Windy C Collection (double 7")
Cat: DYNAM 7011/12. Rel: 21 Jun 18
Windy C (5:23)
Puppet On A Chain (3:47)
No More City, No More Country (45 edit) (4:15)
Holes In My Shoes (3:32)
Review: 1974's Coming Right At You, the sole album from 100% Pure Poison, has long been a sought-after jazz-funk gem. Soul Brother has previously reissued the rare (and increasingly expensive) LP, though this double 7" marks the first time most of these tracks have been available on wax since 2001. Check first opener (and title track) "Windy C", a superb chunk of lolloping, laidback jazz-funk that sits somewhere between Bob James and Cymande, before turning your attention to the slow-burn soulful delights of string-laden torch song "Puppet On A Chain". Over on the second 7", "No More City, No More Country" is a more hard-spun Blaxploitation funk affair, while "Hole In My Shoe" is a horn-fired slab of J.B's style funk-soul fusion.

Look Into My Eyes (6:49)
Express (4:55)
Review: Brit-funk combo 52nd Street are undeniably best-known for their 1983 single on Factory Records, "Look Into My Eyes", which came accompanied by some killer remixes from John "Jellybean" Benitez and sailed closed to the NYC electro sound. The Manchester outfit's roots were in jazz-funk though, as this essential reissue of their 1982 debut single proves. "Look Into My Eyes" is simply superb: a warm, woozy and gently groovy affair full of attractive lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer lines and dreamy chords. If you're after some more up-tempo dancefloor pressure, check out flipside "Express" - a riotous affair rich in hammered-out Clavinet lines, jaunty lead lines and energetic percussion.

A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga" (4:03)
Jack Wilkins - "Red Clay" (4:03)
Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Abram & Nestor - "Four Minutes Of Funk" (4:02)
Nestor Alvarez - "El Trombonista" (2:50)
Review: Neil Anderson's unashamedly revivalist Original Gravity label is back once again - when are they not dropping heat, frankly? - with more funk goodness. This time out it is two more massive slices of tasty Latin funk getting served up. The first is Abram & Nestor's 'Four Minutes Of Funk' which is indeed four minutes of funk that will unite dancefloors from here to eternity with its big organ magic. Nestor Alvarez' 'El Trombonista' is as you might guess denied by its big trombone and also boasts some great horn work. These are two steamy and sizzling cuts that prove irresistible.

Yinne (4:21)
Fo Yelle (4:50)
Review: Florence Adooni's relationship with Philophon goes back some time. She was the voice of Guy One's group and featured on his hit 'Estre' while she also provided vocals for Jimi Tenor's club classic 'Vocalize My Luv'. Under her own name, she has also dropped a series of top albums that have earned her the title of "the queen of Frafra-Gospel". This super sweet 45rpm typifies that sound with shakers and hand clapping, acoustic guitars and earthy drum sounds. 'Yinne' is upbeat and sunny and rich in melody and 'Fo Yelle' is much more heartfelt and introspective. Both are great.

Pink Rhythm (6:41)
Review: The Advanced Cookbook Of Mr Selig And Kanzler Z was a short-lived experimental jazz act also known as Cookbook. They put out one EP and two albums, with this 12" being taken from the debut. It came in 1989 and German label the Zoo In You initially and has the vocals of Mr Selig on the A-side, and guitar by Wolfgang Bokelmann and words by Dieter Pougin on the flip. An original will cost you more than a night at the pub and even finding samples online can be hard. Rest assured it is future jazz that still sounds futuristic today.

L' Altro Dio (Seq 1) (3:08)
Review: Alessandro Alessandroni is a library music legend who set the blueprint for the genre early on and then managed to get even more famous because of providing the iconic whistle on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The influential composer and musician had a big say in the world of soundtracks during the 60s and 70sFour Flies have often released his work or covers of it. The tunes on this 7" are taken from an obscure 1975 Italian film by Elio Bartolini. They walk the thin line between disco and funk and jazz-funk with big horn and rhythm sections. Both might have been lost forever if it weren't for the fact that this label put them on the now modern classic and hard to find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Alpaca Phase III - "Paper Man" (3:38)
Sam Dees - "False Alarms" (3:09)
Review: Fans of the Atlanta and Birmingham soul sound of the 70s take note - this one is for you. 'Paper Man' by Sam Dees and Alpaca Phase III comes from that golden time and has only just been earthed by someone digging in the vault of Moonsong and Clintone Recordings. Sam Dees worked with Alpaca Phase III in 1974 on some music for Atlantic and then this ballad a little later. Dees is the vocalist on 'False Alarms' and anyone who heard his Second To None CD in 1995 will know it. These are two golden soul tunes that will swoon their way into your affections.

Kajyadhi Fu Bushi (Visible Cloaks remix) (4:54)
Review: 'Kajyadhi-fu bushi' is actually a Japanese wedding song. It was first written and recorded in 1977 by Jazz man Jun Arasaki and his Nine Sheep collective. They did it in one take - which is the one you hear here - across an array of unusual (at least here in the west) instruments such as five sanshin, four winds, piano, bass, percussion and drums. It's a sombre, slow-motion lullaby that is imbued with subtle joy. Next to the original, a Visible Cloaks remix up the ambient beauty and makes it feel more cosmic and expansive.

Yoisura Bushi (6:51)
Yoisura Bushi (Kuniyuki remix) (8:45)
Review: Ikue Asazaki's music dates back to the early 00s, when the Japanese polymath was making spiritual folk music with an electronic edge for major labels like Sony, Universal and CBS. She has taken a turn for the unexpected over the last few years, dropping singles on much lesser-known labels with an underground following. Japan's own Mule Musiq is a perfect example, and this new EP houses her music incredibly well. "Yoisura Bushi" is a spectacularly hypnotic affair, with piano keys and Asazaki's voice colliding magnificently, blending into one solitary wall of sound; the Kuniyuki remix replaces the lonesome stagger of the piano for similarly desolate landscapes made of percussion.

Euler Spiral (4:05)
Review: Astral Quartet was a group that changed their name and evolved into Centre El Muusa. They never played live nut managed to record just two tunes back in 2018. Now, five years later, they finally get to see the light of day. They could be 50 years old such is the quality of the musicianship - fusions of jazz and funk that brim with character. The band is made up of Monika Erdman, Rauno Vaher, Volodja Brodsky and Misha Panfilov who mix up cosmic Wurlitzer sounds, languorous synths and fresh drums, turning it into something laidback and psyched on the b-side and more funky and up-beat on the a-side.

Everybody (4:01)
And Then We Were One (4:47)
Review: Expansion's latest must-check seven-inch mines Roy Ayers' 1983 album "Lots Of Love", a sparkling post-disco set that combined the vibraphonist's usual jazz-funk flavours with colourful synthesizers and genuine boogie flavours. "Everybody" on the A-side is particularly potent; a lolloping synth-boogie head-nodder rich in life-affirming synthesizer squelches, rubbery jazz-funk bass, fluid Ayers vibraphone solos and background vocals that sneakily reference "Everybody Loves The Sunshine". Flipside "And Then We Were One" is if anything even more summery in feel, with mazy synth and vibraphone motifs dancing atop a killer jazz-funk groove. It's a little more up-tempo than the A-side, but arguably a little less addictive.

Reaching The Highest Pleasure (5:46)
I Am Your Mind (part 2 - Pepe Bradock main mix) (7:31)
Review: Roy Ayers staked a bold claim by flaunting the fact that he had 'Reach[ed] The Highest Pleasure' back in June '77. Unfortunately for us back then, this lifetime hedonistic milestone - documented in instrumental funk form - was shelved for reasons unknown beyond simple artistic oversight. As said, this slick solo instrumental for drums, bass and vibraphone is a perfect soul-jazz, chillout trifecta, one for the rarities collectors.

Azimuth - "Manha" (3:45)
Osmar Milito E Quarteto Forma - "America Latina" (2:46)
Review: A tale of two sides, Azimuth's classic "Manha" should be recognisable to many; taken from their self-titled LP in 1975, its golden harmonies and lavish, lolloping Bob James style jazz are as timeless as they were 40 years ago. Flip for "America Latina". Conjured by prolific collaborator Osmar Milito (whose discography features the likes of Sammy Davis Jr, Spanky Wilson and Liza Minelli), its striking, sing-along charms are no accident... It was actually created for 70s Brazilian soap opera Selva De Pedra.

Con La Mano En La Biblia (2:50)
Review: Matasuna Records take us on a trip back to late 60s Panama, offering up two supremely rare tracks which, on their original pressings, would be a costly investment if you were lucky enough to find them. The A-side belongs to Camilo Azuquita and his joyous 'Borombon', a track bristling with exuberant brass and striking piano. On the B-side, Panama Brass lay down 'Con La Mano En La Biblia', a lively affair led by organist Cristobal Munoz Jr and featuring some of the best musicians in Panama at the time.

Tried (feat Little Dragon) (3:33)
Tried (instrumental) (3:32)
Review: Despite not releasing all that much in 2018, Canadian nu-jazz combo BADBADNOTGOOD's reputation continued to rise. That was in no small part due to their eye-catching collaboration with Little Dragon, which resulted in the digital release of "Tried" back in September. Now the track has been given a deserved seven-inch single release by Ninja Tune. With LD lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano doing her best to channel the spirit of Minnie Riperton, "Tried" has a similarly languid, jazz/folk/soul fusion feel as some of the best works by Rotary Connection. BADBADNOTGOOD's admiration of the Charles Stepney-produced band comes through loud and clear through the choice of instruments and arrangements. For further proof, check the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

Review: Banda Maje, an ever-changing collective helmed by composer/keyboardist Peppe Maiellano and producer/rapper/DJ Tonico Setlanta, have delivered a hugely impressive debut single here. The collective's soon to be trademark sound is rooted in vintage funk, library music and old Italian film soundtracks, but has a contemporary freshness that makes both showcased tracks avoid the pitfalls of empty nostalgia. A-side 'Formelesse' is warming and groovy, with shuffling funk beats and undulating bass guitar underpinning 1970s synth sounds, jazz-funk vocalisations and refined horn riffs. On the flip, they deliver a deliciously breezy take on one of their favourite Italian movie themes, re-casting it as a summery slab of jazz-funk/samba fusion.

Review: Chris Bangs is actually credited as being the man who coined the term 'acid jazz' and here he shares this new Acid Jazz 7" with Mick Talbot who was of course a founding member of the Style Council. Together they serve up a brace fo brilliantly cheeky but functional jazz cuts to get dance floors in a spin. 'Sumthin' Else' has an almost samba shuffle and plenty of florid trumpets lighting up the busy groove. 'Wiggle Wiggle' then goes direct for your ass with its raw boom bap and noodling chords all finished with some big horn work

Review: "The dampness of the rainforest, the hostility of the mangrove ultimately did not suit him. So he left his natural environment for the tranquillity of a freshwater body". So goes the (translated) back story of this new EP from Laurent Bardainne. The 'he' in question is a Tiger who ventured across Europe, Asia and America and apparently picked up various musical styles along the way. Whatever you make of that, the tracks here are gold: "Marvin" is smooth jazz fusion with percolating drums, "Porsche 944" has a joyous lead sax and more crisp boom bap drums, while "Aout" is a soaring bit of heartfelt soul Daptone might put out. The Drop Vibes rework of "Porsche 944" features a vocal roller and closes things in fine fashion.

Review: Here comes a truly show-stopping swooner on Penrose, the sublabel of the ever-trusty Daptone Records. This is the first solo outing for Jensine Benitez, who is usually found singing with Thee Sacred Souls, a hard-gigging outfit who always send the crowd home elated after Benitez takes centre stage. With her bandmates on hand to provide back-up duties, we get treated to a pair of dreamy soul songs that capture a little 50s swing which gels beautifully with Benitez's arresting voice. Both tracks are downtempo lullabies perfect for those intimate, wind-down moments with the one you love. Trust us, this is some seriously romantic stuff.

Review: Sample spotters will have a field day here, by identifying the A-side 'Diana' as the source for tracks by Jay Dee , Madlib, Primo, Buckwild, as well as being instantly recognisable as J DIlla's choice of main hook for Slum Village's 'Fall In Love'. On the flip we have 'Free', ain edit of 'Free Again', which is a jazz cover of a Barbara Streisand song from 1966 - or that sample from Ghostfacedkilla's 'IRON Theme'. Both tracks are of two stand out tracks from the Gap Mangione Trio's 1968 LP Diana in the Autumn Wind. And here's a novel idea for you all - you could even skip the notebook scribbling and just take some pleasure from their lush orchestrations and properly effortless swinging big band jazz if you were so minded! Review: Rhythm, blues and funk outfit The Blackbyrds were formed in Washington, D.C. in 1973, and as we have noted numerous times over at Juno, their music hardly saw the light of day around the time, save for a re-formation in 2012 after renewed interest brought their music back to light. The Washington fusion group were initially mentored by trumpeter Donald Byrd, but their sound came to differ from his sultry and slow tones, working in a more melancholic yet upbeat style, and flowery trumepeteering to boot. This 7" comes in stunning new vinyl quality, showing off a further two lost instrumentals, 'Rock Creek Park' and 'Gut Level'.

She is the latest to serve up her wares on One World Records with two super strong sides of soul tinged jazz on this essential 7" slice of goodness. 'Love Is In Town' has it all - lush sax solo, rolling rhythm sections, horn stabs and loose percussion, all finished with that special voice. Brazilian Boys - "Super Herois" (3:09)
Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao - "Ta Tudo Ai" (2:28)
Review: We'll never tire of the incredible Brazil45 series on Mr Bongo, which has provided an authoritative window into the rich history of 60s and 70s grooves from South America. Here's a missing joint from the series which took some time to come to fruition - a split release featuring Brazilian Boys on the A side and Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao on the B. 'Super Herois' is an obscure slice of off-kilter, psych tinged funk from 1975 that has the kind of individual sound which could find favour with a lot of different DJs. 'Tudo Ai' has a more recognisable samba shuffle, but much like the A side there's a subtle twist in the sound which leans towards blues rock and jazz, locking down on the rhythm and creating a low-key party starter in its own unique way.
