Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Review: Feed-Forward was the first and last studio album from techno titans Sandwell District. It arrived some 13 years ago and this is the first time it has been reissued - it is also being made digitally available for the first time, too. The collective made up of Regis, Function, Female and Silent Servant have also shared a new and unheard track 'Surrender To The Unknown', which makes it onto this reissued version of the original album. It sits well with the rest of the cuts which bring together dub, industrial and techno in all new ways. The group is also back for a new series of live shows this year.

Review: We'll never tire of Gerard Hanson's individual take on electro, where vast swathes of pads and finely balanced melodies ensure a smooth trajectory into the outer realms of what machine funk can be. This latest EP appears on Spanish label Apnea, and it leads in with the bubbling bass and celestial vistas of 'Lake Bachman' before swerving to the lightly Italo-tinted melancholia of 'Summer Springs' - a fast but delicate trip to unknown regions. 'Myrtle' is a knottier transmission from Hanson's tangled studio circuitry, while 'Station Wagon' completes the picture with some consummate Moog-esque basslines and star-gazing chords that speak volumes without saying words.

Review: The man best known as Convextion assumes his ERP aka Event Related Potential alias for four more net level cuts that find him push his electro electronics ever more into the future. 'V/Eight' opens with a melancholic bassline under busy drum programming to get things going. 'Equiponderance' is more complex with squirming electronics, more hefty bass notes and serene background pads adding a third dimension. 'Engine Vibration' is a more gritty mix of busy analogue machinery and star-gazing chords then 'Enfield' closes with optimistic sonics and propulsive bouncy bass to end this cosmic cruise on a high.

Review: Of all the many projects tangled up in the late Pete Namlook's mercurial Fax +49 label, his enduring collaborations with Move D were surely some of the finest. Given they managed to commit to over 20 CDs in that time, it's no wonder many have struggled to get to grips with the sheer volume of material on offer. Luckily Away Records are manning a reissue operation which looks through these vast volumes and offers up some of the finest cuts. They last did this back in 2019 and now they're back from round two, picking the low-slung sci-fi electro funk of 'Silk Route' and the dubby ambient house mastery of 'Sleeplearnin' from 2008 and 2006 respectively as the abundant gifts to spoil our ears with.

Word For Word
Review: Legendary minimal - and acid house before that - pioneer Baby Ford very much set the blueprint for the genre back in the late 90s, both solo and with The Ifach Collective, who featured Ian Loveday, Mark Broom and Thomas Melchior (amongst others). Now they are reminding us of the greatness of that work with the first in a series of reissues coming in 2023. These tunes were originally put out back on the legendary Klang Elektronik in 2000. First up is 'Tea Party' by Eon, M-Core, and Baby Ford, an ice-cold rolling dub. 'On The Floor' with Mark Broom gets more percussive and then comes a solo cut from Baby Ford, 'The Healing' which is as heady as can be and finally 'Word For Word' featuring Cheru Amadi layers up slithers of silvery percussion and cuddly bass into dubbed-out tech heaven.

I Need You (Soul version)
Review: Having released a swathe of killer re-edits by Rahaan, it's little surprise to find Hot Biscuit Recordings serving up his new original production, albeit on a new sub-label, Yellow Taxi Records. 'I Need You' was written by the track's featured artist, soulful vocalist Kihmy, and is presented in three contrasting forms. On the A-side, Rahaan explores the house side of his musical identity, first wrapping Kihmy's vocal, suspenseful keyboard melodies and gorgeous proto-house stabs around an addictive, effects-laden bassline and jacking drum machine beats on the '86 House Mix', before going darker and more psychedelic on the TB-303-powered 'Acid Mix'. As good as they are, the most joyous mix of all resides on side B: the 'Soul Mix', which offers a warmer, mid-tempo, disco-influenced interpretation full to bursting with luscious live instrumentation.

Review: Aubrey has always brought a detailed sense of sound design to his heavy techno. The Berlin-based artist does that again here on a first EP on his own Solid Groveos since 2016. Two tracks delve into his archives to come up with some rare and obscure jams from the 90s. One is 'Lose Yourself' - a bright and cosmic take on techno that prime-era Derrick May would be proud of then the other, 'Breaking Out', offers golden US-style house with nice frayed synths and smoky depths. Two new cuts are 'Chase Mind' - a cavernous and dubby, with whimsical pads and unrelenting bass locking you in a trance, then 'Mr Muscle', a twisted acid techno closer that completes a varied and vital EP.

Last year he dropped a fantastic full-length album on Pariter, but now steps up to Infiltrate with a direct dance floor offering. 'Norma Cluster' pairs busy drums and bass with more atmospheric leads before 'Invariant Hyperbola' has a perfectly crisp boom-bap that is run through with synth sequences that get your head amongst the stars. 'Sterile Neutrino' is more raw and ragged with another irresistible rhythm and 'Dragonfly44' closes in a thoughtful fashion.

Review: Well, well, well, we didn't expect this one: Radio Slave in piano house mode. The man who has made a career off dark, rolling, wall-rattling and proudly linear techno releases on his mighty Rekids label shows a totally different but equally essential side here. 'Strobe Queen' is a slow burning, slow-release pleasure built on low-slung mid-tempo drums and overlaid with glorious piano chords that speak of joy and happiness. Eric Kupper removes a little of the polish, ups the dust and adds his own vocal mutterings over the top for something more zoned out.

They come from Cousin who kicks off with the lurching, bass infused rhythms of '88'. 'Ante' then pairs edgy synth work and aqueous droplets with busted synth loops to make for something truly fresh. 'Otta' is a lush suspensory tune that floats you on ambient pads with minimal elastic rhythms. 'Fifth Wall' sits down with more misty ambient and mysterious atmospheres that float through space.

Review: Italian imprint Clut Communications has never been particularly prolific, often going 12 months or more between releases, but the label's output is always on-point and worth checking. Their first outing of 2023 is a double-header, featuring two tracks apiece from acid/bleep/breakbeat revivalist DAWL and industrial and EBM-influenced techno star Stigma. The latter handles side A, first joining the dots between his moody productions, EBM and Brown Album-era Orbital on 'I Will Make You Understand', before wrapping creepy, post synth-pop riffs and moody chords around a hybrid electro/EBM beat on 'Linearsynthwave'. DAWL once again offers up decidedly nostalgic cuts, with the house-tempo, lightly new beat-influenced 'Intence Perception' [sic] being followed by the rave-igniting bass, breaks and synth stabs of 'Riding High'.

Review: Hands up, we admit it, you'll find no well-considered objective review of this one because it happens to be one of our favourite ever tracks. Model 500 aka Detroit's legendary Juan Atkins pretty much perfected deep techno with this one which is originally from back in 1995. The version of 'Starlight' on the A-side has fizzing synth layers, cavernous depths filled with echoing chords and a shuffling, shapeshifting bassline to die for, Berlin dub innovators Mortiz clean it up a little on the flip and drop in more pronounced kicks. Either side is an immediate escape into still-futuristic cosmic bliss.

Review: Curated By Time has taken a deep dive into the back catalogue of UK tech-house pioneer – and Crayon label founder – Mark Ambrose. Lifeforms Volume 1 was first released way back in 1998 and in recent years has become an in-demand item amongst crate-digging, dusty-fingered DJs. It remains one of Ambrose’s most alluring EPs. Check first ‘Untitled 1’, a deeply spacey slab of intergalactic sci-fi techno underpinned by pitched-up house beats, before admiring the deep, dubby sub bass, mind-mangling noises and hypnotic house beats of ‘Untitled 2’. B-side ‘Untitled 3’, meanwhile, is a fantastic example of early UK tech-house in its pures form: all sci-fi synth sounds, undulating bass, crunchy house drums and the dreamiest of pads.

Lone Swordsman (Chris Carter remix)
Review: Daniel Avery’s heartfelt tribute to the late, great Andrew Weatherall, the melancholic masterpiece that is ‘Lone Swordsmen’, was one of the standout tracks on his most recent album, the critically acclaimed Ultra Truth. Here the track returns in remixed form, with Throbbing Gristle’s Chris Carter putting his spin on Avery’s bittersweet, late-90s style IDM gem. Carter’s version is a touch warmer and more percussively up-beat, with Avery’s lilting lead lines, poignant melodies and glistening electronic motifs rising above a slipped breakbeat and moody bass. It’s an excellent remix all told, and a fine example of how to rework on already excellent track to enhance its key features.

Review: Second-guessing Eversines (real name Remco Hazewinkel) has always been tricky, with the Dutch producer’s releases frequently blurring the boundaries between club-focused techno, electro, IDM, ambient and more experimental flavours. For his Slow Life debut, the Amsterdam-based artist has decided to focus on peak-time floors, opening proceedings with the hybrid Detroit techno/acid/piano-house shimmer of ‘First Rays’ – a gorgeous, sunrise-read slab of emotive dancefloor brilliance. The rest of the EP is similarly positive, with highlights including the subtle LFO influences, psychedelic TB-303 motifs and bustling techno-electro beats of ‘Simple Honesty’, and the alien-sounding, sub-heavy, bleep-influenced techno shuffle of ‘Youth’. An impressively strong EP all told.

Now here comes P0lyrhythm with a minimal amount of background information and some highly refined machine soul referencing the origins of techno in its title. It's either an extremely authentic-sounding tribute or a sneaky gift from a pioneer, who knows for sure, and more to the point who cares? It's magical techno with pure uplift in its bones, offering the kind of restorative approach which is so desperately needed when so much club music tilts towards annihilation. Highly recommended for all lovers of the original techno sound.

Review: Move D and the late Pete Namlook recorded a lot of material during the heady years of Fax +49 Records, with some 24 CDs issued up to 2010 and additional singles besides. It's a lot of material to make sense of, but thankfully Away Records have taken up the mantle of providing a filter by means of this series of reissues, which started in 2019 and now returns for a second round. Picking just two tracks this time around, they've chosen two surprisingly energetic tracks from a partnership more commonly imagined traversing vast spaces of ambient electronica. 'Silk Route', pulled from the 2008 album Travelling The Silk Route, is a punchy affair with shifting sands of synths and samples atop a punchy electro-techno rhythm section. On the flip, 'Sleeplearnin' is a masterclass of deep and dubby house music with an abundance of ambient techno flourishes on top - a combination which works beautifully. Collectors rejoice at this red vinyl edition, no less!

Review: David 'Move D' Moufang may have released music on many different labels over the years, but remarkably this contribution to the label's RX series marks his belated debut on Rawax. As you'd expect given the Heidelberg-based veteran's stellar career and exceptional track record, there's much to set the pulse racing throughout. He starts in sparkling, life-affirming mode via the deliciously dreamy synths, bustling drum machine percussion, acid bass and spacey synth sounds of 'Circle To The Square', before exploring darker, moodier, wilder and more twisted, techno-influenced tackle on 'Sweet Heini'. Boulliabass lends a hand on the ultra-deep, ambient techno-tinged house hypnotism of 'Drone', while 'Ripples (2023 Version)' wraps undulating melodies and hazy chords around a head-nodding, locked-in deep house groove.

With past releases on Housewax, Eudemonia and his own Chateau Royal, Gal Perez has earned his stripes as an electro-techno master craftsman, but even by his own standards this record ramps the heat up a notch. Of course, electro-techno fusions are nothing new but Perez really makes his synths sing, wringing all kinds of squelchy nastiness and addictive rave energy out of his chosen tools. There are fluttering arps which soar skywards on 'Synthetic Man' and the dirtiest monophonic b-lines creeping around 'Double Data', and that's not the half of it. Guaranteed firebombs for the dancers that can handle it.

Review: The latest entry in Cabaret's steadfast run of club workouts comes from Ottber and Katsuya Sano, who team up on the electro-techno charged Good Friends 12". The title track is a playfully melodic, synth-driven freakout for the floor, while 'Common Travel' deals in plenty of cheeky bleeps and snappy drum machine jack. 'Furthur Away' leans in on acid lines aplenty and 'Sentir O Oir' swerves to a more overtly electro style to make this another essential grab for anyone who likes injecting some fun into their machine-driven techno set.

Review: Organic Analogue makes it to double figures with a sublime new split EP from HVL and Gacha Bakradze. The A-side is opened up with 'Infinitesimal', a stripped back and icy bit of minimal dub techno, then 'AgneffC01' gets more rhythmically physical with scattered beats and hits and 'Collective Genius' is tense, kinetic techno with a real sense of paranoia. 'Routes' is the first B-side joint with Gacha Bakradze bringing some direct but economical drum machine grooves under meticulous percussion and then 'Chain' layers smeared cosmic pads with twitchy details and 'Widow' ends with a heavy heart. No wonder, then, that a host of eminent DJs like Ben UFO are all over it.

Review: Dubatech lives up to his name with some, well, dubby tech here on the Ranges label. 'Form & Functions' is an EP that balances those things perfectly. 'Straight Ahead' is a frosted dub techno roller with plenty of bounce. The synths are perfectly tweaked, the drums smooth and frictionless and the vibes heady but dynamic. 'Istanbul Latenight' is a more driving cut with a quicker pace but no less depth and 'Sand & Stars' is slowed down, tripped out late night dub for smokers. 'Moonlight Moods' is the more tech-leaning closer but it's another classy tune.

Review: James Pennington remains one of the cult veterans of Detroit's techno legacy, right there at the beginning and wholly revered by those across his work. Even if he still exists a little on the fringes compared to some of his peers, releases like this remind you how respected he is, and for good reason. 'Winds Of Fear' just hits that balance between the true, deep-rooted, classic kind of techno and the otherness which makes the best of the genre memorable instead of forgettable. The trombone-like synth line forming the melodic bedrock of the track is just not something you hear often in techno, but it sounds powerful especially on top of the rough, urgent slap of the Suburban Knight drums. As if the original wasn't enough, we get Robert Hood going in on the track with a tight but funky as hell edit and a dusty beatdown version from Eddie Fowlkes. Legends, assemble!

Review: Detroit-based Code Industry, for those who know, were a highly regarded and influential EBM-techno outfit. The always reliable Dark Entries has been digging in their vaults to serve up this vital reissue of their Structure EP. The quartet of Rob Myers, E.N. Sevy, Kyl Crys, and William Keith formed in 1989 having previously worked as Code Assault and were rare black artists working in the world of EBM and industrial. They were socially and politically minded so issues of racism, the media, and the hypocrisy of patriotism all comes up in their music which is denied by taught synths and dark vocal whispers that echo the work of acts like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb. Add in high tech grooves and you have s fantastic EP that was originally released in 1991 on the Antler-Subway label.

Review: Three and a half years have passed since Jasen Loveland and Patrick Russell debuted their Pervocet project on Interdimensional Transmissions' ongoing Acid Series. This belated follow-up promises more "psychedelic music used to induce moderate to severe psychosis" (as their brief bio puts it). They set their stall out with 'Neighbor', a sparse and punchy acid-electro workout where raw, razor-sharp TB-303 motifs and vocoder vocal snippets catch the ear, before opting for a more relaxed - but no less psychedelic - acid-electro flex on the faintly foreboding 'Rawlo'. Loveland and Russell flip the script on 'L0V3 S1R3N', peppering a bouncy acid house-goes-techno beat with sweat-soaked percussion filled and hard-wired acid lines, while 'Phasy Suzan' is a deep, effects-laden, mind-mangling slab of expertly hallucinatory, mid-tempo excellence.

Review: Ohm and Octal Industries debuted on this label to great acclaim back in 2022 and now they're back on Lempuyang with Northwest Passage, a first album-length collaboration. This double 12" continues with their themes of failed arctic explorations and mythological creatures and, after 12 previous outings together, might be their best work yet: the sounds are mature and powerful, bleak yet deep. Dubbed-out chords roll to infinite horizons, frozen tundras are detailed with wispy melodies and pulsing, supple techno both soothes the soul and gets the head nodding. This is more stylish, subversive and superbly executed electronic music.

Review: Multidisciplinary artist Seth Horvitz aka Rrose returns to their own EAUX label here with a new album, Please Touch, which comes after their Lotus Eater collaboration with Lucy and a number of influential EPs on the likes of Sandwell District and Stroboscopic Artefacts over the years. These potent, stripped back and synth-laden techno cuts explore new vistas while building on what has come before. Rose has studied with West Coast avant-garde trailblazers at Mills College and feeds their sounds through "elaborate webs of interrelated audio processing" which means a change in every element of the music has a knock-on effect on all the others. It means this is music in constant mutation.

It's not so often we get treated to a drop of fresh productions from someone normally releasing other people's music, so 10 years on from the last Ovatow outing, it's time to sit up and take notice of this new drop on Frustrated sub label Harbour City Sorrow. There's an echo chamber veneer hanging over this two-tracker which finds the worlds of electro and dub techno colliding with stunning results. If you value deep-diving electronics with expansive atmospheres, this record is for you.

Review: Over the past couple of years the Ohm Series of 12"s has quietly become one of the best in the field of dub techno, always carrying a respectable range of artists pushing the sound forwards, and now carrying the kind of weight which tells you you're getting the best these artists have to offer. On the seventh entry we can hear Ohm himself, aka Bjarnar Jonsson and Octal Industries teaming up for the deeply submerged creeper 'System (vs Federson)', while Lee Holman brings something brighter, more Motor City-inspired to the table on 'Absorbed By The Elements'. Andrea Cichecki slinks into a mellow, swung house mood on 'Universe Blue' and El Choop leans in on the sound design around his chord sounds to create the rhythmic heat in his outstanding 'FORPOD'. As ever, the bar remains high with the Ohm Series offerings.

This is the first drop of what we're told is going to be a limited edition series showcasing what he made and it comes on lovely orange vinyl. 'Fierce Machines' races out of the blocks with edgy hits and celestial chords over a dynamic electro rhyth. 'Silent Core' then dials things back to a more empty and atmospheric sound with zippy leads and rueful chord work. 'Dark Veneer' is a busy mix of tightly sequenced melodic patterns over a jittery groove and 'Life In The Pod' is a clean, crisp, shiny metallic trip.

If you value the sound being explored on labels like Blank Mind, Cong Burn and Accidental Meetings, you're sure to find something to enjoy here. The percussion is intricate and organic in nature, but absolutely tipped towards danceability in the deep, trippy techno frame of mind. Review: Despite being amongst Chicago's first wave of house activists (he started DJing in 1981) and a near 30-year production career that includes releases on such imprints as Relief Records, Rush Hour, Djax-Up Beats and Strictly Jaz Unit, Boo Williams has never received the plaudits his impeccable track record deserves. Each new release from the long serving Chicagoan is worth a listen, and this EP on his own imprint is no exception. Blurring the boundaries between Afro-house, deep house and the tech-tinged hybrid sounds of Osunlade, Backwards Jive is a fine four-tracker all told. Our picks of a very strong bunch are sun-soaked and percussion-rich opener 'Track One' (with its autotune-heavy lead vocal), the locked in Afro-tech hypnotism of 'Space Mix', and the densely layered beats and sci-fi synth chords of 'Track 4'.

Toke - "Random Action"
Nico Lampariello - "Intuicion"
23B (Miles & Josh Law) - "Lost Frequency"
Zuul (Burge) - "Iloveyou"
Review: With releases like Psychedelic Renaissance in their portfolio, you can be sure the Real Interactions label crew are committed to taking your brain for one hell of a ride with their records. The fourth release on the Leeds-based label is a split affair which kicks off with the intriguing pst-trance meets UK bass flex of Toke's 'Random Action'. Nico Lampariello taps into an electro framework while keeping some of those freaky synths on hand for the trance-y vibe hanging over the label. Miles & Josh Law make up 23B, a partnership resulting in moody, dramatic tackle for maximum mind control, while Zuul (Burge) completes the set with the playfully creepy acid cut 'Iloveyou'.

Lazer Worshippers Theme
On A Rise
Free Flight
Review: Fresh, cruddy electro dreamatics from mysterious production outfit Lazer Worshippers here, joining the Atmosphere label to stake their claim to their very own 'theme'. A name like Lazer Worshippers gives off vibes of a apparent machine cult with a penchant for building sonic monuments to our AI-mech overlords. The music is similarly vaunting and numinous, with its synthetic choirs and trilling arps dancing between the left and rights like heavenly visions of a mechanized future. B-siders 'On A Rise' and 'Free Flight' are just as teary-eyed, yet bleepy, recalling the entrancing, oldskool breaksy trance work of Spooky or Digital Justice.
