Moblack Gold Vol V
ACN - "Creatures" (6:10)
Emanuele Esposito - "Tuwani" (feat Mavhungu) (7:27)
Eden Shalev - "Cantos De Dennadon" (feat Cantos Des Baobab) (5:00)
Simo Moumen - "Samsara" (7:27)
Review: .Naples-based Afro house label MoBlack returns with the fifth edition in its various artist series titled Gold, tapping some of the scene's heavy hitters for their unique style of contributions to the catalogue. ACN opens up with the entrancing spiritualism of 'Creatures' on the A-side, followed by some of Emanuele Esposito's hypnotic polyrhythms on 'Tuwani' (feat Mavhungu). Over on the flip, Eden Shalev will elevate you with the truly life-affirming vibes of 'Cantos De Dennadon' (feat Cantos Des Baobab) and finally Simo Moumen treads deeper into moodier territory on the heady 'Samsara'.

Nothing's Gonna Make Me Stop (dub) (7:05)
Summer Haze (dub) (6:08)
Summer Haze (12" mix) (5:53)
Review: Hello to Nine Teas, a new label making its debut on these pages. And we couldn't be happier about that as Ambrose cooks up some quality deep house sounds on this sizzling Nothing's Gonna Make Me Stop EP. The title track is a loose jumble of warm summer chords and funk breaks, with perfect vocal samples up top. What's not to like? After a dub with plenty of jazz infection comes the steamier and more direct 'Summer Haze'. It's still rough around the edges and high on dusty soul, but is one to get the floor going early doors. The 12" Mix ups the party feels to close out a winning EP.

OUT-SLD (4:35)
IN-SLD (4:33)
BAD-SLD (4:46)
SLD-EFFECTS (3:51)
Review: Those with even a basic knowledge of Italian dance music will have come across Alex Neri productions before; during the 1990s, he recorded loads of house (and less frequently, techno), under a wide variety of aliases. In 1991, he donned the Axe Corner alias (alongside studio buddies Adriana Dodici, Marco Baroni and Pietro Peretti) and delivered Tortuga, an EP of moody blends of house and techno that now sound surprisingly far-sighted. A-sides 'OUT-SLD' and 'IN-SLD' are both forthright but funky techno outings whose bleeping lead lines and thickset grooves pay tribute to the then-massive bleep & bass sound (albeit without the colossal sub-bass and dub reggae influences that style was famous for), while flip-side cuts 'BAD-SLD' and 'SLD-Effects' deliver tougher, late-night takes on the organ-rich Italo-house sound.

B Love - "Thumb Milk" (5:34)
Rokko - "Sunset Frequency" (6:11)
Mathijs Smit - "Backwards" (7:33)
Herra - "Thesis Trax" (5:30)
Review: Picnic tends towards flaunting the eclecticism of the British underground, standing in stark opposition to conformity. B Love, Rokko, Mathijs Smit and Herra come through for their latest V/A here, each with their own unique style and flavour to the four-way table - whether they work in deep house, techno, or the cheekier side of speed-garage-ambient. As 'Thumb Milk' says in the pre-drop moment of pause: "do what you feel, when you feel like it". Such is the exact feel of this EP, from the idyllic chordwork of Rock's 'Sunset Frequency' to the organic organry of 'Going Backwards'.

Take You For A Ride (Mike Millrain mix) (6:14)
Move Your Body (Ross Couch mix) (6:15)
Move To The Groove (7:21)
Review: Plastik People boss Mark Cotterell keeps up the good form he sowed in 2022 with his first EP of 2023. It comes on Rhythm Vibe and features two more of his well-designed and well-swung garage-house groovers. 'Take You For A Ride' has choppy drums and hits with fresh piano stabs and soulful vocals and 'Move To The Groove' then gets a little deeper but with similar ingredients. A Ross Couch mix takes it into more airy and floaty territory while Mike Millrain's mix of 'Take You For A Ride' brings the 90s vibes.

Giorgio Morderer - "E-MC2" (The Gathering mix) (6:58)
Chez Damier & H2H - "Tomorrow Now" (J Gabriel & Mojo District remix) (8:30)
Review: Deep house doesn't get any better than when it's from scene-pioneer Chez Damier. The US legend has been finding the most sensuous and emotive sounds for decades, not only as a producer but also as a label boss. His House of Chez label cooks up some more goodness here with his own collab with H2H opening up with mystic Middle Eastern melodies drifting over smooth beats. Damian Rausch's remix then brings something more heavy and El Kazed heads off to the stars on waves of cosmic synth lushness. Last of all is Italo legend Giorgio Morderer with the gloriously soulful 'Engery.'

Review: DJ Kawasaki went big on love performances with his last album One World back in 2021 and the resulting tunes mixed up fine house vibrations infused with immaculate jazz-funk instrumentation. He is back now and in top-notch form with a new 7" for At Home Sound in Japan. There is more of a disco feel to this one with the cosmically minded 'It's Your World' kick off on the a-side and then the just as good but differently groovy 'Step Out' taking care of the b-side.

Christian Thomas - "Local Motive" (7:04)
Review: Chicago-based minimal imprint Tied returns with an exclusive vinyl release, inviting talented artists from around the world. Enzo Leep takes the helm on the A-side with 'Interplanetary Voyager' a pulsating and entrancing journey that propels you through the vast expanse of space and time, destined to ignite any big room or festival. Jacobo Saavedra follows with the explosive 'Dawner' a hypnotic blend of deep, bouncing basslines and captivating vocals. On the second side, Tied residents Ciphr and Snad join forces once again on 'Rainbow Chip', an electrifying groove that pushes boundaries and finally Christian Thomas concludes the EP with 'Local Motive' a sublime and velvety heater that delves deep into sonic bliss.

Coal In My Chest (Frankey & Sandrino remix) (5:36)
Review: Frankey & Sandrino go together like tea and cake, like clubbing and expensive water, or like DC10 and v-neck t-shirts. They are an accomplished pair who know exactly what they are doing in the studio and how to get the biggest reactions on the dance floor. For this new outing, they find themselves on Sum Over Histories with three more tech house cuts full of tension. 'Der Sprung' is cold and steely, the abstract sounds making for an austere listen while 'Libelula' has a more empowering feel on chunky marching drums overlaid with confident synths. 'Coal In My Chest' is a cinematic ambient piece.

Much like picking flowers, the EP puts across the feeling of being 'in the zone', with the tracks seeming to flow seamlessly through similar keys and timbres, all while nailing a raw, real, even ancient feel.

Review: HandsonWax dropped a great first EP and has kept up the quality with a second and now third 12". It is label head or heads HandsonWax who are at the buttons again for this one which opens with some full-on jazz house that comes with busy chords and classic vocal samples. 'Do You Play Baseball?' is more ageless house music that is well-versed in the classics but with plenty of fresh musicality and two more equally impactful yet tasteful jams appear on the B-side, with the intense and steamy 'Jack's Club Control' our pick of a good bunch.

Kirik & Zone+ - "New Way" (7:09)
Zone+ - "Xpander" (5:45)
Review: Ten years since his first drops on Body Parts et al, Kirik can easily be considered a mainstay of the Eastern European minimal scene, and his Uzvar label has kicked back into action in defiance of the pressure foisted upon his Ukrainian homeland. The latest drop on the label finds him teaming up with Zone+, offering up some charmingly beautiful cuts that place musicality in front of functionality. Don't be mistaken, these tracks all groove and shuffle with the floor in mind, but the shimmering synths on 'Well Well Well' and the hushed pads and keys on 'New Way' all speak on an emotional level, which can only bring magic results when deployed the right way in the dance.

Not My Problem I'll Be Dead
Baby Batter Bingo (5:37)
Not My Problem, I'll Be Dead (4:30)
Have A Good One (4:56)
Awesome On Mars (5:30)
Review: Chris Korda continues to fuse her acerbic digs on human culture with quirky, polyrhythmic minimal house with this latest release on YYK's No Label series. Not My Problem I'll Be Dead takes aim at the shoulder-shrugging adults of the world right now who are watching the planet's ecosystems decline while continuing with business as normal, and she presents these ideas with her usual devilish comedic streak just to land the point with even more flair. The vocoder run on 'Baby Batter Bingo' is catchy as hell, not least when matched with snappy organ licks and crisp drums. The title track heads off into machine jazz territory which might remind people of Akufen's diversions as Horror Inc, not a million miles away from the sound Korda is exploring on this EP.

Love Story (Vs Finally) (Paul Woolford 2023 extended mix) (5:43)
Love Story (7:52)
Review: 'Love Story' is one of the most classic tunes in all of house music. It was written by Layo & Buschwaka who heard the original 'Finally' by Kings of Tomorrow and wanted to tweak it to their own ends so mashed it up with further samples from Dave, Nina Simone and Tati Quebra-Barraco. It's a rousing, heartwarming dancefloor trip of the highest order and who better to remix it than the always on fire Paul Woolford. His extended 2023 edit brings all the best bits to the fore and ensures we will be hearing this one all summer long. No complaints here.

Olsvanger - "Darkroom Dubz" (7:29)
MYKI - "Jammonia!" (7:17)
MYKI - "Vermountia" (6:25)
Review: After appearing on a run of compilation releases, Olsvanger makes a fully-fledged EP outing with MYKI for this classy split 12" on Kalahari Oyster Cult. Of course the label carries a certain weight in its vibe, so you should have some idea of what to expect - that productive seam where deep tech house and trance crossover so everyone can let their limbs get nice and loose around the speaker stacks. Olsvanger's tracks veer from the sleek, techy chord pulses of 'The Triss' to the quirky, playfully dark 'Darkroom Dubz', while MYKI brings all kinds of trippy signal processing to the sounds inhabiting 'Jammonia!' and keeps the tempo up in the process. 'Vermountia' is no slouch either, clearly geared towards those who want their wiggy trance gear fast but elegant, which is not always the easiest combination to find.

Paul Rudder - "Her Dream Road" (Kresy Mellonized mix) (6:46)
Review: Exploited is one of those ever-present labels that have never made big headliners or had breakout anthems, but that's probably helped it stay relevant rather than getting chewed up and spat out by the hype cycle. Label head Shir Khan is back here to present a 36th Black Jukebox EP, with Paul Rudder & Kresy serving up the tunes. Their first collab is warm Euro-centric deep house which then gets remixed by Kresy into a 'Continuum mix.' On the flip side, Rudder goes it alone with another warm, well-designed and catchy house roller in the form of 'Her Dream Road'. This time, Kresy serves up a heady Mellonized mix to close out.

The Sound Of Garden: Selection Vol 1 Part 2
Mihai Pol - "Sugar Rush" (7:00)
Francesco Maddalena - "Breath Of Air" (6:21)
Giuliano Lomonte - "More Time" (6:51)
Sublee - "Day Six" (6:44)
Review: Leading the way for minimal sounds in their hometown of Venice, Caposile present the second volume of their The Sound Of Garden series with another four high-quality workouts aiming at the subtler kind of dancefloor. Mihai Pol is up first with 'Sugar Rush', a trippy delight with bouncy bass and shimmering synths garnished with an iconic sample. Francesco Maddalena ups the tempo and creates a swirling dream of garage house-meets-jazzy ambient that should grease up the dancers a treat. Giuliano Lomonte locks in for a heady ride through gated chords and teasing patterns with elegance at their core, and Sublee drops something rougher with the old-skool stylings of 'Day Six', a boxy jam that would sound right at home on Nu Groove.

The Signal Prevails (6:29)
Review: As the co-mingling of tech house and trance continues apace, we've reached the point where prog is fully back on deck and Space Lab are absolutely here for it. The continuously joyous, rave-minded party and label are in thrall to the unifying sounds of richly melodic, trippy club music, and Bristol-based producer Remotif is ready to give them what they want, not least on ecstatic lead track 'Substation Fever'. Adam Pits holds true to the overall vibe of the track while offering his own nuanced kind of trance-out on the 'Cascade Remix' before we flip over to savour the hot and steamy 'Hi Tek Lo Life' with its rowdy 90s house jack and expertly woven atmospherics. 'The Signal Prevails' switches stance for a slow but meaty breakbeat joint laden with a synapse-tingling array of pings, tweaks and wriggles for the wide-eyed massive.

With that in mind, Rez19nineteen hears a full-on resurrection of the EP Word To The Wise by Sceneshifters (under a different name), in doing so revitalizing the freshness of UK house in its entirety. Or at least, our enthusiasm for it. Proper retro vocal shouts, garage house beats, and alt-mixes make for a sweet trip back down memory lane, as if rubbing the dirt of the Denon lens and taking just one last snap of a long-foregone rave.

Now the Russiann pair have arrived on Multi Multi after teasing the connection with a compilation offering in 2021. Review: Elevated Senses is the new series from the prolific Berlin-based producer Todo Kunst aka Zug (aka Gruvaldo among many others), this time exploring such concepts with the third eye, premonitions, telepathy and other arcane subjects. On the A-side you've got the deep groove of 'Tercer Ojo' followed by the late night affair of 'Premonition' - both on a housey tip. Over on the flip is the subtle computer funk 'Telepatia' and finally 'Seres De Luz' is a contemplative IDM affair that's perfect for drifting beyond the afterhours.

Review: Super Discount was the hugely influential 1996 debut album by Etienne de Crecy. Several more volumes came and helped to define the French scene of the ear and they remain great inspirations to this day as De Crecy's work very much propagated certain other genres, from scratchy filter-house a la Daft Punk to the jazzier house genre of St Germain. This second volume is packed with plenty of names who helped to define the early French electronic scene such as Alex Gopher & Julien Delfaud, Philippe Zdar and DJ Mehdi. It's raw electro house that fizzes and spits with potent dancefloor scuzziness and energy even now.

His debut album in 1996 brought all new sounds and references and set in motion a revolution that spawned everything from classic French touch to jazzy deep house by Saint Germain via what went on to become the Ed Banger-aligned electro house of Justice et al. It all started with the first volume of Super Discount and carried on through further volumes such as this third one which is as searing and vital now as ever.

Review: Just as it says on the tin, Balance Music presents a stunning mix by Tim Green, a prolific artist and DJ, with his skills in the latter department put on full display on this, his first ever mixtape here. Featuring eight exclusive tracks by Green himself, as well as a remix of Underworld's classic 'Two Months Off', this mix shows off Green's advneturousness, blending deep house, techno and ambient.

Review: Jake Shears has signed with Mute and his first project for the legendary label is his new album Last Man Dancing. It draws from is lifelong love of club culture and is bar far his most ambitious work to date. A close and high-profile mix of collaborators including Kylie Minogue, Jane Fonda and Amber Martin all feature and the lead single has already proven a big success. The rest of the record finds Jake roller-skating his way through pop culture with glam rock, funky disco bass, life-affirming melodies and big grooves all making it a memorable ride.

Michal Martyniuk - "New Things" (feat Yanika - Eric Kupper remix) (6:18)
Review: As the title suggests, Eric Kupper has indeed spent a lifetime in dance. This vast 24 track collection celebrates that worthy career in sound and does a fine job of laying bare his influxes, and influences. His fine studio skills are on show across the music which also shows his skills as a remixer. This is a second volume but is one no less superb than the first with top class originals next to his own spins on bona-fide greats such as Whitney Houston, Earth, Wind and Fire, Curtis Mayfield and Moloko.

Earth Dance Volume 1: Africa
Nibakhulu (feat Lizwi)
Ashe' (feat Morris Revy)
The Old Ones (feat Taola)
Africa Me Llama (feat Ziphezinhle Celeste)
Review: Antonio launched his own label Tribal Winds all the way back in 1998 so big up to him for still serving up new releases over a quarter of a century later. This one is a killer, too - a worldly melange of influences from house to Afro, disco to funk. 'Nibakhulu' kicks off with a hefty tribal feel then 'Ashe' (feat Morris Revy) gets more percussive. 'The Old Ones' (feat Taola) rides on funky drum patterns with lush string sounds and big claps powering it along and last of all 'Africa Me Llama' (feat Ziphezinhle Celeste) comes with fresh percussive patter and jumbled drum funk. Each of the tunes gets a side each to play out and really make its mark.

Review: Discover the second volume of the Confluence series from the Parisian label Lowless, which explores the more mental and esoteric fringes of underground techno. The double vinyl release features ascendant producers such as Simone Bauer who presents the futurist hypnotiser 'Iperbolica' as well as Daniel(i) serving up the peak time atmospherica of 'Brandzeichen', in addition to Akob's high tech entrancer 'Fractal Jungle', the ever reliable Polygonia with the mind warping polyrhythms of 'Messing' and Sindh with the off-kilter brain bender that is 'Kohe Mondi' among others.
