Review: Much loved Scottish synth pop gang Chvrches are known for getting weird and wonderful remixers to bring their own interpretations to their albums. For this project, they went big and deiced to ask the legendary composer John Carpenter to continue, and much to the bands delight, he did. He flips 'Good Girls' alongside his creative partners Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies into a soaring anthem with sinister and swaggering but crunchy production. Chvrches then return the favour by flipping Carpenter's 'Turning The Bones' into a chilly bit of spacious electronica.

Review: German outfit Cluster were pioneers in the world of prog rock, Kraut and experimental early electronic music some 50-odd years ago. Review: This is a remastered re-issue of a rare Canadian synthpop and wave LP from a peak moment in Montreal during the 1980s. Degrees Of Freedom was founded in 1984 but only released their eponymous album here four years later in 1988. Despite their early gestation period, the band commanded a rabid small fanbase, and this reissue comes through to prove it with an exclusive new poster collating the group's gig flyers over the years. A worthy reissue for an obscure yet no less beloved band, we can only guess their beautifully crude electropunk and cold synth balladry will continue to captivate present listeners.

Review: A warm welcome back to Norwegian duo Dibidim, whose 2005 debut album - recorded during their time living in Liverpool - was finally reissued by Oslo's Snorkel records in 2019. The rave reviews that previously impossible-to-find classic garnered inspired the pair to head into the studio and record a belated sequel. Superheaven is heady, sun-splashed and pleasingly horizontal in tone, mixing live instrumentation - piano, horns and so on - with eccentric electronic sounds, warming synths, and nods to ambient, 90s downtempo, electronica and the kind of opioid soundscapes that defy easy categorisation. It's brilliantly blazed, endlessly entertaining and pleasingly slow-motion. In other words, it's a terrific return.

Review: Minimal Wave's Cititrax imprint has had one of its most prolific years to date in 2013, with the release of excellent albums from Streetwalker and The KVB, and a KVB remix EP featuring the likes of Regis, Silent Servant and Shifted. The Veronica Vasicka-helmed label looks to expand on that success with a number of forthcoming releases planned over the next few months commencing with the debut EP of Facit, whose Mat At Duvorna EP is described by the label as "quintessential melancholic Swedish wave at its finest." Comprised of Joakim Karlsson and Mai Nestor on vocals, the Gothenburg native Karlsson has previous form as Jocke & Elliot, under which name he released an electro-inspired 12-inch on Swedish label Kust Musik in 2010. this new project seems to be more downtempo in nature, with a sound that most resembles a modern day version of French synthwave duo Deux, making them perfect for the stable of labels run by Vasicka.

Review: Given her length of service (her first appearance as a guest vocalist was way back in 1992), it seems extraordinary that The Love Invention is officially Alison Goldfrapp's debut solo album. It's a typically sparkling, colourful and entertaining affair, taking the synth-pop sound that marked out her long collaboration with Will Gregory as Goldfrapp, and injecting it with a big dose of dance-pop energy. It's hardly a radical recalibration of her sound, though the influence of some of her collaborators - most notably co-producer Richard X (who was involved in some of the album's strongest moments) - is certainly evident. Goldfrapp naturally stars throughout, channelling her inner Roisin Murphy, with highlights including the sub-heavy, house-influenced synth-pop strut of 'So Hard So Hot', the vibrant 'The Love Injection' and catchy opener 'Never Stop'.

Review: Amongst those who love New York's early '80s no-wave/post-punk scene, Ike Yard's 1982 debut album has long been regarded as something of an under-appreciated classic. Thanks to this reissue from Superior Viaduct, you can now judge for yourself. The band's sound is noticeably a lot more minimalistic than many of their contemporaries, mixing throbbing, low-slung basslines (think ESG or Liquid Liquid) with sparse, pulsing electronics, weird synthesizer sounds and stylish male vocals. It's a unique and hugely atmospheric sound that's as intense and paranoid as it is spaced-out and otherworldly. The album is full of highlights, but our picks include the percussively awkward "Loss", the creepy and clandestine "Kino" and the fiendishly alien sounding "Half A God".

Review: Fresh from releasing the superb Pink Flamingos album on Dement3d, In Aternam Vale returns to Minimal Wave. This time round, he's not alone. Each of the tracks features the breathy, stylish vocals of Madrid-based Belarusian, Anneq. Her sleazy, whispered refrain is the headline attraction on the throbbing, industrial pop-meets-techno hustle of "Je Ai Dissous", while she also chats seductively over the undulating arpeggio lines, restless drums and dystopian atmospheres of "Tendencia (About Blank Version"). The ambient-leaning "V6" take of that cut is also hugely inspiring, while the Page R version of "Je Ai Dissous" is a dark, atmospheric and intoxicating celebration of legendary '80s "computer musical instrument", the Fairlight CMI.

Review: Sound Metaphors sub label Thank You continues to explore lesser known niche records from visionary artists of the 80s by revisiting this single from Jah Wobble. 'Blow Out' is a shoe-in for any Balearic set worth its salt, pairing boxy drum machine rhythms with wistful keys and some blue-eyed soul vocal turns for a meandering ride through prime mid-decade sonic territory. Bleepy where it counts, just a little dubby around the edges and smooth up top, it's a refined, long form cut which sounds great with a modern remaster. Backed with the instrumental version on the flip, it's a no-brainer for diggers who might have balked at paying top whack for an original 85 edition.

Review: Four months after the series' debut release landed in stores, Bordello a Parigi has readied a second Buone Vacanze EP. Like its predecessor, the four-tracker is packed to the rafters with fresh cuts inspired by the colourful, synth-heavy sounds of mid-80s European electro-disco. Ali Renault is the first to slap on the 'factor 50' and reach for an ice cream, with his 'Galactic Boy' delivering waves of cheery synth-stabs, pulsating Italo-disco bass and glossy synth sounds aplenty. Senor Chugger then steps up with 'Smell The Ashes', a throbbing slab of Italo-disco revivalism rich in cascading melodies and echo-laden drum fills, before Back From The Wave/Umatik doffs a cap to Bobby Orlando and the Pet Shop Boys on 'Endless Crossing'. Finally, CT Kidobo lays down some righteous sleaziness in the shape of minor-key miracle 'Racing Thoughts'.

Review: Amongst collectors of post-punk era cassettes, Solid Space's sole album, 1982's Space Museum, has long been a sought-after item. While scarce and hard to find, the demand is largely down to the music contained within. Combining bright and spacey synthesizers with cheap drum machines, fuzzy guitars and vocals musing on science fiction and isolation, British DIY musicians Matthew Vosburgh and Dan Goldstein (previously both of of Exhibit A) created something surprisingly magical and alluring despite its lo-fi creation. For proof, check this first ever vinyl edition from Dark Entries, which thrillingly also contains two previously unreleased cuts from the duo's archives.

Review: Nothing but gorgeousness seems to characterise the work of the Minimal Wave imprint over the recent years. It's a label that is both unpredictable and continuously elegant in its choice of reissues. This time, it's a wonderful unearthing of Soma Holidays cult-hit, Shake Your Molecules. The Franco-American duo was part of Brooklyn's clique of artists throughout the 1980's, and although their sound is firmly representative of that era, the tracks are still ridiculously fresh and seductive both in their melodies and vocals. The title track is a sort of synth-pop tune gone wrong in a good way, where drugged-up lyrics meets morphing synths and metallic drum machines, whereas the Dub cut could easily be played in most techno DJ sets these days. On the B-side, we have the charming, atmospheric glow of "Too Many People" and "Art Dimension", the top pick in our opinion and one which is screaming to be be remixed into a contemporary house tune.

Review: It has been almost fifty years since Sparks released on the venerable Island Records, notching up landmark hits like 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us', but they've been as consistent a force since then as any act you care to mention. The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte is as bold and uncompromising as anything the band has ever done and displays great song craft, stories with intricate lyrical narratives and plenty of near perfect pop tunes distilled into just over three minutes of real musical potency. This all means Sparks remain as smart and essential as ever in their field - as if you didn't know.

Review: Newcastle cold pop duo Troth have always been one to watch if you're on the pulse of the city's underground experimental scene, thanks to their dreamy sound, hypnotizing live sets and a propensity to induce zone-out states in whoever chooses to listen. Their latest LP 'Forget The Curse' carries the same lo-fi, folk and synthwave sensibilities as their rather obvious influence Hype Williams, building a clairvoyant dialogue between the vocals of Amelia Besseny and Cooper Bowman. Channelling the idea of dream logic into their music, we are further charmed into doing the duo's bidding, through such instruments as an affected sax and high-cut piano echoes ('Forget The Curse').

Review: Italia Synthetica 1981-1985 is a reissue of a 2013 compilation which details a selection of synthpop, new wave and minimal electronic bands and artists from Italy in the early 80s. Spittle Records did divine work in sourcing and collating this collection ten years ago, not least since it's what they do best. Conceived and presented by veteran Italian singer and producer and beloved member of the scene himself - Fred Ventura - highlights like Neon's 'Lobotomy' and Actor's Studio's 'Dancing Alone' do well to represent the punkish and slapdash attitude of this flourishing yet short-lived scene. It nevertheless paved the way for the rich musical landscape Italy's underground enjoys to this day.

Review: Formed in Leeds, England, in 1981, Vicious Pink have at various points been described as 'provocative', 'sexualised', and 'catchy'. If you've never encountered the outfit before, then it's probably going to take about two seconds to realise how accurate those points are. Not least as West View opens with one of their most successful singles, the super-chartable, but subtly suggestive 'Cccan't You See'. Those who are familiar with their oeuvre will probably have picked up on the fact this LP isn't in their back catalogue. Instead, West View is a retrospective celebration of this often overlooked early British synth-pop group, collating early and rare demos, remastering and re-releasing. The result feels transportive, authentic, and - even if you're just imagining what that show at legendary Leeds venue The Warehouse would have been like, in support of Soft Cell - vivid.

The Nation's Most Central Location is his fourth album, and explores the theme of the north-south divide in the UK and the broken promises of regional town development - brutal concrete expressed in musical form. Its eight tracks mix ambient, synthpop and industrial, with samples from documentaries, speeches and adverts making up its vocal parts. The album is a nostalgic and critical reflection on the past and present of his hometown, exclusively reflecting on its place in the nation.
