Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve & in excellent condition***

ACR have returned to post-punk-electronica megalabel Mute for a new 'partnership', ensuring that the entirety of their catalogue gets reissued. That being said, the unlike-anything-else-ever-heard-before band are also looking to the future, not shying away from releasing new LPs. Don't get confused; the LP '1982' was not made in 1982, it was made in the last few years, and will be released in 2023. Says it all really. Were the 80s simply better? We don't know, but perhaps a deep-dive into the album's themes can provide an implicit answer. Macuncian rapper Chunky appears throughout the moody industri-funk ensemble's new reverie, giving a present-day voice to a haunting spectre. Overall, though, you've got instrumental styles from Afrobeat, jazz, cosmic, disco, and of course, industrial post-punk, coalescing into a certain ration of wild, wild music - perfect for austere times ahead.

Blue Monday (6:40)
Blue Monday (dub) (5:05)
Review: Mancunian Kevin Gorman used to make some great minimal techno on his Mikrowave imprint but has since moved on to create some of his best music under the Adesse Versions moniker. With a slew of fine edits and remixes under his belt, he presents us with a killer cover and tribute that's set to be one of the summer's biggest anthems. A tribute to the seminal New Order classic "Blue Monday", Gorman retains the very same Moog bass and ARP strings from the original, over a groovy breakbeat and a vocal reminiscent of Bernard Sumner himself. It was an ambitious feat, but Gorman manages to pull of an impressive rendition here, which also comes accompanied with a handy instrumental version on the flip.

Serious: The Remixes
Serious (Michael Gray remix) (7:26)
Serious (Wayne Soul Avengerz & Odyssey Inc remix) (7:01)
Review: Donna Allen's 'Serious' is a stone-cold boogie classic whose acapella subsequently appeared in all manner of dance tracks from the early '90s onwards (most famously Strike's brilliantly OTT house classic 'U Sure Do'). Here 'remix-a-classic' specialists High Fashion get to work dragging the track into 2023, which will no doubt infuriate purists but delight those who have always longed for slightly faster and heavier mixes (the original rolls at around 110 BPM). Label regular Michael Gray steps up first with a tasteful, string-laden disco-house re-make that's actually quite radically different, whilst including enough of Allen's vocal and original version to make it familiar. Wayne Soul Avengerz and Odyssey Inc take a different approach, retaining most of the original instrumentation whilst upping the tempo and beefing up the beats.

Stanton Carlisle (5:30)
Navarone Again (5:16)
Review: Amor fati is one of the core principles of stoicism - translated into English as "love of fate", or "love of one's fate" - it should therefore come as no surprise that Amor Fati's production work seems to dig deep into atmospheres while still riding on the immediate infectiousness of tech. Split over two tracks, the EP is a real giver, managing to do multiple things at once and not drop a single spinning plate. 'Stanton Carlisle', for example, nods to toy box techno and sharp micro house, all razor high hats, stepping snares, and bounding energy, using friendly noises to develop an arrangement that really doesn't let up. Over on 'Navarone Again', we're in more of a synth wave dystopia, waves of retro harmony and slightly ominous choral vocals intermixed with a sample about leaders of the universe.

The Boogie (Ray Mang edit) (6:35)
Val, Vuw Ya (Ray Mang edit) (6:18)
Review: Balearic is perfected to near-Platonic form on this new split single from Joan Bibiloni, the Mallorcan artist and guitarist behind many such full-length masterpieces as 'Joana Lluna' and 'Una Vida Llarga I Tranquila'. Gouranga Music's re-licensing of Bibiloni's music here sees two new remixes by esteemed reworker Ray Mang; 'The Boogie' adds sheeny mega-production to Bibiloni's original, with tense chordwork and watery delays backing up a maddeningly restless instrumental. The ambient standout here, though, is the B, 'Val, Vuw Ya', on which Mang refuses to differentiate between pad, kazoo, tambourine and guitar, it's that washed out. A fascinating new release, straddling two disparate zones in Balearic music.

Jika Jika (The Odd Bits) (3:38)
Review: 'Jika Jika' is s super sassy version of Grandmaster Flash's iconic 'The Message'. This holy grail reissue from Vive La Musique has had a full remaster and features late, great South African artist Sipho Gumede in his 'Boogie Man' guise. For this one he worked alongside prolific 70s and 80s producer Greg Cutler with a Linn drum and Jupiter 4 synth recreating the famous basslines. Add in a mysterious rap vocal and you have a stone cold classic that will surely be well received in any setting. Flip it over for an extra jazzy synth version.

It is a powerful call to humanity as well as a summons to the dance floor that rides on irresistibly squelchy bass lines and with glorious disco drums and new age flutes. There is a strong original 70s vibe to this thanks to the jazz, funk, soul and disco melodies and some great vocal work that is silky and soulful. Next to the original comes some very useful remixes form the one and only DJ Spinna as well as Hugo LX.

Gay anthems don't come louder or prouder than this evergreen gem from Patrick Cowley and Sylvester. Originally released in 1981, just a year before Cowley's tragic death but heralding the arrival of the Hi-NRG era of electronic disco, it's as brilliant and visionary now as it was at its inception. Now the classic gets a respectful re-touch from Purple Disco Machine, who offers up vocal and instrumental versions on the A side before three original versions stretch out on the flip. The difference between the remixes and originals is subtle, but with ingredients this potent, who's to complain when setting the party aflame?

Review: Delfonic & Kapote makes a welcome return to their Illegal Jazz series. This is a seventh instalment and it's another bobby dazzler with four cuts all reworked for the dancefloor. Opening the party is 'Groove Head Rejam' with a low slung swagger, noodling guitar riffs and lovely glossy hi hats. 'Power Journey Rejam' is a deep one with chords to warm your heart and instrumental disco riffs to get you going before 'Imparable Rejam' brings a more steamy percussive vibe that is loose limbed and seductive. 'I Like Music Rejam' is a big party starter with horn stabs, lively vocals and wooden hits.

Review: Thanks to a string of fine disco and gospel-fired releases and remixes for the likes of Midnight Riot and Lumberjacks in Hell, Alan Dixon has become a must-check artist. Here he makes his bow on Running Back with arguably his most arresting and inspired EP to date. The real star of the show is co-producer Darren Morris (a regular Ashley Beedle collaborator), whose dazzling solos surge from the speakers on the driving, 1989 style piano house rush of "Moments" (reminiscent of his work on Beedle's peerless remix of Bent's "Always" in the early 2000s) and the Balearic house brilliance of "Star Dance" (think Phillip Lauer/Tuff City Kids). The fun continues on muscular, Italo-disco influenced opener "La Danza" and the colourful, sunrise-ready soundscape "Ambient Braindisk".

Review: Australian cutmaster DJ Bacon is on a relentless mission to bring you mash-ups, edits and flips of all shapes and sizes, and he's at it once again on his self-titled label with a reissue of his deadly Sweatin' On The Dancefloor 7". Cutting up all manner of classic funk, disco rap and more besides, the trainspotters out there could have a lot of fun dissecting every sample and cut that flicks in and out of the mix on both these tracks, but that turntable trickery doesn't come at the expense of the groove. These tracks will absolutely turn a party out given half a chance, and given how much the first pressing fetches, you won't want to delay on nabbing this one while it's around.

It's a varied affair that pulls from a wide range of genres including leftfield, deep house, disco, Afrobeat, and even Balearic. Some of these tunes have already been picking up high-profile support from the likes of Leo Mas, Chris Coco and Danny Krivit - no wonder given that his last on the label sold out immediately. 'Sky Dive' is a nice loose limbed funky deep disco jam, 'Home Suite' has a superb new age flute lead and 'Missing Pixels' is a tribal Afro dancer. 'Mount Juniper' is the lively and tropical house number that has you dreaming of cocktails by the sea.

Review: Texan psych-funk fun time outfit Golden Dawn Arkestra get some remix treatment via this double pack from Razor-N-Tape, which leads in with Austin Ato's positively dreamy deep house version of "Children Of The Sun". JKriv takes on "Cosmic Dancer" and makes it into a slick disco-fied workout that adheres to the RNT vibe, while Dicky Trisco takes the track and makes it into a suitably interstellar strutter heavy on the synth lines. Then then the second slab of wax offers up a side each to the original versions, from the Afrobeat-indebted "Children Of The Sun" to the sweet and starry-eyed disco of "Cosmic Dancer".

Let's Be Free (5:37)
Unconditional Love (5:56)
Review: Earlier this year, London's long-serving Heavy Disco crew re-ignited their re-edit series after seven years away via a fine 12" containing tasty reworks of killer boogie-soul and disco-not-disco cuts from Tavares and the Police. On this similarly essential follow-up, they return to their string-drenched disco roots. A-side 'Disco Amnesia' is simply superb, with the scalpel-wielding cockneys successfully extending a sweet, string-laden disco gem and successfully taking it to soulful new heights. Over on side B, 'Let's Be Free' is a tidy rearrangement of an electric piano solo-heavy disco-meets-jazz-funk jam, while closing cut 'Unconditional Love' is the kind of mid-tempo disco-soul sing-along that's destined to feature as the 'end of night tune' at many a forthcoming party.

Review: Fresh from delivering a solid three-tracker on Drum Chums, Hidden Spheres returns to Rhythm Section International with what could be his most expansive and hard-to-pigeonhole EP to date. The Manchester producer excels on the A-side with 'Tanzen', a pleasingly nostalgic, warehouse-ready affair available in two distinctive forms: the breezy piano-sporting, summery, analogue-rich deep house gem that is the spine-tingling club mix, and the sweat-soaked, sub-heavy jack-track that is the 'Mate mix'. Elsewhere, he opts for weighty sub-bass, looped stabs and vintage turn-of-the-90s deep house vibes on 'Mind Over Mate' and reaches for sparse electro-not-electro beats on the late '80s early morning brilliance of 'Not Of This World'. To round off the EP, Paula Tape opts for hands-raised acid house nostalgia on her fine revision of 'Tanzen'.

Review: For his latest outing on the Good Timin' imprint he set up some years back, Jex Opolis is joined by Ian D Knight. The St Louis-based performance artist notably makes his presence felt on "Look At My Car", delivering a vocal inspired by "consumerism and rampant motorism" over the NYC producer's superb, Padlock-inspired, boogie-dub groove. The Compass Point influence also comes to the fore on closer "Guitar Sands", where intertwining guitar and synthesizer motifs stretch out across a Larry Levan-friendly backing track. The EP's other cut, "Rimini Nite", successfully pays tribute to the halcyon days of Italo-disco. It's every bit as thrilling as the rest of this superb 12".

It's a textbook bit of floor filling r&b, disco and soul complete with a brilliantly well defined bass riff, soaring Philly strings and an empowering vocal from Johnson. On the flip, 'Feed The Flame' is even more celebratory with its big horns and stomping rhythms. Review: It's well known that People's Potential Unlimited boss Andrew Morgan has some serious crate digging skills. Even so, he continues to amaze with the obscurity and quality of the releases he chooses to reissue. Serious collectors have long sought out "Let's Ride" by guitarist Willie Lee Jnr under his occasional Junei alias. Originally released on 7" back in 1987, it's a killer chunk of synthesizer-heavy electrofunk blessed with some serious eyes-closed guitar solo action. Flipside "You Must Go On" - originally the A-side of the '87 release - is fantastic, too, offering a near perfect blend of sun-kissed Balearic attitude and smooth '80s soul grooves.

These are two stone-cold breakbeat classics and b-boy delights that come kissed by the sun and ready to get your party started. Review: Despite being something of a confirmed jazz-funk classic, Hubert Laws' "Family" was never released on a 12" single first time around. Curiously, the full version - contained on the A-side of this edition - only ever appeared on the veteran flautist's 1980 album of the same name. It remains, particularly in its original stereo mix form, a superb summer breeze of a jam, with a loved-up female vocal and punchy orchestration riding a sumptuous mid-tempo groove rich in rubbery slap bass and lolloping drumbeats. On the flipside you'll find the more obscure Mono Version, which interestingly feels a little weightier at the bottom end whilst allowing Laws' superb flute solos space to breathe.

Review: South Africa's Letta Mbulu has put out a vast amount of quality material in her lifetime, and although the singer was based far away from Europe, her music was picked up by the London massive during the mid '80s at clubs like Dingwalls and featured heavily in the rare groove digs. The opener "Sweet Julu" is now a London two-step classic, while other tracks like "Nomalizo" or "The Village" are more on the disco side, all of them filtered with a distinctly tropical edge! A top reissue!

Double Delicious EP
MikeandTess - "Preacher Man"
Oldchap - "Big At The Jazz Club"
Bully Boy - "Central Train"
Vibes4yoursoul - "Delicious"
Review: French label Act Of Sedition returns this week with another splendid 7' double pack. A1 is Mikeandtess with a nice edit titled 'Preacher Man' that's seriously Dusty and slo-mo as you like it, while Oldchap's 'Big At The Jazz Club' chugs along just as slowly with its locomotive and jazzy groove with rap vocals. Over on the second disc, Bully Boy gets the late night boogie-down vibes in effect on 'Central Train' followed by Vibes4yoursoul with the sunny and low slung goodness of 'Delicious'.

Solar Flair (10:24)
Heatwave (8:14)
Review: You best get the sunnies on for this one because it is a sweltering bit of funk fuelled disco with lashing of cosmic energy, boogie baselines and irresistible grooves. First up is the epic ten minute plus 'Solar Flair' with its slapping bass and withering sci-fi chords, long legged drums and prog leads. After that sensuous slow burner things pick up with 'Heatwave', a more direct and textured cut but one still dripping with Rhodes magic and plenty of celestial charm. Two red hot tunes on a vital 12" from Hi Quality Inc.

Review: Norwegian disco eccentrics Mungolian Jet Set have long-promised a follow-up to their jazz inclined 2006 debut, Beauty Come To Us In Stone. That it's finally arrived is something of a surprise - but not as much as the set's musical contents. While the Oslo-based duo have always been prone to mixing things up, few would have expected the curious yacht-rock vibes of "Bella Lanay" and "Ties N Downs" - or even the Sheffield bleep/noughties bass music cut "Shelton's On A Bender" - amongst the usual mix of inspired disco lunacy ("Prog Rocks & Moon Jocks") and far-out prog-disco epics ("Smoke N Mirrors"). But then this is Mungolian Jet Set, and anything is possible.

No, Stasera No
No, Stasera No (Mascio & Cosmo Re-Clap edit)
Review: Heading to stores in limited numbers with a 'no further vinyl reissues or represses in future' message to reiterate the need to grab a copy while you can, Sal Panzera's 1981 debut single has long been regarded as one of Italian disco's hardest to find (and therefore sought after) obscurities. The hype is warranted though. While it does boast some subtle synth sounds here and there, this is proper post-chic disco complete with rubbery, Bernard Edwards style bass, cut-glass disco strings, echo-laden drum fills, Nile Rodgers-esque guitar licks and a strong lead vocal from Panzera. The original seven-inch version is great, but the flip-side Re-Clap re-edit, which extends the percussive intro and groove-based sections (effectively delivering the 12" mix the track was always crying out for), is even better. Pre-ordering is recommended on this one, as it will most likely sell out very quickly.
