Review: Following some knock-out releases for Shall Not Fade and Last Night On Earth amongst others, 9th House comes to Running Back with a dazzling display of deep house perfection which stretches out across five tracks. 'Reuben' is a sprightly slice of 90s-tinted euphoria while 'Midas' tips further towards the bold melodic sensibilities of trance for a proper hands-in-the-air situation. At every turn this EP offers the richest harmonies and rhythm sections you just can't mess with - a truly steadfast, feel-good EP to get a sizeable mass of bodies moving in unison.

Blue Monday (dub) (5:05)
Review: Mancunian Kevin Gorman used to make some great minimal techno on his Mikrowave imprint but has since moved on to create some of his best music under the Adesse Versions moniker. With a slew of fine edits and remixes under his belt, he presents us with a killer cover and tribute that's set to be one of the summer's biggest anthems. A tribute to the seminal New Order classic "Blue Monday", Gorman retains the very same Moog bass and ARP strings from the original, over a groovy breakbeat and a vocal reminiscent of Bernard Sumner himself. It was an ambitious feat, but Gorman manages to pull of an impressive rendition here, which also comes accompanied with a handy instrumental version on the flip.

Review: The Analogue Attic microverse is defined by a unified commitment to the deepest ideas of where house music can head, and no one embodies that spirit better than Alex Albrecht. On this latest 12" he's heading into the velvet folds of low tempo chugger 'The Blacksmith' and downtempo dream state 'Coles Ridge' with elegiac piano sparkling atop fathoms-deep pads and the softest of percussion. This is house music as a vessel for pure relaxation and sentimental meditation, and across six tracks Albrecht offers up balm after balm to soundtrack oceanic realms of calm - a much needed tonic for the frenetic pace of modern life.

Serious: The Remixes
Serious (Michael Gray remix) (7:26)
Serious (Wayne Soul Avengerz & Odyssey Inc remix) (7:01)
Review: Donna Allen's 'Serious' is a stone-cold boogie classic whose acapella subsequently appeared in all manner of dance tracks from the early '90s onwards (most famously Strike's brilliantly OTT house classic 'U Sure Do'). Here 'remix-a-classic' specialists High Fashion get to work dragging the track into 2023, which will no doubt infuriate purists but delight those who have always longed for slightly faster and heavier mixes (the original rolls at around 110 BPM). Label regular Michael Gray steps up first with a tasteful, string-laden disco-house re-make that's actually quite radically different, whilst including enough of Allen's vocal and original version to make it familiar. Wayne Soul Avengerz and Odyssey Inc take a different approach, retaining most of the original instrumentation whilst upping the tempo and beefing up the beats.

Review: Although you can never be sure exactly what you will get when you see that a new Studio Barnhus 12" has arrived, you can be sure it will be good quality and almost certainly fun. The playful Sweden-based collective calls upon Ari Bald and CJ Scott for this latest outing and sure as hell it kicks off with the lush and uplifting loops of 'Detective Chimp' that take you ever higher. 'King Conga' is then a jazzy, percussive workout on a lovely jumbled and organic rhythm, 'Orangotango' as loose and disco-tinged drum shuffles and sci-fi synth details and 'Grape Ape' rounds out a charming, characterful EP full of colour.

Never Used To Be Better (6:18)
Million Mile Love (6:50)
Review: With his deliciously deep With You By The Lake 12" on UntilMyHeartStops still ringing in our ears, Arnaldo drops his first EP for Smallville for three years. Unsurprisingly, this two is a wonderfully fluid delight, with all three tracks offering a near perfect balance of lolloping grooves, glassy-eyed melodies and eyes-shut chords. A-side "Moving On" sets the tone, layering dreamy pads and cascading melodies atop a shuffling groove. He gets a little more forthright on the cymbal-heavy deep house pump of "Never Used To Be Better", before calming things down with the heavenly throb, woozy spoken vocal samples and cyclical melodies of "Million Mile Love".

Review: Alex Attias is the man behind the El Mustang Project and here he teases his upcoming album with a couple of new tunes on Visions Inc. As always, they find him fusing the organic with the synthetic to make for deep and silky house tunes that straddle genres and ages. 'Love Me Better' opens with a gorgeous vocal and rickety drums that ooze charm. 'Dream Drumz' gets a little more raw and edgy with pixelated melodic spirals and 'Life' gets old school. Cowbells ping about the mix as distorted bass and frazzled pads add texture to this subtle throwback jam.

Review: Short-lived group Azura, as you can pretty much infer from the name alone, made Balearic house back in the 80s. They didn't release much of it but what we do know about is gold. This one is a mysterious gem that finally becomes more widely available. It has all the hallmarks of this sound - finger clicks, breaking synth waves, seductive vocals and rasping basslines. The house version is the more driving and club-ready, while the Dream version is much more spacious and ambient-filled. Both brilliant.

Review: Mr. Ultrafino sent out a message with this new album which explains that Darryl Baalki is a super private person. He grew up just with his mother and his father's music collection. He believed it contained the entirety of the history of recorded music and went about making new sounds using samples of it. Whether that is true or not we don't know, but the music is quality. It's spiritual, deep, enchanting, jazzy house with a broad spectrum of emotions. There are late-night lullabies like 'Louis The Third' and more bumping but still cuddly cuts like 'Hear Me Up' amongst many highlights.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Marc Brauner's recent outings on Shall Not Fade were undeniably classy affairs, with the Berlin-based producer showcasing both hard-edged peak-time house and deeper, more melodious retro-futurist workouts. Brauner's first outing on Happiness Therapy sits firmly in the latter camp. The two most ear-catching cuts are the included collaborations with Tender Games: the sun-soaked, synth-bass-propelled al-fresco deep house funk of 'Amberjack' and the loved-up, piano-heavy rush of 'The Mission', which is as uplifting and celebratory as they come. Elsewhere, 'Call For Freedom' is a sax and TB-303-powered chunk of New Jersey garage nostalgia, 'What's Your Name' is a deeper and more intergalactic-sounding excursion, and 'Dangerous Game' is a breezy, enveloping chunk of turn of the '90s Italo-house revivalism.

Derek Carr is the gift that keeps on giving. Alongside plenty of fresh new tracks, the esteemed producer keeps on finding magic in his vault of hard drives This vast new collection of such treasure comes from the Pariter label across EIGHT sides of vinyl. These are all rare or unreleased tunes made sometime back in the late 90s and early 00s. They explore, in signature Carr fashion, deep and sleek techno with dubby chords, acid leads and plenty of spaced-out atmospheres that still sound as if they have been sent back from the future. Essential.

Review: Berlin deep house heroes Cinthie and Stevn Aint Leavn are back on their ever reliable Beste Modus imprint for its ninth edition and they aren't messing around on this one. Quality classic house vibes all the way - a timeless Windy City vibe dominates the A side courtesy of Cinthie, who serves up the sultry and swing-fuelled late night groover "Everything I Say" before taking it back to '94 with the dusty and soulful "Good For You & Me". On the flip, Stevn Aint Leavn is in fine form, too, particularly on the moody and bass-driven back room dub "Quins".

Review: Denney has always done a fine job of being a seemingly ever-present name without ever getting huge headlines. That can be a help to an artist's career, frankly, because those who are hot one minute are often not the next. Anyway, he shows his class is permeant with this new single on Rekids. 'Catch The Heat' has a throwback feel to it - steamy and warm pads, chunky mid-tempo drums and an impassioned vocal that reminds of Renaissance-era Sasha and Digweed. Nic Fancifully works it into a more straight-up tech cut and Frankey & Sandrino bring some progressive melodic magic to their version.

Operator Select (America, What Time Is Love?)
Review: Austin based producer Disco Nihilist makes a triumphant return to Running Back, having scored one of our favourite 12"s of last year with Running (Far Away). Two tracks shorter than his debut for Gerd Janson's reliably consistent label, but no less impressive, Moving Forward will captivate many from the moment the elasticated bass line of "House Rent Boogie" launches into action. From here, the track playfully swings from its jack hammering groove into moments of wondrously detuned synth solos. Alongside this, "Beatdown Drums" lays its rhythmic palette thick and hard, practically bruising your cochlea in the process, whilst flipside opener "Film Grain" is an equally intense exercise - though one that matches rasping hi hats with emotion laden keys. The tempo is eased to allow some respite on "Operator Please" a sprawling mass of thick 303 modulations and loose, tumbling drums.

Review: Thanks to a string of fine disco and gospel-fired releases and remixes for the likes of Midnight Riot and Lumberjacks in Hell, Alan Dixon has become a must-check artist. Here he makes his bow on Running Back with arguably his most arresting and inspired EP to date. The real star of the show is co-producer Darren Morris (a regular Ashley Beedle collaborator), whose dazzling solos surge from the speakers on the driving, 1989 style piano house rush of "Moments" (reminiscent of his work on Beedle's peerless remix of Bent's "Always" in the early 2000s) and the Balearic house brilliance of "Star Dance" (think Phillip Lauer/Tuff City Kids). The fun continues on muscular, Italo-disco influenced opener "La Danza" and the colourful, sunrise-ready soundscape "Ambient Braindisk".

Jon Dixon - "Mack & Bewick" (6:38)
DJ 3000 - "Summer 1995" (6:13)
Rico & Sonny - "The Beat" (6:44)
Review: Unlike its predecessors, which in turn showcased techno and electro jams, the third and final volume in EPM Music's 20th anniversary series of EPs looks to house music for inspiration. Of course, you'll find plenty of nods towards techno on show throughout, from the fuzz-soaked riffs and broken computer motifs of Eddie Fowlkes' hypnotic opener '1-2-3', to the fizzing, alien-sounding electronics and mind-mangling riffs of Rico & Sonny's rolling 'The Beat'. There's also an underwater-but-outer-space feel to Jon Dixon's pleasingly wonky 'Mack & Bewick', while DJ 3000's 'Summer 1995' is a gloriously retro-futurist slab of spacey house futurism full of warm analogue bass, sparkling chords and hands-in-the-air piano stabs.

It's a varied affair that pulls from a wide range of genres including leftfield, deep house, disco, Afrobeat, and even Balearic. Some of these tunes have already been picking up high-profile support from the likes of Leo Mas, Chris Coco and Danny Krivit - no wonder given that his last on the label sold out immediately. 'Sky Dive' is a nice loose limbed funky deep disco jam, 'Home Suite' has a superb new age flute lead and 'Missing Pixels' is a tribal Afro dancer. 'Mount Juniper' is the lively and tropical house number that has you dreaming of cocktails by the sea.

Review: Sketching out the physical space between one destination and the next, Eric OS's latest project, housed on his own label Space Trace, travels to the unknown outer edges of the universe. Kicking things off 'Mind Wide Open' follows the intergalactic course of a full-bodied, bassline-driven melody as it interweaves with celestial synths and pulsating percussion. 'Omen', the A2 track, has an instantly brighter feel - a habitable, plant-filled planet has been found amidst the depths of space, perhaps. On the flip side 'Shiitake' is an instant classic - a darkened melody intersects with punchy drums and cool-toned atmospheres. And finally, rounding things off we have the incredible electro track 'Liminal Space' - warm and enveloping, this is a perfect way to round off a night of deep interstellar travel.

Review: The Swedish deep house duo of Alexander Berg (Dorisburg) and Nils Krogh (Arkajo) aka Genius Of Time are back outside of their established Aniara imprint for the second time on Running Back since 2014's Juno Jam EP. It has been a long time between drinks, with Krogh pursuing some great solo stuff as Arkajo and Berg performing in Sebastian Mullaert's Circle Of Live. This terrific new EP features the bittersweet "Peace Bird" that follows through with warm Rhodes keys, woody percussion and an all-round lo-slung swagger. The spacey and understated "Smiling Into Eternity" follows through on the B side, followed by the reduced and emotive disco of "Rymd01". Great stuff once again by the Gothenburg-based duo.

Berlin-based Norwegian Henriku is next up to bring his own sounds into their world, and this atmospheric house and minimal exploration is hella impressive. 'I Do' works the floor into a steamy and hot house lather, 'Rush Fantasy' then gets a little twisted and freaky for later in the night and 'Pillow Talk' leans into a dusty Detroit house vibe. 'Nicotine 4 U' might be the best of the lot - a fluid bit of afterparty house with irresistible drums and warped neon lines.

Review: Fresh from delivering a solid three-tracker on Drum Chums, Hidden Spheres returns to Rhythm Section International with what could be his most expansive and hard-to-pigeonhole EP to date. The Manchester producer excels on the A-side with 'Tanzen', a pleasingly nostalgic, warehouse-ready affair available in two distinctive forms: the breezy piano-sporting, summery, analogue-rich deep house gem that is the spine-tingling club mix, and the sweat-soaked, sub-heavy jack-track that is the 'Mate mix'. Elsewhere, he opts for weighty sub-bass, looped stabs and vintage turn-of-the-90s deep house vibes on 'Mind Over Mate' and reaches for sparse electro-not-electro beats on the late '80s early morning brilliance of 'Not Of This World'. To round off the EP, Paula Tape opts for hands-raised acid house nostalgia on her fine revision of 'Tanzen'.

Josh Milan and Louie Vega are real heavyweights and as Soul Fusion they step up here to remix the legendary 'Little Orphan Boy' which is the second single taken from album 'This Is Brian Jackson', the veteran artist's first true solo LP in over 20 years. They do so across four different versions and give it a vintage treatment. The extended 'Two Soul Fusion' mix brings back golden era of Masters at Work with a Latin-infused percussion groove while the 'Downtempo' remix lets Brian Jackson's vocals ride over a stripped back but just as soulful arrangement.

Congratulations to Brian "Javonntte" Garrett, who this year celebrates two decades releasing mind-expanding deep house gold. His first 12" of 2018 sees him pop up on People Of Earth, a label that has previously delivered EPs from such scene stalwarts as Rick Wade, Patrice Scott and Kai Alce. Fittingly, Garrett is in a nostalgic mood on opener "Way Back", where his deep, dreamy and soul-flecked deep house groove is accompanied by a spoken word vocal reminiscing about the mid 1990s. Elsewhere, "Zodiac" wraps starbust motifs around a chunky, bass-heavy groove, "House Joint" is a bumpin' box jam rich in sturdy drum machine hits and swirling chords, and "Boom House" is a slightly tougher workout that boasts beats worthy of Derrick Carter or DJ Sneak.

There is a load of Jay Tripwire newness around at the moment and some of it is from his back catalogue and some of it is all new. Here the longtime minimal mainstay and Canadian scene-pioneer serves up a multi-volume collection of cult tracks of his from the early 2000s. They have a west coast tech house sound and are still future in design. The likes of Villalbos have long been banging these and they sit well with the days current underground sound. Acid, dub, tech, electronic soul and more all colour the grooves.

Review: So far, the best part of Jouem's career seems to have been shaped by the Mojuba imprint, a label that rarely ever puts in something below excellent, and one whose label heads curate diligently. The shady artist returns with the fifth instalment of the series, and "Anomalous Diffusion" kicks it off with a deep, meandering pulse that showcases the best of what dubby house has to offer; on the flip, "Kazumi Cycle" strips the whole amalgam down to a mystical and pensive whirlpool of fuzzy bass waves and slow drum machine beats that are wrapped in a misty fog of sonics. "Contagion" is our favourite piece, its subtle addition of semi breaks at the core give it something special, and place it a step above any other recent house turn we've heard. This is some deep gear - we can't wait for the sixth chapter!
