Review: Lo Borges arrived in 1972 as the debut solo album for Brazilian songwriter Lo Borges. He was recording Clube da Esquina with the legendary Milton Nascimento and Beto Guedes in the same year and there are plenty of shades of that alaric here. It's a record with lush texture and lots of superbly intricate guitar playing that brings the heat and transports you to a scorched earth world in South America. The vocal arrangements are lush, too, with lots of confounding instrumentals and clever progressions that you will enjoy trying to unpick. Add in melodic brass and jazzy organs and you have a real pearler.

Review: There was never any doubt back in 2001 that Kings of Convenience had real talent. The Norwegian folk-pop duo made no secret of their remit when they unveiled their debut album, which comes with a truly appropriate, spoiler-alert-worthy title. Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe are so soft and gentile, in fact, that the main criticism here is arguably the ease with which Quiet Is the New Loud can float calmly into the background of a situation.

Commit your full attention, though, and you realise what a triumph it was. And still is. Inspired by the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Belle & Sebastian, and Elliott Smith, this record became something of a centrepiece for an entire musical movement (see also: Turin Brakes) which even borrowed the name. Dive into the catalyst again, then. We promise you won't regret it.

Review: Hailing from Asheville, North Carolina, MJ Lenderman can be found playing guitar in Wednesday when he's not working on his own solo material. Following 2017's Him and a small clutch of self-released items, Boat Songs represents the most polished and developed set of songs from Lenderman to date. There's a country twang in the Southern stylings of his guitar tone, but overall this is classic US indie song craft which isn't afraid to be catchy and upbeat as well as resolutely rocking. If you like Guided By Voices, there's a good chance you'll be into the feel good dose of Boat Songs.

Review: Hailing from Taureg, a culturally distinctive region that straddles the Algeria-Mali border, Tinariwen are undoubtedly one of the most storied and internationally celebrated North African bands. They've been performing since 1982 and releasing recorded music since 1993, and in that time have developed a signature style that blends electric and amplified takes on traditional Taureg music with Western styles such as blues, Amerciana and country music. That unique musically vision is joyous, infectious, entertaining and - as you'd expect - a central feature of Amatssou, their latest album. It leans slightly more towards country - at least in comparison to some of their albums - and was made in cahoots with a string of guest musicians, most notably Daniel Lanois.
