When he released third album "Me Against The World" in 1995, Tupac Shakur was arguably the biggest name in hip-hop. As we now know, it wouldn't last, with the LA rapper losing his life in a drive-by shooting 12 months later. As tragic as his demise was, his music still resonates and this album - here reissued to celebrate its 25th anniversary - is arguably the best of the lot. Produced by an all-star cast of beat-makers (Brian G, Easy Mo Bee, Tony Pizarro and Moe ZMD included), the set offered a glossy and polished take on the then dominant gangster rap style while including numerous nods to R&B, swing and G-funk. Jorun Bombay is well known to beat freaks and hip hop heads for being as authentic and original as it gets. His work in the studio cutting up edits and crafting remixes is second to none. He works at a high rate too and now is back once again with a couple of tight reworks of feel good funk-breaks. 'Joyus' (remix) has a bit of a Brand New Heavies feel with acid-jazz licks, funky beats and seductive soul vocals. 'Good Morning' (feat Jah'Mila - Daylight mix) then comes on just as strong with more well defined drums, some expressive xylophone melodies and a deeper late night feel.

Review: 'Jika Jika' is s super sassy version of Grandmaster Flash's iconic 'The Message'. This holy grail reissue from Vive La Musique has had a full remaster and features late, great South African artist Sipho Gumede in his 'Boogie Man' guise. For this one he worked alongside prolific 70s and 80s producer Greg Cutler with a Linn drum and Jupiter 4 synth recreating the famous basslines. Review: Nestling comfortably within the DIY end of the underground music spectrum, Canadian R&B producer/performer Daniel Caesar (real name Ashton Simmonds) has steadily built a sizable online following without ever signing for a record label. "Case Study 01" is the Toronto artist's second self-released album (the first, "Freudian", dropped in 2017) and sees him offer up another set of slick blends of hip-hop, R&B and modern soul. His status as a rising star is emphasized by the presence of Pharrell (yes, the Pharrell) on the superb, Neptunes-produced "Frontal Love Muzik" and the appearance of Brandy on superb duet "Love Again". It all adds up to a pleasingly emotive, well-produced set of songs that impresses from start to finish.

Review: Australian cutmaster DJ Bacon is on a relentless mission to bring you mash-ups, edits and flips of all shapes and sizes, and he's at it once again on his self-titled label with a reissue of his deadly Sweatin' On The Dancefloor 7". Cutting up all manner of classic funk, disco rap and more besides, the trainspotters out there could have a lot of fun dissecting every sample and cut that flicks in and out of the mix on both these tracks, but that turntable trickery doesn't come at the expense of the groove. These tracks will absolutely turn a party out given half a chance, and given how much the first pressing fetches, you won't want to delay on nabbing this one while it's around.

The revered beat smith is a valuable best friend when it comes to modern breaks remixes of old skool hip-hop and funk. He's served up plenty in his time and 'Ladies Quest Vol. 1' focuses solely on revered hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, flipping two of their most revered instrumentals, 'The Jam' and 'Check The Rhime', with vocal acapellas from legendary femme lyricists Lauryn Hill ('Lost Ones') and Bahamadia ('Uknowhowwedu'). The effect is powerful and as well as proving dancefloor heat, there is some real soul in these here beats.

Around 2005 when the first edition of Curtain Call came out, we were reflecting on Eminem's meteoric ascendance to the premier league of hip-hop. Back then, all his beats were either produced by himself or with Dr. Dre, and there was a definitive arc to his sound. Moving on, there have been lengthy pauses, sideways swerves and surprise turns as Marshall Mathers follows his own path, and as such it's a fine time for a second greatest hits compilation to cast a glance back over some of the best Eminem joints of the past 17 years. There are plenty of dazzling guest spots from Beyonce and Rihanna to Snoop Dogg and Kehlani, but the best is when you can hear Em himself in full flow, doing what he does best.

They came from Forty Five Kings Collective members Deejay Katch and Toby Gee, who returns once more here for the label's third fresh 45rpm. Review: As the lynchpin of The Beat Junkies and a staple part of the Stones Throw legacy, J.Rocc has been diligently digging since his youth in the early 80s. While his long and winding career has taken in ample mixtapes, production stints, breaks collections and more besides, he hasn't released so many of his own standalone beats. That makes A Wonderful Letter a cause for celebration, as Rocc pens a love letter to Los Angeles through a tapestry of tracks which show off his skills as a studio wizard as well as a deck technician. Just listen to lead single 'L.A. Anthem' featuring LMNO and Key Kool and you'll understand all you need to about the angle Rocc is working on this, his second full-length album.

Review: Youtuber-cum-American Indie sensation Joji became a quick TikTok sensation back in 2018 with his career pivot into music. Bursting onto the charts with 'SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK' Joji has created a space of sad-boy indie pop that resonates with young people around the world. Don't mistake that as a declaration of immaturity; 'Smithereens', his fourth studio album opens up with the critically acclaimed ballad 'Glimpse of Us' that took social media by storm. 'Smithereens' is a gloomy, yet ethereal exploration of Lo-Fi hip-hop instrumentals with Joji's pining vocals - very much the male answer to Billie Eilish in the arena of understated pop. The album is understated, though has it's experimental side on the second half of the project with stuttered vocals on 'YUKON (INTERLUDE)' and a light trap instrumental on 'NIGHT RIDER'. Review: The fine trio of K Le Maestro, Lancecape and God Damn Chan come together on this scorching 7" to serve up their own interpretations of some fine source material. "Track 1" is all dusty MPC, dreamy Far Eastern melody sounds and bumping hip-hop beats that wash over you like a lovely day dream. "Track 2" is a little more heavy hearted, with a dragging baseline buried deep and some sombre trumpets up top for all the jazz feels. "Track 3" is somewhere in between - part romantic instrumental, part soul stirring beat, but all gold. We're told it will not be repressed, so act fast to get this one in the bag because it's pure killer.

This one is slightly different as 'Life is like a Dice Game' was a demo and one of the firm fan favourites from the legendary New York mic man, taken from his undeniably best period - the Illmatic era. Now 30 years old, it gets revisited and completed properly with Freddie Gibbs and Cordae, who were 11 years old and not born when the track was initially recorded in 1993. The unfinished original version leaked in 1995 so to finally have it officially completed is epic.
