Review: Afrorack is a Ugandan producer whose self-built modular synthesis approach to making music has lent him much credo over the years, but perhaps none will lend him so much as The Afrorack, which comes as the latest and least deniable expression of his sound to date. Four tracks of traditional African rhythmatics merge with live sound synthesis and ghost-powered CV noodlings, producing an incredible foray into avant-garde electronics few could argue has ever been heard before. Whether it be caused by the trance-intoned 'Inspired' to the grit-covered 'Bass', Hakuna Kulala must be chuffed to have Afrorack form part of their catalogue, as his music is certainly among their best for representing the lesser-trodden and most criminally unsung corners of African electronic music.

Review: It's reductive to say that Dr. Steven T. Birchall's 1973 album is an exercise in academic electronica. Nevertheless, when the heads who don't already know get wind of the fact he used an EMS Putney (AKA a VCS-3), Ampex MM-1000 16 trk, DBX noise reduction, SpectraSonics Console, Studer A80 Recorder, Eventide Clockworks, Instant Phaser, Cooper Time Cube and EMT Reverb to achieve this stunner there's bound to be some note taking.
Plucked from a more innocent period in synthesised production, yet also one that was far more complex in terms of what was needed to achieve forward-thinking sounds, after pressing play you can't help but picture Birchall as some mad genius surrounded by vast arrays of machines, wires, plugs and intermittently blinking lights. In truth, the finished product is every bit that cosmic and explorative, a true testament to how much people back then thought the future would sound. Yet it's also very much a human feeling thing when heard today, its analogous tones both naive and familiar.

Review: Icelandic music producer Bjork, who requires absolutely no introduction given her massive contribution to electronic pop music over the last twenty years, finally returns with her new album Vulnicura on One Little Indian Records. Although the LP represents her breakup with Matthew Barney, there are vivid rays of light nested among the more dreary-eyed vocals and melodies. As per usual with her work, there is a distinctive personal touch to her songs. This is most vividly characterised by the droning style of her singing, a sort of juxtaposition when combined to the music below it. Expect an intricate blend of sci-fi electronics, break-ridden power beats and of course, plenty of hard ambience. Bjork's ninth studio album is another winner. This deluxe edition comes with a download code!

Review: When is a remix album not a remix album? When it's creatively driven by Bjork. The wonderfully titled Bastards might be a collection of reversions from her 2011 album Biophilia but it's clear all artists have been specially considered for their job and worked hard to subvert their usual motifs; stretching from the warped techno twists of 16-Bit's take on "Hollow" to the ghostly acapella of These New Puritans remix of "Mutual Core", this is one bastard you want in your life.

Review: With a track record that includes being part of Loch Lomond and working with Efterklang, it's little wonder that Peter Broderick has an innate gift for classical composition imbued with American folk tradition. Float was originally released on Type in 2008, and now enjoys a full remastering and repressing for Erased Tapes distinct enough to add the 2013 suffix to the title. It's a mesmerizing record inhabited by the arresting viola and cello playing of Amanda Lawrence, which calls out in a space of considered atmospherics and instrumentation that rumbles somewhere below. It's a fine chance to catch a sumptuous record of musical might fully rendered to play on all its strengths.

After all, the chosen producers involved are all heavyweights in their own right, and were certainly ready to step up to the mantle here. Opening with a pair of tracks made different by two of Brazil's most revered techno heads - ANNA and Wehbba - from there we get Berghain bass experimentalist Barker, the fury of Rrose, and percussive wonder of JLin, and that's before we come to the likes of Chris Liebing and Kangding Ray.

Review: There's something undeniably tactile about Japanese composer Ikeda's 'Ultratronics'. The bass is metallic and dense, the grainy and glitched-out synths ringing out in a mathematical tempo on tracks like 'ultratronics 05'. There's a philosophy of high art, a scene that Ikeda has dabbled in before with installations and exhibitions, that is a hallmark of Japanese electronica composers old and new. The album has just as many pared-back moments (like in 02 and 07, scattered throughout vocal samples of rocket and space radio transmissions) as it does hardcore electronic industrial thrashing (06 and 14 spring to mind for mind-blowing explosions of synths).

Review: Mike Paradinas aka U-Ziq brings us his latest release 1977, a journey through different domestic-majestic soundscapes, from the airy and atmospheric to the frenzied and glitchy. The tracks are a mix of old and new compositions, demonstrating the evolution of U-Ziq's sound over the years, while also presenting a subtly new sonic direction for the artist as he debuts music for a new group of label friends. Imagine classic Tangerine Dream combined with the balance and poise of Global Communication and you're getting close.

Review: American label Peoples Potential Unlimited has cared out its own superb niche in the world of heart aching, lo-fi funk. But here a new catalogue number seems to suggest a new series. It kicks off with French collective Spaced Out Krew and their timeless, boogie driven disco funk. The music was written during 2020 by Spleen3000 and Marius Cyrilou of Ceeofunk and right from the first note of 'Doudou Bourbon' it is pure class.
