Jorun Bombay is well known to beat freaks and hip hop heads for being as authentic and original as it gets. His work in the studio cutting up edits and crafting remixes is second to none. He works at a high rate too and now is back once again with a couple of tight reworks of feel good funk-breaks. 'Joyus' (remix) has a bit of a Brand New Heavies feel with acid-jazz licks, funky beats and seductive soul vocals. 'Good Morning' (feat Jah'Mila - Daylight mix) then comes on just as strong with more well defined drums, some expressive xylophone melodies and a deeper late night feel.

It is a powerful call to humanity as well as a summons to the dance floor that rides on irresistibly squelchy bass lines and with glorious disco drums and new age flutes. There is a strong original 70s vibe to this thanks to the jazz, funk, soul and disco melodies and some great vocal work that is silky and soulful. Review: He's hardly prolific, but DJ/producer Del Gazeebo has been offering up occasional re-edits, mash-ups and bootleg reworks for longer than some of us have been alive. Here he begins 2020 in fine fashion with two party-hearty reworks guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving. Aside "Barbara Don't Love Me" is a bouncy, subtly beefed-up take on a horn-heavy 1960s soul/rhythm and blues classic that sounds like it would go down well at parties that love Northern Soul. Flipside "Dat Ting" meanwhile is a head-nodding take on a punchy soulful reggae cut underpinned by weighty bass and tight hip-hop beats.

Review: Dojo Cuts are a heavy Australian funk unit, renowned for delivering crisp, tight and funky ones since 2008 - the stench wafting off these ones is pungent to say the least. 'Ain't Go No Reason' is their latest offering; a two-tracker featuring the instrumental backing and production of Ed Halls, Guy Kilty, Nathan Aust, Sasha Imrich, and finally - the delectable vocals of Roxie Ray. The track describes a certain anomie, 'ain't got no reason to fight / to cry / to play', an amusingly prescient theme to set to a disco backing. 'Uptight', meanwhile, brings back the sense of meaning with a loosening of the figurative grip, with fast laboured breakbeats - or shall we say, breakbeasts - and tingly bass licks underpinning Ray's liquidly improvisatory vocals.

Review: This is a long awaited reissue for fans of modern funk and soul. It originally came back in 2018 and sold out in quick fashion. Now it is back via Cannonball Records with originals costing somewhere around L100. Big Lee Dowell And The Cannonballs Feat. Maxim Moston are behind 'What I Done Wrong' which has a lo-fi aesthetic and authentic old school feel - the dusty drums and soaring strings could be from the early 70s, and even the vocals have an authentic and original soul feeling. The groove is catchy and the Jazzy Wurly instrumental is full of extra funk.

Review: Despite being something of a confirmed jazz-funk classic, Hubert Laws' "Family" was never released on a 12" single first time around. Curiously, the full version - contained on the A-side of this edition - only ever appeared on the veteran flautist's 1980 album of the same name. It remains, particularly in its original stereo mix form, a superb summer breeze of a jam, with a loved-up female vocal and punchy orchestration riding a sumptuous mid-tempo groove rich in rubbery slap bass and lolloping drumbeats. On the flipside you'll find the more obscure Mono Version, which interestingly feels a little weightier at the bottom end whilst allowing Laws' superb flute solos space to breathe.

Review: South Africa's Letta Mbulu has put out a vast amount of quality material in her lifetime, and although the singer was based far away from Europe, her music was picked up by the London massive during the mid '80s at clubs like Dingwalls and featured heavily in the rare groove digs. The opener "Sweet Julu" is now a London two-step classic, while other tracks like "Nomalizo" or "The Village" are more on the disco side, all of them filtered with a distinctly tropical edge! For this ninth entry on the label, he invites Portuguese producer Ruas to whip up some nuggets, give them a nip, a tuck and a boost where it counts, and the results are outstanding. We just love new soul and jazz, with too many reissues filling up our charts these days, and especially if it sounds anywhere near as fresh as this. "Si Me Faltaras Tu" is a straight-up soul groover, made with LA's sun-kissed charm and South American sensibilities, while "Parachute" is the stand-out piece, all lo-fi and stripped-back, but filled with enough mystique and garage sensibility to render it comparable to the very best psych acts of the 70s. Review: If you're looking for an introduction into the world of original 1970s and '80s gospel funk and gospel soul, you can't do better than Tone B Nimble's ongoing Soul is My Salvation series of double A-side "45s". This is the eighth edition in the series and contains two more thoroughly obscure workouts. On the A-side you'll find Bibleway Church of God in Christ's 'Since Jesus Came Into My Life', a fizzing gospel-soul stomper that was first featured on the organisation's 1980 private press LP What Do You Say About Jesus. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Eliezer Mass Choir's 'Where He Leads Me', a more disco-tinged number that reminded us a little of the Joubert Singers' much-loved 'Stand on the Word'.
