Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Review: It has been some years now since Nail came back from the wilderness after one of his early EPs was re-released by Fear of Flying. Since then he has turned out plenty of new material as well as digging deep into his vast and vital vaults to serve up the sort of lo-fi but kicking house sounds that made him and his Nottingham crew such a driving force back in the 90s. And that's what we get here on For Those That Knoe - no fewer than eight masterfully stripped-back cuts of deep house. Some are laced with dreamy melodies, some roll deep for days, some are raw and textured pumpers and some are jazzed-up bangers with charm to spare. Essential stuff.

Gotta Let It Go
Review: Lisbon-based Frenchman Brawther, who is also one-half of Dungeon Meat for more raw grooves, shows off his mastery of deep house on this fresh new EP for B2 Recordings. 'Sundials' (feat Nathan Haines) immediately soothes the soul with its lunging chords and seductive sax lines. Occasional female coos add further lushness to this most heartwarming of tunes. 'Second Nature' has a little more height and drive to it but again the drums are warm and fuzzy, the chords smeared in artful ways and the overall vibe utterly heady. Last of all is the bubbly and dubby 'Gotta Let It Go' with its bottomless depths and chords that melt off into an infinite horizon. Gorgeous stuff from this always quality artist.

'At Your Fingertips' a keen tune; super lush pads hit like psychic realisations, while the of 'Hawking Points' is just as tricky and flicky.

Word For Word
Review: Legendary minimal - and acid house before that - pioneer Baby Ford very much set the blueprint for the genre back in the late 90s, both solo and with The Ifach Collective, who featured Ian Loveday, Mark Broom and Thomas Melchior (amongst others). Now they are reminding us of the greatness of that work with the first in a series of reissues coming in 2023. These tunes were originally put out back on the legendary Klang Elektronik in 2000. First up is 'Tea Party' by Eon, M-Core, and Baby Ford, an ice-cold rolling dub. 'On The Floor' with Mark Broom gets more percussive and then comes a solo cut from Baby Ford, 'The Healing' which is as heady as can be and finally 'Word For Word' featuring Cheru Amadi layers up slithers of silvery percussion and cuddly bass into dubbed-out tech heaven.

I Need You (86 House mix)
I Need You (Acid mix)
I Need You (Soul version)
Review: Having released a swathe of killer re-edits by Rahaan, it's little surprise to find Hot Biscuit Recordings serving up his new original production, albeit on a new sub-label, Yellow Taxi Records. 'I Need You' was written by the track's featured artist, soulful vocalist Kihmy, and is presented in three contrasting forms. On the A-side, Rahaan explores the house side of his musical identity, first wrapping Kihmy's vocal, suspenseful keyboard melodies and gorgeous proto-house stabs around an addictive, effects-laden bassline and jacking drum machine beats on the '86 House Mix', before going darker and more psychedelic on the TB-303-powered 'Acid Mix'. As good as they are, the most joyous mix of all resides on side B: the 'Soul Mix', which offers a warmer, mid-tempo, disco-influenced interpretation full to bursting with luscious live instrumentation.

Review: The Global North label is run by a lad from Liverpool who cut his teeth in Leeds before making the tried and tested move to Berlin a number of years ago. He's made it stick, too, and is now emerging as a producer and label A&R with a sound as unique as his DJ sets. He works as DJ Pipe and this new EP finds him link up with Tasso across four sublime sounds. It is minimal and tech but full-blooded stuff with fleshy synths, cosmic pads and fat bass that makes dance floors bounce. The highlight here is the deep and slinky sound of 'Moonshine', a quality bit of teshno if ever we heard it.

Review: Aubrey has always brought a detailed sense of sound design to his heavy techno. The Berlin-based artist does that again here on a first EP on his own Solid Groveos since 2016. Two tracks delve into his archives to come up with some rare and obscure jams from the 90s. One is 'Lose Yourself' - a bright and cosmic take on techno that prime-era Derrick May would be proud of then the other, 'Breaking Out', offers golden US-style house with nice frayed synths and smoky depths. Two new cuts are 'Chase Mind' - a cavernous and dubby, with whimsical pads and unrelenting bass locking you in a trance, then 'Mr Muscle', a twisted acid techno closer that completes a varied and vital EP.

Review: Three nicely varied offerings from the Constant Sound label's co-owner James 'Burnski' Burnham, headed by the ridiculously catchy and unashamedly party-stoking 'Where Are You?', where hyperactive, clipped vocals add a new dimension to the sturdy, garage influenced house grooves that have become one of his trademarks. 'Stop' is cooler and calmer, jazzy vibraphone tinkling making way for nudging keyboard stabs, and delay-heavy reggae vocals and brass flavouring the irresistible shuffle of closer 'The Way''.

Guidance (XDB remix)
Review: This double 12" compilation between Brazilian duo Stekke and producer and DJ Max Underson is a perfect marriage between the emotional aesthetic background of Underson's previous works and the precise floor-filling formula that Stekke has devised. The minimal composition is at the crossroads between deep, acid and tech house, with the wet basslines of 'The Messenger' being paired with ritualistic sub-bass lines culminating in house heaven. A real highlight on this release is side 4's 'Guidance', a smooth, grooving track that goes to show that house tracks don't always have to be cramped to the brim. The negative space used in these tracks, and the way it's used, is an art. Not to turn a blind eye to the two unique remixes on the compilation either, which take tracks to new heights thanks to the abstract re-imaginings by XDB and Melchior Productions Ltd. Universal Law is a schooling in the ways of minimal house, take notes.

It's a heavy-hitting mix of pivotal house talents starting off with prolific Windy City player Boo Williams. The big man's 'Transformation' is a smooth and chord-laced house roller that has a more reflective vibe than his usual party-starting offerings. Atlanta don Kai Alce's 'Love Exists' is a heartfelt house romance then the long-time partnership of Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana douse us in star-gazing chords on 'Soul Expression' that leave you feeling refreshed. Review: Cheeky minimal house moods from an unknown artist for the minimal TELUM label, furtively laying down four cuts for Sunday-evening laydowns. Swung, low-slung bass hits and surreptitious bells make this a calmly spiritual affair, while snappy kicks, claps n' glitches ensure the label's ever-present deep tech M.O. Keener listeners will note the constantly shifting textures, ornamentations and rather schizophrenic voices muttering away in the background, hinting at a deeper subtext than mere dancefloor vibe-ism.

Review: Forest III specialise in janky and heavy ambient trance, and this latest contribution from mainstay Noiro is no exception. 'Meissa' amps up the emphasis on slinky front-and-centre basslines and roughly-placed, offbeat trance rhythms. 'Dextro' is its dextrous opening highlight, 2-and-4 hi-hats laying the groundwork for many an infectious synth organ and arpy marimba. Wackier cuts like 'Cousu' do just as good a job at beguiling.

Review: UK tech house legend Mark Ambrose is now back with a third volume of his The Journey series on Richard Davis' reissue label Repeat. The revered veteran crafted plenty of the genre's best and most unique sounds and you can revisit three of them now. 'Acid' is a slow, deep and meandering monster with rubbery bass and undulating 303 lines. 'The Ghoulash Monster From Outer Space' is a more dark and tribal, chunky and sci-fi sound with rich sound designs and eerie atmospheres and '5 AM' closes on a serene deep tech groove. Ricardo Villalobos, Sonja Moonear and Marcel Dettmann are just some of the names who have played these jams over the years, which is a testament to their quality.

Review: Curated By Time has taken a deep dive into the back catalogue of UK tech-house pioneer – and Crayon label founder – Mark Ambrose. Lifeforms Volume 1 was first released way back in 1998 and in recent years has become an in-demand item amongst crate-digging, dusty-fingered DJs. It remains one of Ambrose’s most alluring EPs. Check first ‘Untitled 1’, a deeply spacey slab of intergalactic sci-fi techno underpinned by pitched-up house beats, before admiring the deep, dubby sub bass, mind-mangling noises and hypnotic house beats of ‘Untitled 2’. B-side ‘Untitled 3’, meanwhile, is a fantastic example of early UK tech-house in its pures form: all sci-fi synth sounds, undulating bass, crunchy house drums and the dreamiest of pads.

Review: Instant Match kicked off with an instantly good first EP all the way back in April of last year. Finally, the label follows it up with a second tasteful house offering that mixes up some drums to make you move with nice deep chord work bathed in synths that speak of a warm glowing sunset. That's the case on 'Sweet Dance' anyway, with its balmy and breezy feel, then 'Try Again' brings a seductive and heavily treated female vocal that land in deadpan but steamy fashion over more neon pads and late-night house vibes. 'Pepper Sequence' ups the ante a touch and 'Hibiki Shot' rounds out with some nice cyborg house funk.

Review: Adi and Walrus' For Playful Manners label has already set out its stall as a trustworthy spot for quirky, engaging twists on the usual house and tech fare, encouraging fresh textures and those subtle shifts that mark out a memorable tune from the common or garden genre studies. For the third release they've invited Gwenan and Camiflage to contribute to the four uncredited tracks - were they collaborating, were they working solo? Who knows? Whatever the case, the quality shines through on these loose and limber joints, where a sense of joy spills out of the rubbery synthesis and the samples bounce around in tandem with the sure-footed beats. Classy as hell and loaded with personality, these are the kinds of tunes which get strangers looking each other and nodding their approval in the depths of a serious party.

Monumental Change
Review: Matt and Mark Thibideau have been quietly issuing plush, melodious strains of minimal house and techno for a long time now. While they may be more of a cult concern for those in the know, the quality of their productions remains an enduring delight that works magic on a dancefloor. Look no further than this new record for Berg Audio, which leads in with the swirling synthesis of '5 Stage Development' in a masterful display of dubby techno before the delays get ramped up even further for 'Slate Range'. Balancing the meditative pulse of their synths with a crisp line in drum programming, they delve into further realms of dubbed out 4/4 perfection with 'Serge 5.0 (rework)' and bliss out in style for closing cut 'Monumental Change'.

Review: Dubatech lives up to his name with some, well, dubby tech here on the Ranges label. 'Form & Functions' is an EP that balances those things perfectly. 'Straight Ahead' is a frosted dub techno roller with plenty of bounce. The synths are perfectly tweaked, the drums smooth and frictionless and the vibes heady but dynamic. 'Istanbul Latenight' is a more driving cut with a quicker pace but no less depth and 'Sand & Stars' is slowed down, tripped out late night dub for smokers. 'Moonlight Moods' is the more tech-leaning closer but it's another classy tune.

Review: Is there anyone in the game that has been turning out such essential club sounds in so many different styles for such a long and consistent run as Burnski? Whatever he has on his cornflakes, we want some, because he's done it again here, this time with pal Kelper. 'What I Want' takes up the whole of the a-side and is mix of everything from deep house to minimal to Chicago jack. It's a busy, restless tune with a hooky vocal that keeps you locked. 'This' is a more tripped-out 5AM groove with warped deep space sound designs and airy drums that float. 'Lucid State' taps into a dreamy 90s tech house vibe that is utterly compelling.

Review: Ohm and Octal Industries debuted on this label to great acclaim back in 2022 and now they're back on Lempuyang with Northwest Passage, a first album-length collaboration. This double 12" continues with their themes of failed arctic explorations and mythological creatures and, after 12 previous outings together, might be their best work yet: the sounds are mature and powerful, bleak yet deep. Dubbed-out chords roll to infinite horizons, frozen tundras are detailed with wispy melodies and pulsing, supple techno both soothes the soul and gets the head nodding. This is more stylish, subversive and superbly executed electronic music.

Review: Swiss pair Andre Schmid and Philippe Egger are Mountain People and are masters of deep, enchanting house sounds. Most of them come on their own label which now comes of age with a 21st such EP. Track one is a lush mix of serene synth harmonies and warm, diffuse melodic glows over deft and tightly woven minimal house drums. It's a similar story on Track Two but with a more tight, tense feel and the occasional ray of light from a warm synth smear. Last but not least, the b-side offers a more expansive and open track with a rich bassline and soulful vocal mutterings adding the human warmth.

Review: Four slices of well fashioned, steely tech house from Club Magnus, kicked off with two versions of 'Fool Love' by Dudley Strangeways & Magnus Asber. Both have a similarly irresistible but understated minimal framework to work from, the vocal mix - as its name would suggest- heaps more generous helpings of the austere male vocal, while the Jumped Up club mix makes more space for ingenious sonics to do their stuff.

Jonno & Tommo's 'Acid Cabbage' continues proceedings, with a bubbling b-line and some echoey old skool stabs and chords, before Numonika's 'Cosmic Girl' completes the set with its most acid-led composition, the wriggling 808 action nicely offset by some smooth strings and tinkling bell melodies.

Review: Anthea & Velasco's PIllz imprint is knocking it out of the park in 2023 and this time it is the UK duo of Duowe & Picasso who step up to the plate. They run their own label Fraise Records and offer up here the same sort of spaced-out and gritty peak time tunes they have become known for. Electro and techno are fused into something new from the off with the alien sounds of 'Pink Dust' demanding you dance. 'Timekeeper' gets all worked up into a metallic world of drum clatter and edgy melodies then 'Mucky Bit' layers up squelchy bass sounds and roaming pads with a cosmic feel. The final groove cruise is 'Unattracted Space', with its celestial shimmer and slick beats.

Review: Despite presumably being insanely busy A&Ring for all his many labels, which put out music at a high rate of release, Burnski does also still find time to make his own music. And it's top tackle too, whatever he tries, from garage to ambient. To kick off with here the Northern rock cooks up a super breezy and Balearic-tinged house tune that you can imagine playing at some vibey Ibiza sunset party. That's probably why he called it 'Summer 23' to be honest. On the flip, 'Afters' gets more chunky and tribal, with tight and pinging drums and that sort of wide-eyed, tongues-out energy that gets the freaks going.

NND takes us deep into the heart of a warehouse party after dark with this powerful new EP for Extrude. He hails from Italy and is part of the new school with an equal mix of retro sounds and future ideals. This is a third solo EP from the artist and it kicks off with the acid lashings of 'Prototype', a slick tech cut with neon chords and bumpy bass. 'Nightmare Voyage' is a more cosmic trip with darker energy and heads-down dancing vibes and then 'Plutone' cuts loose with wild synth lens spraying about over raw drum work. 'Terrorist' shuts down with a haunting late-night vibe.

Review: Robert Drewek and Tomie Nevada worked together a fair amount around the mid 00s, delivering a punchy kind of electro-techno hybrid which was very much of the era. They scored a partial hit with 'Done In 2 Days', which cropped up on the popular Nightdrive mix album by Slam and now the original EP that track was from is being reissued by Rawax. The music has aged well, sporting a certain spiky attitude which should land well with a fresh crowd in modern times and the rest of the EP is just as satisfying, from the rubbery acid wriggles and bumping groove of 'Follow Me' to the nervy tech of 'More CPU Please'.

There are two of them on this 12" and the first is a dusty odyssey where house and techno meet. The groove is delightfully fluid, with dubby bass and coarse hits all topped off with sustained chords that bring the soulful hook. 'Track 2' on the flip is a little less heads down and locked in - it's more airy, with a lighter synth lead and magnificently well-swung drums that are rubbery and full of air. Both cuts are stylish and stripped-back sounds that brim with infectious charm.

He has a background in punk bands but a trip to Berlin turned his ear and now he makes experimental fusions that draw on everything from industrial to Berghain to Detroit for inspiration. 'Mental Reset' is the deepest and slipperiest of the lot, with its woodblock snares and short-decaying trance lines, while 'Cafe Cheri' is our follow-up favourite, nailing a real sense of cuteness with its deep exhalation sounds and slow, Modjo-esque builds.

This is quintessential minimal through and through, as ‘Wonder’ holds down a crisp, fine slither of a beat as a vessel for scattered pings and plongs to suit the disassociated dancer’s inquisitive mind. Meanwhile Perlon co-founder Markus Nikolai brings his debonair flair to the track with a fizzy, funky version to appeal to those who like their minimal a little cheekier. Then Rhadoo finishes the record off with a smudged, tripped out inversion of the track for when you want to take things really deep.

Review: This record is named after Vedanta, an ancient philosophy based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. The music, originally composed and produced by Joseph S Joyce and later remixed by Sebastian Mullaert of Minilogue, was greatly inspired, after reading commentaries from Swami Rama Tirtha's biography "The Scientist & Mahatma" - Chapter 1 - Vedanta and The Secret of Success. Now, some nine years later, it gets served up as a remix EP. Thankfully the quality levels remain high here as he kicks off with 'Catastrophizing', a brilliantly bass-heavy cut with broken beats to make you sweat. On the flip, 'Landing' has a more inward sense of reflection with its fizzing synths and deep space atmospheres making an indelible mark. Last of all, the magic of Detroit looms large with a superb remix by Motor City mainstay Kyle Hall. His version of 'Landing' brings some jazzy melodic vibes and one of his trademark deep house and bumping grooves. This is another essential 12" from No Speakers.

Little Mermaid
Little Mermaid (Bluetrain Special edition dub)
Review: Ohm & Kvadrant are no strangers to collaboration having done so with great outcomes before now. This time out they head on another deep sub aquatic voyage into dubbed techno realms. 'Little Mermaid' is a suitable title for such a sonic journey and it is one with lush harmonies up top, glowing like beams of light piercing the water way up above. Swirling pads add scale as this one rolls on smoothly. Who better to remix that dub master Bluetrain whose special edition dub is expertly reduced to the most smooth drum loops, dubby chords and icy hi hats.
