Review: A Mountain of One pair off in a versus battle with dub maestro and longtime studio wizard Dennis Bovell for new dub versions of 'Custard's Last Stand.' This is the first new music from A Mountain of One in a decade and it marks the inaugural release on their new AMORE label. This tune was recorded over Skype during the pandemic and shows that the pairing of Mo Morris and Zeben Jameson and have lost nothing since we last heard from them - it is snaking atmospheric, deep dub with plenty of heady pads and cinematic designs. Review: Back in the early 2000s, Stefan Schwander (better known these days for his Harmonious Thelonious project) released a handful of fine 12" singles as A Rocket In Dub that successfully blurred the boundaries between minimal house and dub techno. Here, one of the series' most renowned cuts, 'Rocket No. 3', is revisited. Like the 2002 original mix, the A-side version is a hypnotic, softly spun delight, with echoing organ motifs, bubbly electronics, opaque synth sounds and new spoken word snippets (provided by fellow German artist Jan Delay) gently rising above a deep, dubby bassline and sparse, shuffling tech-house beats. Over on the flip, there's a dub style 'Version' mix that takes the track further into vintage Rhythm & Sound territory.

Review: Emotional Rescue can be relied on to dig up obscure, left of centre dance gems and serve them up to newer, wider audiences. Adu's reggae-pop cut 'Burkina Faso' is a great example, re-purposed for the dancefloor without any of its original flavour lost in the overhaul. A

Review: Throughout the late '70s, Ruben Alexander regularly collaborated with the Brentford Disco Set (aka The Soul Defenders, The Brentford Road All-Stars, The Brentford Rockers) who were one of the main in-house bands of the Studio One recording studio and label at 13 Brentford Road, Kingston 5, Jamaica W.I. They were essentially made up of the same group of musicians which included Vin Morgan, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, Bagga Walker, Cedric Brooks and Pablove Black. Alexander's skillful mastery of the saxophone dominates the A side version of 'Jah Light', and then the B.D.S. let the good times continue to roll on the B-side dub version.

Review: After two utterly essential releases on ae Recordings and Primary Colours in 2021, Altone once more delivers the goods for Lempuyang. The label's eighth release brings together two of the most respected heads in the business on remix duties. Altone's deep & pulsing title track 'Vortex' gets Yagya's glacial treatment on the A-side. 'Customization' on the flip gets a Bluetrain rework; with Steve's trademark Special Edition Dub giving the track a dancefloor edge.

Review: There's a beautifully symmetrical aesthetic to the latest Lempuyang release that totally mirrors the impeccably positioned and delicately balanced sounds going on in the grooves. Two of the most consistent producers of the last few years - Altone and Gradient - produce creatively related tracks, the former named 'Day Drama' and the latter taking on 'Night Drama'. Then they hand their respective tracks over to each other for remixing duties and bingo, a pretty vital 12" is created, a gorgeous set of shimmering dubs on the A-side, and some heavyweight business for dark rainy nights on the flip. Both producers employ a modern day dub flavour to their minimal, moody techno, with it probably being fair to say that the influence of Maurizio and the Basic Channel label is fairly significant in the worlds of both. Altone's sound is a little grittier and seemingly fizzing with radioactivity, decaying and disintegrating as each offering proceeds, where there's something a bit more spartan and linear about Gradient's grooves, that seem to undulate and reverberate almost invisibly, propelling these exceptionally mixable, enjoyable DJ tools along almost under their own momentum. Nice work all round.

Review: Horace Andy is one of the most recognisable voices - and names - in reggae. His catalogue is a real treasure trove of gold and 'Money Money' from 1982 is always one of the most heavily played. Of course one of the reasons it is so well known is because it is the source of a legendary sample by Massive Attack on one of their earlier records. The lyrics, about money being the root of all evil, will forever remain relevant, as will the sounds around them. The version is longer and just as essential.

Review: Even before you hear the first beat, there is something incredibly exit about seeing the names Male - a pioneering beat master and pivotal figure in the early emergence of the dubstep sound - with Joe Armon-Jones, talented musician and master keys man. A Way Back comes on Aquarii, Armon-Jones's own label with him on keys and synths, Mala on drums and bass and Maxwell Owin featuring on 'Oh Lord'. Review: When composing the tracks featured on his first release on Anthony Naples and Jenny Slattery's Incienso imprint, Mister Saturday Night and Vanity Press alumnus James Bangura reportedly drew inspiration from long, late-night teenage driving experiences. There's certainly a 'speeding through canyons under a blanket of stars' feel to 'Barred Entry', a hypnotic techno journey rich in restless kick-drums, hissing ride cymbals, hazy organ loops and delay-laden chords. He flips the script on 'Mixed Signals', delivering a dubbed-out slab of mind-mangling breakbeat house hedonism, before blurring the boundaries between high-octane electro and breathless techno on 'Monterrey'. To round things off, he adds reverb-heavy ambient textures and yearning synth-strings to a crunchy dub techno groove on EP standout 'Wichita'.

Review: B. B. Seaton aka Harris Lee Seaton is one of those reggae vocalists who appeared on a dizzying amount of records. He has over 450 credits on Discogs and 22 albums. 'Dancing In The Moonlight' from 1986 is typical of his sound and brings an electronic feel to dub and reggae. An original will cost you the thick end of 200 quid so this reissue is well overdue. The A-side here is seven-plus minutes of reggae disco funk with a killer bassline, proto-house claps and back and forth vocals that just get the dancefloor going. A version and an instrumental close out the package, which arrives via Studio 1.

Review: Beatconductor serves up a cheeky white label that is masterfully laidback and sunny for those hot and lazy days. Despite the source of the bootleg being one of the most famous tunes in pop history, Beach Fanatic does a good job or working it into something fresh. The original vocals roll over ice-cold beats and hits and make for a real hypnotic piece. A dub of 'Good Vibes' is also included of those who like it more heady. Drop either of these to an outdoor crowd with a beer in their hand and the results will be magic.

Review: Dubious dub with a dash of dithery delay comes by way of bass comrades Beam Up and Bukkha, new stalwarts of Jamaica's everlasting dub movement. By any proportion, this is a straight up soundclash set to wax, courtesy of new pushers Seven45. Beam Up's 'Double Trouble' brings up the dub pace to a swung exercise in near-dancehall via domineering one-shots and sub bass, while Bukkha's 'Double Trouble' amps up the melodica, rasta grumblings and rimshots for a rumblier and more upbeat affair. Review: We don't think that the title of Beatconductor's latest edits and reworks EP is meant to suggest that he's bowing out (and we certainly hope he isn't). Instead, it's most likely a reference to the heart-aching, end-of-a-love affair lyrics at the heart of the tracks he's chosen to rework - and in some cases rebuild from scratch. Check first 'Neither One Of Us', where a poignant, echo-laden vocal from a soul classic rises above a head-nodding electronic groove and fuzzy analogue bass, before admiring the piano-laden, loved-up mid-to-late '80s house-not-house vibe of 'Simmer Down', which sounds like a rework of an old Whitney Houston gem. 'Simmer', meanwhile, is a boogie bass-sporting chunk of R&B re-cast as an 80s soul/disco fusion number.

Review: It's time to pop on your speedos, grab a paddle board and head out to the Isle of Jura for another limited 12" of sweeter-than-honey lover's rock and roots. Melody Beecher is the vocalist on this most lush of packages and 'Movie Star' is the tune. It has gorgeously shiny chords of digi-dub beats and organic claps while her vocal is articulate, heartfelt, warm. A dub version pairs things back and then an extended 12" reworks the good bits into something more handy for DJ deployment.
