What's fun to play with

MIDI Control Center

Use the Midi Control Center to customize your MiniLAB. You can change the Velocity curves (keyboard and pads), the Knobs acceleration, the Pedal input type and polarity, the Message types with their Min and Max values, the MIDI Channels, and much more. Shape the MiniLAB exactly the way you need it to be.

Switch MIDI Channel - Shift + a key with a number above it will change the MIDI Channel.

Hold a note - When engaged, every note played will be held. Playing new notes will replace the previously held notes.

Chord mode- Shift + Hold will activate "Chord mode". Then, just play one note and it will play the full chord with the pressed note as the root note. You can record a custom chord by keeping Shift + Hold pressed while entering up to 16 notes.

Transposition - Transpose the whole keyboard by octaves or semitones by pressing Oct or Shift + Oct.

Transport Control - While pressing Shift, you can use the corresponding pads to Play, Stop, Record, Loop, and tap the tempo.

Arpeggiator mode - Shift + Pad#1 engages/disengages the Arp. Long press Shift + Pad#1 to enter the Arp settings. Then use the 8 knobs or the main encoder to set the Arp as you please.

Hold + Chord + Arp - Can be activated at the same time, allowing you to keep the Arp running while tweaking the parameters of a preset.

Pad banks - Shift + Pad#2 toggles between Bank A and B).

Programs - Shift + Pad#3 cycle through the programs. Arturia and DAW programs will automatically connect to any Arturia Software or DAW if there is one open on the computer. You can create and add some User Programs to customize the MIDI CCs, notes, pad colours etc.

Arturia Program - use the main encoder to browse through presets. Press the Main encoder to select a Preset. Long Press the main encoder to like/unlike the Preset. Shift + Main encoder will browse through Types. Select one, and then browse through the filtered presets.

DAW Program - use the main encoder (turn or click), and "Shift + the main encoder" (Shift + Turn and Shift + Click) to access different features depending on the connected DAW.

Notes: Finally, a controller that unlocks the expressive potential of electronic sound generation!

The promise of electronic sound generation was to produce any instrument sound you can imagine. However, if you've ever tried to play a convincing guitar, sax, violin, clarinet or cello solo on a MIDI keyboard, you've found it to sound static and lifeless because keyboards can't do much more than turn sounds on and off at different volumes. LinnStrument takes a new approach, capturing each finger's subtle movements in three dimensions for simultaneous fine control of note expression, pitch and timbre. With this level of expressive control, the promise of electronic sound generation is finally a reality.

In short, LinnStrument is an expressive alternative to the MIDI keyboard controller. It does not generate any sounds but rather sends standard MIDI messages over its MIDI or USB jacks to any MIDI sound generator or software. But that's where the similarity ends. Unlike a MIDI keyboard's simple on/off switches, LinnStrument's patent-pending multi-touch technology captures three dimensions of each finger's movement, polyphonically, for a far greater degree of musical expression than can be achieved on a MIDI keyboard. In addition to providing standard strike velocity, typically finger pressure (Z axis) is used to vary note loudness, finger left-right (X axis) movement is used to vary pitch, and finger forward-backward (Y axis) movement is used to vary timbre.

Also unlike a MIDI keyboard, LinnStrument's notes are arranged not as on a piano, but rather like any stringed instrument, with multiple rows (strings) consisting of 2 octaves of semitones each. The rows can be tuned as a guitar, in fifths as a violin or cello, in fourths (as shown in the picture at left), or any interval you like. To make it easy to find the right notes, the naturals (C, D, E, F, G, A and B) are lit, with all the C notes lit in a different color, though you can alternatively light any scale or accent notes you choose, and in any of six colors: red, green, blue, cyan, magenta or yellow.

With LinnStrument's 3-dimensional control, you'll find little use for envelope generators or LFOs because your finger movements do a better job of controlling a note's envelope, vibrato, pitch slides, tremolo, bends, timbral changes and other musical gestures, just like on acoustic instruments. All this adds up to an electronic instrument with expressive control approaching that of fine acoustic instruments, allowing you to develop subtle musical gestures and a personal playing style, just as great musicians have done in past on acoustic instruments.

If you believe your MIDI keyboard's on/off switches are a good human interface for performing music, try playing an authentic sax, violin, cello, clarinet, guitar, pedal steel or harmonica solo on it. The problem is that on/off switches aren't very good at doing much more than turning something on or off. Think about it. Current MIDI keyboards and controllers consist of little more than switches, knobs and sliders, elements designed for computer data entry, not music. Musicians today face a tough choice: embrace the technical advantages but poor expression of MIDI keyboards and controllers, or choose the excellent expression of an acoustic instrument but poor connectivity to the computer. We offer a third choice.

The problem with a piano's note layout is that the notes aren't uniformly spaced or positioned, so sliding from one note to another requires a variety of cumbersome slide distances and directions depending on which notes you're sliding between. Had we used a piano note layout, performing a whole note bend (a common occurrence on guitar) would require one of four different movements depending on where you're bending to and from. And sliding up an octave from C to C would result in a series of uneven pitch jumps. And because some bends require a diagonal movement, changing the Y-axis position would also change the note's timbre.
Fortunately stringed instruments don't have these limitations because the notes on each string are uniformly spaced. Bending pitch from one note to another is a constant distance and direction regardless of where you're bending to or from. So we chose to arrange the notes as on any stringed instrument: multiple rows of evenly-spaced semitones, which happens to be a grid. There's no need for Bend or Mod wheels. If you want to bend a note from C to D, simply slide your finger from C to D then wiggle it for vibrato.

By the way, there's another advantage to the string/grid note arrangement: if you want to transpose a chord or scale to a different key, simply slide your hand left or right. Compare this to a piano keyboard, which requires that you learn a different chord or scale fingering for each of 12 musical keys.

Unlike the simple on/off switches of a standard MIDI keyboard, LinnStrument's RGB-backlit note pads sense each finger's subtle movements in five ways, enabling musical performance expression rivalling that of fine acoustic instruments.

How are the notes arranged? Why not a piano note arrangement?
- The piano's note arrangement is great for turning a sound on and off, but its uneven pitch intervals and rear-positioned black keys make it ill-suited for performing natural pitch bends and slides, an important expressive element of expressive performance. And the piano keyboard isn't isomorphic-- for each chord or scale, you must learn 12 different fingerings, one for each of the 12 musical keys.
- Stringed instruments don't have any of these problems because the physics of a string requires the semitones to be uniformly spaced and positioned. So LinnStrument's notes are arranged as on any stringed instrument. Each row is a series of consecutive semitones, and you can tune the rows like a guitar, violin or however you wish. By default they are tuned in musical fourths (five semitones), like a bass guitar with 8 strings. This note arrangement is called the 4ths String Layout and is fast becoming a new standard for expressive musical control, used in Ableton Push, Roli Blocks, a variety of iPad apps and more.
- To make it easy to find the right notes, the naturals (C, D, E, F, G, A and B) are lit, with all the C note pads lit in a different colour and having a Braille-size bump for tactile feedback. Alternatively, you can light any scale and in any of 10 colours.

Works with every MIDI synth, and even better with new MPE synths:
- LinnStrument sends standard MIDI messages over its USB or MIDI output jacks, and is configured by default to work out-of-the-box with every MIDI sound generator in existence, with the advantages over a MIDI keyboard of performed vibrato, note-to-note pitch slides, full pressure sensing from lightest to heaviest touch, and forward/backward movement sensing.
- For fully independent 3D control of all simultaneously touches, you'll need a synth that's compatible with MPE (Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression), a new industry-wide MIDI standard that uses a separate MIDI channel for each touch. - Expressive Swing Arpeggiator; LinnStrument's built-in Arpeggiator responds to all dimensions of movement for entirely new ways of beat-synced play. The Replay All mode creates chordal rhythms merely by varying chord pressure, and makes LinnStrument the world's only MPE beatbox.
- Split Keyboard/Strum/CC Faders; You can split the keyboard to play two different sounds, and adjust the split point as you like. You can use one split to strum notes fingered on the other split as like a guitar. Or use either split as eight horizontal Control Change Faders to adjust 8 sound parameters in real time as you play.
- Low Row; The lowest row of note pads can be reassigned to act as a Sustain Pedal, a Modulation or Bend strip, to momentarily enable the Arpeggiator (sliding your thumb to vary its rate), to restrike a fingered chord, or even as a 3D control strip, modulating three parameters at once.
- Play on a table or standing; You can play it on a table like a keyboard, but at only 5 pounds (large model) and 1" thin, you can also use the included guitar strap pins to play it standing up like a guitar.
- Single or Dual Foot Switch Input; Connect a standard single or dual foot switch for foot control of sustain, Arpeggiator, octaves, Tap Tempo, Control Change messages and more.
- All Settings on front panel/Open Source software; All of LinnStrument's settings are available on the front panel so there's no need to fumble with computer editing software. And even with all of LinnStrument's versatility, we didn't want to limit how people would use it. So we released the software as open source, allowing you to customize everything.

Notes: Perfect for use with Ableton Live and Traktor, the Killamix-Mini is a compact USB controller housed in a sturdy brushed aluminium case with solid aluminium knobs. By pressing a single knob you can select any MIDI transmit channel from 1 to 9, or, with a combination of two knobs, select the remaining channels 10 to 16. When you select a new MIDI channel, the current values of the knobs for that channel are stored so that they can be restored when you next select this channel, thus avoiding any parameter jump difficulties typical of units with traditional knobs and faders.

When the values are restored, the LED rings around the knobs indicate their new positions.

Basic Usage instructions:

Front:

Voltage Select switches: Independent for each channel. Does NOT affect MIDI/I2C data.

Slider LED colour: To change the LED color, simply remove the cap and rotate the square LED 180s. Do NOT force the LED back in, it should slide in easily, may require wiggling.

Side:

USB: Mini USB connection for power and/or connection to computer. For use, simply connect to a 5V USB wall wart, 150 mA min (not included). The device is a class compliant MIDI device and requires no drivers.

I2C: 2 buffered I2C ports. Can be used as a small I2C hub

Dissassembly: Simply remove the 4 screws from the side without the connections, remove the side plate, and slide out the bottom of the device

PCB Rear:

Power backpack: This is the power supply for the device. When converting to the eurorack configuration, simply remove. There is a standard 10pin power header below.

Module Config DIP switch: This allows you to switch between I2C Follower and I2C Leader modes easily. Simply move the switch to the "lead" position and restart the module (you can press the blue reset button once). The other 3 positions are for future expansion and not currently implemented.

Light sensitive MIDI controller - IO-Lights is a MIDI controller that controls MIDI CC or MIDI Note messages via environmental light. A high-resolution light sensor in the center of the product makes it possible. In addition, MIDI notes can also be sent to IO-Lights, which are then represented as light by the 12 LEDs on the device.

How to use IO-Lights?

IO-Lights is used as a common MIDI controller. Just connect it via USB to the music software of your choice and start controlling sounds with light. You want to connect IO-Lights to your hardware synthesizer? Then simply use an additional USB MIDI host (e.g. this). Configuration and firmware updates can be done directly in a web app.

Light to MIDI:

In the center of IO-Lights is a high-resolution light sensor that measures brightness. Use your surrounding light or a light source of your choice and point it at IO-Lights to control your sound.

MIDI to Light:

IO-Lights can not only control MIDI signals, but also visualize MIDI notes by the 12 LEDs on the product UI. Therefore simply send MIDI notes to IO-Lights. This is where the magic happens: the resulting light also influences the MIDI signals that IO-Lights emit. This creates a generative sound-light interaction.

Random Light Mode:

Let IO-Lights generate light randomly. Not only does it look nice, it also influences your sound by the resulting change of luminosity. If you want more control, you can change the internal note scale and enable external clock synchronization.

Feedback Loop Mode:

We all know feedback loops are wild, and interesting! IO-Lights has a dedicated feedback loop mode based on a simple formula: The higher the brightness measured with the light sensor, the less LEDs are on, and vice versa. This results in an oscillating light source, which can be influenced by reflecting material (for example your hand) or an external light source. Based on this random source, MIDI data is generated to play notes or automate your instruments.

Note Scale:

If you want more harmony, a custom note scale quantizing incoming light can be set in the web app. Combined with tempo synchronization, IO-Lights evolves into an organic, visual instrument with many surprises, and still does what you want.

Clock Sync:

IO-Lights allows time synchronization to external software or hardware via MIDI clock. If tempo sync is enabled, the current measured light values are sent synchronously to the MIDI host clock. Additionally a custom clock divider can be set.

Web App:

To customize IO-Lights to your needs, Instruments Of Things provide a web app hosted on their official website. Internal parameters, such as note scale or incoming brightness range can be changed in real-time and persisted via WebMIDI. New firmware updates are automatically discovered and can be directly installed in (Google Chrome/Chromium) browser via WebUSB.

Connectivity/Compatibility:

IO-Lights is a USB-MIDI class compliant device and comes with an additional USB-C to Micro USB adapter cable. The main idea behind NMSVE was to create a portable MIDI controller made for the modern musician. A device that's compact, functional, and can be used for all kinds of MIDI purposes WITHOUT taking up valuable desk space.

How does it work?

NMSVE works by wirelessly connecting to MIDI capable software on your mobile device, iPad, or Mac/PC via Bluetooth.

Once connected, each of NMSVEs 12 buttons send unique MIDI notes while the slider cycles between 7 banks for these buttons - giving you a total of 84 unique MIDI notes across the board. Meanwhile, the knob can be mapped in software to control effects!

The Xjam is a small, full-fledged plug-and-play MIDI controller. Due to its solid aluminum chassis, the Xjam is wonderfully portable and ideal for use outside of the studio on mobile devices.

With a 4x4 pad matrix, the 6 endless encoders and the smooth 16 pads, it provides a pleasant and expressive playing experience. In addition, the Xjam offers 48 configurations instead of the usual 16 scenes to save.

Its smooth and ultra-sensitive pads with polyphonic aftertouch are as versatile as the Xjam is in general. The 16 RGB pads also send MIDI CC, MIDI Program Change or MMC messages. There are also 6 high-quality endless encoders on board, which can be used in a variety of ways. In addition to controlling MIDI CC messages, the encoders can be assigned to send pitch, MIDI program change messages or even aftertouch messages. The Xjam comes with a powerful editor software for perfect adaption to your needs. There is also a TRS-MIDI Out socket to send signals to external sound generators.
