Review: A-Ton is a new label from Berlin heavyweights Ostgut Ton, designed to focus on "ambient, archive and alternative music". They've pulled off something of a coup for this debut release, persuading British techno legend Luke Slater to open up the archives of his '90s intelligent techno project, The 7th Plain. Chronicles I boasts a mixture of previously released and unheard material, which moves from glistening, outer-space ambience (the near perfect "Boundaries", "Grace"), to fizzing Motor City techno ("T-Funk Statues"), via intergalactic intelligent techno, dusty downtempo grooves (the jazzy hip-hop rhythms and ambient electronics of "Slip 7 Sideways"), and melodious IDM.

Carl Finlow - "Optogenetic" (7:17)
Detroit's Filthiest - "Werewolf" (5:21)
Modulator AKA Freddie Fresh - "Promars" (5:27)
Review: EPM20 Ep2 goes off on an electro tangent here. On this one, we have veteran producer Cisco Ferreira aka The Advent teaming up with his son Zein on the ferocious electro dystopia of "Strangeform" and as if that was not enough, another legend, the one and only Carl Finlow appears next with the abstract, cybernetic beats of "Optogenetic". Over on the flip, we have someone by the name of Detroit's Filthiest (quite an accolade!) who is in fact Motor City stalwart Julian Shamou (Motor City Electro Company) known for his work as 313 Bass Mechanics or Digitek, and longstanding hero of the Midwest Freddie Fresh should need no introduction; his contribution here under the Modulator alias is the deep mind IDM journey "Promars".

Review: Madrid-based hypnotic techno expert Alfonso Lopez, known as Aiken, has released music on some of the genre's finest imprints such as M_Rec, Semantica, and local label Non Series. His latest offering, The 'Mist' EP, comes from his own imprint, Timeline, and consists of four impressive cuts. On the A-side, the title track and 'Scatter' offer cyclical tools with an intense, strobe-like attack that pushes the listener into mental overdrive. On the flip side, 'Spread' feels influenced by Jeff Mills and 'Rhetorical' delivers yet more powerful peak-time energy.

Tracks Volume 3
Amato Y Mariana - "Quieres Bailar" (5:39)
The Sixteen Steps - "Montgat" (6:46)
His Dirty Secrets - "Structures" (6:15)
Further Reductions - "Another Stranger" (4:56)
Review: BOOM! Our favourites, Cititrax, roll the third editions of Tracks out onto our shelves, and the results are unsurprisingly strong on this excellent various artists comp. It's a mixed bag of skills, as per usual, and the sounds are those of a new NYC, fuelled by a new sort of post-industrial sensibility. Amato Y Mariana open with the tight beats and groove of "Queires Bailar", followed closely by the ominous compositions of the EBM-flavoured "Montgat" from The Sixteen Steps. On the flip, His Dirty Secrets bleeps out some morphed acid on "Structures", and "Another Stranger" from Further Reductions churns out a slow, mild-mannered house experiment with its roots clearly planted in the coldest of waves. Sick.

Stanton Carlisle (5:30)
Navarone Again (5:16)
Review: Amor fati is one of the core principles of stoicism - translated into English as "love of fate", or "love of one's fate" - it should therefore come as no surprise that Amor Fati's production work seems to dig deep into atmospheres while still riding on the immediate infectiousness of tech. Split over two tracks, the EP is a real giver, managing to do multiple things at once and not drop a single spinning plate. 'Stanton Carlisle', for example, nods to toy box techno and sharp micro house, all razor high hats, stepping snares, and bounding energy, using friendly noises to develop an arrangement that really doesn't let up. Over on 'Navarone Again', we're in more of a synth wave dystopia, waves of retro harmony and slightly ominous choral vocals intermixed with a sample about leaders of the universe.

When The Lights Go Down (6:24)
The Beginning (7:02)
Review: Drumcode don't just do huge-room heaters, you know. 'When The Lights Go Down' is a strong case for the label's darker side, seeing to a generous three-track contribution from Neapolitan producer and DJ Roberto Capuano. The artist eschews an overindulgence in detuned trance saws for reese basses here, preferring to revel in the wealths of space offered by repeated kick drums and large reverberative spaces - as opposed to high-endy, sizzly sounds. The title track is the star, thanks to its riveting vocal line and guard-throwing rhythmic messups, which occur at the same time.

Derek Carr is the gift that keeps on giving. Alongside plenty of fresh new tracks, the esteemed producer keeps on finding magic in his vault of hard drives This vast new collection of such treasure comes from the Pariter label across EIGHT sides of vinyl. These are all rare or unreleased tunes made sometime back in the late 90s and early 00s. They explore, in signature Carr fashion, deep and sleek techno with dubby chords, acid leads and plenty of spaced-out atmospheres that still sound as if they have been sent back from the future. Essential.

Review: For our money, some of the best electro in the world comes out of the Netherlands, and it has done foursome time. It's not just the famous West Coast sound out of The Hague that's worth checking in with either as labels and artists all over the flat lands seem to excel. Here we have CEM3340 in blistering form across four sides of vinyl on the Curtis Electronic label. e covers plenty of ground from cyborg funk to rugged techno-infused bangers, always with pummeling drum programming and lithe, bright synth work that almost makes your eyes water.

Camargue 2019: Part Two

Camargue 2019 (Adam Beyer & Layton Giordani remix) (7:14)
Camargue 2019 (The Advent remix) (6:15)
Review: Released simultaneously with a 12" containing the original version of the Advent and CJ Bolland's joint re-make of the latter's 1992 Belgian techno classic "Camargue", this second EP boasts a trio of undeniably tough remixes that will definitely set the pulse racing of anyone who loves the Drumcode label. The standout version comes from Adam Beyer and Layton Giordani, who pepper a hybrid house/techno groove with Bolland's original organ stabs, strings and metallic bassline. The Advent delivers a tougher but arguably deeper techno mix - it's very hypnotic - while Enrico Sangiuliano joins the dots between techno, trance and old school flavours.

Deepnaut - "World Crisis" (5:36)
Braulio Lam - "World Crisis" (5:28)
Deepchord - "World Crisis" (6:59)
Pulshar - "World Crisis" (4:26)
Review: One of the leading dub related labels to emerge in recent years, Avantroots project of taking dub as a genre to its furthest and freshest perspectives, while still showing the utmost respect for the history and the figures inside it, continues with this eye-opening contribution, 'Linval Thompson Meets Avantroots'. Featuring tracks from the likes of Deepchord, Pulshar, Deepnaut, and Braulio Lam, this latest project (as the name suggests) was led by the dub legend himself, Linval Thompson, who's list of credits and those he's influenced is pages and pages in length. 'World Crisis' is Thompson's key message, running like a refrain, re-emerging throughout the EP and finding new shapes with each artist's fresh approach. Deepchord's iteration, unsurprisingly, is the deepest of the collection, encircling and hypnotic it orbits Thompson's echoed vocals to perfection. Pulshar's take offers greater lyrical clarity, keeping the surrounding production minimal and delectably slow-paced, giving room for each element to breathe. Deepnaut's version is brighter, bubbling with the plucked samples of spaced-out electric guitar and expanding synth pads. Braulio Lam's offering, the final track on the release, is a more experimental, broken groover - chopping and shifting the vocals in a collage effect, refracting Thompson's message in order for it to be seen in a new light. A fantastic release to sink into - fully immersive and richly detailed.

Operator Select (America, What Time Is Love?)
Review: Austin based producer Disco Nihilist makes a triumphant return to Running Back, having scored one of our favourite 12"s of last year with Running (Far Away). Two tracks shorter than his debut for Gerd Janson's reliably consistent label, but no less impressive, Moving Forward will captivate many from the moment the elasticated bass line of "House Rent Boogie" launches into action. From here, the track playfully swings from its jack hammering groove into moments of wondrously detuned synth solos. Alongside this, "Beatdown Drums" lays its rhythmic palette thick and hard, practically bruising your cochlea in the process, whilst flipside opener "Film Grain" is an equally intense exercise - though one that matches rasping hi hats with emotion laden keys. The tempo is eased to allow some respite on "Operator Please" a sprawling mass of thick 303 modulations and loose, tumbling drums.

Stigma - "End Of The Data" (5:15)
Do Or Die - "Drk101" (6:12)
Lapucci - "Mystic Beat" (5:49)
Review: Like its' two predecessors, this third EP from the shadowy Cimedirapax label offers-up brand-new cuts from a multitude of little-known producers and rising stars. The compilation-style EP is led by Elias, who impresses with the hybrid electro/techno/acid brilliance of 'Dance Deceiver', whose moody motifs, sci-fi chords and twisted acid lines are enticing in the extreme. Stigma then steps up with the retro-futurist electro urgency of 'End of the Data' - all mutant sounds, body-popping beats, fizzing synth sounds and vintage EBM chords - before label regulars Do Or Die join the dots between TB-303 fired insanity and Nitzer Ebb on 'Drk101'. To round off a quietly impressive EP, Lapucci delivers the subtly new beat-influenced throb of 'Mystic Beat'.

Review: Deep In Dis Intl. returns after a hiatus, presenting a split EP featuring Swedish talents Eric OS and Lewis. Eric's releases on System Error, Eya Records and Space Trace caught the label's attention after hearing his tracks at Nostromo Festival. Lewis, head of Data Flow, brings his analogue soundscapes. 'Eden' (A1) fills the dancefloor with endless grooves and dreamy pads. 'Timebomb' (A2) takes the vibe higher with proggy melodies and solid drum patterns. 'Project Mayhem' (B1) hypnotises with its groove, while 'Acid44' seals the EP with infectious synths, snappy snares and a powerful bassline.

Review: Strap in, because there is mucking about on the 80th EP from Mord. The ever popular, ever excellent Exum is at the helm and is a fine artist to enlist given his proven track record dating back years. The Spanish producer never fails to cook up fresh sounds while drying on a classic techno template and that is the case here. 'Erosion 1' is a screw-face banger with stomping drums and twisted acid. 'Erosion 2' is all about the jostling, bulky, macho drum programming which forces you to move and 'Erosion 3' rocks back and forth on a drum loop that will turn your mind inside out. Lastly, 'Erosion 4' gets all freaky with the edgy synths that light up the mix like a laser gun.

Founding member of Depeche Mode and celebrated singer songwriter in his own right, Martin Gore's The Third Chimpanzee EP is up there with some of the best solo work he has ever put out, with a particularly unique type of dance-synth vibe that you can't escape from no matter how hard you try. Now we have the remixes, which have a lot to live up to but come with plenty of promise.

After all, the chosen producers involved are all heavyweights in their own right, and were certainly ready to step up to the mantle here. Opening with a pair of tracks made different by two of Brazil's most revered techno heads - ANNA and Wehbba - from there we get Berghain bass experimentalist Barker, the fury of Rrose, and percussive wonder of JLin, and that's before we come to the likes of Chris Liebing and Kangding Ray.

'A Radiant Sign' is his sophomore album and another one that backs up many people's claims that he is one of the most exciting emerging talents out there. The Berlin-based producer showcases his mastery of his synths and magical melodic sounds with music that takes cues from the likes of Rufus du Sol, Olafur Arnalds and Stephan Bodzin. He opts for hard drums on 'Tiderays' but more ambient designs on 'A Radiant Sign' while 'Let Me Go' is complex synth work that takes you to a higher emotional plane.

Review: Belgium's history with electro is almost as rich as that of the Motor City, so this coming together of Detroit native Kenny Hooper and the Elypsia Records label is a fine one. It marks Hooper's debut release on the label and is one EP of three-part series that shows off his serious skills. Cybotron and Model 500 influences abound, of course, with fresh cyborg funk, slick contemporary production and a mix of grooves from driving and cosmic to more physical and banging. The tight drums and freaky vocals of 'Encrypted' are a particular highlight for us.

Soul Journey
Review: Belgian label Elypsia continues its love affair with Kenny Hopper on this third volume of his Detroit Orbiter series. He is a new school Motor City talent with a sound that pays homage to the legendary Mid-Western musical hotbed. 'One Journey Outbox' is a high-speed electro workout with nutty basslines and free-form hits that cannot fail to cut the club loose. There's more physicality to the kinetic kicks of 'Elliptical Orbit' while 'Wishing Pon A Star' goes for a deeper and more introspective sound with delicate melodies. 'Soul Journey' closes out with a totally different look - deep rolling house and beautiful synth melodies over jazzy chords.

Review: Fresh from releasing the superb Pink Flamingos album on Dement3d, In Aternam Vale returns to Minimal Wave. This time round, he's not alone. Each of the tracks features the breathy, stylish vocals of Madrid-based Belarusian, Anneq. Her sleazy, whispered refrain is the headline attraction on the throbbing, industrial pop-meets-techno hustle of "Je Ai Dissous", while she also chats seductively over the undulating arpeggio lines, restless drums and dystopian atmospheres of "Tendencia (About Blank Version"). The ambient-leaning "V6" take of that cut is also hugely inspiring, while the Page R version of "Je Ai Dissous" is a dark, atmospheric and intoxicating celebration of legendary '80s "computer musical instrument", the Fairlight CMI.

Kiss (4:54)

Love (6:26)
Hate (5:51)
Review: After a break of almost three years, Joannes returns to RFR with his most forthright and full-on EP to date. For proof, check opener 'Kiss', a brain-melting techno stomper that wraps high-pitched bleeps and wayward TB-303 tweaks around a stomping groove, and the subtly Jaydee influenced peak-time hypnotism of 'Date', with its distant-sounding melodic loops, twisted bassline and non-stop beats. Over on side B, Joannes cannily combines booming sub-bass, loose-limbed house-style drums, deep pads and alien-sounding electronics on the decidedly intergalactic 'Love', before layering up waves of trance-inducing synth sounds and hypnotising riffs on the locked-in, late night excellence of 'Hate'.

Anomalous Diffusion (8:39)
Kazumi Cycle (7:48)
Contagion (5:30)
Review: So far, the best part of Jouem's career seems to have been shaped by the Mojuba imprint, a label that rarely ever puts in something below excellent, and one whose label heads curate diligently. The shady artist returns with the fifth instalment of the series, and "Anomalous Diffusion" kicks it off with a deep, meandering pulse that showcases the best of what dubby house has to offer; on the flip, "Kazumi Cycle" strips the whole amalgam down to a mystical and pensive whirlpool of fuzzy bass waves and slow drum machine beats that are wrapped in a misty fog of sonics. "Contagion" is our favourite piece, its subtle addition of semi breaks at the core give it something special, and place it a step above any other recent house turn we've heard. This is some deep gear - we can't wait for the sixth chapter!

Review: Fresh from launching their Voam imprint via an EP of clanking, mind-mangling industrial techno workouts, Blawan and Pariah don the Karenn alias once more for their first full-length outing. In keeping with their fuzzy, hardware-based approach, "Grapefruit Regret" is fiendishly forthright - a buzzing, crackling collection of club cuts built around armour plated kick drums, creepy and dystopian aural textures, chunky basslines and hypnotic, opaque lead lines. Occasionally it sounds like the product of two guys banging bits of metal against towering Brutalist buildings, at others the breathless soundtrack to illicit raves in car parks beneath crumbling Soviet-era municipal buildings. Throughout, it delivers some of the most intense and intoxicating techno jams of the year.
