Station Wagon
Review: We'll never tire of Gerard Hanson's individual take on electro, where vast swathes of pads and finely balanced melodies ensure a smooth trajectory into the outer realms of what machine funk can be. This latest EP appears on Spanish label Apnea, and it leads in with the bubbling bass and celestial vistas of 'Lake Bachman' before swerving to the lightly Italo-tinted melancholia of 'Summer Springs' - a fast but delicate trip to unknown regions. 'Myrtle' is a knottier transmission from Hanson's tangled studio circuitry, while 'Station Wagon' completes the picture with some consummate Moog-esque basslines and star-gazing chords that speak volumes without saying words.

Review: The man best known as Convextion assumes his ERP aka Event Related Potential alias for four more net level cuts that find him push his electro electronics ever more into the future. 'V/Eight' opens with a melancholic bassline under busy drum programming to get things going. 'Equiponderance' is more complex with squirming electronics, more hefty bass notes and serene background pads adding a third dimension. 'Engine Vibration' is a more gritty mix of busy analogue machinery and star-gazing chords then 'Enfield' closes with optimistic sonics and propulsive bouncy bass to end this cosmic cruise on a high.

Review: Swedish producer Ola Obergman has been at the top of his game for over 20 years now, dropping superb electro on the finest labels. Last year he dropped a fantastic full-length album on Pariter, but now steps up to Infiltrate with a direct dance floor offering. 'Norma Cluster' pairs busy drums and bass with more atmospheric leads before 'Invariant Hyperbola' has a perfectly crisp boom-bap that is run through with synth sequences that get your head amongst the stars. 'Sterile Neutrino' is more raw and ragged with another irresistible rhythm and 'Dragonfly44' closes in a thoughtful fashion.

Dawl - "Riding High"
Review: Italian imprint Clut Communications has never been particularly prolific, often going 12 months or more between releases, but the label's output is always on-point and worth checking. Their first outing of 2023 is a double-header, featuring two tracks apiece from acid/bleep/breakbeat revivalist DAWL and industrial and EBM-influenced techno star Stigma. The latter handles side A, first joining the dots between his moody productions, EBM and Brown Album-era Orbital on 'I Will Make You Understand', before wrapping creepy, post synth-pop riffs and moody chords around a hybrid electro/EBM beat on 'Linearsynthwave'. DAWL once again offers up decidedly nostalgic cuts, with the house-tempo, lightly new beat-influenced 'Intence Perception' [sic] being followed by the rave-igniting bass, breaks and synth stabs of 'Riding High'.

Review: King Sporty is something of a chameleonic artists, not that many people know. He started out int he 70s making reggae and soul 7"s, then moved into disco, boogie, hip-hop and electro 12"s during the 80s, and then when house music hit in the 90s he evolved once more. This new drop from Emotional Rescue takes a tune from that late era. 'Computer Music' is four to the floor with electro influences and a lazy break that pull you in deep. Far-sighted chords bring a serene sense of cosmic majesty while a filtered vocal adds space age vibes. A dub is included as well as the Universal Cave Discomix by the Philadelphia DJ and production crew. A retro-future EP indeed..

Review: Tresor home in on the happy musical 'accidents' of acclaimed techno duo Transparent Sound for this eponymous new triple retrospective album. Containing such neat audio-tools like the drill bit 'Slang City' and the spanner 'Windows To Your Sole', the originals heard here nail that sense of original, minimal, space-invadery, and melodic electro charm that many artists try to emulate, but few can properly muster up. Perhaps it can only really come from having made that kind of music at the time of its origination, which Transparent Sound luckily did.

Review: The amusingly named Overthink Records embark on a fresh reissue of this gem from Bryan Never, who did the lesser-cited work of disseminating electro-techno for the late-90s US dance lover. First released on Psychoactive, this five-tracker has an unmistakable retro-tinged edge, evidently emergent from the hardware used in its making; and while a straight acid theme might only be established at first, its increasing musicianship makes itself gradually known, as on the synth bells of 'Suspension', the tense boss-battle breaths of 'Churn', and the mathematic synth bloopery of 'Keyhole'.

Review: There's a veritable buzz building around this new release on Clone West Coast Series, and it's not hard to hear why. With past releases on Housewax, Eudemonia and his own Chateau Royal, Gal Perez has earned his stripes as an electro-techno master craftsman, but even by his own standards this record ramps the heat up a notch. Of course, electro-techno fusions are nothing new but Perez really makes his synths sing, wringing all kinds of squelchy nastiness and addictive rave energy out of his chosen tools. There are fluttering arps which soar skywards on 'Synthetic Man' and the dirtiest monophonic b-lines creeping around 'Double Data', and that's not the half of it. Guaranteed firebombs for the dancers that can handle it.

The title track is a playfully melodic, synth-driven freakout for the floor, while 'Common Travel' deals in plenty of cheeky bleeps and snappy drum machine jack. 'Furthur Away' leans in on acid lines aplenty and 'Sentir O Oir' swerves to a more overtly electro style to make this another essential grab for anyone who likes injecting some fun into their machine-driven techno set.

He is a versatile producer who takes no prisoners and considers no sounds off-limits. This one kicks off with the brutalist beats and casuistic synths of 'The Other World' before funky, acid-laced techno bouncer 'Preserve The Rave' takes you to the next level. 'The Man Of The Street' (feat Mike Tansella Jr) is then a deeper, more cosmic cut with thinking synths but still plenty of powerful rhythms and last of all are the dark jungle breaks of 'Hasta La Vista, Baby.' Review: Organic Analogue makes it to double figures with a sublime new split EP from HVL and Gacha Bakradze. The A-side is opened up with 'Infinitesimal', a stripped back and icy bit of minimal dub techno, then 'AgneffC01' gets more rhythmically physical with scattered beats and hits and 'Collective Genius' is tense, kinetic techno with a real sense of paranoia. 'Routes' is the first B-side joint with Gacha Bakradze bringing some direct but economical drum machine grooves under meticulous percussion and then 'Chain' layers smeared cosmic pads with twitchy details and 'Widow' ends with a heavy heart. No wonder, then, that a host of eminent DJs like Ben UFO are all over it.

Not Even Noticed has released a solid run of music over the past two years on labels like Diffuse Reality, Chat Noir and Eudemonia, and now the Frankfurt-based producer is offering up another four tracks which confirms their talents in no uncertain terms. 'Electromagnetic Field' has a sneaky, bubbling acid electro thread glued together by dreamy pads, while 'Radiance' goes all-out on the anthemic pads and crafty beats - one for fans of Bicep et al. 'Amber Signal' has a certain sweet, early 90s backroom lilt to it, and 'Abyssal Zone' pings off into tripped out acid territory, and does so in style.

It's not so often we get treated to a drop of fresh productions from someone normally releasing other people's music, so 10 years on from the last Ovatow outing, it's time to sit up and take notice of this new drop on Frustrated sub label Harbour City Sorrow. There's an echo chamber veneer hanging over this two-tracker which finds the worlds of electro and dub techno colliding with stunning results. This is the first drop of what we're told is going to be a limited edition series showcasing what he made and it comes on lovely orange vinyl. 'Fierce Machines' races out of the blocks with edgy hits and celestial chords over a dynamic electro rhyth. 'Silent Core' then dials things back to a more empty and atmospheric sound with zippy leads and rueful chord work. 'Dark Veneer' is a busy mix of tightly sequenced melodic patterns over a jittery groove and 'Life In The Pod' is a clean, crisp, shiny metallic trip.

Finally, that record is getting a repress to thwart the sharks and get grimy, gothic electro back in the hands of the real fans. Every track is a masterpiece, but one of our personal favourites is the rubbery nightmare funk of 'Blech Erkrankung', which comes on like Joy Division and Front 242 getting in a fight and falling down the stairs together.

Review: When it comes to throbbing, suspenseful and psychedelic electronic music rooted in EBM, new beat, industrial and electro, few can match the mind-altering exploits of long-serving producer (and sometime Andrew Weatherall collaborator) Timothy J Fairplay. He's in fine form on the Why Are They Here? EP, delivering a quartet of killer cuts. Opener 'Green Mist' sees him offer-up a missing link between the darker end of Belgian new beat, EBM and the original 1988 'pure trance' version of the KLF's 'What Time Is Love', while 'Why Are They Here' is a spooky chugger marked out by ghostly melodies and acid-fried electronics. New beat-meets-acid is the order of the day on the delightfully wayward 'Seabrook's Dream', while 'Aerial Phenomena' is a pitched-down slab of moody EBM darkness.

Review: Way back in 1998, New York techno scene stalwart John Selway opened his Zoids Volume 2 EP with a quirky chunk of razor-sharp, acid-fired electro called 'Millennium Sound'. On the eve of its 25th birthday, Selway has decided to get the track remixed by some serious electro talents. Keith Tenniswood kicks things off as Radioactive Man, offering a fiendishly sub0heavy, alien-sounding electro rub that's guaranteed to put extra pressure on bassbins and sub cabinets, before Selway himself re-frames the cut as a moody, foreboding chunk of sci-fi electro excellence. Over on the flip, Sync 24 delivers a more percussively intense and weighty dark electro roller, while Transparent Sound joins the dots between classic 80s electro and the cybernetic moodiness of Selway's 1998 mix.

This time round, the Aussie's original mix - a warped, tooled-up take on 'Planet Rock' with added insanity and bass so warped and heavy it may give you nightmares - comes accompanied by a quartet of fresh revisions. Exzakt BFX steps up first with a moody, clandestine-sounding version that wisely employs some different electro beats, before Salome successfully pitches up and beefs up Jensen Interceptor's original mix. The final two mixes come from some genuine legends of the scene, with the Advent's 808 cowbell-and-sub-bass-heavy take being followed by a funky, squelchy and genuinely mood-enhancing revision by DJ Godfather.

Review: Although his productions have evolved over the years, and the sound of his records can vary, you can guarantee that each new Timothy J Fairplay release will be trippy, hallucinatory and include a few subtle nods to the weirder end of 1980s electronic dance music. That's certainly the case with the former Andrew Weatherall collaborator's latest EP, Hot Night For Slum Lords. It's a mini-album of sorts, with Fairplay giddily combining elements of new beat, EBM, rogue acid house, electronic psychedelia, new wave and industrial music across a trio of original tracks. Those tracks get the remix treatment on the reverse, with Intergalactic Gary's pulsating, wall-of-sound take on 'Chase Through The Street Yard' coming accompanied by a fantastic mutant electro re-make of 'Hot Night For Slum Lord' by DJ Overdose, and Univac's IDM-ish re-wire of 'Streets of Eternity'.

Review: You will probably know by now that Detroit's Filthiest is Julian Shamou, aka 313 Bass Mechanics amongst many other names. He is a music-making machine who deals mostly with electro on a wide range of labels. It is French crew Casa Voyager who tap him up here for an immersive full-length that finds him expanding his sound to take in moments away from the heart of a peak-time dancefloor amongst plenty of his usual weaponry. There are smooth electro vocal cuts, crunchy and sleazy ghetto cuts and soulful almost jungle rollers for deeper workouts making for his most complete work yet.

Review: Umek's Zeta Reticula project continues to be at the forefront of electro machinations after more than 20 years. On the strength of this latest drop for Science Cult, who are we to complain as the Slovenian titan shells down his industrial grade machine funk workouts. From 'Note Attack's frenzied assault to the head twisting, hi-octane 'Isolate' on to noise-wielding slammer 'Chemical Signatures', this is fierce and feisty electro at its finest. Don't sleep on the remix of 'Note Attack' by Syrte vs Visions Of Glosters' - an appropriately beastly version with some gnarly sound design being flexed all over the frequency spectrum.

Review: Electro tastemaker Konerytmi is a busy man with a high rate of output on labels like Infiltrate, Eudemonia in Germany and Russia's Electro Music Coalition, which is where he appears again now with his Astrodanssi EP. As always, this is sci-fi styled sound with clean synth lines and celestial melodies. 'Kukka' opens up with a shiny and reflective hall of synths that glisten and gleam. 'Fantomi' brings rubbery acid elasticity to deep cosmic electro and 'Astrofyysikko' is another one powered by a bulbous, busy bassline and snappy snares. Three further cuts get increasingly mystic and turbulent on the flip.

Adding to his extensive releases belt, he delivers four stone cold new ones for electro-techno-breakbeat Orson. With its name maybe nodding to the generative creation of fantasy landscapes in 3D CGI software, highlights like 'Magagun' convey a weird kind of horrific calculator-nightmare (bloop freakouts aplenty) between the beats, all going to make this a stellarly exciting EP.

Review: Fresh label operation Gladio Operations are embarking on a new spate of releases. Extending the idea of splitting a slab of wax between artists to the music itself, 'Split Machine' is the latest from French-Spanish collaborators Jauzas The Shining and Cycloplex, united in their taste for rugged electro. Even so, their respective styles shine through nicely here: The former delivers three cuts of aggressive and textured basslines, while the latter offers two tracks of comparatively hypnotic rhythms. Though it's an elusive concept, both effortlessly convey the notion of the schism in the machine.

Review: Proper Grub aims to fill us up on hearty doses of techno and on the evidence of this starter platter it's going to do a fine job of it. All four of the fresh tracks are collabs between LVCA and Marlon, with 'Kaleidoscope' offering up a bumping mix of old school prog synths, neon colours and dopamine inducing stabs. 'Metro' follows a similar path, this time with more of a celebratory house feel and '27th September' takes off to the stars with scintillating snares chattering away over steel drums. 'Xtra Spice' has a rigid sense of techno funk that is irresistible, especially when paired with the playful vocal stabs and trippy melodies.

The comp contains tunes from some of the most influential and respected names in the niche 'Birmingham sound' enclave of techno, namely Surgeon, Regis, Makaton, Paul Damage, Jerome Hill, Neil Landstrumm and more. Classic HOG anthems sit side-by-side with unreleased gems, showing off the colossal sublimity of a grating yet riveting sound. The coyly named Lentil Hugger Edition is a limited and eco-friendly version of the set, featuring six vinyl records in repurposed boxes from other releases, and of course decorated with HOG stickers.

Review: Credit 00 continues to be one of the most fascinating weirdniks from Dresden's Uncanny Valley, offering up cheeky electro with heaps of personality. On a return visit to Berlin label Mechatronica, he's not holding back a jot on the wild-style ideas. Just listen to 'Ratlife In The Sunshine', which creates a hybridised footwork-Miami bass style twist up of Roy Ayers' 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' with all the soul replaced by gnarliness. If that sounds like sacrilege, fear not - your boy Rat Life has the swerve to pull it off. The electro might be slightly more focused on the B-side, but these tracks still spit with non-conformist energy which is so very welcome when many stick to a very established genre formula.

Review: You could say, ahem, that Infiltrate has infiltrated deep into our conscious with its fine run of releases as we are well and truly locked in to the output each and every time. As far as we can tell, both of these artists are new names who are making their first releases here - or they are at least appearing on Juno for the first time. But the music is so impressive we find it hard to believe this is their debut. Cyphon kicks off with the tight, twitchy electro workout that is 'Hegemony' which Gene Harvest mixes into something more full fat and celestial. Konertymi's 'Valtameri' is a rich, colourful world of freeform melodic arps and arching heavenly chords while Astraali Suunnittelu could be a Kraftwerk does modern electro tune.

Review: M Parent's penchant for texture is laid bare on this searing and arresting new EP for Zement. It opens with 'Gravel Pit' which sounds like an audio diary from a car-wrecking plant. Twisted metal, fizzing battery acid, and crushed glass all feature over a distorted baseline and broken rhythm. Those same scuzzy sounds define the rest of the EP from the acid-laced 'Ideal Future' to the coruscated funk of 'Acid Thirst' via the caustic intensity of closer Climb These Walls'. An impressively unique offering that very much has its own singularly sound palette.
