Review: This repress from Digital Tape Recordings shines a nice light on the oft-forgotten microgenre of breakstep, and 24Hr Experience just as nicely show off their penchant for representing the sound with a jazzy big bandy palette. 'Jazz From The Heart' is heartily ripped straight from the DAT, and contains punchy strings, clavichords, and trumpets. 'Take Me Up To Bed' converts the prior track's sultry jazz mood into sexy speed garage, while 'Not Gonna Let Ya' and 'Into The Night' channel full Todd Terry phibes to the Nth degree.

Mantra (4:42)
Gone Loopy (3:13)
Review: Digital Tape Recordings take it al the way back to 1994 here with the timeless early garage sounds of Dub Essentials Part 1 from 24Hour Experience. It captures the essence of UKG at the time and was first released on the definitive Nice N Ripe label. It has a range of sounds from the soothing depths and soulful samples of 'Feeling's Mutual' to the more clipped and bouncy 'Deeper (5am mix)'. 'Scatter' then layer sup jumbled perc and US house styles with rich organ chords and 'Mantra' again keeps it deep and rather sleazy with some filthy bass. Last of all is the slinky sound of 'Gone Loopy' to round out a classic.

Fighting Fools (6:47)
My Life (5:55)
Review: Trouble Maker Adam Curtain and kindred spirit soldier Ste Roberts launch their Adam & Steve project with this delightful trip down bleep lane. Rolling at a cool mid-tempo, loaded with space, bulging with subs and swaggering with rolling breaks, both 'Fighting Fools' and 'My Life' hit with ageless dancefloor charm. The former playfully brings UKG elements into the mix while 'My Life' hits with a certain early 90s b-boy swagger that could easily be compared to the Blapps Posse. Get to know!

Hyperfunk (S Gurley remix) (6:05)
Review: Antonio had a string of classics back in the glory days of Locked On Records. As one of the seminal labels as UKG matured and new ideas started coming into the productions, Locked On has a stamp of authority around this music you just can't argue with. 'Hyperfunk' was amongst Antonio's biggest tunes, and here you can nab it in a newly remixed form by rising star Bklava, backed by a classic version of the tune by certified UKG legend Steve Gurley. At a time when garage is riding high once again, it's good to be reminded of the classics, but even better when you get a fresh spin on them.

Mud (Control Freak remix) (5:49)
Review: Austrian fracturist makes his debut on Control Freak with 'Solidify', a stark set of abstract club flavours. Wholly unclassifiable - as we've come to know and love from the man - each cut could sit in a number of selection ranges from techno to ghetto. 'What A Mess' is an upbeat stamp-about that's rather Photekian in its nature, 'Woodpecker' is a loose-limbed strut that flexes around the UK funky axis while 'Glyph' is a sparse sojourn into a 23rd century dub techno. Rounding up the EP we have the wonderfully wonky 'Mud' and a killer floor-burning remix from the label to sign out. Solid.

Review: A six-track UK garage smorgasbord comes courtesy of Supervision, making it very clearly known that their artists are masters at replicating the time-honoured practice, at least in garage, of 'not overthinking it'. From the off - BOn's 'Coal-Mining' - we're struck by the charmingly loose rhythmic quality of this EP, which rails against the glossy pomp of 'nu-garage'. Familiar names such as MJOG crop up with dark breaks-inflected fillers, while further highlights include the bassliney 'Here Come The Pretzels' by Glockta and the glitchy, sultry, stop-starty wobbler 'Tell Me'.

Review: By now everyone knows Time Is Now is a sure bet when it comes to the freshest new garage, breakbeat and all-round smart, headsy party gear, and so we pay attention when a fresh name crops up. Bluetoof has been spotted here and there, on a split 12" with Soundboy Cookie and on an Accidental Meetings compilation, but this marks one of their biggest releases to date, which kicks off in style with the big, booming and spacious roller 'Alakazam'. 'Perilous' takes things into gnarly, darkside 2-step, while 'That Got Dark' goes to town on the cool and deadly breakbeats. Interplanetary Criminal steps up with a hollering remix of 'That Got Dark' that opts for bashy 4x4 as the rhythm of choice, and makes an absolute monster in the process.

Soundboy Cookie - "Mic Professional" (4:56)
Review: Southend-on-Sea party collective Gather are back with a quick follow up to their soon sold out debut offering STM back in March. It's another four track split EP with two tracks each by Soundboy Cookie and Bluetoof, who kicks off with the louche, sax flecked depths of 'Mistakes.' The Gradient mix is more doom laden with darker bass, and Soundboy Cookie then 'Brooklyn Swing' drops in some cheeky grooves and wonky chords to really pump the party. Last of all is the kinetic 'Mic Professional' with all its spin backs, stripped back beats and womp-womp bass. Delicious stuff.

Review: Long dormant has laid the tried but true practice of dubstep and garage artists sampling classic horror movie dialogue, pre-drop. We're thoroughly happy to hear that new Peaky Beats sublabel Brainjuice have gone and resurrected this zombie for us. This four-tracker from the label hears label heads Peaky and Vel carefully and creatively work in as-yet unknown samples to the stew; some kind of Frankensteinish exclamation on the dubstep A1 laments the feeding of a monster "human brains", while the breakstep A2 'Bacon Dance' hears more timestretched, dystopian vocals amid wobbles. 'Don't' leans more into the kind of melodic dubstep that likes to sample R&B acapellas, and is the most refreshing of the lot.

Review: British producer Burland and Ghanaian vocalist Zongo Abongo join forces here for UK to GH, a new collaboration that collides the respective backgrounds of each artist. Reggae, highlife, dancehall, UK bass and rave all meet in a world of fresh rhythm and melodic invention. 'Telephone No Wire' opens with a feel-good highlife sound on a 2-step beat with vocalist Adotey Johnson in fine form. 'Nyura' heads to the club with weighty bottom ends and enchanting melodies then things get darker on the flip with 'Try To Test' exploring another take on 2-step with hints of UKG and grime overlaid with catchy vocal hooks. 'Last Chance' pairs dancehall vocals with downtempo breaks for a superb conclusion.

Remember (6:44)
Review: Constant Sound co-owner James 'Burnski' Burnham delivers a stonking pair of garage-flecked house tracks that offer up no nonsense dancefloor attitude in spades. 'Shout' is all about its monster rhythmic framework, with economic splashes of synths on the side simply maintaining the flavour and a properly full on old skool breakdown. Flip track 'Remember' leans a little further towards UK garage with its sugar sweet female vocal snippets, but the central groove hustles and bustles along with maximum weightiness, making it suitable for any number of differing dancefloors.

Review: As London In Transmission declare themselves - run by two geezers, both frequent ravers on the London underground scene - you should have some idea of what to expect from this record. It's the fourth drop on the label following releases from the likes of Christian AB, and the vibe is trippy, bleepy, ravey strains of old-skool outboard house music with a little of the minimal era's cheekiness etched into its bones. That's especially true of 'SSC (21 Edit)' by MIDI Drifter, while elsewhere you might hear the odd wigged-out ingredient that gels with the contemporary trance-house phenomenon. Either way, this is crafty, chunky gear to get dirty dancefloors greased up good n' proper.

Review: OK, so these are some of the most fun tunes we've heard this week. Just a few days after his last outing on Distant Horizons, Chavinski has been busy again mashing up garage, happy hardcore ad house. 'Get 2 Get Her' has a euphoric pitched up vocal over booming kicks and scraping hits that all make for pure dance floor elation. 'Weight Of The World' then layers up bright melodies, twisted and turbo bass stabs and another fine happy hardcore style vocal. It barrels forwards and brings prop good vibes, bruv.

Riding On A Cloud (4:52)
Review: Endangered Musique kicks off with a high-quality reissue of an EP that deep house heads will either already know or soon grow to love. It was written by Jose Chinga in 1994 and is an alias of an artist better known as Brothers' Vibe aka Tony Rodriguez. The opening tune 'Love Is What You Need' is also the most well-known - it's US garage with low-slung drums and grainy pad work with a simple but effective vocal. 'I Got You' picks up the pace with shuffling drums and a grinding lead before the warm 90s house sounds come to the fore again on 'Let It Go' and 'Riding On A Cloud'. Lovely stuff.

Review: The Mancunian tones of Swamp81's resident MC Chunky are well known to those who tune in to the label's Rinse FM show on a regular basis. However, this debut EP, forwent any kind of vocal showcase for the kind of hefty, refined fusion of garage and techno we've come to expect from Loefah's empire. Arriving as a 12" doublepack featuring four tracks, The Chunky EP shows Chunky to have the production chops to match his skills on the microphone, showcasing a wide range of influences channeled through a uniquely dark mood; "Decca" is a straight up piece of rolling deep house with a shadowy basement vibe, while "Experiment 727? recalls the syncopated techno of Bambounou or Boddika's leaden beats, while on the second 12?, "Thang" is a masterclass in stripped back garage mechanics, and "Rugged" provides a lo-fi beat that ploughs the darkest recesses of instrumental grime for inspiration.

Review: The Club of Jacks label has found real favour with house heads everywhere. It's been slow in getting to six releases thanks in part to the pandemic but the quality of the music has never been an issue. This is a second EP of 2022 from the eponymous production team and after garage influences last time out, here they bring hardcore deep house. 'The Hoovers Track' has raw rave synth stabs, 'Fall On Me' rides on bouncy drums with yelping 90s vocals, 'Rub-A-Dub' has a funky 2-step sound and 'Watch It' gets sleazy with some face-melting bass.

Wuthering Heights (4:03)
Review: Like his friend and sometime collaborator Tim Reaper, Coco Bryce is now a man in-demand amongst rave-focused house and techno labels. There's a simple reason for that: his revivalist 1990s jungle, hardcore and D&B sounds have appeal far beyond the drum & bass scene. Here he returns to one of those imprints, Lobster Theremin, for the first time in two years, bringing with him four more retro-futurist delights. We're particularly enjoying the echno, dub-style motifs and crunchy jungle breaks of 'DLP' and the rushing, melody-driven rush of 'Velocity of Love', but others may prefer the rumbling bass, jazzy keys and tactile vocal samples of 'Twenty One Lies'. Closing cut 'Wuthering Heights', a surprise deep electro number, is also superb.

Review: Cortese hail from Manchester, but Time Is Now hail from Germany, and the trans-European dialogue implied in this comes with a sense of mutual appreciation. For a good while now, German pushers have been appropriating UK styles into their repertoire. They've made an exceptional choice on this slice of future garage from the Mancunian pair, whose 5 chosen tracks from the 'Wrong Train' EP echo everything from Burial to, well, a cleaner and less lo-fi version of Burial. Jokes aside, theirs is a garage sound so completely unique in its dreaminess, cleanliness and moodiness - with its lowpassed vocals popping out like grannies to the shops - it's clear that the only aim Cortese have in mind is to sedate, sedate, sedate with their swung flows and junglist curveballs (don't miss the last tune, whatever you do).

Review: Plastik People boss Mark Cotterell keeps up the good form he sowed in 2022 with his first EP of 2023. It comes on Rhythm Vibe and features two more of his well-designed and well-swung garage-house groovers. 'Take You For A Ride' has choppy drums and hits with fresh piano stabs and soulful vocals and 'Move To The Groove' then gets a little deeper but with similar ingredients. A Ross Couch mix takes it into more airy and floaty territory while Mike Millrain's mix of 'Take You For A Ride' brings the 90s vibes.

Review: Set your phasers to garage house, because Plastik People are back in action with true believer Marc Cotterell at the helm. The evergreen sound of big, bashy, bumping drums and sweet, soulful organ chords is as vital as ever in Cotterell's hands, and on 'C's Groove' he's flexing some especially funky wandering bass skills to get the party juiced up good and proper. On the flip another Plastik People regular Danny J Lewis is busy bringing a deeper kind of flavour with cool and deadly chord chops which nod to Mood II Swing, albeit with plenty more fizzy FX and sound design tweaks darting around the hard shuffle and MIDI sax parps.

It's a celebration of the UK's rich heritage of electronic music with the plunging bass and massive thwacking hits of 'Quasar' kicking off. There are dusty jungle breaks to 'Dust Particle', twisted dubstep contortions on 'HAL9000' and fizzing broken beats with a real urban menace on 'Deckman.' Closer 'The Abyss' is a collab with Gav that rides a more zoned-out and atmospheric groove and completes a varied and vital EP once more from this crucial underground label.

Review: Bang on trend grooves from the Vivid camp, exploring the current fascination for all things that intersect both the garage and breaks genres. Lead track 'Wicked & Wild' is the one that leans furthest into UKG territory, its bumpy bassline and MC-style vocal giving it heaps of energy and attitude. Flip side instrumentals 'Push Past It' and 'Ronin' meanwhile, evoke the early 2000s spirit of breaksteppers such as Horsepower Productions, the latter especially maintaining the bassline pressure and adding it to the more hardcore vibe of rawer, sampled percussion. Maximum respect!

Perhaps the most famous version is the rolling, bass-heavy two-step flex of the "Live Garage" mix that opens side B, but there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere. The driving, jazzy-but-stomping "Words To Give By" version has been annoyingly overlooked over the years, while the "Tambourine Dub" is deliciously sweaty and driving in the best possible way.

Review: A melting pot of UK garage, house and bass, DJ Swagger's latest release on Berlin-based label, 777, is a fascinating exploration in structure and chaos. Opening track, 'Thanks Felix', moves at lightspeed - a thrilling race through a gritty arrangement of blunted kicks, shifting in and out of focus, moving between order and disorder. 'Fingerclut' emerges with an instantly more house-facing feel - a satisfyingly hypnotic groove spirals in a circle motion, featuring a cyclonic gathering of subtle flecks of percussive variation over the course of the track. Offering a spliced, glitched-out take on contemporary bass, 'Final Bout' journeys through moments of airy weightlessness before being thrown back into the growling, driving bass section of the track. The perfect tension builder, 'Full Cycle', is an ingenious tease of a track, skillfully building up to, you guessed it, even more build.

Review: From Germany with a sledgehammer, man like Swagger returns to Dr Dubplate's Original Pirate Material with a feisty four-pack. 'Fleg' (which rather sweetly translates to 'nursing' in his mother tongue) runs the gauntlet between boshing house jams ('Sssweat', 'Ghos') dubby steppery ('Confu') and all-out, smoking 808-driven, body shaking mayhem ('Crotch') If you know Swagger's sound, you'll already be all over this. If you don't, you're in for a treat.
