped make him such a don in the hip-hop world. This box has seven singles in all, with 13 of these new tunes all appearing across seven differently coloured slices of wax.

Review: Hip-hop meets razor rave beats head on as two DJ-friendly versions of well worn and much loved East Coast rap tracks end up on either side of this rather nifty 7". The title track is the more classic of the two - perhaps that's why it gets given the more subtle overhaul of the two. The flip is more of a head on collision between its subject matters, and we'd contest the more urgent and dramatic of the two as a result, although short of putting it on at the incorrect speed you'd find it hard not to succeed with such tools of the trade in your hand and/or box.

Review: Dynamite Cuts is one of the most apply named labels of them all. Once again here it brings the serious funk heat on a tidy 7" from The 9th Creation. Both of these super sexy killers are taken from the mega rare Bubble Gum album and it's not hard to see why it has become such a highly sought after record. The title tune is only just over two minute long but has steamy spoken word vocals with Moog funk bass. 'Rule Of Mind' is longer at over five minutes, and the way the keys shimmy into your affections and the lead sax brings the lustre is second to none. What an EP.

Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Funkin' For Jamaica (7")

Review: Tom Browne's 1980 single 'Funkin' For Jamaica' has long been something of an anthem - a hybrid funk/boogie classic that remains a staple in sets of hip-hop, disco and soul DJs alike. Given its ubiquity, covering the song is fraught with danger, but remarkably Japanese producer Akiko and guest vocalist Mbanja Richy have successfully put a new spin on it. Their take is subtly tougher and more synth-heavy, with bilingual French/English vocals, nods to Zouk music and a bassline so squelchy it could have been lifted from a P-funk record. Over on the flip, the pair go mellow, deep and laidback on a pleasingly skewed hip-hop soul cover of Terry Callier's legendary vocal interpretation of Alex North's 'Love Theme' from 'Spartacus'. Inspired stuff all told.

Review: Times may change and life may evolve, but the Allergies will always be unashamed party-starters whose records are both pleasingly heavy and instantly accessible. By now, you shouldn't need further proof og their skills in this department, but if you do, the Bristol combo's latest "45" is a lesson is dancefloor-igniting goodness. 'Lean on You' is a live and funk-fuelled as you'd expect, with distinctive flash-fried funk-rock guitar riffs, bustling, interestingly slung breakbeats and a fine lead vocal from Dynamite MC. Over on the flip, 'Working on Me' is a more bluesy, cut-and-paste funk breaks number that's guaranteed to get feet moving out on the dancefloor.

Now he is back with more of his rugged, proudly analogue electro goodness in the form of this scintillant and throwback single 'Situation Hot.' It first came in 1986 so bares all the loveable production hallmarks you would expect from that era - icy cowbells, jacked-up drums, serene chords and a beat to make you move your body in funky fashion. Review: Arlo Parks is now a hugely successful indie artist with many great tunes to her name. One of them came back in 2019 in the form of her Cola EP back when she was just 18 years old. It showcased her smoky, soulful and mournful vocal skills with gentle guitar accoutrements and plenty of dusty vinyl crackle for added authenticity. That title tune is here in all its tender glory while on the flip is 'George' which is yet another standout single that has slightly more upbeat lyrics and prouder production. What a talent she is.

She has won over fans and critics many times over the last few years and not least with Super Sad Genration, which was a collection of her EPs to date. It is that album's title cut which makes it onto this 7" alongside 'Paperbacks'. The a-side is tender sound with lovelorn vocals and mournful narratives over wistful melodies and downbeat drums. Review: Hip-hop diggers will happily tell you that "Top Billin" was one of the tightest, heaviest and most stripped-back rap jams to emerge from New York in the mid 1980s. Here the 1987 hip-hop club classic is given the reissue treatment by fresh label Know How, marking the cut's first appearance on "45" for 32 years. The A-side vocal version - the most famous of the two takes - is a great example of the dancefloor power of stripped-back hip-hop, with the completed cut being little more than chunky drum machine beats and on-point raps rich in call-and-response sections and crowd-pleasing slogans. The harder to find flipside instrumental lays this bare, peppering the duo's beat with select snippets of reverb-laden chants.

Review: Big Crown is one of our favourite labels here at HQ. The funk and soul they serve up is perfectly aged yet never overly nostalgic and this new one is another case it point. It's the latest from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and features two singles take from their latest and greatest album Expansions which landed back in June. As always they bring their own unique steel drum sounds and tropical Caribbean vibes to funk music. 'Raise It Up' is a deep cut joint with big horns and rippling steel drums puddles while 'Space' is a more lumpy groove with the drums more front and centre.

Review: Beatsqueeze deals proudly in 90s hip hop and timeless, golden era boom bap. The 72nd such 7" from the label and producer of he same name is another one to add to the racks if you too love those sort of sounds - and frankly, why wouldn't you? '318 Series' (90s HipHop mix) is a leggy one that rides one big hits and dusty breaks with some sweet bars up top to finish it off nicely. '320 Series' (90s HipHop mix) is much more laidback, with jazzy melodic motifs up top and airy drums that float as they roll.

Review: When it comes to mash-ups and unofficial reworks, sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make for the most effective versions. That's certainly the case here, as Soul Mates main man Amerigo Gazaway crafts a fresh slab of funk/hip-hop fusion out of three key elements: a legendary Biggie Smalls acapella, sections lifted from James Brown classic "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and his own head-nodding hip-hop beats. There's not much more to it than that, but the resultant cut, "Big Poppa's Got a Brand New Bag", sounds like a guaranteed dancefloor winner. The A-side version is the full vocal take, while the flipside is a Biggie-free instrumental mix.

Review: This latest 445rpm from Black Buffalo finds Nick's Green Fingers alias remix 1991's Naughty by Nature anthem 'OPP' into something completely different. His progressive bassline nails you to the floor and brings plenty of house music feels while the hip hp swagger makes it all the more dance able. According to Chuck D, LXVNDR is the queen of Canadian hip hop and here she joins Nick Bike with a mid-tempo groove full of swagger. Review: Boston MC Ed O.G. his Da Bulldogs crew laid down their 1991 hip hop classic 'I Got To Have It' and now, decades late, producer Nike Bike reworks it into something utterly new and fresh for the Canadian label Buffalo. He does it with some big old boom bap drums and some busy and funky horn stabs, while the original vocals from Ed OG bring that old school flavour over the new school sound with plenty of added scratching for extra flex.
